All players are 3-dimensional and wear the uniforms of two major teams. The teams have been added extra strength as in that the talent scouts have succeeded in recruiting two right-grip marksmen. Together with a left forward that can get back behind the opponents’ goal in “the Gretzky position” and a center forward that can go back into his own zone to build up the attack, there are all the prerequisites for taking your playing standard to new heights. Comprised of the sons and grandsons of runaway American slaves, the Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes was formed in 1895 in Halifax. Twenty-five years before the negro baseball leagues in the United States and twenty-two years before the birth of the National Hockey League, the Coloured League helped to pioneer the emerging sport of ice hockey. In an era when many believed blacks could not endure cold and possessed ankles too weak to effectively skate, these men defied the established myths. With colorful names such as the Africville Sea-Sides and the New Glasgow Speed Boys, the Coloured League would emerge as a premier force in Canadian hockey.Author: George Fosty, Darril Fosty Paperback: 264 pages Company: Nimbus Pub Ltd (2008-12) ISBN: 1551096951 List Price: $19.95 Amazon Price: $17.95 Used Price: $66.53
The U. S. hockey team’s victory at the 1980 Olympics was a “Miracle on Ice”--a miracle largely brought about by Herb Brooks, the legendary coach who forged that invincible team. Famously antagonistic toward the press at Lake Placid, Brooks nonetheless turned to sportswriter John Gilbert after each game, giving his longtime friend and confidant what became the most comprehensive coverage of the ’80 team. This book is Gilbert’s memoir of Brooks. Neither strictly biography or tell-all exposé, Herb Brooks: The Inside Story of a Hockey Mastermind is the story of an extraordinary man as it emerged in the course of a remarkable friendship. Author: John Gilbert Paperback: 320 pages Company: MVP Books (2010-09-27) ISBN: 0760339953 List Price: $15.99 Amazon Price: $10.87
OPEN ICE In this new collection of exquisitely crafted essays, veteran sports writer Jack Falla writes about hockey as he has seen and experienced it over the past fifty years. Reflections on the game, its personalities and arenas, and twenty-five years of commitment to creating his backyard rink are woven into family memories and other fond remembrances. A heartwarming and amusing collection, Open Ice is sure to touch every hockey fan and all those who have grown up loving the game. Praise for Jack Falla's Previous Collection of Essays, Home Ice "literary hot chocolate that will warm your heart." "While Home Ice may be a book about hockey and the charm of backyard rinks, it is more than that, too. It is a book about relationships—between fathers and sons, husbands and wives—and how the game can bridge the gaps that commonly occur between generations in a family... It's a treasure and one that readers will be happy they searched out. Possibly the best hockey book since Ken Dryden's The Game." "A gentle and powerful book."
Finally, hockey's rabid fans have an anthology of their own, a showcase of writing as dynamic and diverse as the fastest sport itself. Carve out a spot on your bench, and in your library, for hockey's most comprehensive playbook. Hockey Plays and Strategies presents all of the popular offensive, defensive, and special teams systems used in today's game, as well as tactical advice on making in-game adjustments and player match-ups at every level of play. Veteran coaches Ryan Walter and Mike Johnston share more than 160 plays, systems, and strategies to control the ice and light up the net. In this one-of-a-kind guide, you'll learn these skills: Puck movement within the neutral zone to set up for attack zone entry and scoring chances on the rush Capitalizing on all odd-man rush scoring chances and shutting down the opposition's opportunities Executing lock-down defensive play in all zones to eliminate good scoring chances and shots on goal More than 25 power play systems for both the one-man and two-man advantage to keep the defense off balance and produce more scoring chances Penalty kill strategies that will stymie any attack and routinely clear the zone Controlling the puck and breaking up the opposition's play with aggressive forechecking and backchecking strategies Controlling the game with top-notch game management tips on line pairings and changes, key momentum changers, and many more in-game adjustments to keep your opponents on their heels throughout the game Whether you're an experienced coach or taking the coaching reigns for the first time, Hockey Plays and Strategies will guide smart, consistent, and winning play. Blue Ice relates the tale of the University of Michigan's hockey program--from its fight to become a varsity sport in the 1920s to its 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships.
