Uganda's Katakiro in England (Exploring Travel)
In 1902, Sir Apolo Kagwa, the chief Minister and Principle Regent of the Kingdom of Buganda, and his secretary, Ham Mukasa, arrived in Britain for the coronation of King Edward VII. This book, first published in 1904, is the remarkable record of the journey made by these two men into the heart of empire. It provides a view not only of the nature of the colonial relationship as it appeared to colonized subjects, but it also raises intriguing questions about the role of indigenous elites in the making of colonial culture. It also questions the function of the travel narrative in the constitution of the relationship between the metropolitan center and the colonial margin. The age of imperialism has come to be known as the great age of travel and much has been written about how British writers, administrators, and adventurers travelled to colonial outposts in order to define their relationship to their country and their cultures. However, little attention has been paid to the select number of colonial subjects who made journeys to Britain. This edition has a new introduction which provides a historical and theoretical context for understanding Buganda in the culture of colonialism. The notes help contemporary readers obtain a sense of the questions that concerned the African travellers as they made their way through Britain.

Sudan & Uganda: A travel diary You have here the journal that I, an American, wrote while traveling in Africa with my Norwegian wife. Neither of us had been on the continent before.

We visited Uganda, in a sort of ‘tourist heaven’ safari, using the TUSC – one of the top companies. We had a fabulous time, and you can read all about it: savanna wildlife in the Semliki Valley, chimpanzees and tons more in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, and mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, close to the Congo.

Then we shifted gears a lot – traveling to the Sudan, Uganda’s neighbor to the north. Sudan is by no means thought of as a tourist magnet! But it was not at all ‘tourist hell’ – we visited the large, extended family, in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan, of our Sudanese friends Elnour and Awadiya; and we were treated so very well that I would also call it ‘heaven’ here—just a very different flavor from that of Uganda!

The journal is personal, but (I trust) not too much so. I have truly enjoyed remembering the many rich experiences we had during those four weeks, and hope that you will enjoy reading about them.

Africa: Unplugged As an associate editor of Getaway magazine, Robyn Keene-Young landed a dream assignment: a journey through six distinctive African ecosystems to document each environment and its inhabitants. She began where many first time visitors to Africa begin, in a safari vehicle in the grasslands of the Serengeti. But she knew almost immediately that this was not the way to see the rest of this extraordinary continent. She needed to get out of the car and stretch her legs, to feel the earth underfoot and the sun on her back, to pack Band-Aids and anti-inflammatories and experience the African wilderness unplugged, in 3D.

And so, Africa: Unplugged chronicles Keene-Young’s adventures on the continent under her own steam. Written in her inimitable, honest – often humorous, always insightful – style, Keene-Young traipses Uganda’s Bwindi rainforest in search of gorillas; snorkels Botswana’s Okavango Delta and canoes Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River at the mercy of hippos and crocodiles. She gets on her belly with the beetles and lizards of Namibia’s Namib Desert, before hiking up Cape Town’s famous Table Mountain to bend down and smell the fynbos.

Each chapter showcases both the delights and trials of her travels to her destination, as well as her sojourn in each unique ecosystem. The pages of Africa: Unplugged are a journey like no other.

Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and Joseph Kony: American Efforts to Counter the LRA in Central Africa, Uganda, Central African Republic (CAR), Congo, and South Sudan As America commits military personnel to Central Africa, learn about the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), led by Joseph Kony. In announcing the deployment of U.S. military troops, President Obama stated: "For more than two decades, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has murdered, raped, and kidnapped tens of thousands of men, women, and children in central Africa. The LRA continues to commit atrocities across the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan that have a disproportionate impact on regional security. Since 2008, the United States has supported regional military efforts to pursue the LRA and protect local communities. Even with some limited U.S. assistance, however, regional military efforts have thus far been unsuccessful in removing LRA leader Joseph Kony or his top commanders from the battlefield. In the Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009, Public Law 111 172, enacted May 24, 2010, the Congress also expressed support for increased, comprehensive U.S. efforts to help mitigate and eliminate the threat posed by the LRA to civilians and regional stability."

This essential compilation of government and military reports and papers, totaling over 700 pages, provides analysis and background data on the LRA and related issues includes extensive background information on Uganda, the Central African Republic (CAR), South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa). There is in-depth coverage of human rights and counterterrorism in those Central African countries, plus detailed information from the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). There is review of the history of U.S. military involvement in Africa, the expanding role of U.S. military assistance and security cooperation in Africa, and the use of U.S. Armed Forces in Africa from 1950 to 2008.

In May 2010, President Obama signed into law the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, which reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to support regional partners’ efforts to end the atrocities of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in central Africa. For more than two decades, the LRA has murdered, raped and kidnapped tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children. Since 2008 alone, the LRA has killed more than 2,400 people and abducted more than 3,400. The United Nations estimates that over 380,000 people are displaced across Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and South Sudan as a result of LRA activity. The United States’ comprehensive, multi-year strategy seeks to help mitigate and end the threat posed to civilians and regional stability by the LRA. The strategy outlined four strategic objectives for U.S. support: (1) the increased protection of civilians, (2) the apprehension or removal of Joseph Kony and senior LRA commanders from the battlefield, (3) the promotion of defections and support of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of remaining LRA fighters, and (4) the provision of continued humanitarian relief to affected communities. The United States’ decision to send a small group of military advisers to assist the forces that are countering the LRA forms part of our continuing effort to achieve these strategic objectives.
