I, Robot The three laws of Robotics:
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
2) A robot must obey orders givein to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future--a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.

Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world--all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov's trademark.

How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion

An inspired and hilarious look at how humans can defeat the inevitable robot rebellion—as revealed by a robotics expert.

How do you spot a robot mimicking a human? How do you recognize and then deactivate a rebel servant robot? How do you escape a murderous “smart” house, or evade a swarm of marauding robotic flies? In this dryly hilarious survival guide, roboticist Daniel H. Wilson teaches worried humans the keys to quashing a robot mutiny.

From treating laser wounds to fooling face and speech recognition, besting robot logic to engaging in hand-to-pincer combat, How to Survive a Robot Uprising covers every possible doomsday scenario facing the newest endangered species: humans. And with its thorough overview of current robot prototypes—including giant walkers, insect, gecko, and snake robots—How to Survive a Robot Uprising is also a witty yet legitimate introduction to contemporary robotics. Full of cool illustrations, and referencing some of the most famous robots in pop-culture, How to Survive a Robot Uprising is a one-of-a-kind book that is sure to be a hit with all ages.

Robot Dreams
This moving, charming graphic novel about a dog and a robot shows us in poignant detail how powerful and fragile relationships are. After a Labor Day jaunt to the beach leaves the robot rusted, immobilized in the sand, the dog must return alone to the life they shared. But the memory of their friendship lingers, and as the seasons pass, the dog tries to fill the emotional void left by the loss of his closest friend, making and losing a series of friends, from a melting snowman to epicurean anteaters.  But for the robot, lying rusting on the beach, the only relief from loneliness is in dreams.

“Let me carry you,” said the Robot.

“I’ll carry you in my heart, and shelter you from the cold and storms.”

When the Robot offers her a home in the empty space where his heart used to be, neither of them can predict what astonishing things will happen. Together the newfound friends set off on a memorable journey that will change them both.

Robot Building for Beginners (Technology in Action)

“I wrote this book because I love building robots. I want you to love building robots, too. It took me a while to learn about many of the tools and parts in amateur robotics. Perhaps by writing about my experiences, I can give you a head start.”—David Cook

Robot Building for Beginners, Second Edition is an update of David Cook’s best-selling Robot Building for Beginners. This book continues its aim at teenagers and adults who have an avid interest in science and dream of building household explorers. No formal engineering education is assumed.

The robot described and built in this book is battery powered and about the size of a lunchbox. It is autonomous. That is, it isn’t remote controlled.

You’ll begin with some tools of the trade, and then work your way through prototyping, robot bodybuilding, and eventually soldering your own circuit boards. By the book’s end, you will have a solid amateur base of understanding so that you can begin creating your own robots to vacuum your house or maybe even rule the world!

What you’ll learn How to build a robot from scratch Where to obtain parts and tools to get you started How to build the brain—the intelligence—using the motherboard How to create the body and become a Dr. Frankenstein How to get your robot moving and ruling Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at teenagers and adults who have an avid interest in science and dream of building household explorers. No formal engineering education is assumed.

Robots and Empire Isaac Asmiov's classic novel about the decline and fall of Solaria. Gladia Delmarre's homeworld, the Spacer planet Solaria, has been abandoned - by its human population. Countless robots remain there. And when traders from Settler worlds attempt to salvage them, the robots of Solaria turn to killing...in defiance of the Three Laws of Robotics. Pax Robotica Long ago, Gladia's robots Daneel and Giskard played a vital role in opening the worlds beyond the Solar system to Settlers from Earth. Now the conscience-stricken robots are faced with an even greater challenge. Either the sacred Three Laws of Robotics are in ruins - or a new, superior Law must be established to bring peace to the galaxy. With Madam Gladia and D.G. Baley - the captain of the Settler traders and a descendant of the robots' friend Elijah Baley - Daneel and Giskard travel to the robot stronghold of Solaria...where they uncover a sinister Spacer plot to destroy Earth itself.

