From 1840 to 1960, every United States president elected or reelected in a year ending in zero has died in office. Of those seven presidents, four were assassinated. Breaking Tecumseh’s Curse relates the real-life adventures of the U.S. Secret Service agent who tried to change tomorrow. Through enhanced protective methods and procedures, Secret Service Agent Bob Ritter hoped to prevent a similar fate for the president elected in 1980, Ronald Reagan. Some never before published information regarding the Reagan assassination attempt is revealed. There’s also an exciting look at assassination and the Secret Service including a provocative profile of accused JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Told from a spouse’s perspective, Breaking Tecumseh’s Curse is the heartfelt love story of a young couple’s journey through some extraordinary times. It highlights a dangerous period for the Secret Service--from 1972-1982. During that time, five assassination attempts took place against persons protected by the USSS, more than any other era. Four of the five attempts were directed against presidents, the other towards a presidential candidate. Two of the attempts were partially successful in that protectees were wounded. During much of this dangerous epoch, Bob was directly involved in the protective mission of the Secret Service. The work features the historic events of the time and an exciting insider's look at the Secret Service. The little-known field of protective intelligence is spotlighted. With hope for preventing future tragedies, some successful strategies for predicting dangerousness in individuals are also explored. Bob's mantra of "desperate people are dangerous people" and assessment techniques developed by him jump off the page at a time when violence, terrorism, and mass murders are all too often in the news. In 1932, Josef Meier, a native of Luenen, Germany, brought a small company of actors to the United States to tour with a passion play. It was performed in German, destined for a limited engagement in German theaters, churches, and German-speaking communities. Political and economic conditions in Germany were already deteriorating during this time, and Meier determined to remain in America, to found a permanent home for the play. He translated the play into English, hiring American actors to replace the German-speaking cast. As he booked tours across the United States, Meier continued to seek a suitable permanent outdoor location for his production, mentioning his quest to the public in interviews across the nation. En route to the West Coast, Meier presented the Passion Play in Sioux Falls, the only town of size within South Dakota at that time. A group of businessmen from the Black Hills attended and asked Meier to examine possible sites in their area. He chose a spectacular natural location in Spearfish, and in 1939, an amphitheater was constructed and became the home of the renamed Black Hills Passion Play of America.
