Nigeria - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa with an internal market of 150 million people and an economy growing at around 8 percent a year, is potentially Africa’s next powerhouse. It is nearly one and a half times the size of Texas, with a landmass varying from sandy beaches and tropical jungles, to plains, mountains, and desert.

This important West African nation is made up of 250 culturally distinct ethno-linguistic groups. The largest communities are the Hausa in the north, rooted in the Islamic city-states of the famed trans-Saharan trade routes; the Yoruba of the southwest, where ancient kingdoms nurtured some of Africa’s best-known art forms; and the Igbo of the southeast, where decentralized, egalitarian communities have produced many of the country’s most successful traders and businessmen. Nigeria has had a bad press: international reports of violence, corruption, and natural disasters completely overlook the vibrancy and artistic sophistication of its diverse cultural groups, most of whom live peacefully in mixed communities.

Although Nigeria is the world’s fifth-largest producer of oil, there is a huge disparity in income. The competition for scarce resources and the country’s dense diversity have fostered ingenuity and perseverance on the part of its ambitious citizens. They are natural entrepreneurs, and intelligent and shrewd negotiators. They are also proud, and sensitive to criticism. Most are devout, gregarious, and hospitable, and disgusted by corruption. Now, in the twelfth consecutive year of democracy after years of military rule, major political and economic reforms are under way.

Culture Smart! Nigeria is a unique introduction to life there today. Most of what is written about the country comes from the perspective of one or other tribe. There is nothing quite like this concise description of its major cultural traditions. The people most visitors will meet are well-educated, sophisticated, and well-versed in Western ways. Nonetheless, foreign businesspeople cannot hope to be successful without understanding the ancient and complex systems of behavior, values, and attitudes that underlie the country’s vibrant social and business life.

Looking for Transwonderland: Travels in Nigeria
Noo Saro-Wiwa was brought up in England, but every summer she was dragged back to visit her father in Nigeria — a country she viewed as an annoying parallel universe where she had to relinquish all her creature comforts and sense of individuality. After her father, activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, was killed there, she didn’t return for several years. Recently, she decided to come to terms with the country her father given his life for.

Saro-Wiwa travels from the exuberant chaos of Lagos to the calm beauty of the eastern mountains; from the eccentricity of a Nigerian dog show to the decrepit kitsch of the Transwonderland Amusement Park. She explores Nigerian Christianity, delves into the country’s history of slavery, examines the corrupting effect of oil, and ponders the huge success of Nollywood.

She finds the country as exasperating as ever, and frequently despairs at the corruption and inefficiency she encounters. But she also discovers that it si far more beautiful and varied than she had ever imagined, with its captivating thick tropical rainforest and ancient palaces and monuments. Most engagingly of all, she introduces us to the many people she meets, and gives us hilarious insights into the African character, its passion, wit and ingenuity.

Brigitte

"Die weiße Hexe is well written and never boring. Once the reader immerses him- or herself into a world that seems 'unreal' at times, Ilona Maria Hilliges' story is one that won't let you go easily. .... Ilona Maria Hilliges' book provides an interesting, exciting read for Europeans and Africans alike. And, although Nigeria is portayed through the eyes of a young white German woman, her account offers a lot of information and insights into Nigerian society and culture - from patriarchal structures to the power of spiritual connection. And despite the fact that Ilona Maria Hilliges lost the one big love in her life, she never lost her love for Africa." The African Courier, Februar/März 2001

"Neue Lebenswege beschreiten, dramatische Momente erleben, große Gefühle auskosten und beherzt Ungewöhnliches wagen. ...

Ilona Maria Hilliges lebt in Berlin.

My Nigeria: Five Decades of Independence
His nineteenth-century cousin, paddled ashore by slaves, twisted the arms of tribal chiefs to sign away their territorial rights in the oil-rich Niger Delta. Sixty years later, his grandfather helped craft Nigeria’s constitution and negotiate its independence, the first of its kind in Africa. Four decades later, Peter Cunliffe-Jones arrived as a journalist in the capital, Lagos, just as military rule ended, to face the country his family had a hand in shaping.

