Oslo, the Fjords & Southern Norway (Travel Adventures) This guide is based on our larger Adventure Guide to Scandinavia, but with abundant color photographs added and focusing on Oslo, the Fjords & Southern Norway. The author is a native of Scandinavia and knows it intimately.

The spectacular, scenic fjords of Norway are long, deep and usually surrounded by mountains. Since most of the country's 4½ million people live in urban areas, it leaves most of the country uninhabited. This makes for abundant wildlife in the beautiful mountains, forests, lakes, and the famous fjords. Half the country's area is above the timberline while 25% is covered by forest. The highest mountain, and the highest peak in Scandinavia, is Mount Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m/8,100 feet), while the longest fjord is Sognefjorden (204 km/126 miles), the longest in the world. Norway is the home of skiing, not only for Scandinavia, but for the whole world. While Norway has some great ski resorts for alpine skiing and produced several great skiers in the four disciplines (slalom, giant-slalom, Super-G and downhill), the most popular form of skiing by far is cross-country, which is considered the national sport.

Oslo is a small capital but, with just over 500,000 people, it's Norway's biggest city by far. What makes Oslo unique is its location. The Oslofjord links the city with the sea to the south. In the other three directions you find mountains, lakes and forests within easy reach from the city center.

The fjords were created during the latest Ice Age when the layer of ice, which was three km (1.8 mile) thick, cut deep incisions in the earth's crust. Fjords are found all along the coastline in Norway. The four major fjords in this region are Hardangerfjord, Sognefjord, Nordfjord and Geirangerfjord. Sognefjord is the longest and also the deepest of the Norwegian fjords; some parts of it have been measured as deep as 1,300 m (4,000 feet). Geirangerfjord has some of the most spectacular waterfalls you will ever find anywhere in the world. Hardangerfjord is known for its flowers and fruit orchards in the springtime. National Geographic Traveler, in a global survey done by 200 specialists, reported that the Norwegian Fjords ranked as the world's greatest destination.

Discover Scandinavia's pristine wilderness with suggestions on the best places to ski, hike, cycle, canoe and dogsled. The author takes you to Renaissance castles and Viking ruins; outlines spectacular driving tours; recommends the best cruises; and guides you through the magnificent countryside. Hundreds of hotel and restaurant choices are offered in all price ranges--from budget-friendly B&Bs to luxury hotels, from casual eateries to the hottest new restaurants, complete with thorough reviews showing what makes each place special. The myths and legends are explored, along with the history--from Harald Bluetooth to Sven Forkbeard, Knut the Great, Gorm the Old and the Vikings--examining how those traditions carry through in the culture today. The guide shows you how to meet the people, get involved, experience Norway directly and unforgettably.

Norway From the Land of Vikings In the 9th Century Norsemen swept down from the Scandinavian peninsula to become the scourge of Europe. They sacked the city of Paris, founded the city of Dublin, Ireland, served the Byzantine Court of Iceland, and discovered America in the year 1000. With the coming of Christianity in the 11th Century they settled into their own lands, withdrew from the affairs of an emerging Europe and sank into obscurity for a few hundred years. Fishing and farming were the primary occupations. Cod was once the main export of Norway, and it is still important. But today Norway is the second largest exporter of oil in the world. In the 19960's oil was discovered in the North Sea off the coast of Norway. But how to get it? Norway launched one of the most audacious oil recovery efforts, designing and building the most massive offshore drilling platform on the Globe ... like the Vikings of old, they plunder the sea for oil. Almost all Norwegians speak English, have a relative living in America, or have visited the U.S. themselves. But they still retain a unique culture and remain a vibrant, dynamic people, determined to make a satisfying and rewarding life for every citizen in their Country. How they accomplish it is a fascinating study of a success oriented people." Norway - From the Land of the Vikings" will cover the entire country from south to the North Cape, the most northern point in Europe. We will visit all the major cities starting with Oslo the Capital and Constitution Day celebration...the biggest holiday in Norway after Christmas.Stavanger is the center of the oil industry which has transformed Norway into a relatively wealthy nation today. Modern technology has been applied to developing the most stupendous offshore drilling platforms anywhere. Norway is the second largest exporter of oil in the World (second only to Saudia Arabia). Even so, gasoline is near $5 a gallon.Bergen is the second largest city, an old time fish market still exists along the waterfront, as well as part of the medieval city...wooden buildings which escaped the many times the city was destroyed by fire.North, we journey over to the Lofoton Islands and some of the most surreal beauty of the Country. We see rows and rows of cod drying in the sun. This used to be the major export of Norway, but declining fish stocks have forced the Islanders to divert attention to tourism. To that end, they have discovered and rebuilt the largest Viking communal house ever found. The Vikings turn out to be more than just brutal raiders...they had sophisticated housing with most advanced construction techniques, wove complex fabrics for clothing, were the first to develop sails that could sail into the wind, the first to develop a compass, the first Europeans to discover and land in North America (500 years before Columbus). They were such accomplished sailors they were able to take cattle and sheep from Norway to Iceland across the Atlantic Ocean! A thousand years ago!In Alta, the midnight sun warms the air to 80º Fahrenheit, even though we are 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The Sami live here...people you've always called Lapplanders. They have been here 10,000 years, and still depend on reindeer to some extent, as they have for centuries.

