Backroads of Arizona: Your Guide to Arizona's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures
The face of Arizona has changed dramatically over the centuries-but for those who know where to look, the coyote still howls, waterfalls still tumble into deep red rock canyons, and some of nature's finest handiwork is still to be seen along the backroads and byways of the state. For the open-road adventurer or the armchair tourist, Backroads of Arizona is the ideal guide to the state where antelope still roam, cowboys still ride the range, and mail is still delivered by mule train. Jim Hinckley's informative text and Kerrick James' brilliant color photography reveal the Grand Canyon State as more than just desert and towering saguaros: It is a powerful land of compelling variety where a mere sixty-mile drive can transport you from scorching sands to dense evergreen stands where deer and elk roam. Continuing on Voyageur Press’ successful travel series, Backroads of Arizona takes you on more than twenty trips to the state’s most notable and underappreciated sites. The book covers Arizona’s plethora of awe-inspiring natural areas and national parks as well as its many historic sites, including Native American Pueblos and ancient ruins, ghost towns and vestiges of the Old West, and more. It is a fitting celebration of one of the most scenic states in the country.

Flagstaff to Sedona through Oak Creek Canyon: A Roadside Nature of Arizona Travel Guide for U.S. Highway 89A Highway 89A drops off the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, through a fascinating landscape of ancient lava flows and giant sandstone spires and cliffs. The plant and animal life along the drive is as bizarre as it is beautiful. As the elevation decreases along the drive, conifer forests give way to diverse chaparral, woodland, and desert environments lined by the verdant streamside forests of Oak Creek. Each of these ecosystems are home to unique plants and animals including pig-like javelina and agave (the plant tequila is made from) in the desert, and reptile-hunting black hawks and giant Arizona sycamore trees along Oak Creek. Wildlife watching, especially birding, is exceptional in Oak Creek Canyon. Bring your binoculars!

About Roadside Nature Travel Guides

Roadside Nature is a new, different style of natural history travel guide that aims to cover the most spectacular scenic drives on the planet as well as some less popular routes that offer wilder, more intimate outdoor experiences for independent-minded travelers. Most nature guides cover identification of birds, reptiles, plants, rocks, and so on, or they focus on a particular environment, like the Sonoran Desert or the Everglades. Travel guides tend to concentrate on eating, sleeping, shopping, and city-based cultural and natural attractions.

Roadside Nature approaches nature-based travel a little differently; they describe the most prominent and fascinating natural features (whether they are geologic, avian, meteorological, or furry) along a specific travel path. Like other travel guides, Roadside Nature Travel Guides also cover the topics of eating and sleeping, but with the independent, outdoor-oriented traveler in mind, focusing mostly on quiet picnic spots and out of the way places to camp on public lands.

The biggest difference between a Roadside Nature Travel Guide and other guides is that they are written by local naturalists who are intimately familiar with their environments and passionate about sharing their knowledge with others. This hand-crafted approach lets you bring along the experience and knowledge of a local guide without cramping the independence or discovery that should be a part of every good trip.

Early Phoenix (Images of America: Arizona) Like the mythical bird it is named after, Phoenix rose from the desert heat to become a prosperous and vital city. Settled on the lands of the ancient Hohokam Indians, Phoenix began as an agricultural community in the 1860s. It was appointed county seat of Maricopa County in 1871 and territorial capital in 1889. By 1900, town boosters were calling Phoenix an Oasis in the Desert and the Denver of the Southwest. By 1920, Phoenix was on its way to being a metropolitan city with a population of 29,053 and sporting an eight-story skyscraper. Many farsighted individuals documented this development through photographs, allowing today's residents to see the community's amazing growth from small town to big city.

