Tro-tros and Potholes is truly a reading adventure, with the Internet playing a key role. At what other time in history could an explorer stay in almost instant touch with people all around the world? During almost four months of traveling, Laura Enridge thrilled friends and family back home with her vivid stories, often written in “stinky internet cafés with sticky keyboards.” Here, her unedited emails are mingled with more detailed memoirs. Together they form a wonderful collection of human stories, written straight from the heart.A keen observer, Enridge takes an interest in almost everyone she meets. Her colourful glimpses into daily life in West African cities and villages are captured on every page of this delightful book. Author: Laura Enridge Kindle Edition: 176 pages Kindle eBook Company: Zera Press (2011-12-23) (2011-12-23) List Price: Amazon Price:
The hilarious story of two brothers, a truckload of batteries, and a brilliant plan to bring light--and new business opportunities--to Ghana At age 47, Whit Alexander, the American co-founder of the Cranium board game, decided to start a new business selling affordable goods and services to low-income villagers in Ghana, West Africa. His brother Max, a journalist, came along to tell the story. Neither of them could have anticipated just how much of an adventure they’d find there. In Ghana, Whit's initial goal is to market a high quality rechargeable AA battery that off-grid villagers could use to power their flashlights and radios, as well as to charge their cell phones. If successful, he planned to grow a larger for-profit business based on those batteries--creating a trusted African brand that would provide life-enhancing products, services, and jobs, without relying on charity. Ghana, however, presents extraordinary challenges, and the brothers wage daily battles against deadly insects, insane driving conditions, unspeakable food, voodoo priests, corrupt officials, counterfeiters, and ethnic rivalries on their way to success. From signing up customers who earn a few dollars a month at most to training employees with no Western-style work experience, the brothers quickly learn that starting a business in Africa requires single-minded focus, a sense of humor, and a lot of patience. Along the way, Whit and Max relive their own childhood, bickering across the African bush and learning a great deal about Africans as well as themselves. Irreverent, hilarious, and ultimately inspiring, Bright Lights, No City challenges accepted notions of charity, shows the power of broadening your horizons, and suggests that there is hope and opportunity in Africa. Praise for Bright Lights, No City: "An affectionate, good-humored and finally inspiring account of one American's determination to make good things happen." "My boss, Bill Gates, coined the phrase 'creative capitalism' to encourage the use of market forces to address the needs of the poor. But my friend, Whit Alexander, moved creative capitalism from ideas to bold practice. Bright Lights, No City will scratch your travel bug, tickle your business brain, and touch your heart." "I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, which helps to prove that what much of the developing world needs is a hand up, not a hand out." "I loved, loved, loved Bright Lights, No City. A tour de force! Bravo. It's perceptive, informative, thoughtful, engaging, funny." "Max Alexander has woven a compassionate and oft-times hilarious tale of the Brothers Alexander's attempt to save the world, one rechargeable battery at a time. If you have any interest in a great story or helping the other 4 billion, read this book, now." "A lyrically written universal testimony to the humanity that binds all people together on this fragile planet, Bright Lights, No City is a deeply moving and funny, can't-put-it-down book." "This book is filled with the passion and relentless pursuit that it takes to make dreams come to life, and reminds you that it takes compassion, luck, and humor to make history. A must read for every entrepreneur." Author: Max Alexander Kindle Edition: 400 pages Kindle eBook Company: Hyperion (2012-07-17) (2012-07-17) List Price: Amazon Price:

With a naive sense of adventure and idealism, Anthony and his wife Laura, a teacher and a vet from Croydon, South London, volunteered with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) in northern Ghana for two years – a country they knew virtually nothing about beforehand.Their experiences were sometimes depressing, sometimes hilarious and always bizarre. Whether losing a sheep's head during a dissection lesson because the students want to "make soup" or hearing from science teachers how Indian footballers were banned by FIFA for using juju magic to trick the opposition, Anthony fondly describes in hilarious detail experiences that are as unpredictable as they are fascinating. Anthony also describes wider truths about West African politics, history, culture and economics; about the corruptions and double standards within the development industry and how Ghanaians perceive the UK in particular and Europe in general. Global issues are highlighted such as Goldman Sachs profiting from the privatisation of Ghanaian gold mines and the family of one of the July 7th London bombers being from the small town of Bolgatanga - a bustling regional capital in the most optimistic of African nations. The personalities of three characters run through this book - individuals that the author now describes as being among his closest friends. Kwesi the smooth-talker with big dreams and ideas. Despite humble beginnings and slender build, he likes to think of himself as a big man. His bravado and courage to improve his situation is inspiring. His quick-buck ideas are endearingly hilarious. Occasionally manipulative, mostly literate and always charming, Kwesi is typical of the rapidly expanding African lower-middle class. Culture is a part-time barber, tomato farmer, laborer, musician, witch doctor and full-time hustler. Culture has named himself in honour of his heritage and, despite not knowing the term ‘pan-Africanist’, sees himself as representing all African people. His worldview is mostly ill informed and stubbornly held. His only child being called ‘Gaddafi’ perfectly summarises his often-surprising