One Individual Nano Hexbug Robot with Online Code - Colors May Vary The Robotic Creature that behaves like a real bug! Putting the 'micro' in Micro Robotic Creatures How small can you go? Using common locomotion principles Innovation First set out to make a really small HEXBUG that gave the appearance of being smart. How will it react when it encounters an obstacle? What happens if it gets turned over? The first prototypes of the Nano were inspired by the old vibrating football games. More recent examples of vibrating motion are the BEAM Vibrobots, and then the Bristlebots. Thirty some iterations, a few years, and dozens of designs later the Nano was born. To give just a taste of how much development went into this product, they engineered and rapid prototyped over 150 variations of legs alone. How it works. The motor inside the Nano rotates a counterweight that causes forces up and down. The down force causes the legs to bend and the Nano moves forward. The up force causes the creature to hop lifting the front legs off the ground and allowing the legs to unbend. This up and down movement repeats several hundred times per second causing the Nano to move forward. The Nano creature's ability to flip over by itself is due to the rotating forces caused by the motor and the unique internal and external chassis design (and a little magic). Every Nano includes an exclusive access code that allows you to track your Nano collection, play games, and learn about real science! Batteries are included. Colors may vary. Please note that Nano accessories including the Nano Habitat will be available from Fat Brain Toys in January 2010.

Servo motors are often used in robotics applications where they are usually smaller in size. The circuitry is typically built into the product you purchase and provides a beneficial amount of power. Usually a smaller engine will have a smaller motor. The torque of this motor is consistent with the overall motor size.

The output shaft is one of the main features of a servo motor. Because of this shaft, the motor can be positioned by a coded signal. The servo will remain in the same spot if you send the same signal. The servo motor's angle will change if there is a change in a signal.

There are plenty of uses for servos outside of the robotics industry. Usually, they are found in radio controlled airplanes. A servo motor has the ability to travel from zero to one hundred eighty degrees and has a wide radius. The motor is designed to consistently provide the right amount of power. There will be a greater use of engine power when traveling a larger distance.

The angle at which the servo motor turns is determined by the control wire. The control wire carries a pulse whose length determines the angle the servo motor changes. Pulses usually occur in twenty millisecond intervals. The servo motor will change its direction under ninety degrees with a shorter pulse, while a longer pulse will cause it to change more than ninety degrees.

We hope that this article on servo motors has supplied the background material that can help you in the near future in any of your upcoming purchases.

The 2007 Jeep Patriot was manufactured in Chrysler Group’s Belvidere Assembly Plant which was retooled in 2005 and ever since become the flagship for Chrysler Group’s adoption of flexible manufacturing. The plant enables for the fast production of vehicles making them available to the market quickly. The plant is capable of producing multiple products on one assembly line.

According to Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president for manufacturing, “We are seeing the results of our flexible manufacturing strategy, which we believe is a competitive advantage for the Chrysler Group. Thanks to Belvidere’s ability to build multiple models on one assembly line, we expect the production of three all-new models to cost significantly less than the initial investment we made in the plant to build the Dodge Caliber.”

The plant in Belvidere’s makes use of robotics instead of the dedicated tooling that was previously used. The Belvidere is also the first assembly plant of Chrysler to use body shop that is entirely robotics -- giving the assembly plant the ability to produce products from zero to 100 percent of each model. A fourth model can also be piloted at the same time which helps reduce the time needed to make new-model changeovers. Chrysler Group has invested an additional $419 million to provide their Belvidere plant the robotics technology.

There are many changes that the Chrysler Group is implementing especially in terms of its manufacturing process to accommodate the production of more models on one assembly line. The company has found new ways on how to make the required stamping dies resulting to as much as 60% savings on the die cost.

The inbound parts sequencing center was also upgraded. This is the part of the plant that manages more than 1,799 different parts that are used to assemble Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber. Aside from sequencing, this center also provides part metering, kitting and container management and delivers complete subassemblies in time to the manufacturing floor. The pre-assembled modules helps to reduce the number of components needed to assemble the Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliper thus improving quality, productivity as well as workers’ working conditions.