The Arizona Diary of Lily Frémont, 1878-1881 Well traveled and gently reared, Elizabeth (Lily) Benton Frémont found herself heading for the rough-and-tumble West when her father, John C. Frémont, was named governor of Arizona Territory. In his shadow and that of her grandfather, U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, her life on the frontier would have gone largely unremarked but for one thing: Lily kept a diary. Here, in rich detail, her day-by-day narrative and the editor's annotations bring to life Arizona's territorial capital of Prescott more than one hundred years ago. Lily gives us firsthand accounts of the operation of territorial government; of pressure from Anglo settlers to dispossess Pima Indians from their land; and of efforts by the governor and the army to deal with Indian scares. Here also, underlying her words, are insights into the dynamics of a close-knit Victorian family, shaping the life of an intelligent, educated single woman. As unofficial secretary for her father, Lily was well placed to observe and record an almost constant stream of visitors to the governor's home and office. Observe and record, she did. Her diary is filled with unvarnished images of personalities such as the Goldwaters, General O. B. Willcox, Moses Sherman, Judge Charles Silent, and a host of lesser citizens, politicians, and army officers. Lily's anecdotes vividly re-create the periodic personality clashes that polarized society (and one full-fledged scandal), the ever-present danger of fire, religious practices (particularly a burial service conducted in Hebrew), and attitudes toward Native Americans and Chinese. On a more personal level, the reader will find intimate accounts of John Frémont's obsession with mining promotion, his complicated business dealings with Judge Silent, and his attempts to recoup his family's sagging fortune. Here especially, Lily outlines a telling profile of her father, a man roundly castigated then and now as a carpetbagger less interested in promoting Arizona's interests than his own. For students of western history, Lily Frémont's diary provides a wealth of fresh information on frontier politics, mining, army life, social customs, and ethnicity. For all readers, her words from a century ago offer new perspectives on the winning of the West as well as fascinating glimpses of a world that once was and is no more.

Doing What the Day Brought: An Oral History of Arizona Women "I've seen many changes during the years," says Irene Bishop, "from horse and buggy to automobiles and planes, from palm leaf fans to refrigeration. . . . They talk about the good old days but I do not want to go back. I'd like to go back about twenty years, but not beyond that. Life was too hard." Drawing on interviews with twenty-nine individuals, Doing What the Day Brought examines the everyday lives of women from the late nineteenth century to the present day and demonstrates the role they have played in shaping the modern Arizona community. Focusing on "ordinary" women, the book crosses race, ethnic, religious, economic, and marital lines to include Arizona women from diverse backgrounds. Rather than simply editing each woman's words, Rothschild and Hronek have analyzed these oral histories for common themes and differences and have woven portions into a narrative that gives context to the individual lives. The resulting life-course format moves naturally from childhood to home life, community service, and participation in the work force, and concludes with reflections on changes witnessed in the lifetimes of these women. For the women whose lives are presented here, it may have been common to gather dead saguaro cactus ribs to make outdoor fires to boil laundry water, or to give birth on a dirt floor. Their stories capture not only changes in a state where history has overlooked the role of women, but the changing roles of American women over the course of this century.

The Death of Josseline: Immigration Stories from the Arizona Borderlands Dispatches from Arizona—the front line of a massive human migration—including the voices of migrants, Border Patrol, ranchers, activists, and others

For the last decade, Margaret Regan has reported on the escalating chaos along the Arizona-Mexico border, ground zero for immigration since 2000. Undocumented migrants cross into Arizona in overwhelming numbers, a state whose anti-immigrant laws are the most stringent in the nation. And Arizona has the highest number of migrant deaths. Fourteen-year-old Josseline, a young girl from El Salvador who was left to die alone on the migrant trail, was just one of thousands to perish in its deserts and mountains.

With a sweeping perspective and vivid on-the-ground reportage, Regan tells the stories of the people caught up in this international tragedy. Traveling back and forth across the border, she visits migrants stranded in Mexican shelters and rides shotgun with Border Patrol agents in Arizona, hiking with them for hours in the scorching desert; she camps out in the thorny wilderness with No More Deaths activists and meets with angry ranchers and vigilantes. Using Arizona as a microcosm, Regan explores a host of urgent issues: the border militarization that threatens the rights of U.S. citizens, the environmental damage wrought by the border wall, the desperation that compels migrants to come north, and the human tragedy of the unidentified dead in Arizona’s morgues.

