A guitar amp is as responsible for the actual sound of an electric guitar as the guitar itself. The Guitar Amp Handbook takes players — whether novice, experienced amateur, or professional — inside the amplifier to help them better understand the magic of that mysterious, often-neglected box that pumps out all the tone. This book guides guitarists in selecting the best amplifier for their style of music, and helps them set up that amp to sound its best, maintain and modify it, and ultimately to craft the most responsive instrument possible from this "other half" of the sound chain. Tutorials, parts lists, basic maintenance, and diagrams for building a small range of classic-style tube amps are included. Also featured are tricks for getting "loud" guitar sounds at home without waking the neighbors and tips on how to get the unit that best suits your sound and technique without overspending on unnecessary features.Author: Dave Hunter Paperback: 240 pages ISBN13: 9780879308636, Condition: NEW, Notes: Brand New from Publisher. Morgan Jones' Valve Amplifiers has been widely recognised as the most complete guide to valve amplifier design, modification, analysis, construction and maintenance written for over 30 years. As such it is unique in presenting the essentials of 'hollow-state' electronics and valve amp design for engineers and enthusiasts in the familiar context of current best practice in electronic design, using only currently available components. The author's straightforward approach, using as little maths as possible, and lots of design knowhow, makes this book ideal for those with a limited knowledge of the field as well as being the standard reference text for experts in valve audio and a wider audience of audio engineers facing design challenges involving valves.Design principles and construction techniques are provided so readers can devise and build from scratch designs that actually work. Morgan Jones takes the reader through each step in the process of design, starting with a brief review of electronic fundamentals relevant to valve amplifiers, simple stages, compound stages, linking stages together, and finally, complete designs. Practical aspects, including safety, are addressed throughout. The third edition includes a new chapter on distortion and many further new and expanded sections throughout the book, including: comparison of bias methods, constant current sinks, upper valve choice, buffering and distortion, shunt regulated push-pull (SRPP) amplifier, use of oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers, valve cooling and heatsinks, US envelope nomenclature and suffixes, heater voltage versus applied current, moving coil transformer source and load terminations. * The practical guide to analysis, modification, design, construction and maintenance of valve amplifiers * The fully up-to-date approach to valve electronics * Essential reading for audio designers and music and electronics enthusiasts alike Author: Morgan Jones Paperback: 640 pages Company: Newnes (2003-11-12) ISBN: 0750656948 List Price: $65.95 Amazon Price: $55.30 Used Price: $62.59
By the U.S. Navy (1951). First came the vacuum tube, then the transistor, right? Not really. In between there is another "lost" entity. Electronics engineers of the 1950's believed the rugged little magnetic amplifier was going to replace the less reliable vacuum tube in all its functions up to a megacycle. Originating in the USA but adopted and developed by the Nazis for the V2 missile, the mag amp after WWII found a clique of boosters among U.S. electronics engineers. Still evident in some regulators, the mag amp can also magnify, modulate, switch, invert, convert, phase shift, multiply, and even compute. It requires zero maintenance and can handle thousands of amperes. Modulate your Tesla coil with a mag amp. 43 illustrations. Not a reprint. Completely reset and redesigned.A Magnetic Amplifier Bibliography is published separately by High Voltage Press.Author: The U.S. Navy Paperback: 24 pages Company: High Voltage Press (2000-07-01) ISBN: 0970961855 List Price: $7.75 Amazon Price: $6.23 Used Price: $25.16 Amazon.com: amplifier in

How to choose the right speakers for your amplifier or AV receiver
From:http://www.1topsupplier.com/buy-speaker/ Key words: amplifier, speaker, receiver Impedance: Measured in ohms (Ω), typically 4, 6 or 8. The lower the impedance, the more demand the speakers place on the amplifier, which is why matching the impedance of your speakers to your amplifier is important. Most home theatre speakers will be 6 or 8Ω, as are most home theatre amplifiers. Hi-Fi (2 channel) amplifiers are often capable of handling impedances of anywhere from 8Ω, all the way down to 2Ω. Consequently, speakers designed for 2 channel systems come in a wider range of impedances. If, for example, you connected 6Ω speakers to an 8Ω amplifier, they would put more of a load on the amp than it’s designed to handle, and produce less than dynamic (clean, effortless) sound. You then run the risk of the amplifier overheating and shutting down, or worse, burning out altogether. This will only happen after you notice distortion in increasing amounts though. Thankfully, most modern amps and AV receivers have protection circuits, thermal fuses and the like, to shut them down in the event of overload. A common complaint of people with mismatched speaker/amp combinations is that they shut down during loud action scenes in movies, or after 2-3 minutes of music at a moderate level. The amplifier/AV receiver often gets unfairly blamed in this scenario. Power handling: An often misunderstood specification. Measured in watts, it is best represented by RMS (root means square.) This figure tells us how much power the speaker can comfortably handle for a sustained period of time. Also referred to as continuous, or nominal power. Some speakers only list a peak power rating. This can be measured in many different ways. It’s essentially a rating for the mechanical limitations of the speaker, and often represents how much power a speaker can take before it produces audible distortion. Depending on the type of signal being played back, the speaker may reach its mechanical limits at well below its rated power - for example, bass-heavy movie soundtracks and extremely high frequencies will challenge a speakers mechanical ability. For this reason, power handling doesn’t necessarily translate as a speakers ability to produce sound as many would have you believe. -- How to choose the right speakers for your amplifier or AV receiver Source: http://www.articletrader.com Wed, 25 Jul 2007 00:00:00 -0500
There are different stages of a super heterodyne receiver namely antenna or aerial, radio frequency amplifier, frequency converter stage, intermediate amplifier stage, second detector, audio frequency amplifier and loud speaker.