This history of the hockey program profiles the personalities who shaped the program--athletic directors, coaches, and players. From Fielding Yost, who made the decision to build the team a rink with artificial ice before the Depression (which ensured hockey would be played during those lean years), to coaches Joseph Barss, who survived World War I and the ghastly Halifax explosion before becoming the program's first coach, to Red Berenson, who struggled to return his alma mater's hockey team to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. Players from Eddie Kahn, who scored Michigan's first goal in 1923, to Brendan Morrison, who upon winning the 1996 national championship with his goal said, "This is for all the [Michigan] guys who never had a chance to win it." BlueIce also explores the players' exotic backgrounds, from Calumet in the Upper Peninsula to Minnesota's Iron Range to Regina, Saskatchewan; how coach Vic Heygliger launched the NCAA tournament at the glamorous Broadmoor Hotel; and how commissioner Bill Beagan transformed the country's premier hockey conference. In Blue Ice, fans of hockey will learn the stories behind the curse of the Boston University Terriers, the hockey team's use of the winged helmet, and the unlikely success of Ann Arbor's home-grown talent. Unlike other sports at the collegiate level, the hockey players at Michigan haven't been motivated by fame or fortune; rather, they came to Michigan get an education and to play the game they loved. When you grow up a hockey player, you are familiar with a ton of hockey equipment. Wayne Gretzky was still playing hockey in the mid 90s when I started playing. So, naturally I purchased a pair of Gretzky skates. These weren't great, but they sufficed for my early street hockey days. As time went by, I started becoming more in tune to what types of hockey gear were out there in the world. I became very familiar with the likes of Bauer, CCM, Koho and Easton. These were my brands of choice.
Bauer had a great pair of skates. I played inline hockey indoors with them. The wheels needed to be changed and I had to by protect toe for those skates, but I treated them well. I'm still ticked off for giving them away. Anyways, I used Easton as my choice of hockey stick. I loved Easton sticks because they were lightweight and I needed a light stick in order to do some fast stick handling. My total hockey experience was pretty good after about 1-2 years. I progressed rather quickly. I found CCM skates to be ok, but what they lacked in performance, they made up in how long they lasted. They were great indoor hockey skates and even came with indoor wheels. So I didn't have to spend a fortune buying them after the fact. I'll round out the indoor equipment list with my hockey pants. I used inline roller hockey pants when playing in my later years. A very cool pair that was great and lasted awhile were my black biscuit pants. Eventually I messed those up and wore them out. My last pair of pants were Mission roller hockey pants and they were sharp. Trust me if you decide to play in an indoor league all of this hockey equipment is worth it. -- Rambane Mickeaton likes to write about hockey and loves Reebok hockey Equipment and CCM Vector Skates. Have you always considered yourselves to be a hockey family, but now your sons and daughters have grown up and left the game behind? Do you find yourself missing that early morning rush, the need to prepare a good breakfast that will give them a good start for their game, and above all the tense and excited atmosphere that seems to spread through the house before a tournament or game?
