Intermediate Robot Building This book provides far more detail on the hardware aspects of robot building than any other I have seen to date and is worth picking up.

— Steven Rainwater, Reviewer, Robots. This book is highly recommended as the explanations are clear, and the explanations are useful.

— Colin McGregor, The Canadian Linux Users' Exchange

For readers of Robot Building for Beginners (Apress, 2002), welcome to the next level! Intermediate Robot Building offers the kind of real-world knowledge that only an experienced robot builder can offer&emdash;the kind of knowledge beginners usually have to learn through mistakes. In this book, you'll learn the value of a robot heartbeat and the purpose of the wavy lines in photocells. You'll find out what electronic part you should sand. You'll discover how a well-placed switch can help a robot avoid obstacles better than a pair of feelers. And you'll avoid mistakes that can cause a capacitor to explode.

Want a robot that can explore rooms, follow lines, or battle opponents in mini-sumo? This book presents step-by-step instructions and circuit and part descriptions so that you can build the robot featured in the book or apply the modules to your own robot designs.

Finally, you'll find the complete schematics for Roundabout, a room explorer that requires no programming and uses only off-the-shelf electronics. With Roundabout, you'll use many of the same techniques used by professional robotics engineers&emdash;and you'll experience many of the same challenges and joys they feel when a robot "comes to life."

I, Robot (The Robot) The three laws of Robotics:
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
2) A robot must obey orders givein to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I, Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future--a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete.

Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world--all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov's trademark.

Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century A military expert reveals how science fiction is fast becoming reality on the battlefield, changing not just how wars are fought, but also the politics, economics, laws, and ethics that surround war itself

P. W. Singer’s previous two books foretold the rise of private military contractors and the advent of child soldiers— predictions that proved all too accurate. Now, he explores the greatest revolution in military affairs since the atom bomb—the advent of robotic warfare.

We are just beginning to see a massive shift in military technology that threatens to make the stuff of I,Robot and the Terminator all too real. More than seven- thousand robotic systems are now in Iraq. Pilots in Nevada are remotely killing terrorists in Afghanistan. Scientists are debating just how smart—and how lethal—to make their current robotic prototypes. And many of the most renowned science fiction authors are secretly consulting for the Pentagon on the next generation.

Blending historic evidence with interviews from the field, Singer vividly shows that as these technologies multiply, they will have profound effects on the front lines as well as on the politics back home. Moving humans off the battlefield makes wars easier to start, but more complex to fight. Replacing men with machines may save some lives, but will lower the morale and psychological barriers to killing. The “warrior ethos,” which has long defined soldiers’ identity, will erode, as will the laws of war that have governed military conflict for generations.

Paradoxically, these new technologies will also bring war to our doorstep. As other nations and even terrorist organizations start to build or buy their own robotic weapons, the robot revolution could undermine America’s military preeminence. While his analysis is unnerving, there’s an irresistible gee-whiz quality to the innovations Singer uncovers. Wired for War travels from Iraq to see these robots in combat to the latter-day “skunk works” in America’s suburbia, where tomorrow’s technologies of war are quietly being designed. In Singer’s hands, the future of war is as fascinating as it is frightening.

An Introduction to AI Robotics (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents) This text covers all the material needed to understand the principles behind the AI approach to robotics and to program an artificially intelligent robot for applications involving sensing, navigation, planning, and uncertainty. Robin Murphy is extremely effective at combining theoretical and practical rigor with a light narrative touch. In the overview, for example, she touches upon anthropomorphic robots from classic films and science fiction stories before delving into the nuts and bolts of organizing intelligence in robots. Following the overview, Murphy contrasts AI and engineering approaches and discusses what she calls the three paradigms of AI robotics: hierarchical, reactive, and hybrid deliberative/reactive. Later chapters explore multiagent scenarios, navigation and path-planning for mobile robots, and the basics of computer vision and range sensing. Each chapter includes objectives, review questions, and exercises. Many chapters contain one or more case studies showing how the concepts were implemented on real robots. Murphy, who is well known for her classroom teaching, conveys the intellectual adventure of mastering complex theoretical and technical material. An Instructor's Manual including slides, solutions, sample tests, and programming assignments is available to qualified professors who are considering using the book or who are using the book for class use.

God in the Machine: What Robots Teach Us About Humanity and God A provocative look at the theological implications of artificial intelligence from the founder of MIT’s God and Computers Project

Get ready to meet two remarkable characters, Cog and Kismet. They both enjoy working with others, they’re very attentive, have excellent learning skills, and, according to their colleagues, they’re very charming. And they’re both robots.

