Amazon.com Books: Maryland guide
From Antietam to Assateague, from Charles County's Tobacco Road to the mountainous Green Ridge Forest, the natural and historic sites of Maryland are among the nation's richest and most diverse. Now, the newly revised and updated edition of this widely acclaimed guidebook provides a complete, compact, and reliable companion for travel anywhere in the state. First published as a project of the Works Progress Administration in 1940 and last revised for the 1976 bicentennial, Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State has been reorganized, rewritten, and completely updated. Personally traveling nearly all of the 5,000 miles covered, the authors combine first-hand experience with the latest scholarly research. The result is a unique new guidebook that tells the stories of Maryland's familiar people and places and of those often overlooked. Travelers can follow Piscataway Indian trails as well as John Wilkes Booth's escape route; visit the homes of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman as well as the mansions in Annapolis and Hampton; explore the sites of the Crisfield oyster boom and Georges Creek coal rush as well as those of John Brown's raid and the Battle of Antietam. The updated Guide also provides information on the many museums and visitor attractions in Baltimore, Frederick, and other Maryland cities. Supplementing the more than 120 archival photographs are contemporary ones by photographer Edwin Remsberg which show the immensity of changes the state has undergone. Some photos literally look down the same street or road fifty or sixty years later, revealing dramatic urban development or subtle shifts in mood. Fifty new maps by cartographer Bill Nelson offer an accurate guide to every tour. Previous editions of this book have been hailed as definitive touring guides to Maryland. Now once more revised and updated—and this time fully reorganized— Maryland: A New Guide to the Old Line State emerges as a freshly appealing guidebook for native, newcomer, and visitor alike. Author: Earl Arnett, Robert J. Brugger, Edward C. Tucked between the larger commonwealths of Pennsylvania and Virginia and overshadowed by the political maneuverings of its neighbor, Washington, D.C., Maryland has often been overlooked and neglected in studies of state governmental systems. With the publication of Maryland Politics and Government, the challenging demographic diversity, geographic variety, and dynamic Democratic pragmatism of Maryland finally get their due. Two longtime political analysts, Herbert C. Smith and John T. Willis, conduct a sustained inquiry into topics including the Maryland identity, political history, and interest groups; the three branches of state government; and policy areas such as taxation, spending, transportation, and the environment. Smith and Willis also establish a “Two Marylands” model that explains the dominance of the Maryland Democratic Party, established in the post–Civil War era, that persists to this day even in a time of political polarization. Unique in its scope, detail, and coverage, Maryland Politics and Government sets the standard for understanding the politics of the Free State (or, alternately, the Old Line State) for years to come. Streetwise Baltimore Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of Baltimore, Maryland - Folding pocket size travel map with integrated light rail & metro stationsThis map covers the following areas: The glory of spring in Maryland issues sights of trees budding, flowers blooming and a 13 foot tall pepto pink poodle bobbing in the Baltimore Harbor. The American Visionary Art Museum, located on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, is the site of the annual East Coast Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race. Kinetic sculptures are amphibious, human powered works of art, but they may be better described as colossal propelled pool gizmos engineered to run on ingenuityand inspired by, well the inspiration can be from anything. Previous years’ entries included Cake on A Lake with a bee-hived hairdo beauty popping out of a tiered cake as the pastry made its way down the harbor (the beehive is one of Baltimore’s gifts to the world). Past entries have also included a mobile beaver lodge, the Shrimptastic float complete with support shrimp on bikes, the nine-seater PLATYPUS (Personal Longrange All-Terrain Yacht Proven Un-Safe) and the perennial plastic poodle Fifi. Sculptures are optimistically engineered to withstand the 15 mile course that encompasses city streets, a sand trap, a mud hazard and a regatta in the harbor. Bribes are de rigueur for the officials who line the course dressed in costumes holding chicken-on-a-stick signs. After eight hours awards are bestowed including the Golden Flipper, Sock Creature of the Universe (a sock puppet is required of each team), Next to Last and the Dinosaur Award for the most memorable breakdown along the race. Winners of the race are then eligible to compete in the World Championships in Arcata California, providing both pilot(s) and sculpture have survived. Baltimore is also home to the Baltimore Orioles, the Ravens, art museums, shopping, historic sites, and several colleges. But let’s face it, for one day, all that matters is the race - For the Glory! Our pocket size map of Baltimore is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use.