One way that you can keep the thrill of the game alive in your house is to volunteer to billet youngsters who are still involved in the game. Billeting is a time honoured tradition among hockey parents, who know all too well how expensive hockey can be. Travelling from town to town for games can really add up if a team is forced to pay for accommodations, and billets are always needed. Consider the following: Every year, thousands of parents and grandparents make the competitive hockey dreams of minor hockey players come true by providing them with a place to stay while they are out of town. For many youngsters, these trips would be financially impossible without a place to stay free of charge! If you are or were a hockey family, you know the importance that billeting volunteers played in your own lifestyle. It is always nice to see parents staying involved by helping other families in areas where they were once helped themselves! Billeting will also allow you and your family to retain close ties with the hockey community as a whole. If you can believe it, there are people out there today who can say that Sidney Crosby stayed with them for a weekend during a minor hockey tournament before coming into his own in the big leagues! To be sure, the chance to billet a future genuine hockey super star or even NHL player is rare, but every kid that plays does have this dream to some degree, and their enthusiasm can be very catching. In addition, the young players you billet will bring an atmosphere of excitement into your home that you may have forgotten about after your own kids hung up their skates or moved out. There is really nothing like the pre-game breakfast, talking about the game over a dinner, and about the activity of the next day. If you find that you are missing all of the subtle blessings that being involved in ice hockey has to offer, billeting might just be the way to get back in touch! -- For more information on this article or an international hockey school, visit CHEHockey.com Source: http://www.articletrader.com Thu, 21 Feb 2008 00:00:00 -0600
Folks, here is the biggest game of ice hockey that will make your day and you are still thinking if the hockey tickets will be obtainable. Or else, it may have happened many times that you wanted to grab hockey tickets for the matches of your favourite teams and couldn’t quite manage to do that, be it for the National Hockey League, the country’s biggest game or for the club level games. All curses to long lines, crazy fans, bulky orders, poor management, etc.
And here is the good news! Well, getting Hockey tickets is no more a dilemma now. You don’t need to stand in long snake lines to get them and neither do you need to wait out in the blistering heat. This is the good news coming in for everybody who desires hockey tickets especially when their favourite teams are out on the sports ground. Wow! Hockey tickets are after all gettable! Well Ice hockey is the hot favourite sport in Canada and the nearby regions. Ice hockey tournaments are not just a sporting time but a time when every player and fan strives hard to make their team win. There is an immense unity amongst people and the visitors are always on the edge of their seats supporting their team and promoting the game. But for all this to happen, you need some hockey tickets right? Well, where are you getting them from? Let’s break out the good news. Hockey tickets are being offered by several official and registered legal websites for fans. You don’t need to go to the search engines if you have heard this; you still need to know how to get these hockey tickets. For those wondering if this is legal, yes it is! But the most consolidating factor here can be the commitment of the website to the customers. These websites have a good consumer support and service cell. This is done in a simple manner. The customer needs to look into these websites for advance notifications of the arriving tickets. You can keep an eye on the various offers from time to time. Apart from hockey tickets you may find tickets for various other games. You can book them in advance based on your interests and make an advance payment to the website on the basis of their rules, regulations and methodology. It is necessary to find the authenticity of the website. After this is done the website will offer you the tickets based on your order. You may order a number of tickets in case a group is going together. If the website offers a limit to the number of tickets an individual can purchase the person accompanying you may be required to place a separate order for the tickets. In case you are a resident of another country you can still order the tickets. The stamp charge and the shipping charge will be added to the whole package but your hockey tickets will reach you safely. That’s what really matters, isn’t it. Wish you a happy game ahead. Good luck for your team! -- Timothy Symonds reviews and comments on websites selling hockey tickets and Toronto Maple Leaf Tickets online Source: http://www.articletrader.com Fri, 28 Nov 2008 19:03:13 -0600
Many sports are difficult to learn - but some can be harder then others. One of the more difficult sports to catch on to is hockey. Not only do you have to learn how to balance and maneuver on ice skates - but you also have to learn how to effectively play the game right.
One of the best thing that can help you to improve your game are drills. Drills are the time you use to help practice your technique and to improve on it. Drills can be practicing hitting, flicking or pushing the puck, dribbling, shooting at the goal, or practicing penalty shots. You will get a chance to practice these drills between two players or with the whole team. Unfortunately some of us need a bit more help. That is when we provide you with the best hockey tips that will make you a better player. 1. There’s nothing wrong with going to someone else for advice. Listen to what they have to say and learn from it. 2. Learn from your mistakes. We make mistakes so that we can learn from them not so that we can repeat them. 3. Use what works and improve on it. Sometimes we make shots that we didn’t mean to but they work well. Learn how to improve upon them and keep it. 4. Play by the rules. In order to do this you need to know what the rules are and how to follow them. Don’t be giving your team penalties. 5. Warm up before each game. This will make it easier for you to play the whole game of hockey without getting tired early into it. During your warm up make sure that you stretch out your muscles to prevent injuries. -- Learning Ice Hockey can be difficult - but with the right amount of practice you can do it. Hockey, the great Canadian pastime, is also a booming industry. Hockey is a pervasive sport that is enjoyed by boys, girls, young men and women, and an ever-growing group of “oldtimers”. Certainly not old, but perhaps no longer young, oldtimers continue to enjoy actively participating in the game as they come to terms with the realization that the NHL scouts will not be calling.
