Kindle version of our illustrated travel guide will take you to Marrakech, Morocco.Marrakech, also known as Marrakesh, is one of the imperial cities of Morocco. It is the third largest city in Morocco after Casablanca and Rabat, and lies near the foothills of the snow capped Atlas Mountains and a few hours away from the foot of the Sahara Desert. Its location and contrasting landscape has made it a enviable destination in Morocco. The city is divided into two distinct parts: the Medina, the historical city, and the new European modern district called Gueliz or Ville Nouvelle. The Medina is full of intertwining narrow passageways and local shops full of character. In contrast, Gueliz plays host to modern restaurants, fast food chains and big brand stores. The great American novelist Edith Wharton (1862-1937) here gives us her colorful and textured travel memoir "In Morroco" (1920). Still a deeply energized work, Wharton imbues the reader with a sense of wonder that served as the impetus for her travels into this exotic Northern African land. Edith Wharton made her name as a novelist closely associated with the prolific Henry James. Their personal and literary kinship may be seen in much of her long and short fiction. And just as Henry James' travel novels arrest and captivate, so too does "In Morocco". This account explores the culture, history, and beauty of a Morocco of yore in an intriguing combination of realist and romantic prose. Wharton weaves together anthropology with poetry, depicting the customs and manners of this place in all its splendor. Written with the eye of a documentarian, "In Morocco" is a breath-taking read full of wanderlust.Author: Edith Wharton Kindle Edition: 106 pages Kindle eBook Company: Digireads.com (2004-07-01) (2004-07-01) List Price: $8.99 Amazon Price:

I was there exactly at the time, and in a few minutes the Emperor appeared, mounted on a beautiful white horse, attended by an officer of state, holding over him a large damask umbrella, most elegantly embroidered, and followed by all his great officers, body-guards, and a numerous band of music. He was greeted with huzzas in the Moorish style by the populace, and received at all the gates and avenues of the town with a general discharge of artillery and small arms, the people falling upon their knees in the dust as he passed. The streets were covered with mats, and the road, as far as the plain where the troops were drawn out, was strewed with all kinds of flowers.Author: John Buffa Kindle Edition: 105 pages Kindle eBook Company: Kessinger Publishing, LLC (2004-06-17) (2004-06-17) List Price: $15.96 Amazon Price:

Everything I've learned about being an expat in Morocco from how to marry your Morocccan love to finding a house, starting a business, or living in specific cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fes, or Tangier.Wow...just saw the scathing one star review below and can only say that this is everything that I wish I'd known before moving to Morocco. Having lived her e for 3 years, I haven't learned it all, but what I've put in this book certainly would have helped. As to the review by 'expat on the move' - I think it is telling that this is the only review they've given and I more than suspect that it's a particularly nasty member of the expat community in Fes who has been trying to discredit me since I arrived here and began writing about Morocco. That's another aspect of expat life in Morocco (or anywhere) - there are some serious jerks to be contended with.
