Just outside Flagstaff, Arizona Highway 180 winds along the western flank of the San Francisco Peaks, which includes Mt. Humphreys, Arizona’s highest point at 12,637 feet. Within an hour’s drive of Flagstaff, the highway descends two thousand feet into a semi-arid grassland, and in under two hours, it rises once more to 7,000 feet and pine forest at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The road passes through large chunks of public land that offer excellent opportunities to see some of the region’s megafauna including elk, pronghorn, mule deer, and the occasional black bear or mountain lion. This is also a premier route for geology enthusiasts, because it passes through a volcanic field with lava caves, perfectly shaped cinder cones, and lava flows other-worldly enough that NASA used them to test spacesuits. The terminus of this route, the Grand Canyon, displays one of the Earth’s most complete geologic records spanning about 1.5 billion years, roughly a third of our planet’s history.