Canada is not the only country swept up by this fast paced team sport. Where did this fascination with hockey first begin? Some say it may have come from the British field sports of “hurley” or “shinty”, or perhaps the French version of field hockey which used a wooden stick called a “hoquet” to bat a ball or cork around. Nevertheless, somewhere, sometime during a long cold Canadian winter, some hardy folk tried playing a version of field hockey on ice. The game soon became well known in Scandinavian countries as well as in Russia. So it is no wonder that North American hockey organizations are now offering hockey schools and tournaments abroad. Of particular interest to many hockey enthusiasts, especially the oldtimers, is the opportunity to combine a hockey tournament with a destination holiday through different European countries. Imagine, after a day on the ice in international competition, enjoying some sightseeing: mountain biking or hiking through mountains in Austria, touring quaint villages and castles in Italy, and attending an authentic Oktoberfest dinner in Germany. An organized international hockey tournament holiday creates the perfect opportunity for your partner to join in on your hockey friendships. Retired professional hockey players offer hockey schools and fantasy camps in many locations, presenting opportunities to learn from and play with the best all over world. But if a European vacation is too big an undertaking, you can still travel with your family and friends, and enjoy your sport within North America, in such places as Lake Placid, Chicago, Las Vegas and Montreal. So, don’t worry if the NHL hasn’t come knocking on your door. There truly is a hockey experience for every hockey enthusiast and it may even take you to a vacation destination that you never dreamed of! -- For more information on this article or a minor hockey tournament, visit CHEHockey.com Source: http://www.articletrader.com Tue, 02 Jun 2009 00:50:54 -0500
The training that you will get in a hockey school is very different from simply playing hockey with your friends at the nearest frozen pond or skate rink. It is also very different compared to hockey that you play during your physical education class in school. This is because hockey schools make it a point to cover all the avenues that are necessary in professional hockey training. Having said all of this, what could one expect in terms of program content in the different programs found in hockey school? While there are differences that exist between programs, rest assured that all of them are designed to make a professional player out of you.
In the different programs of hockey schools, game playing is highly prioritized. Whether you are a young boy interested in playing hockey or an aspiring collegiate hockey superstar, the main priority of hockey schools is to play this game with as much passion as you can - while staying within the rules of play. The sessions that you will go through in this game are rigorous but are also designed to bring about great results, a higher appreciation for the game of hockey and to know how to function at high tempos using minimal down time while on the ice. Aside from this, the programs are also designed to develop a sense of teamwork among players and a sense of respect for your opponents, thus dispelling the notion that hockey is a brutal game that does not care for others. Aside from this, the program aims to develop motivation within one's self and a sense of organization, discipline and creativity. Programs in hockey camps also have portions that are dedicated to Team Concepts. This is also related to one's age and ability to play the game. In this portion, team skill development is tackled. You learn how to pass the puck back and forth through drills, as well as timing the flow. You will practice puck support to be able to defend it really well. Offensive zone aggression is also important, and this includes learning how to gain body position and drive the net. After offensive zone aggression, you also learn proper defensive body positioning, body contact and angling. Both the goalie and the defenders will learn to work as one unit as they practice their passing skills and communication skills. Apart from this, cycling high and cycling low is also taken up. Team tactical play is also another program offered by many hockey camps. Here, you work on forecheck as well as transitioning to various offensive zone attacks. When you have mastered this, you can move on to backcheck as well as defensive zone positioning, mastering offensive positioning and defensive positioning is enhanced with neutral zone transition too. And finally, in team tactical play you learn the rudiments of special teams, how to conduct power plays, learning all about penalty kills and dominating face offs. These are just some of the programs you would expect to experience in hockey schools - programs that have strict rules, exhaustive drills but everything you need to turn your game into a professional one. -- Richmond Hockey School offers lessons and training that teaches kids and youth competitive hockey skills designed to improve overall individual and team playing ability. side of world, probably next only to soccer and rugby. There are more than a few versions of hockey played such as field, inline, rink and ice hockey. All use particular gear and equipment.
