Amazon.com Books: Sudan travel
Much has changed in Sudan since the first edition of this guidebook was published in 2005. Following the peace agreement that ended the civil war of 19832005, southern Sudan is newly accessible to adventurous travelers. Bradt’s Sudan continues to be the only guidebook dedicated to this emerging destination. This new edition offers full coverage of the southern towns of Juba, Malakal, Wau and Rumbek, and provides information on recently de-mined driving routes. It also details the increasing hotel and restaurant options in Khartoum, and Sudan’s developing wildlife tourism industry.

Emma McCune’s passion for Africa, her unstinting commitment to the children of Sudan, and her youthful beauty and glamour set her apart from other relief workers from the moment she arrived in southern Sudan. But no one was prepared for her decision to marry a local warlord—a man who seemed to embody everything she was working against—and to throw herself into his violent quest to take over southern Sudan’s rebel movement. With precision and insight, Deborah Scroggins—who met McCune in Sudan—charts the process by which McCune’s romantic delusions led to her descent into the hell of Africa’s longest-running civil war. Emma’s War is at once a disturbing love story and an up-close look at Sudan: a world where international aid fuels armies as well as the starving population, and where the northern-based Islamic government—backed by Osama bin Laden—is locked in a war with the Christian and pagan south over religion, oil, and slaves. A timely, revelatory account of the nature of relief work, of the men and women who choose to carry it out, and of one woman’s sacrifice to its ideals. What would happen if you took some of Britain's best writing talent, put them on a plane and flew them to one of the most extraordinary and inaccessible places on the planet? What would happen if you took Irvine Welsh from the streets of Edinburgh and showed him a remote, dangerous village in Africa? What would happen if you flew Alex Garland into one of the world's most hazardous war zones? And how would Tony Hawks react if you dragged him away from his tennis and asked him to write a song with a Sudanese tribesman? With Victoria Glendinning, Andrew O'Hagan, Giles Foden and WF Deedes, these writers have experienced for themselves one of the most beautiful and yet troubled lands in the world - The Sudan. This is the astonishing tale of Slatin Pasha (1857 - 1932), the Austrian soldier of fortune. Born near Vienna, the young Slatin had already fought in Bosnia when he was offered a high-ranking military post in the Sudan. This desert kingdom was ruled on behalf of the nearby Egyptian government by General Charles Gordon, the brilliant British soldier turned administrator. With a slim hold on power, Gordon was in need of strong, brave, linguistically talented, young men like Rudolf Slatin. If Slatin was looking for adventure as he rode his camel into Sudan's Darfur province in 1881 he got it in spades when one of the most spectacular wars of the 19th century broke out. Under the leadership of their leader known as the Mahdi, a vast native army arose to throw off their Egyptian overlords and cast out its foreign governors. Slatin was captured and enslaved. Gordon was surrounded at his capital in Khartoum and beheaded. After escaping from brutal slavery, Slatin was awarded military honours by Queen Victoria and returned to the Sudan to assist the very people who had held him in captivity.Author: Rudolph Slatin Paperback: 480 pages ISBN13: 9781590481394, Condition: New, Notes: BRAND NEW FROM PUBLISHER! 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Robert D. Kaplan is one of our leading international journalists, someone who can explain the most complicated and volatile regions and show why they’re relevant to our world. In Surrender or Starve, Kaplan illuminates the fault lines in the Horn of Africa, which is emerging as a crucial region for America’s ongoing war on terrorism. Reporting from Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea, Kaplan examines the factors behind the famine that ravaged the region in the 1980s, exploring the ethnic, religious, and class conflicts that are crucial for understanding the region today. He offers a new foreword and afterword that show how the nations have developed since the famine, and why this region will only grow more important to the United States. Wielding his trademark ability to blend on-the-ground reporting and cogent analysis, Robert D. Kaplan introduces us to a fascinating part of the world, one that it would behoove all of us to know more about. Author: Robert D. Mende Nazer’s shocking story of modern-day slavery – told in the global best-seller ‘Slave’ – touched the world. Later made into a film, it told the harrowing story of a girl from the Sudan taken into captivity, and then sold into slavery. Written by the award-winning journalist Damien Lewis, it exposed the brutality of the modern slave trade, and turned it into a major global issue. In this, enthralling, moving sequel Mende