An ecosystem in freefall, a shrinking water supply for cities and agriculture, an antiquated network of failure-prone levees--this is the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the major hub of California's water system. Written by a team of independent water experts, this analysis of the latest data evaluates proposed solutions to the Delta's myriad problems. Through in-depth economic and ecological analysis, the authors find that the current policy of channeling water exports through the Delta is not sustainable for any interest. Employing a peripheral canal-conveying water around the Delta instead of through it--as part of a larger habitat and water management plan appears to be the best strategy to maintain both a high-quality water supply and at the same time improve conditions for native fish and wildlife. This important assessment includes integrated analysis of long term ecosystem and water management options and demonstrates how issues such as climate change and sustainability will shape the future. Published in cooperation with the Public Policy Institute of California Author: Jay Lund, Ellen Hanak, William Fleenor, Willaim Bennett, Richard Howitt, Jeffrey Mount, Peter Moyle Hardcover: 256 pages Company: University of California Press (2010-02-02) ISBN: 0520261976 List Price: $39.95 Amazon Price: $33.99 Used Price: $26.00

The California Gold Rush captured the get-rich dreams of people around the world more completely than almost any event in American history. This catalog, published in celebration of the sesquicentennial of the 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, shows the vitality of the arts in the Golden State during the latter nineteenth century and documents the dramatic impact of the Gold Rush on the American imagination.Among the throngs of gold-seekers in California were artists, many self-taught, others formally trained, and their arrival produced an outpouring of artistic works that provide insights into Gold Rush events, personages, and attitudes. The best-known painting of the Gold Rush era, C.C. Nahl's Sunday Morning in the Mines (1872), was created nearly two decades after gold fever had subsided. By then the Gold Rush's mythic qualities were well established, and new allegories—particularly the American belief in the rewards of hard work and enterprise—can be seen on Nahl's canvas. Other works added to the image of California as a destination for ambitious dreamers, an image that prevails to this day. In bringing together a range of art and archival material such as artists' diaries and contemporary newspaper articles, The Art of the Gold Rush broadens our understanding of American culture during a memorable period in the nation's history.Author: Janice T. Sacramento. Capital of California and home to a half million people and hundreds of symbols and images from an ancient past. These are the same symbols that have been part of the framework of the human psyche for thousands of years. While contemporary man of the 21st century may think that they are simply decorative manifestations of a by-gone era, they represent so much more. They represent the fears, dreams, ideas, beliefs and struggles that humankind has endured since we began to walk upright. This book will survey many of the icons that still reside alongside modern man in Sacramento and will present them in a broader context both in the context of ancient history and folklore as well as a meaning that is suitable for our contemporary times. The locations of these images are also given so that the reader may seek them out at leisure. Gary R. Varner has authored numerous books on symbolism, folklore, mythology and Native American culture.Author: Gary R. Varner Kindle Edition: Kindle eBook Company: OakChylde Publlications/Lulu Press Inc. This updated version includes improved formatting and location information. U.S. Highway 40, and now Interstate 80 which replaced it, is the most traveled artery between the Eastern United States and central California. The highway hurdles the sheer, rocky wall of the Sierra Nevada into the valley that stretches to the Golden Gate. From the Great American Basin, it climbs to the granite heights of Donner Pass, traverses the boulder-piled Yuba River bottoms, coasts toboggan-like through forests and along river gorges offering hazy vistas of mountain ranges. It passes the half-ruined mining camps of the gold country and the titanic upheavals of the hydraulic workings. In the western foothills, where orchards appear in forest clearings, it wriggles between rolling evergreen knolls, then strikes across the great Sacramento Valley, and crosses the low Coast Range to San Francisco. The focus of the Arrest Policies grant to Sacramento County, California, was theestablishment of a Domestic Violence Home Court to handle all preliminary non-evidentiary matters in domestic violence misdemeanor and felony cases. All other non-domestic violence charges against a defendant in Home Court are assigned to this court. To support this change in how domestic violence cases are handled in the county, the prosecutor's special Domestic Violence Unit for felony cases was enhanced to permit handling of misdemeanor cases and all domestic violence felony cases. A third initiative was to fund a special probation unit that would provide intensive supervision for the most "serious" domestic violence probationers. Although the original grant also provided funding for the public defender's office, this was eliminated in the renewal grant.