From Hollywood to the halls of NASA, robots loom large in the popular imagination. But what feelings do these lifelike machines really provoke in us? In God in the Machine, Dr. Anne Foerst draws on her expertise as both a theologian and computer scientist to address the profound questions that robots such as Cog and Kismet raise for us all: How do we define "human" versus "person"? What does it mean to have a soul? And what do robots teach us about our relationship with God?

The History of Toys: From Spinning Tops to Robots
This appealing and well-illustrated book traces the history of toys through the ages. It reflects changing attitudes to childhood as well as the influences of technology and the invention of new materials. Remarkably, some toys have changed very little despite a change in materials: rattles once made of straw, clay, silver, leather and wood are now made of plastic. Greek, Egyptian and Roman children played with dolls, miniature houses, balls, spinning tops and pull-along animals on wheels. Kites have been flown in China for centuries. Dolls were either made from wood, fabric, leather or porcelain - or, for poor children, were just a chalk face on an old shoe wrapped in material - before the advent of fine sculpting by toymakers, Kathe Cruse or Sasha Morgenthaler. Deborah Jaffe explores the various influences on toys from politics and marketing to religion and education. She takes us on a fascinating exploration of toys through the ages.

Robots: Spaceships and Other Tin Toys (French and German Edition) Tin toy mania! Now that computer games have come to stay, tin toys have become obsolete for today's children. For those of us who remember them from times past, these tin toys can transport us back to our childhoods; they call up a vision of a time we thought we had already forgotten. They also bear witness to history; they have survived wars and crises, and tell us something of the fashions, colors and tendencies of their times.

This book will be of special interest to anyone fascinated by early space travel and technology, those who simply want to wax nostalgic about a bygone era of their youth, and of course to collectors and fans of 50s and 60s tin toys. The roots of today's toys can be seen in these precursors, notably in the early transformer robots. Taken from collector Teruhisa Kitahara's vast collection, which is on display in many museums in Japan, the tin toys featured here are quite rare and give a wonderful overview of this era in the history of toys. A must for any toy lover!

Servo motors are often used in robotics applications where they are usually smaller in size. The circuitry is typically built into the product you purchase and provides a beneficial amount of power. Usually a smaller engine will have a smaller motor. The torque of this motor is consistent with the overall motor size.

The output shaft is one of the main features of a servo motor. Because of this shaft, the motor can be positioned by a coded signal. The servo will remain in the same spot if you send the same signal. The servo motor's angle will change if there is a change in a signal.

There are plenty of uses for servos outside of the robotics industry. Usually, they are found in radio controlled airplanes. A servo motor has the ability to travel from zero to one hundred eighty degrees and has a wide radius. The motor is designed to consistently provide the right amount of power. There will be a greater use of engine power when traveling a larger distance.

The angle at which the servo motor turns is determined by the control wire. The control wire carries a pulse whose length determines the angle the servo motor changes. Pulses usually occur in twenty millisecond intervals. The servo motor will change its direction under ninety degrees with a shorter pulse, while a longer pulse will cause it to change more than ninety degrees.

We hope that this article on servo motors has supplied the background material that can help you in the near future in any of your upcoming purchases.

In California: Honda, the world’s creator of the first ever ASIMO robot has one again made another breakthrough with their humanoid creation. Honda’s latest ASIMO was presented at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The new ASIMO has been upgraded and was given a streamlined of new design. Honda’s ASIMO is now more agile and is capable of quick movements – such as running nearly 4mph. Aside from the ability to run, the humanoid robot was also provided with artificial intelligence capabilities to further enhance human interaction.

Jeffrey Smith, American Honda Assistant Vice President was the one tasked of presenting the ASIMO during its North American Debut at the CES. And here is what he has to say about the ASIMO:

“For the first time in North America, we’re demonstrating this newest iteration of Honda’s remarkable humanoid robotics technology. ASIMO now has a revolutionary ability to run and maneuver at unprecedented speeds… Honda continues to further the development of humanoid robotics technology, believing that one day ASIMO will be a helper to people in need.”