Around The World - Oslo, Norway Travel DVD Around The World - Oslo, Norway Travel DVD Audio: ENGLISH, Chinese Subtitle: English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) Oslo is a county and municipality, as well as the capital and largest city in Norway. Oslo was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Founded around 1048 by King Harald III "Hardraade" of Norway, the city was largely destroyed by a fire in 1624. The Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV moved and rebuilt the city closer to Akershus fortress, as Christiania (briefly also spelt Kristiania). In 1925 the city reclaimed its original Norwegian name, Oslo. The diocese of Oslo is one of the five original dioceses in Norway, which originated around the year 1070. Oslo is the cultural, scientific, economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The city is home to many companies within the maritime sector, some of them are amongst the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers and maritime insurance brokers. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme. Oslo is considered a global city and ranked "Beta World City" in studies performed by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network in 2008. For several years, Oslo has been listed as one of the most expensive cities in the world along with such other global capitals as Zurich, Geneva, Copenhagen, Paris, and Tokyo. In 2009, however, Oslo regained its status as the world's most expensive city. As of 2010, the metropolitan area of Oslo has a population of 1,422,442 of whom 912,046 live in the contiguous conurbation.

Complete Travellers Guide to Norway (Travellers Guide Series) Norway (Norge) is the westernmost, northernmost — and in fact the easternmost — of the three Scandinavian countries. Best known for the complex and deep fjords along its west coast, it stretches from the North Sea near Denmark and Scotland into the Arctic Ocean where it borders northern Finland and the northwestern tip of Russia.

A great introduction to Norway is the one-day Norway in a Nutshell package on a single ticket from Oslo or Bergen into the mountains, with a boat trip through the fjords. You can break the trip at several interesting cabins for walking or just admiring the view, and even hire a mountain bike for part of the journey. One of the highlights of the 'Norway in a Nutshell' package is Flåmsbana, a 20km railway that's one of the steepest in the world. Along the way you'll see beautiful mountains, rivers, valleys, waterfalls, and other beautiful sights on your way to the town of Flåm.
• Go on top of the nearest top/mountain. Just for the walk. And for the view.
• Try the fine beer (pilsner) from the oldest brewery in Norway, Aass Bryggeri (pronounced: åås).

Hiking
Norway has endless opportunties for hiking in its wide wilderness, from easy walks in Oslo's city forest to alpine climbing in Jotunheimen or Troms. A number of areas are protected as national parks, but most the country is equally attractive and available to the public.

In Norway, travelers enjoy a right to access, which means it is possible to camp freely in most places for a couple of days, as long as you're not on cultivated land and provided you are at least 150 m away from houses and farm buildings. Don't leave any traces and take your rubbish away for recycling.

Den Norske Turistforening (DNT) (The Norwegian Mountain Touring Association) operates many staffed and self-service mountain cabins, marks mountain routes, offers maps and route information, guided tours, and several other services for mountain hikers in Norway.
Mountainous aereas ar popular among both Norwegians and tourists. Why not visit Galdhøpiggen (2469), the highest mountain in Norway, or join a [[musk ox safari]] in Dovrefjell!

For maps, bypass Google Maps, whose coverage of Norway is poor, and try the national mapping agency's Atlas.no site, which concords with their excellent printed hiking maps.

Skiing
Both cross country and alpine skiing are popular sports in the winter, and the largest areas, Trysil,Hafjell or Hemsedal for example, compete well with the Alps. Telemark is also a nice area to ski in. (The birth place of cross country ski.) Voss, Geilo and Oppdal are other major ski resorts. Around Oslo there is large park ideal for cross-country skiing. In Stryn, at Galdhøpiggen and at Folgefonna there alpine ski centres that are open in summer only (May-September), offering unique opportunities for alpine skiing in T-shirt and short pants.

Cycling
In Norway, you can rent, virtually everywhere, a bicycle. Cycling routes exist usually near bigger cities; you can find some tours at Cycle tourism in Norway. Some roads and tunnels are forbidden for cyclists as they are life-threatening; read the section By bicycle above. Some city dumps may have a special section where you can pick up discarded bicycles (and other stuff) for free. The charity thrift-stores (FRETEX/ELEVATOR/NMS Gjenbruk)sometimes stock used bicycles.
