Freya Stark first journeyed to Iraq in 1927. Seven years after the establishment of the British Mandate, the modern state was in its infancy and worlds apart from the country it has since become. During her many years in Iraq, Stark was witness to the rise and fall of the British involvement in the country as well as the early years of independence. Typically—and controversially—she chose to live outside the close-knit western expatriate scene and immersed herself in the way of life of ordinary Iraqis—living in the “native” quarter of the city and spending time with its tribal sheikhs and leaders. Venturing out of Baghdad, she traveled to Mosul, Nineveh, Tikrit and Najaf, where she perceptively describes the millennia-old tensions between Sunni and Shi'a. In the 1940s she returned again, this time traveling south, to the Marsh Arabs, whose way of life has now all but disappeared; north into Kurdistan and later, Kuwait, in the days before the oil boom. This is a paperback book edition of the Iraq Study Group Report, The Way Forward -- A New Approach. It is the results of the Baker-Hamilton Commission, lead by well known American political leaders James A. Baker, III and Lee H. Hamilton. The other individuals who served on the commission included former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor among other notable politicians. This report is important because it calls for the United States Government to make serious changes in how it deals with the ongoing Iraqi conflict. This book is an excellent text for those interested in the ongoings of the George W. Bush administrations war of terror. Students of political science, and any american citizens should read this title to understand the changes recommended for this conflict by the Baker-Hamilton Commission.Author: The Iraq Study Group Paperback: 108 pages Company: Filiquarian (2007-11-07) ISBN: 1599862395 List Price: $12.99 Amazon Price: $3.50 Used Price: $0.01

Iraq today is synonymous in the minds of travelers with the past. Barely two hours from Baghdad, one can walk in the footsteps of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon or drive past Nineveh's pre-history ochre walls, with their caverns and winged lions. A Different View Of Life At The Front Rather than combat, this book is about the day-to-day life with troops in Iraq. The focus is on the 90-99 percent of the time that is tedium or boredom, rather than the one percent that is the focus of most photographs seen on the news. Foreword by Matthew Currier Burden, author of "The Blogs of War" "You can see that in his excellent work here. And I sincerely believe that you will experience something new through his “arch” into a very untraveled world…" Introduction by JD Johannes, author and filmmaker, "Outside The Wire" "Blake’s photography shows the preferred normative, but because it is not news, rarely seen." “Blake has come a long way since his days as an assistant at Playboy Chicago. It’s great to see just how far, by his showing a side of combat that few ever see, or even have the opportunity to see. A super job, I’m glad to say I knew him ‘when’….” David Mecey, former staff photographer, Playboy Magazine. "Blake has generated an outstanding work that reframes the still quiet moments of war. One could easily use this book in reintegrating one's self, family, and life. The parallels drawn between the landscape of war and the landscape of our southern United States (which still bears the scars of past war) are particularly apt. I'm pleased to see this work become available to our community." - Damon Bryan Shackelford, creator of Delta Bravo Sierra military cartoons.Author: C. It's the timeless, classic tale: girl-meets-recession, recession-forces-girl-to-go-to-Iraq. I Have Iraq in My Shoe follows the author out of her comfort zone and into the Middle East. Taking the wit of Jen Lancaster and the fun of Sophie Kinsella and moving it to the desert, this is the story of a single, fashion-obsessed American female who finds herself metaphorically strapping on a Kevlar caftan to work in Iraq for a year. Irreverent and hilarious, saucy and smart, it's a tale of lessons both taught and learned, and all in the midst of a war zone: from teaching Iraqi women in headscarves while wearing designer pumps to enduring the shame and frustration of astronomical luggage fees.Author: Gretchen Berg Paperback: 400 pages Company: Sourcebooks (2012-05-01) (2012-05-01) ISBN: 1402265794 List Price: $14.99 Amazon Price: $8.78 Used Price: $9.48

This new Bradt title responds to huge public interest in both Iraq and its people and is less a travel guide – certainly for the time being – and more of an objective account of Saddam’s regime as a whole, and the build-up to the recent conflict. Focusing on developments in post-Saddam Iraq, without ignoring the horrors which have occurred in the aftermath of the war, the author highlights the country’s positive progression, with chapters such as ‘Iraqi Voices’ – describing the hopes, fears and ambitions of Iraqis – and ‘Post-Saddam Iraq’ – where we get to hear the views of prominent politicians on the war and how it was handled.
