Amazon.com Books: personal data privacy
In recent years, with rapidly advancing technology and a more globalized culture, the importance of privacy has become paramount. The legal protection of privacy against these new technological threats is a major discussion point in Europe as well as in the United States. Personal Data Privacy and Protection in a Surveillance Era: Technologies and Practices spans a number of interdependent and emerging topics in the area of legal protection of privacy and technology. This book explores the new threats that cyberspace poses to the privacy of individuals, as well as the threats that surveillance technologies generate in public spaces and in digital communication. It examines media practices and privacy frameworks in the fields of copyright, digital management and genetic information. New models of data protection are proposed along with their advantages and disadvantages. Author: Christina Akrivopoulou Hardcover: 350 pages Company: IGI Global (2010-11-30) ISBN: 1609600835 List Price: $180.00 Amazon Price: $159.90 Used Price: $112.18
Much of what constitutes Big Data is information about us. Through our online activities, we leave an easy-to-follow trail of digital footprints that reveal who we are, what we buy, where we go, and much more. This eye-opening book explores the raging privacy debate over the use of personal data, with one undeniable conclusion: once data's been collected, we have absolutely no control over who uses it or how it is used. Personal data is the hottest commodity on the market today—truly more valuable than gold. We are the asset that every company, industry, non-profit, and government wants. Privacy and Big Data introduces you to the players in the personal data game, and explains the stark differences in how the U.S., Europe, and the rest of the world approach the privacy issue. You'll learn about: Collectors: social networking titans that collect, share, and sell user data Users: marketing organizations, government agencies, and many others Data markets: companies that aggregate and sell datasets to anyone Regulators: governments with one policy for commercial data use, and another for providing securityAuthor: Terence Craig, Mary E. Ludloff Paperback: 108 pages Company: O'Reilly Media (2011-09-29) ISBN: 1449305008 List Price: $19.99 Amazon Price: $16.50 Used Price: $19.94
The United States is not a police state, but Congress is subject to special interest lobbying that can result in abusive private sector commercial practices that leave a lot to be desired for their transparency and accountability. It is illegal, for example, to data-mine personal data files held by government agencies, schools and universities, or medical facilities for commercial purposes. It is illegal to collect and publish defamatory gossip and hearsay about private citizens. At the same time, it is legal to oblige Americans to “waive” their rights to privacy, or to sue for defamation by anonymous third-parties, in order to apply for employment or for essential services. As a result, the personal data collection industry can collect secret proprietary files on every man, woman, and teenager in the United States—affecting essentially all applications for employment, credit, housing, public utilities, telephone and mobile phone service, internet access, and even cable TV connection. The law does require “notice and consent” whenever these “waivers” are called for in employment applications. But those that rely on them have learned to use deceptive methods to avoid drawing the attention of applicants to the consequences of their “waivers.” Recent law dispenses even with the “notice and consent” requirement for a consumer reporting agency to communicate with an employer with respect to suspected misconduct relating to employment or compliance with any law or regulation. The author questions the validity of any such “waivers,” and seeks to alert Americans to the need to protect these fundamental rights. Author: Orlan Lee Hardcover: 306 pages Company: Lexington Books (2012-03-22) ISBN: 0739167995 List Price: $70.00 Amazon Price: $66.00 Used Price: $79.44
Personal data, at least in the European legal lexicon, is not a conventional object of property rights. Yet, regardless of the actual legal circumstances, lively markets in personal data have become a reality. The so-called information industry routinely collects and deals in databases containing personal details of people as both citizens and consumers, and appears to regard this data as its property. Moreover, individuals also treat data pertaining to them as "their own", and habitually disclose personal data in exchange for money, goods, services, and online "social" interaction. This important new book defends the ground-breaking proposal to "propertise" personal data. "Propertisation" arguably improves the position of a data subject to exercise control over his/her personal data by creating more effective tools of accountability and monitoring. It can also be used, the author shows, to enforce existing data protection rights as expressed in the EC Data Protection Directive (1995), Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (1945) and Convention No. 108 (1981). This book inquires to what extent the propertisation of personal data is legally possible in Europe, and examines what benefits and limitations would ensue. It provides: ; a systematic understanding of the developments and concerns with regard to personal data; a detailed examination of the main arguments for and against the concept of property in personal data; and a European perspective on property rights in personal data.
