Australian Football: Steps to Success (Second Edition)

Australian Football: Steps to Success provides the essential skills players and coaches need to master the game and build successful teams. This book contains comprehensive instruction on the techniques and tactics that have helped top player Andrew McLeod become a two-time Norm Smith medallist and three-time All Australian. McLeod and football coach and teacher Trevor Jaques draw on years of experience to help you prepare for and play the game.

From basic ball handling to more challenging ruckwork, Australian Football: Steps to Success provides full technical guidance. Carefully selected drills speed the learning process and help monitor progress. You then apply those skills on the field with the tactical approaches essential to commanding every facet of the game. The final training guidelines ensure that practice sessions are varied, efficient, and fun while physically preparing players to execute the skills and withstand the rigors of one of the most challenging team sports.

Immortals: Football People and the Evolution of Australian Rules Football Australian Rules Football fanatic and Melbourne academic Lionel Frost has written this fascinating history of the sport through the careers of some of the greats. He shows how AFL (Australian Football League) has developed from an amateur, local sport to the professional, national industry that it is today. It explores the ways in which the lives and careers of players, coaches and administrators were shaped by the times in which they lived, and how their responses to challenges and opportunities in turn shaped the development of the game. In a broader sense, it is a series of stories about Australians, and about life in Australia, that all Australians will be able to relate to. Based on new research, and covering all states in which Australian Rules is the major code, the book features the careers of people such as Norm and Len Smith, John Kennedy, Jack Oatey, through to modern ?gures such as Tim Watson and Jason Akermanis. All of the living subjects, and in many cases the families of those who are deceased, have co-operated fully in the research and provided unpublished source material such as letters and notebooks. Foreword by Ron Barassi.

Richo
Matthew Richardson, known as Richo, retired in 2009 as the most popular player in the AFL. Why was that? The careers of other great players like Nathan Buckley and Michael Voss amount to a sort of sporting perfection. Richo's career didn't. He was fallible. His kicking was flawed and he had an inability to hide his feelings on the ground, but in other respects he was extraordinarily gifted.  He was one of the best marks in the competition and it is said he could have run for Australia. Richo is essentially an account of the last two years of his football life with flashbacks that trace the outline of his long career.  In the process we discover a man who is worldly and much–traveled, who has a deep love of music, and who thinks and uses words in a novel way.

A Devilish Pastime: A History of Football in all its Forms This is a look at the rich, fascinating history of the best-known varieties of football: soccer, rugby union, rugby league, American and Canadian football, Gaelic football and Australian Rules; along with some of their lesser-known relations. It traces the origins of the football-like games of the distant past, through to the growth of the modern, mass-audience sports that have become such a big part of modern life.

A Devilish Pastime – whose title comes from a 16th-century Puritan pamphlet that counted football among the activities that were supposedly leading the English people into sin – examines the evolution of the rules, tactics, playing styles and cultures of these sports.

It also looks at their common roots, how they have become popular in various parts of the world and different sections of society, and the people who have helped to make all this happen. As well as being a sporting history, it touches on the social, cultural and political histories of the countries where these sports have developed, and how they relate to national and class identities.

Akermanis Off the Leash Say what you like about Jason Akermanis - footballer, showman, show-off, troublemaker - there's no denying that he's made an impression in his 15 years as an AFL star player. Now, after more than 300 games, three Premierships and a Brownlow Medal, the curtain has come down on his extraordinary career. No longer restrained by contractual obligations and free to speak at last, Aker looks at a stellar sporting career, including details of Aker's falling out with Leigh Matthews, his move to the Western Bulldogs, run-ins with fellow players, and his thoughts on the game. Interwoven throughout is the personal story of finding and reconciling with his biological father - a married man with a family of his own who lived next door. Told with trademark honesty and passion, this tell-all memoir is a must-have for all footy fans.

Straight Shooter Matthew Lloyd at his peak was a goal kicking machine in an era where the power forward was fading from the game. A five-time all Australian, he topped the AFL goal kicking three times in his 270 game career and kicked the ton twice, his first in the Essendon Premiership season of 2000. Born into a football family, it was clear early in his career that he had the ability to surpass his father John's 29 games with Carlton. For a while it looked he would head to Carton as well, but Essendon conjured up a complex deal to secure the talented 16-year-old in the 1994 pre-season draft. Brothers Simon and Brad each played football too and are now involved with the Fremantle Football Club, and sister Kylie works on The Footy Show at Channel 9. His mother Bev, even met his father at the football. Sport, and in particular football, was and remains in the blood. This book is the story of a kid driven by a fear of failure to climb the highest peaks in football. Of a young footballer who taught himself a process to become the most accurate shot for goal in the AFL after a tirade from one his coaches. It is how a boy with natural ability became the captain of the Essendon Football Club, a premiership player and a life member of the AFL. And now it is about the transformation into devoted father and a multi-media expert on AFL when it looked like from the outside his career was cut short before its time; of a testy relationship with his final coach and the bone crunching hit that saw him finish his time as a player on suspension. It looks at how he considered a future with other clubs before deciding to retire on his terms. Above all, it is a brutally honest account of an astonishing career from a man who is a straight shooter in more ways than one.