An aerial intercepts the electromagnetic waves. Voltage induced in the antenna re communicated to the receiver input circuit by means of a feeder wire or lead in wire. A parallel tuned circuit at the input of the receiver responds only to voltage at the desired carrier frequency and rejects voltage at all other frequencies. The voltage so picked up is fed to the input of radio frequency amplifier stage. Radio frequency amplifier stage is generally a tuned voltage small signal amplifier tuned to the desired carrier frequency. The chief functions of radio amplifier stage are to amplify the input signal voltage to a suitably high level before feeding it to the frequency mixer which contributes large noise. Thus signal to noise ratio is improved and the other function is to provide discrimination of selectivity against image frequency signal and intermediate frequency signal. Frequency converter stage consists of a local oscillator and frequency mixer. To the frequency mixer are fed both the local oscillator voltage as well as signal v0oltage. The mixer, being a non linear device, produces at its output the various inter modulation terms. The difference frequency voltage is picked up by the tuned circuit in the output circuit of the mixer. The difference frequency is called the intermediate frequency, the value of which is constant of a receiver. For all wave receivers, typical value of intermediate frequency is four hundred sixty five kilo hertz or four hundred fifty six kilo hertz. Some times two separate transistors are used as local oscillator and frequency mixer but more often only one transistor functions both as local oscillator and frequency mixer. Such a transistor is then referred to as a frequency converter transistor. Thus with the help of frequency converter stage, radio frequency signal of any carrier frequency is converted into similarly modulated fixed frequency intermediate frequency signal. Intermediate frequency amplifier stage consists of two or more stages of fixed frequency voltage amplifier having a three decibel bandwidth of ten kilo hertz for a amplitude modulation broadcast. This intermediate frequency amplifier provides most of the receiver amplification and selectivity. Output of the last intermediate frequency amplifier stage is fed to this second detector which is generally a linear diode detector. Output of this detector is the original modulation frequency voltage. For satisfactory operation of this detector that is for linear detection, it is necessary that the carrier voltage fed to it be at least one volt. Audio frequency output from second detector is fed to the audio frequency amplifier which provides original amplification. Then amplified voltage is fed to the loud speaker. -- Tymon Hytem has worked in the electronics feild for the past 15 years. Methods of amplitude modulation can be put in the two categories namely Linear modulation methods and Square law modulation methods. Linear modulation method utilizes the linear region of the current voltage characteristics of the amplifying device that is transistor or electron tube. Square law modulation method utilizes the square law region of some current voltage characteristics of a diode or transistor or electron tube. A large number of linear modulation methods have been devised and have been used to varying degree. These methods are namely linear shunt plate modulation or anode choke modulation, linear series plate modulation, grid bias modulation, cathode modulation, suppressor grid modulation, screen grid modulation, collector modulation.