The basic apparatus of hockey is a stick, which may be about three feet long. Hockey sticks are round and generally made of wood sheltered with fiberglass; aluminum sticks are also used and both varieties feature suede and rubber grips. Field hockey sticks have hooked bases, which are rounded at one end and flat at the other to correctly smack the ball into the goal. Ice hockey and inline hockey sticks have broader bases and most are considered for right-handed players. Holding hockey stick the upper portion of the stick with your left hand and the lower portion with your right, the base curves forward, forming a shallow scoop for catching and guiding the puck. In hockey uses a molded plastic ball and ice hockey, inline hockey use hard vulcanized rubber discs called pucks. Both hockey balls are sized according to hockey associations. The objective of any version of hockey is to guide the ball and puck towards the goal net. Goal nets are made of by steel frames and have durable synthetic nylon nets. Protective equipment and team jerseys are just as important as the skates or footwear, the stick and the puck. Protective hockey equipment is comprised of a chest protector, a helmet, large padded shorts, shin pads, a neck protector, and other gear. Make sure you use all protective equipment whenever you play hockey. Some pick-up games of hockey are not played with protective equipments, but safety should come first. Hockey is a collision sport and injuries do happen. But with certified, quality, well-fitting gear, the frequency and severity of these injuries can be decreased. Helmets and Facemasks Mostly hockey injuries happen to the head and face. Lacerations (cuts) to the head and face, along with concussions, have been minimized by the mandatory wearing of helmets and face masks at most levels of play. In youth, high school, and college hockey, helmets and facemasks are mandatory. When buying a helmet, make sure it fits snugly. Look for helmets with the seal of approval either from the HECC (Hockey Equipment Certification Council) Gloves and Elbow Pads Your gloves must give maximum protection without affecting your grip. The thumb, the palm, and the cuff of the wrist are regularly hit by opposing players' sticks. Buy gloves with maximum protection over the thumb. Make sure the palm of the glove is smooth, so you can feel the stick in your hand. The cuff of the glove should be elastic but still offer protection. And certain the laces of the gloves are always tied and in good condition, your elbow pads fit well and cover the sides and the back part of the elbow. Leg Guards Better leg guards have a knee cup pad, twist padding to cover the sides of the knee, and wide side flaps. Make sure they are not too large and the length is correct. -- Kevin Pierce is a specialist in providing ice hockey equipment, hockey gear, hockey skates for all of us. The sport of the hockey is now having lots of changes. There are now ice hockey and field hockey in the Olympic Sports that made it more interesting. This kind of sports is really exciting and is thrilling to watch. The players involve in here must be fast and should posses lots of skill in order to be competitive with other players.
The Roller hockey sports is one of the most popular sports in the field of sports as this is one of the original game of hockey. It is first played using the traditional quad roller skates. But as the time evolved the new designs are invented and they are now using the inline skates that makes it called as the Inline hockey sports. There are now different kinds of skates and the choice may vary in the kind of sports or in the place where the game will be conducted. There are also different choices when it comes to the kind of gloves. The rules and the goals of winning may vary from the kind of sport they are playing. When it comes to inline hockey games the goalies are using a unique catch glove while when it comes to quad hockey they are blocking the shots with a batting glove. The inline hockey is also called as the street hockey and the quad hockey is also known as the hardball hockey. These two sports also differ in the amount of time that they are played. The two different hockey sports are very much liked by lots of people. As a matter of fact the quad hockey has been a part of the Olympic sport. This may also surprise you but even women are now entering this specific kind of hockey sports. Some of the countries are of course not open for the playing sport on ice. The hockey sport may vary from time to time and there will be more exciting changes. -- The Blue Jackets are an NHL team from Columbus, Ohio. Playing sports is great, but even better if you want to take the extra mile and actually enroll in a school that will help you reach your potentials. This is where a hockey school comes in. But before you go on and enroll in a hockey school, make sure you prepare yourself first. Preparing yourself for hockey school is important because you will be able to adjust to the system better. If you can adjust easier, then you will spend more time honing your skills rather than trying to get used to the routine.
