Lonely Planet Russia (Country Travel Guide) Expanded coverage of this title helps travellers get off the beaten track, from Siberia to the Caucasus. The Siberia chapter is also split into two, Western and Eastern Siberia, to make it more easily digestible for the reader. This work features an interview with a Master distiller at a Vodka factory and other locals who share their highlights and recommendations. Belarus has now been removed from the book so it focusses entirely on the 'grand enigma' that is Russia.

Helsinki, Finland Travel Guide - What To See & Do In 2012 Kindle version of our illustrated travel guide will take you to Helsinki, Finland.

Founded in 1550, Helsinki the "Daughter of the Baltic" has been the Finnish capital since 1812, when it was rebuilt by the tsars of Russia along the lines of a miniature St. Petersburg, a role it has played in many a Cold War movie.

Today, Helsinki pulls off the trick of being something of an international metropolis while still retaining a small-town feel. The best time to visit is in summer, when Finns peel off their overcoats and flock to outdoor bars and cafes to enjoy the sunshine.

The architects Johan Albrecht Ehrenström, a native Finn, and Carl Ludwig Engel, from Germany rebuilt the city in the Empire style. This can be seen today around the Lutheran Cathedral, which was completed in 1852. The same style, and even architects, is also a part of Saint Petersburg's history.

Though thoroughly a Nordic capital, Helsinki today reflects the influences gained from its Western and Eastern heritage.

Travels in Siberia

A Dazzling Russian travelogue from the bestselling author of Great Plains

In his astonishing new work, Ian Frazier, one of our greatest and most entertaining storytellers, trains his perceptive, generous eye on Siberia, the storied expanse of Asiatic Russia whose grim renown is but one explanation among hundreds for the region’s fascinating, enduring appeal. In Travels in Siberia, Frazier reveals Siberia’s role in history—its science, economics, and politics—with great passion and enthusiasm, ensuring that we’ll never think about it in the same way again.

With great empathy and epic sweep, Frazier tells the stories of Siberia’s most famous exiles, from the well-known—Dostoyevsky, Lenin (twice), Stalin (numerous times)—to the lesser known (like Natalie Lopukhin, banished by the empress for copying her dresses) to those who experienced unimaginable suffering in Siberian camps under the Soviet regime, forever immortalized by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago.

Travels in Siberia is also a unique chronicle of Russia since the end of the Soviet Union, a personal account of adventures among Russian friends and acquaintances, and, above all, a unique, captivating, totally Frazierian take on what he calls the “amazingness” of Russia—a country that, for all its tragic history, somehow still manages to be funny. Travels in Siberia will undoubtedly take its place as one of the twenty-first century’s indispensable contributions to the travel-writing genre.
