Amazon.com KindleStore: South Pacific Islands Travel
The South Pacific Islands of Vanuatu (Travel Adventures) Vanuatu, a cluster of 13 large islands and 80 small ones in the southwest Pacific, 1,300 miles east of Australia, has had a kaleidoscopic past. Formerly known as the New Hebrides, it was administered as a British-French Condominium, referred to as "pandemonium" and the events surrounding independence in 1980 had Gilbert and Sullivan qualities. Then there are the languages they speak: French, English, 105 indigenous tongues, and the wonderful common language, Bislama. The islands of Vanuatu, formerly called the New Hebrides, stretch in a north-south direction for 500 miles, and have a land mass of 6,500 square miles. Some of the small islands are coral atolls, the larger ones are volcanic in origin, and the terrain ranges from forest-covered mountains to grassy uplands to tiny reef-enclosed islets. Port Vila on Efate has a population of 15,000 and it's here most of the foreigners live and most of the holiday activities happen. Port Vila may be the prettiest capital town in the South Pacific and there are many things to do, other than sitting quietly on the sea front watching the blue bay roil up from schools of mullet. Food, as we've discussed, is one of Vila's most obvious attractions. Simple strolling in this compact bougainvillia- and frangipani-garlanded town is another. Away from Port Vila conditions change rapidly and, other than two or three resorts at a distance from town, the island reverts to elemental Melanesian life style. Next in importance after Port Vila is the town of Luganville, called Santo, a town of 5,500 on the south coast of the biggest island in the group, Espiritu Santo. In distant regions women still wear fiber mats or grass skirts, some of the men like the Big Nambas wear penis sheaths, which polite Victorian explorers had great difficulty describing and contented themselves with mentioning the women's skirts. Some Malekula men still pierce their nasal septa and insert pieces of wood or bone. Thev encourage the tusks of hogs to grow in a full circle, unpleasant for the pig. And they communicate with the ghosts of ancestors by drinking kava. The island of Tanna has a population of over 20,000 and most of them still live their lives according to custom. They still practice circumcision rites, the ceremonial killing of pigs, primitive marriage ceremonies, dancing with painted faces, and the drinking of kava. The author takes you from island to island, illuminating the local culture on each one. Details are here on the places to stay, the things you must see, how to get around and how to make your trip to these islands unforgettable.

Guam & the Marianas Islands (Travel Adventures) Guam is a special place for a number of reasons. At 212 square miles, it's the largest island in Micronesia, and its status as a territory of the U.S. makes it our most westerly possession. It is 6,000 miles west of San Francisco, and is truly where America's day begins. The geology of this apostrophe-shaped island, which is 30 miles long and four to twelve miles wide, is volcanic. Much of the north ern part has cliffs along the coast that drop sharply to the sea, as well as a few mountains that range up to 600 feet. The southern part of the island is basically volcanic (rather than limestone) and has a mountainous ridge separating island valleys from the coastline. Mt. Lamlam, 1,400 feet above sea level, is the highest point on the island and, with its base 37,000 feet below the sea, it can in fact be considered the world's highest mountain. Guam is a lush green island that supports a variety of plants, but only enough agriculture to provide a few local markets with pineap ples, bananas, papayas, mangos, beans, squash, and cucumbers. Agana, located about midway on the west coast, is the capital and, with its shopping centers, office buildings, parks, and some times heavy commuter traffic, could be "Any Town, U.S.A." Tumon Bay, 10 minutes by car from Agana, is Guam's answer to Waikiki, and on its arc of palm-fringed beach you will find one deluxe hotel after another. This guide tells you everything you need to know about this amazing island - where to stay and where to eat, what to see, what to do, how to get there and get around. With maps and color photos throughout.

The South Pacific - the Sea of Dreams:Sailing Panama-Galapagos-French Polynesia - Tonga - Fiji - Vanuatu - Solomon Islands (Seven Seas Adventures) The "Seven Seas Adventures Series” is based on the colour paper edition of "9 Years on the 7 Seas with S/Y Nor Siglar". As Kindle Fire and growing number of reading devices now support colour images, each of the 7 illustrated books corresponds to the 7 parts in the colour printed edition.