There is also a tunnel that connects the 500,000 square foot sequencing center to the Assembly plant that house the facility operated by TDS/US one of Chrysler Group’s largest minority-owner suppliers and represents the highest level of integration within Chrysler Group plant. The TDS/US organizes the parts placed them in kits to be worked on by individual work stations and delivered through the end of a connecting tunnel to transport to the manufacturing floor. The whole process maintain in-plant stocks at optimal levels and the same time minimizes delivery time and reduced costs at an estimated 12% a year compared to the previous process.

Due to the success of the workplace organizational model in the Belvidere assembly plant, Chrysler Group is going to implement the same organizational model throughout their manufacturing organization. This will ensure that quality is maintain all throughout the products of Chrysler Group so customers are assured that even if they are to get used Jeep auto parts the quality is there.

Integrated robotics is similar to other kinds of other industrial systems. The similarities are seen in the fact that robotics do depend on some compositions that make the entire system function. Each part should be carefully designed and planned so that the investment of the industry will not be put to waste.

Elements are otherwise known as the parts or compositions that make the system perform its task. Linking these compositions or elements together, the various industrial robots are created. In the creation of integrated robotics system, some factors are also being thought of. Look at all these facets of the system through the foregoing facts.

Parts in integrated robotic systems

Various robotic systems have varied elements. But all have common elements to consider in the assembly. Among a detailed list of basic elements are gears, bearings, clutches and springs. These components are put together to render the quality and efficiency promised by the system.

When industrial robotics is being thought of, computers are crucial in the functioning of the parts. Additional elements like arms and sensors also form part of the system. Attaching all these components together, the various phases of manufacturing are served.

Industrial robot kinds

There are four basic subclasses for integrated robotics. First is the programmable robot that functions with the presence of commands stored in a certain database. A variety to this is the second type of industrial robot regarded as the computer-programmable robot. Obviously, this one is controlled by a computer.

There are also servo and non-servo robots. Servos function with the use of arms and robotic manipulators and are important for functions such as picking up and placing down of materials. It also has the ability of transporting one object from a location to another. The non-servo robot functions in this same manner but do not rely upon manipulators and arms.

Integrated robotic system creation

Investment, performance and complexity of functions are factors that create the integrated robotic system. These three factors make up the main goal of the system

Mechanical engineering department offer programs in the fields of Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering Design and Energy and Environmental Technology.

In the mechanical engineering the major divisions are designs and controls, thermo-science and fluids, engineering mechanics and manufacturing. There are so many mechanical engineering programs in many colleges and universities just like mechatronics, robotics, transport and logistics, cryogenics, and biomechanics.

Mechanical design and analysis processes in mechanical engineering
are aided by various computational tools such as finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). In mechanical engineering design and controls, a mechanical engineer may apply CAD/CAM systems to feed "instructions" to computer numerically-controlled (CNC) machines like robots, milling machines, and lathes. In this way the engineer could automate the manufacturing process without the need for intermediate drawings. In this department mechanical engineer working in thermo-fluid might design a heat sink, an air conditioning system, or an internal combustion engine. Other processes might focus on the fluid itself, like a fan to cool an electrical system, a turbine to power a submarine, or a spray gun to apply chemical coatings.

In this part most mechanical engineering programs offer the major various subjects of study. Fundamental subjects of mechanical engineering include: statics, dynamics, strength of materials, solid mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, refrigeration and air conditioning, kinematics (including robotics), manufacturing technology, mechatronics and control theory. In mechanical engineering system mechanical engineers are also expected to understand and capable to apply concepts from chemistry and electrical engineering.

Mechanical engineering design is a part of the overall domain of mechanical engineering. The advent of mechanical engineering and the intrusion of equipment have largely redefined human lifestyles. Mechanized equipment, from tractors and cultivators to a wide variety of industrial machinery, had effected an explosion in agricultural productivity during the early 20th century. Hence mechanical engineering evolved at an ever accelerating rate over the century.