“The new ASIMO can much better interact with and carry out commands given by people and can more effectively perform numerous new tasks including moving carts and carrying objects. The primary advancements of the newest ASIMO include:
Enhanced human Interaction- By providing ASIMO with the ability to recognize the surrounding environment through its visual sensors, floor surface sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and by an IC Tele-interaction Communication Card1, ASIMO can more autonomously interact with people. Through the coordinated use of its eye cameras in the head and the force (kinesthetic) sensors on its wrists, ASIMO can give and receive an object such as a tray. And by using these force sensors, ASIMO can hold the hand of the person and move in sync with them.
Carrying objects using a cart- ASIMO is now capable of handling a cart freely while maintaining an appropriate distance from the cart by adjusting the force of its right and left arms to push a cart using the force sensors on its wrists. Even when the movement of the cart is disturbed, ASIMO can continue maneuvering by taking flexible actions such as slowing down or changing directions.
Running- Through proactive control of ASIMO’s posture while both feet are off the ground, ASIMO can run at nearly 4 mph. In addition, running in a circular pattern at a high speed was achieved by tilting the center of gravity of ASIMO’s body inside of the circle to maintain balance with the amount of centrifugal force experienced.

The main objective of Honda in pursuing the development of the ASIMO robot is to one day create a robot that would have ability to assist those whose mobility are restricted and to replace those who are working in environments that are harmful to humans.

Facts on Honda
Honda is one of the leading producers in the world of various types of mobility products such as automobiles, motorcycles and ATVs, power products; top-of-the-line auto parts products like Civic tie rod end, marine engines, personal watercraft, and light jet. The 2007 Jeep Patriot was manufactured in Chrysler Group’s Belvidere Assembly Plant which was retooled in 2005 and ever since become the flagship for Chrysler Group’s adoption of flexible manufacturing. The plant enables for the fast production of vehicles making them available to the market quickly. The plant is capable of producing multiple products on one assembly line.

According to Frank Ewasyshyn, executive vice president for manufacturing, “We are seeing the results of our flexible manufacturing strategy, which we believe is a competitive advantage for the Chrysler Group. Thanks to Belvidere’s ability to build multiple models on one assembly line, we expect the production of three all-new models to cost significantly less than the initial investment we made in the plant to build the Dodge Caliber.”

The plant in Belvidere’s makes use of robotics instead of the dedicated tooling that was previously used. The Belvidere is also the first assembly plant of Chrysler to use body shop that is entirely robotics -- giving the assembly plant the ability to produce products from zero to 100 percent of each model. A fourth model can also be piloted at the same time which helps reduce the time needed to make new-model changeovers. Chrysler Group has invested an additional $419 million to provide their Belvidere plant the robotics technology.

There are many changes that the Chrysler Group is implementing especially in terms of its manufacturing process to accommodate the production of more models on one assembly line. The company has found new ways on how to make the required stamping dies resulting to as much as 60% savings on the die cost.

The inbound parts sequencing center was also upgraded. This is the part of the plant that manages more than 1,799 different parts that are used to assemble Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber. Aside from sequencing, this center also provides part metering, kitting and container management and delivers complete subassemblies in time to the manufacturing floor. The pre-assembled modules helps to reduce the number of components needed to assemble the Jeep Patriot, Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliper thus improving quality, productivity as well as workers’ working conditions.

There is also a tunnel that connects the 500,000 square foot sequencing center to the Assembly plant that house the facility operated by TDS/US one of Chrysler Group’s largest minority-owner suppliers and represents the highest level of integration within Chrysler Group plant. The TDS/US organizes the parts placed them in kits to be worked on by individual work stations and delivered through the end of a connecting tunnel to transport to the manufacturing floor. The whole process maintain in-plant stocks at optimal levels and the same time minimizes delivery time and reduced costs at an estimated 12% a year compared to the previous process.

Due to the success of the workplace organizational model in the Belvidere assembly plant, Chrysler Group is going to implement the same organizational model throughout their manufacturing organization. This will ensure that quality is maintain all throughout the products of Chrysler Group so customers are assured that even if they are to get used Jeep auto parts the quality is there.

Toronto, Canada- Those of us who aren’t privy to weapons development secrets might be shocked to learn how advancements in robotics are changing the shape of the United States Armed Forces—and other armies around the world. More than 6,000 robots are already used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Astronomical amounts of money are being funneled into artificial intelligence research. While that can ultimately lead to less human risk for U.S. troops on the battlefield, can the threat of armed robots be used against us by terrorists?

Howard S. Smith, author of the new book “I, robot” (Robot Binaries & Press www.robotpress.net) is an MIT-trained engineer and artificial intelligence expert. His techno thriller is a modern update to the original “I, Robot” book written in the 1940’s. Smith says while robotics can have innocuous applications, such as the supermarket self-checkout machines he helped create, the bulk of funding for artificial intelligence research is not directed towards consumers. Instead, the focus is on developing new weapons and tools for the military.