Irish Arizona, AZ (IMG) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing)) The Irish greatly contributed to the creation of the territory and state of Arizona due to their enterprising personalities and persistence in a difficult environment. The first documented Irishman in Arizona was Hugo OÂ’Conor, who established the Presidio of Tucson for the Spanish government in 1775. Sheriff Bucky OÂ’Neal of Yavapai County and the Brophy and Riordan families left their mark on ArizonaÂ’s landscape as well as the Irish-born Sisters of Mercy, who established St. JosephÂ’s Hospital in Phoenix. This photographic history identifies famous and lesser-known Arizona settlers who were ranchers, merchants, miners, lawmen, explorers, soldiers, and healers. Irish Arizona offers a unique perspective on an ethnic group not typically associated with the American Southwest.

American Journey Vol. 1 - Dreaming Arizona Now also available in HD DVD format, re-mastered with hi-rez image processing and DaVinci color correction, optimized for 1080i HD.

Escape the ordinary. Soar like an eagle across the paradise of the Southwest.

This Music Scenic Relaxation DVD transports you into a world of spectacular vistas of extraordinary beauty.

A symphony of musical themes and perpetual motion, this DVD lets you experience the sensation of helicopter flight, boat ride and road trip.

From LAKE POWELL, to MONUMENT VALLEY, across the GRAND CANYON, to SEDONA, JEROME, PRESCOTT, and beyond.

"Dreaming Arizona" begins with a boat ride through a narrow canyon, set to Native American drum beats and chants. From the shallow waters of the canyon, we rise into the air and soar across the Colorado River, while the music swells to full orchestration of up-tempo New Age Native American music.

In the alternate Music Selection menu, "Dreaming Arizona" begins with a 50-piece string orchestra playing a dramatic cinema-style theme, as the camera soars above the towering spires of Monument Valley.

You choose the music that suits your mood.

Music Selections:

NEW AGE-NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC

CINEMATIC ORCHESTRAL-SYMPHONIC MUSIC

Two complete movies, each 25 minutes long, offer the viewer two distinct visual interpretations of two very different music styles.

The New Age Native American music features the legendary Brulé ("The Native American Janni") on keyboard and Nicole LaRoche on flute. This music blends traditional Native American instruments with the up-tempo beat and sound of contemporary instrumental music.

The Cinematic Orchestral soundtrack features a full orchestra with suspenseful, dramatic, sweeping and celebratory themes.

Filmed in High Definition, this widescreen presentation was produced exclusively for DVD release. Unlike many titles in this product category, "Dreaming Arizona" does not use recycled stock footage.

Bonus Features include a "Map Movie", juxtaposing animated maps with clips from the movie. You will know exactly where every sequence was filmed. Includes slideshow about the history of places visited.

Pat Tillman Biography : Football Player Arizona Cardinals Killed in Afghanistan Patrick Daniel Tillman for many is the embodiment of America's patriotic spirit. Turning his back on a lucrative, successful, and hard won professional football career, Tillman answered the call to duty in the wake of 9/11. He and his brother joined the Army, their goal the elite Rangers fighting corps. It was just weeks after Pat married his high school sweetheart, Marie Ugenti. After 28 weeks of training, he was sent to Afghanistan as part of Operation Mountain Storm. The operation's objective was to disrupt and destroy the infrastructure of the al-Qaida terrorist organization and ultimately find Osama bin Laden. On April 22, 2004, Tillman's platoon was ambushed in the early evening near Khost in a mountainous region near the Pakistan border. It was announced that he was killed by the enemy after his heroic leadership helped to move a split section of his platoon to safety but five weeks later, the Army gave a different story, saying he died by probable friendly fire. Shortly after his death, Tillman was promoted from specialist to corporal and awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart. An estimated 3,500 attended a May 3 memorial service in San Jose, one of many tributes to Tillman. "Pat's best service to his country was to remind us all what courage really looks like," Arizona Senator John McCain told the crowd, "and that the purpose of all good courage is love

Arizona: A History Thomas E. Sheridan has spent a lifetime in Arizona, "living off it and seeking refuge from it." He knows firsthand its canyons, forests, and deserts; he has seen its cities exploding with new growth; and, like many other people, he sometimes fears for its future.