Nazer tells how in the summer of 2007 she embarked upon a journey back to her homeland in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. She left behind the relative security of London, her new home, to return to the war-ravaged land of her birth. But she would be risking everything she had fought for in an effort to make contact with the family she’d lost when she was taken into captivity. And over an epic, harrowing journey, Mende discovers what freedom really means. It is a story that will touch the hearts of millions. Slave received rave reviews: ‘A powerful memoir...shocking and very moving...her book is an eloquent testament to the ability of a brave soul to survive, and to the need to bring an end to slavery’ - Susan McKay, Sunday Tribune. ’All the cliches of such survival stories - 'life-affirming, heart-warming'- are inadequate to describe the emotional impact of [Mende's] eventual deliverance.’ – The Observer. ’Intensely moving’ - Waterstone’s Books Quarterly. ’An eloquent testament to the ability of a brave soul to survive, and to the need to bring an end to slavery’ - Sunday Tribune. Around thirty-five years have passed since this author first embarked on a long sojourn through Western Europe, the Middle East and East Africa. No one would consent to calling it a remarkable trip, nor one of great significance. No profound discoveries were made nor any major contributions that reshaped the land or any of its people. What it did provide was an interior as well as exterior examination of the young author as he sojourned about the world, what he felt about himself and how he perceived the world at the time of his encounters. What I am attempting to do in this new version is to add comments pertinent to any particular paragraph wherever it seemed appropriate to do so. Some of these comments were made many years ago, some are of more recent date. These latter I have placed in italics so as to separate them from the original notes this author made during his lengthy sojourn. In this way it can be seen why the impressions were made and whether any new comments would add any help to a future traveler reading this narrative. This of course is not meant to be a travel guide such as the many hundreds that can be found in many editions everywhere they are sold. Rather it is merely meant to convey an approach to travel itself for those who are more travel than tourist minded. Crossing a portion of the great Sahara desert in Egypt and Sudan by car with virtually no aid whatsoever is certainly a prime example of a travel adventure no tourist would ever dream of embarking upon. You have here the journal that I, an American, wrote while traveling in Africa with my Norwegian wife. Neither of us had been on the continent before. We visited Uganda, in a sort of ‘tourist heaven’ safari, using the TUSC – one of the top companies. We had a fabulous time, and you can read all about it: savanna wildlife in the Semliki Valley, chimpanzees and tons more in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, and mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, close to the Congo. Then we shifted gears a lot – traveling to the Sudan, Uganda’s neighbor to the north. Sudan is by no means thought of as a tourist magnet! But it was not at all ‘tourist hell’ – we visited the large, extended family, in the Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan, of our Sudanese friends Elnour and Awadiya; and we were treated so very well that I would also call it ‘heaven’ here—just a very different flavor from that of Uganda! The journal is personal, but (I trust) not too much so. I have truly enjoyed remembering the many rich experiences we had during those four weeks, and hope that you will enjoy reading about them. As America commits military personnel to Central Africa, learn about the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), led by Joseph Kony. In announcing the deployment of U.S. military troops, President Obama stated: "For more than two decades, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) has murdered, raped, and kidnapped tens of thousands of men, women, and children in central Africa. The LRA continues to commit atrocities across the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan that have a disproportionate impact on regional security. Since 2008, the United States has supported regional military efforts to pursue the LRA and protect local communities. Even with some limited U.S. assistance, however, regional military efforts have thus far been unsuccessful in removing LRA leader Joseph Kony or his top commanders from the battlefield. In the Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act of 2009, Public Law 111 172, enacted May 24, 2010, the Congress also expressed support for increased, comprehensive U.S. efforts to help mitigate and eliminate the threat posed by the LRA to civilians and regional stability."This essential compilation of government and military reports and papers, totaling over 700 pages, provides analysis and background data on the LRA and related issues includes