The result is a book full of original insights that breaks new ground in addressing the problems of personal data in the European law of data protection and informational privacy. Author: Nadezhda Purtova Hardcover: 328 pages Company: Kluwer Law International (2011-12-13) ISBN: 9041138021 List Price: $150.00 Amazon Price: $138.67 Used Price: $184.07
Passage of the European Data Protection Directive and other national laws have increased the need for companies and other entities to improve their data protection and privacy controls. Clients, stakeholders, and the public are clamoring for it. Klosek introduces the various legal means to protect personal data in the United States and the European Union, targeting her book at American and international businesses that may have difficulty complying with the European Directive. She explains its main elements and practical effects, presents primary components of national privacy laws abroad and in the United States, and gives advice on some steps companies can take to improve the level of protection they afford to the data they possess. Klosek offers a comprehensive review of the American and European systems for providing protection to personal information in the Internet age. She explains the European Data Protection Directive, the national data protection laws of the fifteen countries of the European Union, and the laws and other initiatives for protecting individual personal data. She endeavors to discuss the protection of personal data in general but focuses on, and emphasizes, the protection of personal data within the context of the Internet. In doing so, she provides much useful, fascinating information on the obvious and non-obvious means of collecting and processing personal data through the Internet. Among its unusual features, the book helps United States corporate decision makers assess the effect data protection laws will have in Europe and the U.S., and how companies that are operating web sites that cross international boundaries can ensure they stay in compliance with data protection laws in countries in which their web sites may be accessible. The book is essential reading for corporate compliance executives, corporate communications and other top-level organizational administrators, particularly in Internet industries. Author: Jacqueline Klosek Hardcover: 280 pages Company: Praeger (2000-08-30) ISBN: 156720368X List Price: $119.95 Amazon Price: $119.95 Used Price: $36.85
Effective response to misuse or abusive activity in IT systems requires the capability to detect and understand improper activity. Intrusion Detection Systems observe IT activity, record these observations in audit data, and analyze the collected audit data to detect misuse. Privacy-Respecting Intrusion Detection introduces the concept of technical purpose binding, which restricts the linkability of pseudonyms in audit data to the amount necessary for misuse detection. Also, it limits the recovery of personal data to pseudonyms involved in a detected misuse scenario. The book includes case studies demonstrating this theory, and solutions that are constructively validated by providing algorithms. Author: Ulrich Flegel Paperback: 327 pages Company: Springer (2010-11-19) ISBN: 1441941754 List Price: $119.00 Amazon Price: $95.20 Used Price: $97.50
This handbook deals with the issues of personal data privacy from an international perspective. Although the concept of personal data protection began in Europe in the early 1970s, data protection legislation has been adopted throughout the world in countries such as Australia, Canada, the US and Japan. In Europe there is a wide divergence of policies between members of the EEC, non-EEC members and the new democracies of Eastern Europe. This volume explains these differences, focusing on the abuses of personal data in the developing nations of Latin America, Asia and Africa. The book also includes copies of national and international laws, initiatives and guidelines on personal data protection.

From credit-card purchases to electronic fingerprints, the amount of personal data available to government and business is growing exponentially. All industrial societies face the problem of how to regulate this vast world of information, but their governments have chosen distinctly different solutions. In Protectors of Privacy, Abraham L. Newman details how and why, in contrast to the United States, the nations of the European Union adopted comprehensive data privacy for both the public and the private sectors, enforceable by independent regulatory agencies known as data privacy authorities. Despite U.S. prominence in data technology, Newman shows, the strict privacy rules of the European Union have been adopted far more broadly across the globe than the self-regulatory approach championed by the United States. This rift has led to a series of trade and security disputes between the United States and the European Union.Based on many interviews with politicians, civil servants, and representatives from business and NGOs, and supplemented with archival sources, statistical analysis, and examples, Protectors of Privacy delineates the two principal types of privacy regimes-comprehensive and limited. The book presents a theory of regulatory development that highlights the role of transgovernmental networks not only in implementing rules but also in actively shaping the political process surrounding policymaking. More broadly, Newman explains how Europe's institutional revolution has created in certain sectors the regulatory capacity that allows it to challenge U.S. dominance in international economic governance.Author: Abraham L. This book originates from an international workshop on personal information held at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, UK, in June 1996. The workshop was organized under the joint sponsorship of the British Medical Association and the Isaac Newton Institute in the context of a six-month research program in computer security, cryptology, and coding theory. The revised workshop papers appearing in this volume reflect a lively interdisciplinary exchange of views and ideas between doctors, lawyers, privacy activists, and the computer security community. The volume gives a representative snapshot not merely of the state of the art of the medical computer security art in various countries, but of the complex interplay between human, political, and technical aspects. Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, electronic databases are compiling information about you. As you surf the Internet, an unprecedented amount of your personal information is being recorded and preserved forever in the digital minds of computers. For each individual, these databases create a profile of activities, interests, and preferences used to investigate backgrounds, check credit, market products, and make a wide variety of decisions affecting our lives. The creation and use of these databases—which Daniel J. Solove calls "digital dossiers"—has thus far gone largely unchecked. In this startling account of new technologies for gathering and using personal data, Solove explains why digital dossiers pose a grave threat to our privacy. Author: Daniel J. WE ARE ADRIFT IN A SEA OF INFORMATION. We need information to make good decisions, to get things done, to learn, and to gain better mastery of the world around us. But we do not always have good control of our information - not even in the "home waters" of an office or on the hard drive of a computer. Instead, information may be controlling us - keeping us from doing the things we need to do, getting us to waste money and precious time. The growth of available information, plus the technologies for its creation, storage, retrieval, distribution and use, is astonishing and sometimes bewildering. Can there be a similar growth in our understanding for how best to manage information and informational tools? This book provides a comprehensive overview of personal information management (PIM) as both a study and a practice of the activities people do and need to be doing so that information can work for them in their daily lives. Introductory chapters of Keeping Found Things Found: The Study and Practice of Personal Information Management provide an overview of PIM and a sense for its many facets. The next chapters look more closely at the essential challenges of PIM, including finding, keeping, organizing, maintaining, managing privacy, and managing information flow. The book also contains chapters on search, email, mobile PIM, web-based support, and other technologies relevant to PIM.