opinions. Donatus is a former goat-herder who was beaten by his father for wanting to go to school as a child. Running away from home, Donatus trained as a carpenter and now has a small but successful business. Living in a shared room with his extended family, Donatus is looking for a wife and is learning how to read and write. As a keen guitarist, Anthony joined with Kwesi, Culture and Donatus in their musical group - TangaCulture. Showcasing modernised traditional music, TangaCulture played at weddings, parties and, most importantly, funerals. The group also represented the Upper East Region in a national music competition held in Accra. Whether trying to convince the Regional Government Director for Culture that they are all under twenty-six or playing Michael Jackson on local radio, the trials, hopes and disappointments for TangaCulture trying to break into the Ghanaian music industry make "Spinal Tap" seem like an easy ride. This book paints a picture of an Africa generally ignored by the sensationalist or romanticised media but recognised and loved by all those who have visited this marvellous continent. All money collected through the selling of this e-book will go straight to support the street children of Bolgatanga, Ghana. Having lived for two years in West Africa and two years in Mainland China, this book is my honest assessment of various situations in my life and travels which were happy, sad, angry, confusing, enlightening, spiritual, awesome, amazing and educational, that I encountered while traveling throughout various regions in Ghana, West Africa. My book talks about the economic opportunities available in Africa. I share my networking experiences between African youth and their peers in America. As a single, Muslim, Black woman from America, traveling throughout Africa alone, I am presented with a different picture and different experiences than most non-Black people. Depending on where I travel, I am accepted and perceived differently, as well. As I traveled throughout China I thought, every Chinese American needs to experience this country. Likewise with Africa. African Americans needs to come and bring their children and grandchildren to the Continent. It is so much more than big belly babies and poverty. It is truly something to behold! I hope after reading "At Home! Abroad", you will make arrangements for your own life-altering travel throughout the Motherland. "This very readable book on modern Ghana is not a dry treatise on the economic, social and political conditions of the country, but a journey of discovery in which one meets the people, wonders at the signs of new affluence in the executive houses and expensive German cars driven by sophisticated housewives, travels with the author and his family to their old hometowns, shares the glee of their extended families in seeing them again, gains a personal and moving perspective into the recent past of the indigenous cultures, the poorer farming folk who in some cases still struggle to survive; it is an account of first-hand experience whereby one understands the author's concern to help advance the prospects, not only of the disadvantaged members of the family, but of the country as a whole."-Charles Muller, Diadem BooksAuthor: Robert Peprah-Gyamfi Kindle Edition: 224 pages Kindle eBook Company: iUniverse (2008-01-10) (2008-01-10) List Price: Amazon Price:
Kristin didn’t expect more than a brief distraction from the lingering feelings she had for her ex-husband, when she decided to take her first trip to Ghana. In a slave castle on the Gulf of Guinea, she unexpectedly found herself face-to-face with the indisputable link between the Diaspora and Mother Africa. She walked along the same passageway that countless captives had been forced to walk for centuries before being prodded onto ships that took them across the Middle Passage. She could feel the spirits of the millions who had passed through the fort –possibly her own ancestors!Back home in the nation’s capital, she was inspired by the ‘Skegee Spirit of her Alabama hometown to reach out to the "underbelly" of black America – to those whose ancestors lost their footing during the slave experience and never recovered. She called on roll models from her childhood in Tuskegee – on the courage and creativity of Lewis Adams, Booker T. Washington, Rosa Parks, and George Washington Carver. They inspired her to commit to searching for a means of helping the underbelly out of their stagnation - away from the legacy they were left by their traumatized ancestors. The enticements of her former husband and the mysterious attachment she had to his daughter threatened to lock Kristin in her past forever. How could she possibly forget the love she and Winston shared as students in Tuskegee? The old school music always took her back to the "pride of the swift growing South." It forced her to remember the strength of their love in the quaint college town – from their first date under the “wine tree" until it was finally buried under the pace of their new life in Washington. When an unexpected physical challenge broke the spell, Kristin was finally propelled toward her destiny. She always knew the effort required to reunite the Diaspora in America with the Mother Africa would equate to fitting a square peg into a round hole. The advantages to both sides of the ocean were clearly staggering, but could it be done? Could Kristin to do the impossible and lead the way home? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Return of the African Diaspora is a rich tale of often-undiscussed history that introduces a different approach to examining slavery in America, and the evolution of African-Americans. It looks at the origin of racism and its purpose, "color" within the black community, and the novel calls attention to individuals who were so traumatized by their slave experience that they had little to pass on to their descendents. It is a story of forgiveness and of healing for relationships of all kind, but especially the relationship between the Diaspora in America and Africa. This work of realistic fiction is woven around a blended family whose lives are entangled by misplaced passion, painful secrets, and a mystical love that hangs in the balance. Return of the African Diaspora is the first of a 2-part series.
