Amazon.com Books: Oregon guide
A complete and updated guide to traveling and hiking in Eastern Oregon, this book includes everything you'll need to plan a trip to the Wallowa Mountains, Steens Mountain, the high desert country near Bend, the Ochocos, or Hells Canyon. Travel guide information includes where to stay and what to see, including museums and bed & breakfasts, with up-to-date prices. Trail information covers virtually every route in the area, with special symbols identifying the best paths for hikers, equestrians, mountain bikers, and backpackers. GPS readings are given where useful. Sixteen pages of color photos include a guide to the wildflowers of Eastern Oregon. An appendix of 100 More Hikes in Eastern Oregon covers remote paths where you can get away from it all.Author: William L. Sullivan Company: Navillus Pr (2008-02-08) ISBN: 0967783097 List Price: $18.95 Amazon Price: $11.77 Used Price: $9.29 Howard Blum Reviews Fodor's Pacific Northwest Howard Blum is the author of the New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner American Lightning, as well as such bestsellers as Gangland. He is currently a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. While at the New York Times, he was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. His newest book is The Floor of Heaven. Read his review of Fodor's Pacific Northwest:
During the long grim, gray winter in Connecticut, one of the best survival techniques I know is to plan wishfully for the summer that will eventually come. Besieged by the icy monotony of seemingly endless months of snow and slush, the prospect of going off somewhere in the bright sunshine with the kids when they’re out of school looms as, quite literally, a life saver. But where? We’ve done all the usual vacation jaunts. They’ve outgrown Disneyland. The Cape beaches are pretty sedentary terrain for restless teenagers. Europe is too expensive. And now that they were older, attending or on the verge of college, I wanted them to have an experience that would engage their minds, get them thinking about the vastness and diversity of an America that they, as parochial New Englanders, too often ignore. And, oh yeah, I wanted all of us to have a good time too. Also, I must admit, my deliberations were influenced by the experiences I had while researching The Floor of Heaven, my new non-fiction book that follows a cowboy turned Pinkerton detective as he goes off to solve a puzzling and dangerous case during the Yukon Gold Rush. I had spent some time in Seattle, home now to a unique and absorbing Yukon Gold Rush museum and back in 1898 the gateway port to the gold fields in the far north. I wanted them to see and enjoy this part of the country as much as I did as when I traveled around researching my book. And so it was settled in my mind: This summer we would go to the Pacific Northwest. And to guide me on this incipient journey, to help me plan it over the long, snowy months, I delved into the new 18th edition of Fodor’s Pacific Northwest. This travel guide is a joy. It’s like having the perfect traveling companion at your side to give you wise advice. It’s definitely not your elderly aunt droning on about all the obvious tourist attractions as she shows you her collection of tedious travel snapshots. Reading Fodor’s, being caught up in the happy promises depicted in the page after page of color pictures, is like having a conversation with a smart, funny, and hip friend. You instinctively feel you’re planning a trip with someone you know you can trust. The tone of the guide is knowledgeable yet refreshingly opinionated, articulate yet unpretentious, idiosyncratic yet comprehensive. For a family that’s forced to be cost conscious, the dollar signs that accompany each hotel or restaurant are a godsend. And the orange stars are the sort of “must see” alert that, along with the easy-to-read maps, make planning both simple and filled with great expectations of what’s to come. So with Fodor’s as our guide, our summer vacation has been planned, and we’re confident we have the inside dope. We’re going to fly to Seattle, do some coffee-house crawling and a trip to the gold rush museum, then rent a car and follow the 101 around Olympic National Park before looping around and heading back the way we came. And for the entire trip, I’ll have my Fodor’s on the front seat telling me where to drive next. Tips from Fodor's Pacific Northwest, 18th Edition

Many of the top attractions are within easy reach of Highway 101, but others are accessible only by trail. To help you explore both the civilized and the wild parts of Oregon's spectacular shore, this book blends two kinds of guides -- a detailed Travel Guide for touring by car and a complete Trail Guide for planning adventures on foot. The book is divided into 18 sections from Washington's Long Beach south to California's Redwood National Park. Each section begins with a Travel Guide that includes an overview map and a description of the area's car-accessible attractions. Both the map and the text are annotated with symbols identifying campgrounds, lighthouses, museums, and other popular destinations. Here too are tips for bicycling, birdwatching, kayaking, canoeing, and horseback riding. The overview maps show major Highway 101 mileposts, so it's easy to use the Travel Guide as a highway logbook. As you drive from one area to the next, simply flip forward or backward through the book to the next Travel Guide map. Following each Travel Guide section are descriptions of that area's hiking trails. To help you choose a hike, symbols in the upper right-hand corner of each hike's heading identify trail features. For example, 64 of the hikes have symbols recommending them as best trails for hikers with children, 36 hikes begin near campgrounds, and 44 pass through old-growth forest. Travelers with limited physical abilities need not miss the fun, because a list at the back of the book describes 42 paved, planked, or graveled trails accessible to everyone. Altogether, the guide covers every trail in Oregon's scenic coastal region. When he loses his job and his wife on the same cold February day, he is struck by inspiration: "A man who couldn't make things go right could at least go. He could quit trying to get out of the way of life. Chuck routine. Live the real jeopardy of circumstance. It was a question of dignity." Driving cross-country in a van named Ghost Dancing, Heat-Moon (the name the Sioux give to the moon of midsummer nights) meets up with all manner of folk, from a man in Grayville, Illinois, "whose cap told me what fertilizer he used" to Scott Chisholm, "a Canadian citizen ... [who] had lived in this country longer than in Canada and liked the United States but wouldn't admit it for fear of having to pay off bets he made years earlier when he first 'came over' that the U.S. is a place no Canadian could ever love." Accompanied by his photographs, Heat-Moon's literary portraits of ordinary Americans should not be merely read, but savored. ![]() Television personality Grant McOmie takes you to the wildlife, wildflowers, waterfalls, and winding roads of the Pacific Northwest.