extensive background information on Uganda, the Central African Republic (CAR), South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa). There is in-depth coverage of human rights and counterterrorism in those Central African countries, plus detailed information from the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). There is review of the history of U.S. military involvement in Africa, the expanding role of U.S. military assistance and security cooperation in Africa, and the use of U.S. Armed Forces in Africa from 1950 to 2008. In May 2010, President Obama signed into law the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, which reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to support regional partners’ efforts to end the atrocities of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in central Africa. For more than two decades, the LRA has murdered, raped and kidnapped tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children. Since 2008 alone, the LRA has killed more than 2,400 people and abducted more than 3,400. The United Nations estimates that over 380,000 people are displaced across Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and South Sudan as a result of LRA activity. The United States’ comprehensive, multi-year strategy seeks to help mitigate and end the threat posed to civilians and regional stability by the LRA. The strategy outlined four strategic objectives for U.S. support: (1) the increased protection of civilians, (2) the apprehension or removal of Joseph Kony and senior LRA commanders from the battlefield, (3) the promotion of defections and support of disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of remaining LRA fighters, and (4) the provision of continued humanitarian relief to affected communities. The United States’ decision to send a small group of military advisers to assist the forces that are countering the LRA forms part of our continuing effort to achieve these strategic objectives. Joe Brearley should have spent his war in the Far East but his ship's encounter with a German submarine as he was on route in 1942 diverted him to the Middle East. He was an Intelligence and Support Officer in the RAFVR. Away from Front Line duties and limited by wartime censorship he recorded in his Journals and Letters Home detailed descriptions of some of the places he was stationed, the people he served with or met along the way, the food, the weather and just about everything else. This book records his time in CAIRO, SUDAN and his overland journey to LIBYA and records how they appeared to him long before the 'Arab Spring' and the uprisings of today. There are descriptions of some of the amazing characters he met and observed along with many of the wonderful places he visited on his journeys by air, train, steamer and Air Force Truck. We never really knew what we'd signed up for when the whole family was invited to come and run a language school in Sudan...Some four years after coming back, Janet and her son, Chris, decided to sit down and write the story of their North African adventure, as a tribute to her late husband, Peter who, sadly, passed away in a Khartoum teaching hospital. As the memories came flooding back, it was clear that Sudan was a country both of them would recollect with fondness. Now, with the book finished, sit back and enjoy a truly unique story, full of interesting characters, hilarious anecdotes, incredible displays of human kindness and overcoming culture shock the like of which most people would never experience. Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan's metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi's army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient times, as well as today, the overwhelming heat saps the strength of both man and beast as the daytime temperature can reach a scorching fifty five degrees Celsius. At the foot of the mountain range that we must cross in order to travel deep into the homeland of the Hadendoa we meet a group of wood gatherers. In addition to the trading of camels and goats, the gathering and selling of wood is one of the main sources of income for this unique nomadic people. Without a sound several mounted Hadendoa warriors have approached us. The atmosphere is anything but relaxed and our uncertainty seems to please the warriors who, mounted on camels, are truly menacing. In the past the British army also experienced the wrath of these people. The looks on the faces of the Hadendoa further increases the tension. Finally, after what seems like several minutes, we tentatively step forward. In broken Arabic we try to explain to the warriors that we have journeyed far to meet them. Our initial scepticism is replaced by a long and amicable handshake with their leader that sets our fears to rest. Surrounded by the desert and the Red Sea Mountains and cut off from most of the influences of modern civilization, the legendary Hadendoa Tribe has somehow managed to maintain its unique cultural identity and freedom. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media.