Gliding out of the last lock of the Panama Canal, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Seven years into our adventure, which was supposed to last 3-4, we should really be heading north and home. But the lure of the South Seas proves too strong, and we set sails in the opposite direction, committing ourselves to several more years at sea. Experienced and confident, we are ready to tackle the long ocean passages alone. Another milestone is reached crossing the Equator into the southern hemisphere. In Galapagos, we stand face to face with giant tortoises, learn to deal with corrupt officials, nasty infections and a sore back and prepare for the 3-week crossing to the Marquesas. An ideal passage for us, another cruiser gets lost, his boat later found in Acapulco with no one aboard. After 3000 nautical miles, we make landfall in rugged Hiva Oa, our first introduction to legendary French Polynesia: air laden with the heavy scent of tropical fruit and flowers, beautiful “vahines”, erotic hula-hula, tattooed men racing outrigger canoes, gourmet food and joie de vivre. In dangerous Tuamotus, a “Mayday” call is heard from a boat foundering on a reef and in tiny Ahe, we trade locally harvested black pearls and learn to avoid poisonous reef fish. We cruise the magic islands of Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora with their stunning turquoise crystal clear lagoons sheltered in anchorages behind treacherous reefs and experience “Heiva”, an arts and cultural festival complete with traditional games, song and dance. A 10-day brisk sail further west lies the Kingdom of Tonga where traditions are strong, evident in unique pandanus basketry and crafts, tapa clothing and special “laka laka” song-play and dance. We feast on pigs roasted on the spit, food wrapped in banana leaves cooked in underground ovens and attend our first kava ceremony. One day Tonga’s 300 lb. 80-year old king comes swimming out to Nor Siglar and circles her several times as part of his daily exercise routine. Four days further west, friendly Fiji beckons with other customs and traditions. Here we are Mr. and Mrs. Martin and here we lose our passports and credit cards - and the weather window to Australia. So we spend the cyclone season in Fiji instead, as it is paramount for offshore cruisers to be in the right place at the right time. We put Nor Siglar on the hard and fly home to visit family and friends. Five months later, we find her exactly as we left her and proceed to give her a thorough overhaul, even a paint job, as the price is right so long as we can stand the slow, built-in “Fiji Factor”. Before setting out to Vanuatu, five days to the west, we help out in a dramatic rescue operation. We spend three great weeks cruising the islands of Efate, Epi, Ambryn, Pentecost and Espiritu Santu, experiencing war dances in the buff and a close encounter with a shark, building outrigger canoes and helping an injured native. We learn about Black Magic, coming-of-age rituals and pig killings with clubs, their many taboos, arranged marriage and bride prices, and some of their pigeon English language, Bislama, where a helicopter is simply called “mixmaster blongs Jesus”. A rough seven-day crossing to the Solomon Islands tests our nerves and abilities and in a veritable “Mother of all Squalls”, thoughts of quitting the adventure start to form in our minds. In Morovo lagoon, known for its fabulous scuba diving on the many shipwrecks from WW2, we meet the world-renowned carvers of the South Pacific, but wonder about their integrity when told that one of them had rescued JFK. We love the Solomon Islands, the best-kept secret in the Pacific, it is time to move on with the seasons.

Micronesia - The Marshall Islands (Travel Adventures) The Marshall Islands, named after a British sea captain who explored the group in 1788, are scattered like flung necklaces over about 750,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean. Positioned 2,200 miles southwest of Hawaii, they occupy an area between four and 20 degrees north of the equator. The islands are aligned in two groups. Those to the west are the Ralik Chain; to the east they're in the Ratak Chain. Altogether they total 34 islands and 850 sea-washed reefs. All the islands are coral, but five of them without lagoons are referred to as coral islands. The other 29 have associated lagoons and are true atolls. Twenty-three of these islands are inhabited, with a total population of 43,335. The land adds up to a mere 70 square miles, but the lagoon areas come to an impressive 4,000 square miles. Majuro Atoll with a population of 19,664 is the capital. Pack a lunch, hire a car, and do the 30-mile drive to Laura – the longest stretch of paved road in Micronesia. Laura is a lovely palm-flanked island with no urban congestion. Visitors get a taste of the outer islands here, and the beach is nearly perfect. If you don't bring a lunch, note that in the environs there are several roadside stands that sell baskets of freshly cooked food fried chicken and reef fish, some jukuk (rice balls made with coconut,) some breadfruit if it's in season, and a few husked drinking coconuts. Count on paying $15 for a basket – enough food for three or four people. The dozens of other islands are described in detail, with information on the hotels, the restaurants, how to get there, what to see and do, even the nightlife.

About the Authors

Herman Melville wrote "The Encantadas," like Moby-Dick and "Billy Budd," by drawing on his shipboard experiences in the South Seas as a young man.

Lynn Michelsohn has written such diverse books as Roswell, Your Travel Guide to the UFO Capital of the World! and Gullah Ghosts: Stories and Folktales from the Carolina Lowcountry. Her longstanding interests in both the Galapagos Islands and Herman Melville led to this work.

Like Melville, biologist and wildlife photographer Moses Michelsohn found tortoises on the Galapagos Islands fascinating but tree frogs in Ecuador, Costa Rica, and the southeastern United States remain his primary research interest.

A Traveller's History of New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands (Traveller's Histories Series) A Traveller's History of New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands gives the curious tourist not only a modern-day portrait of New Zealand and the far-flung islands, their political systems, and economic diversity, but also looks at the early settling of this massive area which covers about a fifth of the surface of the earth.

When European navigators first sailed into this region, they were astonished at the exotic shared culture and language of the natives, separated in some cases by terrifying stretches of open ocean. The story of the peopling of the South Pacific Islands and New Zealand is one of the world's great sagas.

The book covers the whole scope of New Zealand's past and present history and allows the reader to make sense of what they see in a way that no other guidebook can.