It seems that Japanese automakers are not only competing in terms of vehicle models but are also rivals in the field of robotics. If Honda (producer of high quality Acura CL brake booster) has the ASIMO, Toyota has come up with a robot that can play the “Pomp and Circumstance” on the violin.

Toyota has introduced its musically inclined 5-foot-tall-all-white robot last Thursday. The robot’s mechanical fingers are precisely programmed to press the right strings while its other arm was used for bowing. The movements were perfectly coordinated allowing the robot to effortlessly play the violin.

This robot-playing-violin is not the first of its kind, Toyota has previously shown robots that can play the trumpets and roll around working as guides. According to Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe robotics will be an important part of the company in the coming years. Toyota will also create robots for used at hospitals, for its facilities and for other places where robotics may be applied. The automaker is also hoping to put what it calls as partner robots to real use by 2010.

Mr. Watanabe has told reporters at the Toyota showroom in Tokyo, "We want to create robots that are useful for people in everyday life." He further stated that it is not that surprising for the company to venture into robotics since it’s a natural extension of the automaker’s robots used in manufacturing and in the development of auto-related technology such as the use of artificial intelligence for the sensors and pre-crash safety systems.

Toyota has also given a glimpse of what the future holds in terms of new technology like the wheelchair like “mobility robots” that are designed to offer “bed-to-bed” services to people especially the elderly and the sick. Actually the concept used for this technology was derived from cars that take people “door-to-door”.

If you are to compare Toyota with the other automakers that are involved in robotics as mentioned Honda with its ASIMO, Hitachi Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd., and NEC Corp.--Japan’s biggest seller of automobiles is a late bloomer. Just take Honda for instance which has started working on robots since 1986 believing that such technology would play an important role in delivering mobility in the future. Its ASIMO robot an acronym for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility or simply “legs” in Japanese was first offered in the year 2000 for rental. It is also one of the most advanced humanoids in the world considering the fact that it can do primary body function such as walk, jog, wave, evade obstacles, and can even carry on simple conversations.

The ASIMO also looks like a real-life child dressed in a white space-suit. This remarkable advancement made on the ASIMO is what Toyota would like to surpass and to achieve this goal the company is working with universities to speed up research and development on robotics.

In addition to robots, Toyota is still continuing its research on biofuels while Honda is expanding its other business such as its jet and motorcycle units.

Toronto, Canada- Those of us who aren’t privy to weapons development secrets might be shocked to learn how advancements in robotics are changing the shape of the United States Armed Forces—and other armies around the world. More than 6,000 robots are already used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Astronomical amounts of money are being funneled into artificial intelligence research. While that can ultimately lead to less human risk for U.S. troops on the battlefield, can the threat of armed robots be used against us by terrorists?

Howard S. Smith, author of the new book “I, robot” (Robot Binaries & Press www.robotpress.net) is an MIT-trained engineer and artificial intelligence expert. His techno thriller is a modern update to the original “I, Robot” book written in the 1940’s. Smith says while robotics can have innocuous applications, such as the supermarket self-checkout machines he helped create, the bulk of funding for artificial intelligence research is not directed towards consumers. Instead, the focus is on developing new weapons and tools for the military.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars are going into military applications, with virtually no money for consumer applications,” says Smith. “The idea of a robot walking your dog or washing your windows might be appealing but it’s still far-fetched. However, a robotic Army is not. And, don’t expect those Hollywood-created versions of robotic soldiers. The robots you’ve seen in movies aren’t necessarily what the military’s creating.”

The military currently uses Predator aircraft drones and bomb-defusing robots; both of which have undoubtedly saved countless lives of U.S. troops. While definite improvements over military weapons of yesteryear, these robots still require a human at the controls. But the latest advancements in military robotics and artificial intelligence are aimed at cutting out the middleman, i.e. removing the human factor from the decision making. That’s right; the military is creating weapons that will ultimately ‘decide’ whether to fire weapons. And that dramatically raises the stakes for the military and for civilians.