“Hundreds of billions of dollars are going into military applications, with virtually no money for consumer applications,” says Smith. “The idea of a robot walking your dog or washing your windows might be appealing but it’s still far-fetched. However, a robotic Army is not. And, don’t expect those Hollywood-created versions of robotic soldiers. The robots you’ve seen in movies aren’t necessarily what the military’s creating.”

The military currently uses Predator aircraft drones and bomb-defusing robots; both of which have undoubtedly saved countless lives of U.S. troops. While definite improvements over military weapons of yesteryear, these robots still require a human at the controls. But the latest advancements in military robotics and artificial intelligence are aimed at cutting out the middleman, i.e. removing the human factor from the decision making. That’s right; the military is creating weapons that will ultimately ‘decide’ whether to fire weapons. And that dramatically raises the stakes for the military and for civilians.

“These robots can take the place of troops in dangerous missions,” says Smith. “In that sense, they are an appealing tool. But you have to look at the drawbacks. How do you equip a robot with a conscience? Can we be certain that robots can distinguish between an armed enemy and a curious child? These are serious questions that must be addressed before these autonomous robots become standard gear for the military.”

The U.S. is not alone in its quest for robotic weapons. Other nations, such as China, Israel and Russia are reportedly developing unmanned military robotics. This high-tech arms race has many AI experts wondering if any international agreement will be created to draft a code of ethics for use of robotic weapons.

“As we become more accustomed to these robots, we will ultimately give them more control,” says Smith. “Our leaders must make smart, ethical decisions about these ‘thinking’ weapons. We grew up watching The Jetsons and when their futuristic world of incredible inventions never materialized we chalked it all up to fantasy.
Well, we may not have George Jetson’s flying car but we definitely have robots. They are here now, on the battlefield, and these machines will change our world.”

Howard S. Smith has a degree in Biomedical engineering from MIT. He was the founder and president of Optimal Robotics, which patented, designed, built, and installed the supermarket self-checkout machines, which were originally called “service robots.” He left the company before it went public on NASDAQ in 1996. The company eventually sold the self-checkout robotics to Fujitsu and NCR, purchased other companies and changed its name to Optimal Group. Smith currently offers consulting services in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence through Robot Binaries & Press Corp. www.robotpress.net

It seems that Japanese automakers are not only competing in terms of vehicle models but are also rivals in the field of robotics. If Honda (producer of high quality Acura CL brake booster) has the ASIMO, Toyota has come up with a robot that can play the “Pomp and Circumstance” on the violin.

Toyota has introduced its musically inclined 5-foot-tall-all-white robot last Thursday. The robot’s mechanical fingers are precisely programmed to press the right strings while its other arm was used for bowing. The movements were perfectly coordinated allowing the robot to effortlessly play the violin.

This robot-playing-violin is not the first of its kind, Toyota has previously shown robots that can play the trumpets and roll around working as guides. According to Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe robotics will be an important part of the company in the coming years. Toyota will also create robots for used at hospitals, for its facilities and for other places where robotics may be applied. The automaker is also hoping to put what it calls as partner robots to real use by 2010.

Mr. Watanabe has told reporters at the Toyota showroom in Tokyo, "We want to create robots that are useful for people in everyday life." He further stated that it is not that surprising for the company to venture into robotics since it’s a natural extension of the automaker’s robots used in manufacturing and in the development of auto-related technology such as the use of artificial intelligence for the sensors and pre-crash safety systems.

Toyota has also given a glimpse of what the future holds in terms of new technology like the wheelchair like “mobility robots” that are designed to offer “bed-to-bed” services to people especially the elderly and the sick. Actually the concept used for this technology was derived from cars that take people “door-to-door”.

If you are to compare Toyota with the other automakers that are involved in robotics as mentioned Honda with its ASIMO, Hitachi Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd., and NEC Corp.--Japan’s biggest seller of automobiles is a late bloomer. Just take Honda for instance which has started working on robots since 1986 believing that such technology would play an important role in delivering mobility in the future. Its ASIMO robot an acronym for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility or simply “legs” in Japanese was first offered in the year 2000 for rental. It is also one of the most advanced humanoids in the world considering the fact that it can do primary body function such as walk, jog, wave, evade obstacles, and can even carry on simple conversations.

The ASIMO also looks like a real-life child dressed in a white space-suit. This remarkable advancement made on the ASIMO is what Toyota would like to surpass and to achieve this goal the company is working with universities to speed up research and development on robotics.

In addition to robots, Toyota is still continuing its research on biofuels while Honda is expanding its other business such as its jet and motorcycle units.