Tigers and Devils Football, friends, and film are the most important parts of Simon Murray's life, likely in that order. Despite being lonely, Simon is cautious about looking for more, and his best friends despair of him ever finding that special someone to share his life. Against his will, they drag him to a party, where Simon barges into a football conversation and ends up defending the honour of star forward Declan Tyler -- unaware that the athlete is present and listening.

Like his entire family, Simon revels in living in Melbourne, Victoria, the home of Australian Rules football and mecca for serious fans. There, players are deemed gods and treated as such – until they do something to cause them to fall out of public favour. Declan is suffering a horrendous year of injuries, and the public is taking him to task for it, so Simon's support is a bright spot in his struggles. In that first awkward meeting, neither man has any idea they will change each other's lives forever.

As Simon and Declan fumble toward building a relationship together, there is yet another obstacle in their way: keeping Declan's homosexuality a secret amidst the intrusion of well-meaning friends and an increasingly suspicious media. They realise that nothing remains hidden forever… and they know the situation will only become more complicated when Declan's private life is revealed. Declan will be forced to make some tough choices that may result in losing either the career he loves or the man he wants. And Simon has never been known to make things easy – for himself or for others.

All Bets Are Off When he was eight years old, David Schwarz saw his father killed in front of him in a domestic dispute gone wrong. Despite going on to become a star footballplayer, playing 11 seasons with the Melbourne Football Club, the effect of this early shocking experience would shadow him throughout his successful sporting career. This is David Schwarz's honest and courageous story, told in full for the first time. Starting with the trauma of losing his father and riding the highs and lowsof his football career, David tells the tale of his eventual undoing - a gambling addiction that saw him lose every dollar he'd ever earned and took him to the brink of personal and professional destruction. But it is also a tale of redemption, as David recounts the moment he turned his life around, and the path of recovery since.

On his mother's side, he is descended from a black American sailor who arrived in Sydney in 1840. The average AFL career lasts three years. Richo's lasted 17 seasons. In that time, the general public got to appreciate his great bravery and his passion for both the game and his club. They also learned that, off the field, he was a humble, polite man who was always last on to the team bus because he was signing autographs."Richo", the book, is essentially an account of the last two years of his football life with flashbacks that trace the outline of his long career. In the process, the author, Martin Flanagan, discovers a man who is worldly and much-travelled, who has a deep love of music and who thinks and uses words in a novel way. Richo is an Australian original. The book climaxes with the 2008 season when Richo, in what was seen as a prelude to his delisting, was taken from the key forward position he had dominated for nearly two decades and put on a wing. At age 33, he responded by almost winning the Brownlow medal.

Brief Definition of Field Football:
Field Football is an exciting new football kicking and throwing skills sport. Field Football combines features of football and golf. Field Football can be played as an individual, in groups, or with teams.
Field Football is a game of kicking, pooch punting, dropkicking, advancing and throwing a football at either pylon clusters of four cones or the uprights. The object of the game is to outscore opponents before time expires. The play field is comprised of five key items. The main item is a portable football goal post. The next three items are the four cone clusters of pylons. The fifth item is the kicking tee which determines where game play begins. The object of the game is to start at the tee with five footballs. Players throw for the pylon cones in order before attempting the uprights. In Team rules players spread pylon cones out to form a square area that serves as an endzone where the ball is advanced before they attempt the uprights for points. There are no bounds to keep up with! Players are either aiming for target pylon cones in individual play or are driving the ball to three sets of four mini-endzones before attempting the uprights. The goal is to outscore the opponent before the end of fifteen minutes. This exciting new lawn game can be enjoyed at home with friends and family or league play. Taking Nothing For Granted From Chronic Fatigue to the MCG Kicking goals, winning premierships - Alastair Lynch did it all. But his greatest victory was beating chronic fatigue syndrome. At the prime of his AFL career, Alastair Lynch was sleeping 18 hours a day. He didn't know what was wrong with him. He couldn't play football. Worse, he thought he might never play again. But Alastair discovered that he had chronic fatigue syndrome, a condition suffered by over 120 000 Australians. Alastair Lynch gave CFS sufferers a reason to believe. He did play football again - magnificently so. And in September 2004 he retired as one of the all-time greats. A 300-game triple premiership player with the Brisbane Lions, a member of the Fitzroy and Tasmanian Team of the Century, Alastair Lynch is a true champion. This is the story of Alastair's fight, not just to play football but to be able to get out of bed every day and do what normal people do. And, more importantly, to be able to enjoy life with his family, and to remember never, ever, to take his health for granted again.