When Bradt published the first edition of its travel guide to Iraq, the country was slowly breaking free from the shackles of sanctions, Western tourists were returning in small numbers and it looked as if the fledgling tourist industry would grow. As in that travel guide, this new book introduces the magnificent ancient Iraqi civilisations and provides a historical background to the country, as well as providing updated practical information on which places are still open to visitors.

An American political science professor is found dead in a local catfish pond and most in the expat community suspect suicide. Then one of her graduate students disappears and Bonner sees the connection. But it’s the last thing he wants to get involved with. He’d rather open a little coffee shop on campus and enjoy the best SE Asia has to offer. But when an old friend reappears and needs help, Bonner is compelled to change. He’s forced on a mission up the Mekong River to Laos where he will take on a surprisingly American cargo, two soldiers AWOL from Iraq who followed the old hippie trail as an escape. "One of the best books to come out of the coverage of Iraq. A beautifully written personal memoir [possessing] a startling writing capacity." Village From 1998 until the chaotic aftermath of the invasion, news reporter Richard Downes witnessed firsthand the incredible changes that have overwhelmed the Iraqi people. In Search of Iraq goes far deeper into the environment than the daily news reports seen by the Western World. Small events of ordinary life and whispered conversations in back alleys are as telling as the grand political statements. With an unflinching focus on the customs, religion, culture and historical diversity of all the communities in the region, Richard Downes reveals the true horror and impact of war, as well as the friendships that can blossom in a country torn to shreds. What emerges is a stunning memorial to a disintegrating nation. Nominated for the Irish Best Book of the Year in 2007, this important new American edition previews what will emerge in the wake of the Surge, after the American elections and beyond the US withdrawal. Downes reports on a situation that puts Kurdistan, in particular, in jeopardy. Iraq’s northern province has been largely free of the violence and chaos that marked the rest of the country. Now Downes finds the Kurds lost in a sea of contradictions. They provide the President and foreign minister of Iraq and yet have no intention of supporting the state. They denounce the terrorism in their beloved city of Kirkuk and in Mosul and yet offer safe haven for attacks launched at Turkey. These contradictions are compounded by a vicious and secret proxy war that is being conducted on the Kurd’s Iranian border. U.S. forces and the Iranian army are fighting an unreported war directly across this inhospitable frontier. Through the eyes of the reporter’s friend and university lecturer, the swirling emotions of post-war Iraq are profound. While the Kurds have done best of all the Iraqi groups, they fear being abandoned, and suspect the Americans have done deals that will leave the Kurds high and dry. Downes returns again and again to his friends and colleagues and with persistence, cunning, and not a small amount of risk, shows the realities of life today in Iraq and what presages the future. Richard Downes is a journalist living in Dublin. After working in the financial press, he joined the BBC where he worked for a decade. For three and a half years he crossed the African continent covering wars, insurrections and catastrophes. His BBC posting Jordan brought him to the Mideast in 1998, and he subsequently found his niche in Iraq. Isolated through international sanctions, Iraq and its people captivated him. Vincent Browne described him as "the best reporter covering the war." He has continued to travel to Iraq in the chaotic post-war era. "I am not moving to Iraq to teach." How does a liberal American girl in red suede boots end up teaching English to conservative Muslim Iraqis in headscarves? Gretchen Berg has met the recession: she has eaten cereal for dinner, given up the gym membership, and come face to face with looming unemployment. To cope, she decided to uproot her life and move to the Middle East. She expected to make some good money, pay off some bad debt, and take some photos of camels. She did not expect to feel at home. She did not expect to fall for a student. She did not expect Diet Coke withdrawal. Irreverent, hilarious, and completely relevant, I Have Iraq in My Shoe takes a single, broke, fashion-conscious American female who prefers Project Runaway to CNN and tosses her into Iraq in exchange for cash and vacation time. In the second of a three book series describing his life in the Middle East after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, the author finds he is alone again in the remote regions of Arabia. Rather inadvertently, the author becomes even further immersed in the Arab and Muslim culture of the Sultanate of Oman.Through his experiences, the author is able to describe to the casual reader the roles of women, especially their limitations and value in Arab and Muslim society. Through a number of sometimes humorous and other times, tragically pathetic schemes to maintain a sense of belonging in a world where he doesn’t really belong in the first place, the author finds himself in the middle of a surrealistic liaison that no one can be sure is real, not even him! To make matters worse, the U.S. is gearing up for an invasion of