Square law modulation circuits make use of non linear current voltage characteristics of diodes or triodes and are in general suited for use at low voltages. Important square law modulation methods are square law diode modulation and balanced modulator. In linear shunt plate modulation the modulation voltage is inserted in the plate circuit of a class C amplifier tuned to the carrier frequency. The plate currents of modulated amplifier tube and the modulating amplifier tube find parallel paths or shunt paths. The carrier voltage is applied at the input of the class C modulated amplifier. Linear series plate modulation makes use of a linear class C tunes amplifier as modulated amplifier. This tuned amplifier is so designed that a linear relation exists between the root mean square value of peak tank current and the plate supply voltage for constant grid excitation. The modulating voltage appears in series with the plate supply voltage of the tuned modulated amplifier. The merits of linear series plate modulation are small distortion, high plate circuit efficiency and easy adjustments. Grid bias modulation uses a class C amplifier in which audio modulated voltage is placed in series with the fixed grid bias. In Cathode modulation the modulation voltage is introduced in the cathode circuit of the class C modulator amplifier. It has characteristics intermediate between those of grid bias modulation and plate modulation. Suppressor grid modulation uses a pent code in a class C modulated amplifier wherein the modulating voltage is applied to the suppressor which is biased sufficiently negatively. It provides linear modulation up to eighty percent modulation depth. Screen grid modulation is applied at the screen grid. The distortion produced is low. In the collector modulation method the modulating voltage is applied in the collector circuit of tuned class C amplifier in push pull arrangement. It has the merits of high linearity of modulation, high collector circuit efficiency and high power output per transistor. Square law modulation methods makes use of non linear current voltage characteristics of diodes or triodes and are suited only for use at low voltages. Square law diode modulation uses non linear region of the current voltage dynamic characteristics of a diode. -- Tymon Hytem has worked in the electronics feild for the past 15 years. People often underestimate the huge impact that an amplifier has on the overall sound quality of a guitar. Spending thousands on a guitar that will end up being combined with a cheap, tinny amplifier simply won't do. It's for this reason that we have prepared this short advice article to help you get the sound you want whilst playing.
The first thing to remember is that maximum output is not the most important trait of an amp. It's all very well being able to burst an eardrum or two, but this is no use when an audience can't hear the music at the same time. Similarly, spending he amounts of money on equipment just because it has a brand name attached is usually a mistake. Instead, you should assess what exactly you intend to use your amp for. A solid-state amplifier (which is fully electronic) is usually the most economical option for anyone who wants to practise, but they often lack the correct tones for playing live. If you intend to perform in public, it might be worth opting for an all-tube amplifier which will cost considerably more but will produce the warmer, more resonant tones you're looking for. Effects are also a point to consider when making a purchase. Amplifiers come with varying amounts of channels, sound effects, control knobs and sometimes headphone jacks. Some people will want to play only using the original sound, but for others there may be added emphasis on reverb effects etc. Lastly, choose an amp that suits your guitar. If you have a bass guitar, there's no point in buying an amp that specializes in high notes. Just a thought. A musician who takes their craft seriously will invest in the best music equipment possible. This process is no different for the guitarist in need of a good quality guitar amplifier. If you are new to the world of guitar amplifiers, don't let the various brands and models confuse you. The basics below should help you on your way to making the right choice.
There are four basic options when choosing a guitar amplifier. Amplifiers are available in tube, digital, hybrid, and solid-state. Tube amplifiers were the first amplifiers in use. While this remains the older model amp, many guitarists prefer it as it produces a more natural sound than the other models. The output is also greater and is much louder in comparison to the other models. However, since tube amplifiers are built with glass tubes, transporting them needs to be done with care to avoid breaking the tubes. Digital amplifiers are one of the more expensive types of amps due to their ability to mimic various ranges of amplifier sounds. You can find lower-end versions of the digital amplifier, however you get what you pay for, and the sound quality will be lower. Many guitarists enjoy digital amplifiers as they are able to experiment more with different styles and sounds. The hybrid guitar amplifiers do exactly as the name implies. They are a combination of the tube amplifier and solid-state amps. Unlike the sound quality you can achieve with a regular tube amplifier, the more natural sound will be lacking. The hybrid amplifier is a good option for those who want a decent amp but are on a budget. Solid state amplifiers are simply made with transitors rather than the glass tubes. This may be a preference for those who tote around their amplifiers often, as their isn't as much worry about breaking the tubes. Sound quality on these amplifiers are decent but still not as favored as the original tube amplifiers. Before choosing your next guitar amplifier, you may consider asking to try out the various models before you buy. Don't hesitate to ask to try before you buy. Most music stores are more than happy to cooperate in order to help in the buying process. -- Find a huge selection of new and used amplifiers and save money on your next guitar amplifier purchase by visiting Amplifier Depot. The amplitude radio transmitter using high frequency power level of carrier has the following constituent stages namely master oscillator, buffer amplifier or isolating amplifier, harmonic generators, class C power amplifiers, modulated amplifier and the modulating amplifier. All high frequency power level of carrier requires all there stages.
