Essential reading for hip, discerning travelers and on-the-go locals, the guide provides insider tips on over 100 handpicked Paris venues, covering hotels, nightlife, restaurants, shopping, sights, and spas.

Organized by neighborhood for easy navigation, The Purple Passport to Paris also includes helpful maps and city-orienting info about transportation, customs, and seasonal highlights.

The Purple Passport team personally visits every spot that it reviews and never accepts compensation for featuring a venue on the site or in its eBooks. First-person accounts of the team's travel experiences can be found on the companion blog, The Diary of The Purple Passport.

Article Excerpt titled "Paris, France" (P. 36) by Marybeth Bond, Summer 2009 Issue

Last fall two girlfriends and I treated ourselves to a private shopping guide for one day through Nuit Blanche Tours. Karen, the author of Practical Paris (www.TapBooksPublishing.com) and founder, taught us how to find chic clothing at affordable prices. She knows how to find designer showrooms, off-the-beaten track boutiques and fashion-specific street markets. She introduced us to a great street "marche" in a residential section of southern Paris. The market is near the Convention Metro stop and operates in the street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 9 AM to around 1 PM. Look for the stalls lining the streets selling food, flowers, clothes, shoes, bags and all sorts of things at very low prices. I bought a suede purse and shoes to match and a pair of jeans for just 4 euros. How do you know if they'll fit when you can't try them on? Karen showed me a trick that works! Put the waist around your neck and if it overlaps about an inch, the pants will fit.

Adrian Leeds Top 100 Cheap Insider Paris Restaurants Adrian Leeds Top 100 Cheap Insider Paris Restaurants

You don’t need to be rich to dine well – you just need to be in the know!

I began writing this guide in 1996, not long after I moved to Paris as a permanent resident and ferreting out charming, little out-of-the-way places where tourists likely won’t find easily, but to which the locals flock. It is often the simple, hole-in-the-wall, mom-pop restaurants that serve the best food at the most reasonable prices...and they are getting harder and harder to find in today's modern world. When you’re a tourist on holiday you will often end up eating in the touristy spots that are convenient – and you’ll often be disappointed. But carry this guide with you in the City of Light, and no matter where you are at any given moment you'll be able to find great French restaurants (and sometimes other kinds of cuisine) not far from where you are – so you won't have to waste one single precious meal on bad food in the city we love most – Paris!

Bon Appétit!

What People Are Saying . . . .

“I can't claim to have tried Adrian's recommendations in all the quartiers, but regarding mine -- the 6th arrondissement -- and others nearby, she's straight on, with (unlike some cheap eats guides) a high standard and reliable palate.”

--Diane Johnson. Author, "Le Divorce"

"For two decades, Adrian Leeds has prowled the grandest of the grands boulevards, the most intimate of the tiny impasses of Paris, eating her way through the entire range of French gastronomy. Now, she’s given us her intimate guide to 100 favorite finds, not to mention her dos and don’ts of how best to enjoy them, along with a valuable glossary to help even novice would-be Francophiles navigate their way through the thickets of a Parisian menu. A must-read, must-carry guide to all that is just so wonderful about dining out in Paris."

--David A. Andelman, Editor, World Policy Journal; former Paris correspondent, CBS News

"This brand new carefully vetted restaurant guide is absolutely marvelous, trustworthy — and Adrian, the author is too! I highly recommend you download her guide — it’s where the French eat — and affordable and absolutely top notch. This lady is a dynamo!"
--Kathleen Spivack, author and poet, winner of many literary prizes and nominatee for a Pulitzer Prize

“I think I have every guide published for Paris… Leeds is definitely my favorite, and well worth the price. Every place we tried from this guide…was a winner, most even better than anticipated.”
--Donna K.

“Your restaurant guide is super. This is our fifth visit to Paris since 1997 and ‘je me demande’: ‘How did we survive sans le guide de Leeds!’”
--Simmie G.

“I used the guide every day while visiting Paris. My elderly mother and husband both thought I was a genius! We ate at wonderful restaurants, and were delighted by the prices. The guide was very accurate with its descriptions. Because we used the guide we were able to see parts of Paris that we would not have ventured to on our own.”
--Gretchen A.

Falafel stands line Rue de Rosiers in Paris. Photo by Maarten (Superchango)/Flickr.com
As appealing as it is to indulge in a three-course meal at a Paris bistro, you can also savor many French specialties on the street. Where to Eat: By day, sidewalks in the Left Bank's Latin Quarter around Saint Michel get crowded with sandwich vendors selling baguettes. In the Marais, you'll want to try the falafel stands on Rue de Rosiers. At night, the air is filled with the aroma of freshly prepared crepes, especially around Montparnasse, in the Latin Quarter, and near the nightclub areas. How Much: A Nutella or chestnut-puree crepe will cost about 4 Euro; a jambon et fromage baguette is around 6 Euro.

There are more clichés about Paris than there are tourists at the Louvre, but the fact is that underneath each overused hackneyed cliché is a glistening kernel of truth. The City of Light, the City of Love and the City of Romance, familiar platitudes, but once you experience it for yourself you understand why. There is a je ne sais quoi allure to this city that beguiles, but never completely reveals what makes it so universally appealing. Artists, poets, writers, and composers have tried to define exactly what it is about this place, and yet they succeed only to a point. Perhaps it is as elusive as defining love, for to be in Paris entails experiencing love, about someone, something, some place.

There is so much to do - you know the big ones, the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, Sacre Coeur, St. Germain des Pres, the Left Bank, the Right Bank, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées, the Opéra- but don’t miss the fun of discovering the small ones, the ones off the beaten path. Nothing like taking your time strolling thru the turn of the century mansion that houses Musée Marmottan then enjoying a café and patisserie in the museums jewel box café.

Wandering aimlessly is romantic. Getting lost isn’t romantic. In fact there are few things that can drain the romance out of a situation faster than realizing that you’re hopelessly lost. So take your travel map and put it away if you want to wander, but have no fear that your wandering will turn into a lost odyssey. You can always pull out the STREETWISE® Paris Map and get yourself pointed back in the right direction.

Paris is not without faults. Sometimes people can be rude, but that’s the case anywhere in the world - be it a large city or small village. You get what you give. And in the case of Paris, as with any true love, you accept the flaws with the charms, the weaknesses with the strengths. In the end the true beauty of Paris will surpass any blemish. Life from a Parisian perspective is beautiful. But that’s another cliché, isn’t it?

Our pocket size map of Paris is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use.

An explorer by nature, she still travels extensively (sometimes with her new Canadian husband), but the City of Light is her beacon: "Whenever I leave Paris, I feel this strong pang in my heart."

Submitted by ACanadianGuy, Ontario: Insider tip – if you are looking for an excellent guidebook on Paris, I can recommend Practical Paris by Karen Henrich of Nuit Blanche Tours. She’s a Canadian who has lived in Paris for several years and points out valuable insights usually not seen in other guidebooks.