In this book, Sheridan sets forth new ideas about what a history should be. Arizona: A History explores the ways in which Native Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos have inhabited and exploited Arizona from the pursuit of the Naco mammoth 11,000 years ago to the financial adventurism of Charles Keating and others today. It also examines how perceptions of Arizona have changed, creating new constituencies of tourists, environmentalists, and outside business interests to challenge the dominance of ranchers, mining companies, and farmers who used to control the state. Sheridan emphasizes the crucial role of the federal government in Arizona's development throughout the book.

As Sheridan writes about the past, his eyes are on the inevitable change and compromise of the present and future. He balances the gains and losses as global forces interact more and more with local cultural and environmental factors.

Roadside History of Arizona (Roadside History Series) Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman visited Arizona in the summer of 1880. A promoter made the mistake of asking him what he thought of the place. Too damn hot and dry, Sherman declared. All she needs, the promoter said soothingly, is less heat, more water, and a few good citizens. Hunh, Sherman said. That s all hell needs. (From Roadside History of Arizona, The last of the lower forty-eight to gain statehood in 1912, Arizona now tops lists of the best places to live and visit. For the history behind that reversal, join Arizona s official state historian and beloved ranconteur Marshall Trimble on the state s highways and byways. Along the way meet Fathers Eusebio Kino and Francisco Garces, Non-Assessable Smith, Ned Beale and his camels, Nellie Bush and her steamboats, Great Western Sarah Bowman, and the Navajo code talkers. Find out why Why s called Why; where Arizona s Civil War battlefields are; what happens at the Zuni River Reservation, where no Zuni live; and the possible whereabouts of the Lost Six-Shooter Mine. From Fredonia to Naco, Oatman to Show Low, Ganado to the London Bridge, visitors, newcomers, and old-timers alike will delight in this classic of history and travel, originally published in 1986, now updated, expanded, and redesigned.

Shadows at Dawn: An Apache Massacre and the Violence of History (The Penguin History of American Life) A masterful reconstruction of one of the worst Indian massacres in American history

In April 1871, a group of Americans, Mexicans, and Tohono O'odham Indians surrounded an Apache village at dawn and murdered nearly 150 men, women, and children in their sleep. In the past century the attack, which came to be known as the Camp Grant Massacre, has largely faded from memory. Now, drawing on oral histories, contemporary newspaper reports, and the participants' own accounts, prize-winning author Karl Jacoby brings this perplexing incident and tumultuous era to life to paint a sweeping panorama of the American Southwest-a world far more complex, diverse, and morally ambiguous than the traditional portrayals of the Old West.

Arizona: A History, Revised Edition (Southwest Center Series)

Hailed as a model state history thanks to Thomas E. Sheridan's thoughtful analysis and lively interpretation of the people and events shaping the Grand Canyon State, Arizona has become a standard in the field. Now, just in time for Arizona's centennial, Sheridan has revised and expanded this already top-tier state history to incorporate events and changes that have taken place in recent years. Addressing contemporary issues like land use, water rights, dramatic population increases, suburban sprawl, and the US-Mexico border, the new material makes the book more essential than ever. It successfully places the forty-eighth state's history within the context of national and global events. No other book on Arizona history is as integrative or comprehensive.

From stone spear points more than 10,000 years old to the boom and bust of the housing market in the first decade of this century, Arizona: A History explores the ways in which Native Americans, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, and Anglos have inhabited and exploited Arizona. Sheridan, a life-long resident of the state, puts forth new ideas about what a history should be, embracing a holistic view of the region and shattering the artificial line between prehistory and history. Other works on Arizona's history focus on government, business, or natural resources, but this is the only book to meld the ethnic and cultural complexities of the state's history into the main flow of the story.

A must read for anyone interested in Arizona's past or present, this extensive revision of the classic work will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers alike.