“These robots can take the place of troops in dangerous missions,” says Smith. “In that sense, they are an appealing tool. But you have to look at the drawbacks. How do you equip a robot with a conscience? Can we be certain that robots can distinguish between an armed enemy and a curious child? These are serious questions that must be addressed before these autonomous robots become standard gear for the military.”

The U.S. is not alone in its quest for robotic weapons. Other nations, such as China, Israel and Russia are reportedly developing unmanned military robotics. This high-tech arms race has many AI experts wondering if any international agreement will be created to draft a code of ethics for use of robotic weapons.

“As we become more accustomed to these robots, we will ultimately give them more control,” says Smith. “Our leaders must make smart, ethical decisions about these ‘thinking’ weapons. We grew up watching The Jetsons and when their futuristic world of incredible inventions never materialized we chalked it all up to fantasy.
Well, we may not have George Jetson’s flying car but we definitely have robots. They are here now, on the battlefield, and these machines will change our world.”

The company eventually sold the self-checkout robotics to Fujitsu and NCR, purchased other companies and changed its name to Optimal Group. Smith currently offers consulting services in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence through Robot Binaries & Press Corp. www.robotpress.net

A robot is a autonomous device which performs automated tasks, either according to direct human control, partial control with human supervision, or completely autonomously. Robots are typically used to do tasks that are too dull, dirty, or dangerous for humans. Industrial robots used in manufacturing lines used to be the most common form of robots, but that has recently been replaced by consumer robots cleaning floors and mowing lawns. Other applications include toxic waste cleanup, underwater and space exploration, surgery, mining, search and rescue, and mine finding. Robots are also finding their way into entertainment and home health care.

Overview

The word robot comes from the Czech word robota meaning "drudgery", "servitude", or "forced labor". A robot can be defined as a man-made entity with an intelligent connection between perception and action. A robot may include a feedback-driven connection between sense and action, not under direct human control. The action may take the form of electro-magnetic motors or effectors that move an arm, open and close grippers, or propel the robot. Two basic ways of using effectors are to move the robot around or to move other objects around. This distinction divides robotics into two mostly separate categories: mobile robotics and manipulator robotics. The step by step control and feedback is provided by a computer program run on either an external or embedded computer or a microcontroller.

Alternately, robot has been used as the general term for a mechanical man, or an automaton resembling an animal, either real or imaginary. It has come to be applied to many machines which directly replace a human or animal in work or play. In this way, a robot can be seen as a form of biomimicry. Anthropomorphism is perhaps what makes us reluctant to refer to the highly complex modern washer-dryer as a robot. However, in modern understanding, the term implies a degree of independence that would exclude many automatic machine tools from being called robots. It is the search for ever more highly autonomous robots which is the major focus of robotics research and which drives much work in artificial intelligence.

Though we tend to think of robots as extremely complicated, thanks typically to their anthropomorphic physical design and our excess of indoctrination to the "Danger, Will Robinson!" robots of 1960s television, the fundamental elements are very simple. Motion is achieved by motors controlled by digital circuits that incorporate a key power semiconductor switching element called a thyristor or silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR). The robot turns when only one of two parallel motors is actuated: for example, stopping the left motor while running the right motor causes the dummy to turn left. Digital signals fed to the motor control circuitry determine which motors move at which times.

The problem can range from very simple (e.g., turning left or right) to very complex (e.g., controlling an elbow and wrist to move an item from a conveyor belt to a shelf). The signals can be sent by an outside element (e.g., a human operator) or by internal circuitry that makes "decisions" based upon observations of the robot's environment and may alter these decisions based upon whether the motion is proceeding acceptably (see feedback).

Underlying simplicities not withstanding, combinations of various computer systems and electromechanical subsystems can produce the appearance of profound sophistication, e.g., a "chess-playing robot" that really should be viewed as two discreet systems Chess-playing software that has nothing to do with robotics; A Robot that interacts with the chess board.
