Although modern advertising as we know it today emerged only in the 1900s, advertising has been used as a marketing tool from late colonial and early national periods. Understandably - since both trade and the art of printing were still in their infancy - early advertisements were a far cry from the enchanting masterpieces that stare out of the pages of publications today. In fact the print in many of these early ads was so illegible, that it prompted Benjamin Franklin to observe: "If you should ever have any secrets that you wish to be well kept, get them printed in [the] papers." The scene changed significantly in the 1840s. Vast improvements in printing, mass-production of packaged goods, increased dependence of farmers and small-towns folks on factory-made necessities, the emergence of the railroad and the fresh interest newspapers began showing in advertisements all worked in favor of this industry. Most advertising during the early national era was repetitious and unimaginative, and completely lacking in customer appeal. This changed very quickly during and after the fourth decade of the nineteenth century. . To quote Daniel A. Pope, "This (the dependence of manufacturers) necessitated the growth of advertising agencies and also tipped the balance in advertising from information to persuasion." This 4-CD set has brought together hundreds of glorious examples of early advertisements that appeared in newspapers, in independent publications, as posters and even as concert hall ticket stubs. The well-preserved and digitalized images enable you to view these reproductions in a convenient and detailed manner. Dating from the early 1840s these advertisements serve as a valuable guide to the study of the beginnings of modern advertisement.

This rare and classic cake was made during the Cultural Revolution in the early 1970's. It is a Green Aged Pu-erh that has matured over the years. The fine mellowed taste is a real prize or special gift tea. About 330 grams. This cake was shipped to Hong Kong back in the 1970's and has the Simplified Characters on the wrappers. They call these Iron Cakes because they are compressed by machine under heavy iron molds to form the cakes. The wrappers are in great shape considering the age of this tea. It has been well preserved in dry storage. This early production was done in the Kunming Factory. Can be infused many times and is one of the best known old cakes out there. 330 grams. Weight is approximate.
