In 2001, Dana Atkinson went on a three week safari through South Africa. Seven weeks after she returned to the States, she sold her house, car, and most of her belongings then departed again for Africa; this time for an undetermined amount of time. The fingers of Africa began to wrap tightly around her during her first visit in a grip Africa maintains on Dana still today, many years after she first set foot on Africa's soil. She has now traveled thirteen African countries, spending hundreds of nights on the continent. Finally, as she has been told countless times she should, she has written down her knowledge and advice about traveling Africa so that you too can go and have a safe and amazing journey to this great continent. "Traveling Africa" is a book that should be read in its entirety prior to reading the guide book on the specific location in Africa for which you choose to travel. The more prepared you are for your trip and the more you know about the options available for your expedition, the better the odds of booking an amazing journey without the minor or major headaches so many African travelers go through. This book is focused on woman traveling Africa, but will also benefit men heading to the continent and will help all choose the perfect safari especially suited to meet their needs, desires and tolerance levels. You will learn everything you need to know from what to pack – or not to pack – to how to calculate needed funds. John sidetracks from business one morning. A spur of the moment decision based on his personal ego sets up a ‘bad’ day – a buffalo hunting safari.Business and or ‘intelligence’ returns as he unexpectedly gives a ride to a Chinese operative visiting the country. Now three different sets of competitive ground rules emerge – the UK business; the Chinese invasion; the local Intelligence lady. Titled as ‘Marketing Manager, Africa,’ he travelled through some 20 out of the then 42 African countries selling his UK company products. Long before e-mails and cell phones appeared to second guess you; screw with your mind and your decision making. John typed only one report a month; made no long distance phone calls; made his own decisions; was in fact the company CEO for Africa. Africa in the 1960’s was a continent newly ‘Freed from Colonialism’. John was a white, British, expat. – “An old Colonial". How he survived, how he did business, how he lived, what he saw…how he was welcomed makes for a unique tale. Interestingly John opens each chapter with an opening comment about the business approach to the upcoming situation. 50 years ago versus today. Food for thought. Discover Tanzania. Includes FREE planning and background information. Step off the boat or plane onto Zanzibar, and you’ll be transported through the miles and the centuries – to the ancient kingdom of Persia, to the Oman of bygone days with its caliphs and sultans, to the west coast of India with its sensual rhythms and heavily laden scents. In Stone Town – the heart of the archipelago – narrow, cobbled alleyways wind past Arabic-style houses with brass-studded wooden doors. Elderly men in their kanzu (white robes) and kofia (caps) chat animatedly over cups of strong coffee while playing a seemingly never-ending game of bao (a board game). Nearby, veiled women in their flowing, black bui-bui (cover-alls) pause to share the latest gossip, while children chase balls through the streets. Along the coast, life goes on as it has for centuries, its pace set by the rhythm of the tides and the winds of the monsoon. Just across the deep waters of the Pemba channel lies hilly, verdant Pemba – the archipelago’s ‘other’ island, seldom visited and steeped in mystique. Dense mangrove swamps line its coast, opening occasionally onto stunning white-sand coves, and a patchwork of neat farm plots covers the hillsides. Tarangire National Park lies to the south of the large open grass plains of southern Maasailand and is the best-kept secret on the "northern safari circuit". This park has the largest population of Elephants anywhere in Tanzania. Baobab trees are one of the world's oldest and can survive up to 3000 years. Families of elephants play, graze & rest around the ancient trunks and strip Acacia bark from the thorn trees for their afternoon meal. Herds of Elephants scratch river beds for underground streams. It is estimated 2500 Elephant make Tarangire their home consisting of approximately 32 distinct family groups. A physically fit elephant can survive for 72 years. Tarangire National Park has the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem, second only to the crowded Ngorongoro Crater. During the dry season, the Tarangire River has shrivelled to a shadow of its wet season self, but it is choked with wildlife. Thirsty nomads have wandered hundreds of parched kilometers knowing that there is always water here. Predators rarely go hungry as their prey is attracted to the water as they lie in wait nearby. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. Highlights include game animals in addition to Cheetah stalking a herd of Impala, a pair of Lions on their "honeymoon", large herd of Cape Buffalo, Kikoti Lodge, a safari guide school & a virtual parade of Elephants. The East African country of Tanzania is located south of the Equator. Over 587,000 square miles in area, home of the continents' tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro and more national parks and game preserves than any other wildlife destination in the world. Enlightened game management, strict regulation on hunting coupled with an excellent infrastructure for tourism and guided by professional guide, Stanford Milinga, makes Tanzania a world-class destination for game viewing photo safaris.Director: Jim Watt, Kelly Watt Blu-ray: Blu-ray, Dolby, Widescreen, Surround Sound Company: Bennett-Watt Media (2011-03-29) List Price: $24.95 Amazon Price: $24.95