Iraq to the north and everyone is looking at him (the only American in the region) with even greater suspicion. He also finds that there are a number of Iraqis who cannot wait for the U.S. to invade and free them from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein. He finds that in a world of lies, deceit and hatred, there are still people, specifically the people of Oman, who are kind and caring and who have come to consider him a part of their family... ...But is it real, or is it just a dream? It was the legendary traveller Wilfred Thesiger who first introduced Gavin Young to the Marshes of Iraq. Since then Young has been entranced by both the beauty of the Marshes and by the Marsh Arabs who inhabit them, a people whose lifestyle is almost unchanged from that of their predecessors, the Ancient Sumerians. On his return to the Marshes some years later Gavin Young found that the twentieth-century had rudely intruded on this lifestyle and that war was threatening to make the Marsh Arabs existence extinct. Return to the Marshes, first published in 1977, is at once a moving tribute to a unique way of life as well as a love story to a place and its people. 'A superbly written essay which combines warmth of personal tone, a good deal of easy historical scholarship and a talent for vivid description rarely found outside good fiction.' A year after his dramatic release by a multinational military raid, Norman Kember revealed his story behind the controversy of his captivity in Baghdad. Written with honesty and emotion, Norman Kember describes in detail his four month ordeal, during which he was imprisoned in a small room and chained to the two Canadian peace activists, James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden, and the American Tom Fox, who was later killed by his captors. Kember experiences fear, loneliness, boredom, and at one point, contemplated suicide. Yet his wry sense of humour never quite deserts him. The book includes previously unseen notes made by Norman Kember, who kept a journal during his captivity and invented games with his fellow captives. In August 2003, at the age of thirty, Rory Stewart took a taxi from Jordan to Baghdad. A Farsi-speaking British diplomat who had recently completed an epic walk from Turkey to Bangladesh, he was soon appointed deputy governor of Amarah and then Nasiriyah, provinces in the remote, impoverished marsh regions of southern Iraq. He spent the next eleven months negotiating hostage releases, holding elections, and splicing together some semblance of an infrastructure for a population of millions teetering on the brink of civil war. The Prince of the Marshes tells the story of Stewart's year. As a participant he takes us inside the occupation and beyond the Green Zone, introducing us to a colorful cast of Iraqis and revealing the complexity and fragility of a society we struggle to understand. By turns funny and harrowing, moving and incisive, it amounts to a unique portrait of heroism and the tragedy that intervention inevitably courts in the modern age. Matt Damon reteams with his Bourne Supremacy director to create a thriller grounded in contemporary politics: the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) travels across war-torn Iraq, pursuing the intelligence he's been given, but every site indicated comes up empty of WMDs. Investigating the source of the intelligence, he finds himself caught between CIA agent Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson, 28 Days Later) and politician Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine) over the identity of "Magellan," the supposed source. As Miller tracks down an Iraqi general, he ends up further and further afield, facing danger from all sides. It's hard to say which is the greater accomplishment--that Green Zone manages to turn a still-volatile political issue into a propulsive action movie, or that it manages to depict Iraqi people as individuals with a wide range of responses to what's happened to their country. Damon's performance is low-key but effective as Miller tries to maintain some semblance of moral clarity in a circumstance that muddies everything. Also featuring Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) as a compromised journalist and Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner) as an Iraqi civilian who gets dragged into far more than he expected. --Bret FetzerBlu-ray: Company: Universal Studios UK List Price: Amazon Price: $24.92 Used Price: $22.99

Set at the outbreak of the Iraq war in 2003, The Tiger and the Snow is about a Roman poet and lecturer named Attilio (Benigni) who feels compelled to head to Baghdad when he discovers that the woman he loves, Vittoria (Nicoletta Braschi) has been seriously injured during a bomb explosion. Moving heaven and earth, he manages to get to Iraq and finds the hospital where Vittoria has been taken. Unconscious, the woman of his dreams is in need of a drug that will relieve the pressure of the cerebral enema that is killing her. Given that there is nothing immediately available, Attilio goes off into the city in search of the drug - to find only abandoned pharmacies and ruins. Refusing to abandon hope, Attilio must confront the horrors and disasters of war to save the love of his life. A winning blend of comedy and tragedy, The Tiger and the Snow is also a highly charged polemic against the futility of war.Director: Roberto Benigni DVD: Color, DVD, Widescreen, NTSC Company: Arts Alliance Amer (2007-05-08) List Price: $14.95 Amazon Price: $7.04 Used Price: $2.19