The master oscillator generates oscillations of desired frequency with high constancy of frequency. The generated frequency is required to remain constant within close limits in spite of variations in the supply voltage, ambient temperature and temperature of components of load. Further frequency variations with time and with age of the transistor should be avoided. If the master oscillator directly drives a harmonic generator or class C power amplifier which draw input current then power is drawn from the master oscillator. This results in loading of master oscillator which in turn causes variation of effective resistance of the tank circuit of the oscillator and hence results in frequency variation. Accordingly a buffer amplifier or isolating amplifier is placed between the master oscillator and the harmonic generators. This buffer amplifier does not draw any input current and hence causes no loading of the master oscillator. Changes in carrier frequency due to variations in loading are thus avoided. Usually the master oscillators generate voltage at a frequency which is a sub multiple of the carrier frequency that is the frequency of the radiated power. Basically these harmonic generators are class C tuned amplifiers in which the output radio frequency voltage is first distorted through class C operation and then the tuned circuit in the output circuit of amplifier selects the desired harmonic frequency. The radio frequency voltage generated by the master oscillator has usually very small power of the order of few watts. The power level is required to be raised to the final high value in a chain of class C amplifier having high output circuit efficiency of the order of seventy percent. The modulated amplifier is a class C amplifier usually of the push pull type and is modulated by audio modulating voltage from modulating amplifier. High efficiency series plate modulation is most popularly used in high power radio broadcast and radio telephone transmitters. Grid bias modulation and suppressor grid modulation are used particularly for modulation at low power levels. The modulating amplifier is usually a class B push pull amplifier and feeds audio power into the modulating amplifier in the plate circuit, the control grid circuit or the suppressor grid circuit depending upon the method of modulation used. Class B operation is generally used because of high plate circuit efficiency. While the Class A modulating amplifier are also sometimes used particularly in low power transmitters. -- Tymon Hytem has worked in the electronics feild for the past 15 years. A car stereo amplifier is a necessity if you take your car audio seriously. A car stereo amplifier is what helps determine the type of audio output your stereo will produce. If you have never experienced what a car amplifier can do, you will be blown away at the quality of sound that can be achieved. In fact, once you hear your favorite music played with the power of an amp, you will be instantly hooked.
When you decide to purchase a car amplifier, one of your first decisions will be where to place it in your vehicle. You have several options but keep in mind an area where the amplifier will have the best air circulation. Common areas to install the amplifier include the trunk or under a seat. Also remember that the amplifier needs to be grounded so a metal surface to attach it to is key. Most people will have professionals install their car amps. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, the next step is deciding how to connect the amplifier to your car stereo. RCA cables are the common cable type to use and they are used to connect the low level radio output to the low level input of the amp. There are other cable set-ups to use and some precautions to take before hooking up cables. These precautions should be laid out fairly well in the user's manual. There are a few things to keep in mind when installing a car amplifier: 1. The amplifier should be installed on top of metal as a ground conductor. 2. Ground cables should be connected before the RCA cables. 3. Avoid installing power cables next to RCA cables to help avoid extra noise. Again, the user manual should go over these elements in depth. Number one is very important, since newer model cars are made mainly of fiberglass, it may be difficult finding a solid piece of metal to attach the amplifier to. When it comes to such technical issues as installing a car amplifier, you may be better off spending the extra money having one professionally installed. You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration. However, if you are adamant about doing it yourself, research online as well as reading the user's manual thoroughly to be safe and avoid any damage. -- Find a wide selection and huge discounts on new car stereo amplifiers by visiting Amplifier Depot. Amplifier-Loudspeaker Matching Formula in a home theater system
Ozhan Atalay In terms of power, we compare the power of amplifier (watts) by the power handling capacity (watts) of the loudspeaker. Power capacity of the loudspeaker is measured by watts but actually the power of a speaker is measured by sound production capacity which is measured by decibel (dB). dB does not have linearity with power handling capacity (watts) The electricity signal is transformed to sound energy by loudspeakers. Power handling capacity of the speaker is measured by watts but sound production capability is measured by dB. For instance there are speakers; both of them are 100 Watts. One produces 90 dB (1 mt 1watt) and other produces 93 dB. Second one does provide twice volume of sound by the same power compared the first. By using the program below, you may easily calculate how much dB that you may provide by your system or you may choose your amplifier or speaker in accordance with your demand. This unique software has been prepared in Ms Excel and does not have any similar one throughout world. Calculation of sound volume has so many complexities. The furniture, room dimensions, floor coverings, windows, heat, humidity, number of people at the room etc my software can not provide 100% accuracy but it gives idea and guides listener through more conscious way. According to me, a full-range system should provide at least 93 dB of sound. Attacks of a symphonic orchestra may come close to such levels. So if you tend to set up a full range system, your aim should be to achieve 93 dB sound at the listening chair. Input the parameters of your system to the software below and calculate what you have at your listening chair. In other words, put your desired parameters and calculate what hardware you should purchase. I would like to add a foot note here that when you use the formula, result will be limited to the power of your speaker. If your power amplifier is powerful than your speaker, if yes, then input your speaker's power to formula. For instance assume your speaker has 100 Watts of power but your amplifier has 250 Watts of power. Your sound will be limited to your speaker, hence input 100 Watts of amplifier power but not 250 Watts. Let me know about your experiment.