Preparation for enrollment in hockey school begins with making sure you are in top condition. Because of this, it would be very good for you to set a daily training routine even if only for a couple of hours. You can concentrate on building up your strength three times a day and use another three days to practice balancing exercises and other moves that are necessary in hockey. If you live near a pond during the winter season, then by all means spend time here and practice your routine. If it is the warmer months, then you could simply practice in a hockey or ice skating rink instead. The bottom line is, prior to your enrollment in hockey school you need to spend a lot of time practicing your skills. Second, preparation for enrollment in hockey school will mean hitting the books. Hockey is not just about brute force, but also about mental tactics. When we say hit the books, it simply means that you should make sure you go over the rule book to memorize all the rules of the game. Apart from this, you should also read up on basic foundation moves in hockey. These are the ones that are going to be taken up in hockey school if you are a first timer - but if they see that you are more advanced in terms of skills and knowledge then you could probably skip this area already and move on one placement higher. Third, it is also imperative that you get your schedules in order. Hockey school will bring about some changes in your daily routine, so you will want to organize everything in order to get the most idea schedule around. Hockey school has daily training for at least one and a half hours per day. Add your commute to and from hockey school, time spent preparing before training and getting your stuff ready for leaving and you probably have for yourself three hours devoted to this activity alone. If you are a student, organize a study schedule so you will not be left behind in school. When you get home from hockey school you might feel a bit tired and thus might end up sleeping instead of studying. This might cause some problems later on, so make sure you attend to it. When you can figure out your optimum times for hockey and the other important stuff you have, then you can say that you are well prepared for hockey school. -- Vancouver Hockey School offers lessons and training that teaches kids and youth competitive hockey skills designed to improve overall individual and team playing ability. Hockey is far more than a sport to most Canadians, it's a catalyst for memories of youth. Whether it's playing hockey on a frozen pond after the snow has been shoveled to the edges, or playing on the street in between cars and until the street lights come on.
Investing time and effort on interactive programs that take hockey players step by step through the entire process of learning all of the techniques involved to play well enough. the hockey game brings back crystal clear memories for most Canadians. That's why hockey means so much more than just a sport it's a nostalgic reminder of a less troubled past, and a reminder of a happy youth. Usually it resembles some kind of train wreck in front of the goalie, with shot after shot, as the goalie goes down and up time and time again. Defensemen sliding desperately, risking injury to stop the puck, in the hopes, that the final seconds will elapse and the hockey guide will be theirs. Your necessary equipment for hockey is complete when you have gloves, shin pads, pants, stockings, elbow pads, athletic support, shoulder pads, and a helmet. You are very wise to wear a helmet, whether required or not. Not only will it protect you, but it also will give you confidence in your early years of developing skating skills. Now you should be able to score goals, pleasing yourself and your team! Let us take a look first at the various ways of shooting and of beating the goalkeeper there is an underlying factor behind these teaching incentives and one of this is to give all the opportunity to see how enjoyable a career with the right training and a certain degree of talent. Anything that is technologically advanced is certain to catch the eye or the attention of any young person already expressed interest in learning how to play hockey. Thus, before do this, you should know a very important fact about shooting. Your team will do well to average 30 to 40 shots on goal per game. If you are a forward, you may have only six to eight shots in a game. In an hour of scrimmage practice, this average may be only slightly higher. You can hope to win only if you have a thorough knowledge, guide and information of the target areas, which means you will have to put in long, hard practice sessions in the net. -- Your one stop complete guide to hockey information on the web today www.thegoalkeeperclub.com Source: http://www.articletrader.com |