Part family memoir, part history, My Nigeria is a piercing look at the colonial legacy of an emerging power in Africa. Marshalling his deep knowledge of the nation's economic, political, and historic forces, Cunliffe-Jones surveys its colonial past and explains why British rule led to collapse at independence. He also takes an unflinching look at the complicated country today, from email hoaxes and political corruption to the vast natural resources that make it one of the most powerful African nations; from life in Lagos’s virtually unknown and exclusive neighborhoods to the violent conflicts between the numerous tribes that make up this populous African nation. As Nigeria celebrates five decades of independence, this is a timely and personal look at a captivating country that has yet to achieve its great potential.

$18,000,000,000 a Year in Gemstone Sales and Here is How You Can Get Some of That Pie! (Gemstones Projects) This small book tells you how to make money with the colored gemstones with emphasis on the Nigerian gemstones. Nigeria has some of the finest gemstones in the world but they have been overlooked due to the fact that they have oil. They have been concentrating on the oil and left other minerals for a "rainy day" which is good for the gemstones buyer.

This is one of the projects I have written about where you need to get off the couch and go see for yourself and get what you want. It is not a business that need a "Rocket Science" mentality but someone with the will to make some money and enjoy a trip outside of your own world or bubble.

The money is there for someone with an imagination and the will to learn some small details about gemstones and a few dollars and you can get a piece of this money pie.

Dead Men Don't Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa What does it take to follow your dream? Quite a bit, if it means crossing Africa. That’s what a couple discovers when they leave on a seven-month, 16,000-km. overland journey from London to Cape Town, South Africa. Against their better judgment, they join a do-it-yourself safari with a bizarre band of companions. After their dream quickly turns into a nightmare, they set off across the continent alone—and that makes all the difference.

Wilson, in a style one reviewer described as “a hybrid of Paul Theroux and Tom Robbins,” takes you onto the crazed roads of Africa and into the hearts and lives of its people.

Meet mountain gorillas face-to-face. Melt down during a Saharan breakdown. Hunt dik-dik with Pygmies. Climb Africa’s highest mountain. Hop the “gun-run” through Mozambique's civil war. Rush down thundering Zambezi rapids and dive into South Africa’s cauldron of turmoil.

Join us for a raw look at the real Africa—one far removed from the usual postcard perfection.

From the Lowell Thomas gold award-winning author of Over the Top & Back Again, Along the Templar Trail, and Yak Butter Blues.

Sample Reviews: "Journeys of body and soul in every sense of the word... Interlaced with this honesty and detail are Wilson's beautiful prose, obvious passion for adventure and a deep inquisitiveness about other cultures, making this book a pleasure to read. Highly recommended." ~ Midwest Book Review

"A masterful crossroads of characters, exotic places, history and human drama in a rig that never stalls, and allows the devil to drive his own ill-behaved backyard..." ~ Richard Bangs, legendary adventurer, author of "Mystery of the Nile"

"Entertaining and a monument to those who would take on the challenge of land travel across one of the most dangerous, unhealthy continents in the world." ~ Heartland Reviews

"Honest, gritty and insightful...it makes the world's most exciting continent read just like that." ~ John Heminway, author of "No Man's Land: A Personal Journey into Africa"

"I was swept away by the drama and storytelling...Wilson is never a tourist. He travels heart-first with both feet solidly on the ground and his curiosity always in high gear. He is exactly the right person to be writing travel books for the rest of us." ~ Joseph W. Bean, Maui Weekly

"Travel writing at its most sublime, a paean to Africa in all her contradictory beauty, and a tribute to the resiliency of those who travel beyond boundaries not only in search of meaning, but also of understanding." ~ C.W. Gortner, author of The Secret Lion and The Last Queen

"One of the most engaging travel books we have read." ~ RealTravelAdventures.com

"Powerful and gripping story...Fascinating, informative, humorous, poignant, surprising...a terrific read from first page to last-would make a popular addition to any personal or community library Travel section." ~ Midwest Book Review, Travel Shelf
