The uplifting true story of a young woman and her transformational journey into another culture. When 24-year-old Katie Krueger set out from Wisconsin for Senegal, West Africa, on a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, she was looking for adventure and an education. She had no idea what a profoundly new world she was entering and how completely her life and belief system would be overturned. Funny, tender, and illuminating, her memoir paints an unforgettable picture of the amazing highs and harrowing lows, bitter homesickness and soaring triumph she experiences as she learns to be at home in a whole new culture. She reminds us how big dreams and a desire to give back can change the world. Katie brings us along on her life-changing journey, which she tells in a series of stories and lessons learned by listening to West Africa – and her own heart. Maxime Renard is a detective in Dakar, Senegal. He's man with a past but also a man with a mission. When a young girl turns up dead, Renard begins a journey into the heart of a city with plenty of secrets and plenty of people intent on keeping those secrets secret. Inspired by Italo Calvino's "If On Winter's Night A Traveler...," this novella invites the reader to imagine a number of different conclusions to a story that is, perhaps, beyond conclusion. Lone voyagers are brimming with contradictions. They can afford few self doubts if they are to survive the trials of solitude, the relentless demands of single-handed sailing and the potentially overwhelming power of wind and sea. Yet what is such an adventure if not a journey of self-discovery which will test one’s confidence and self-awareness to the limit? It is likely to be a life-changing experience. And so it was for Clarissa Vincent. As the familiar English coastline disappeared over the horizon and Storm Petrel settled into the steady rhythm of the sea, canvas taut, heeling jauntily to the breeze, Clarissa too was beginning to spread her own wings, free at last to embrace a new identity and live on her own terms. A passage that was originally intended to stop at Spain slipped almost seamlessly into a voyage to West Africa. And with her went music. Friends will tell you that if you follow the sinuous sounds of a saxophone on a sunny afternoon, or subtle guitar chords quietly floating on a warm evening’s air, you will likely find Clarissa. For making music is as essential a part of her everyday life as breathing. Hand her an instrument and the melodies will flow, as they often did during undemanding spells at sea, while the nautical miles slid relentlessly under Storm Petrel’s keel. Clarissa’s voyaging may be over - at least for the present - but her musical journey knows no bounds, and, thanks to the internet, reaches out to audiences worldwide. Meanwhile I hope you enjoy reading the Voyage of Storm Petrel as much as I have. Senegal Sojourn: Selections from One Teacher's Journal is a personal account of experiences while working with foreign language teachers and writers of fiction in Africa during an academic year. Affording glimpses into that stay, whether in classrooms, on the streets of the capital, Dakar, at concerts, with writers and intellectuals, or while sightseeing in Senegal and Mali, the journal offers a record of what the year held for a Fulbright Scholar learning from as well as contributing to a vibrant cultural scene. The diary is based on lived experience in a predominantly Muslim country, in an effort to begin to interact with and learn from a part of the world which demands respect and challenges impositions, yet continues to intrigue. While these experiences are set within the framework of a particular year (2003-2004), stories are woven from them which suggest ongoing practices and traditions, changes and tensions, struggles and feats, as well as a hint of what transcends this particular time. The result is an invitation to consider Africa and, in particular, the dynamics of life in Dakar, in and out of the classroom. Reading from this journal before approaching theoretical analysis provides grounding and the opportunity to walk with the author into another space and rhythm. It is a diary that brings Africa out of the textbook and propels the reader, body and soul, into Senegal.Author: Kathleen Madigan Kindle Edition: 253 pages Kindle eBook Company: Lexington Books (2010-02-08) (2010-02-08) List Price: $70.00 Amazon Price:
