Show Me Science Environment - Science for a Healthy Planet The Earth's climate has a long history of drastic fluctuation. From ice ages to long periods of warmth, there are natural occurrences such as volcanic eruptions and changes in the Sun's intensity that affect the climate. More recently, there is wide speculation that activities associated with the Industrial revolution have altered the atmosphere and have negatively affected the climate. This program demonstrates how scientists measure, study and research the health of our planet from the atmosphere to the depths of the ocean.

Ice People Unique in the genre of exploration and adventure films, ICE PEOPLE takes you on one of earth's most seductive journeys Antarctica. Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker Anne Aghion spent four months on the ice with modern-day polar explorers, to find out what drives dedicated researchers to leave the world behind in pursuit of science, and to capture the true experience of living and working in this extreme environment. Intense public focus on global warming has turned the shores of Antarctica into a new tourist mecca. But, inland from the penguins and ice floes is a magical Antarctica of volcanoes, boulder-strewn valleys and ominous glaciers. Only a small number of scientific research teams get there, braving severe conditions to learn about our planet s history, and make predictions about our future. ICE PEOPLE heads out into the deep field with noted geologists Allan Ashworth and Adam Lewis, and two undergrad scientists-in-the-making, where they scour across hundreds of miles to find tiny, critical signs of ancient life. As it turns out, the film also witnesses one of the most significant discoveries about climate change in recent Antarctic science: evidence of a green Antarctica over 14 million years old, that disappeared with a sudden shift in the temperature of the continent. The most authentic film about life on the ice since the trailblazing expeditions to Antarctica chronicled nearly a century ago, ICE PEOPLE conveys the vast beauty, the claustrophobia, the excitement and the stillness of an experience set to the rhythm of nature.

Learning Science in Informal Environments Informal science is a burgeoning field that operates across a broad range of venues and envisages learning outcomes for individuals, schools, families, and society. The evidence base that describes informal science, its promise, and effects is informed by a range of disciplines and perspectives, including field-based research, visitor studies, and psychological and anthropological studies of learning.

Learning Science in Informal Environments draws together disparate literatures, synthesizes the state of knowledge, and articulates a common framework for the next generation of research on learning science in informal environments across a life span. Contributors include recognized experts in a range of disciplines--research and evaluation, exhibit designers, program developers, and educators. They also have experience in a range of settings--museums, after-school programs, science and technology centers, media enterprises, aquariums, zoos, state parks, and botanical gardens.

Learning Science in Informal Environments is an invaluable guide for program and exhibit designers, evaluators, staff of science-rich informal learning institutions and community-based organizations, scientists interested in educational outreach, federal science agency education staff, and K-12 science educators.

Living Downstream: An Ecologist's Personal Investigation of Cancer and the Environment
The first edition of Living Downstream—an exquisite blend of precise science and engaging narrative—set a new standard for scientific writing. Poet, biologist, and cancer survivor, Steingraber uses all three kinds of experience to investigate the links between cancer and environmental toxins.

The updated science in this exciting new edition strengthens the case for banning poisons now pervasive in our air, our food, and our bodies. Because synthetic chemicals linked to cancer come mostly from petroleum and coal, Steingraber shows that investing in green energy also helps prevent cancer. Saving the planet becomes a matter of saving ourselves and an issue of human rights. A documentary film based on the book will coincide with publication.

Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry: Activism, Innovation, and the Environment in an Era of Globalizaztion (Urban and Industrial Environments)

In Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry, David Hess examines how
social movements and other forms of activism affect innovation in science,
technology, and industry. Synthesizing and extending work in social studies of
science and technology, social movements, and globalization, Hess explores the
interaction of grassroots environmental action and mainstream industry and offers a
conceptual framework for understanding it.Hess proposes a theory of scientific and
technological change that considers the roles that both industry and grassroots
consumers play in setting the research agenda in science and technology, and he
identifies "alternative pathways" by which social movements can influence scientific
and technological innovation. He analyzes four of these pathways: industrial
opposition movements, organized against targeted technologies (as in the campaign
against nuclear energy); technology- and product-oriented movements, which press for
alternatives (as does the organic food movement); localism, which promotes local
ownership (as in "buy-local" campaigns); and access pathways, which support a more
equitable distribution of resources. Within each pathway, Hess examines reforms in
five different areas: agriculture, energy, waste and manufacturing, infrastructure,
and finance. The book's theoretical argument and empirical evidence demonstrate the
complex pattern of incorporation (of grassroots innovations) and transformation (of
alternative ownership structures and the alternative products themselves) that has
characterized the relationship of industry and activism. Hess's analysis of
alternative pathways to change suggests ways economic organizations could shift to a
more just and sustainable course in the twenty-first century.

Surrounded by Science: Learning Science in Informal Environments Practitioners in informal science settings--museums, after-school programs, science and technology centers, media enterprises, libraries, aquariums, zoos, and botanical gardens--are interested in finding out what learning looks like, how to measure it, and what they can do to ensure that people of all ages, from different backgrounds and cultures, have a positive learning experience.

Surrounded by Science is designed to make that task easier. Based on the National Research Council study Learning Science in Informal Environments, this book is a tool that provides case studies, illustrative examples, and probing questions for practitioners. In short, this book makes valuable research accessible to those working in informal science: educators, museum professionals, university faculty, youth leaders, media specialists, publishers, broadcast journalists, and many others.

Environmental Science: A Global Concern Environmental Science: A Global Concern, Eleventh Edition, is a comprehensive presentation of environmental science for non-science majors which emphasizes critical thinking, environmental responsibility, and global awareness. This book is intended for use in a one- or two-semester course in environmental science, human ecology, or environmental studies at the college or advanced placement high school level.

We have updated data throughout the chapters in this book. Information and examples presented are the most recent available as of the mid-2009. You will find an abundance of specific numbers and current events – details that are difficult to keep up-to-date in a textbook.

The goal of this book is to provide an up-to-date, introductory global view of essential themes in environmental science along with emphasis on details and case studies that will help students process and retain the general principles. Because most students who will use this book are freshman or sophomore non-science majors, the authors make the text readable and accessible without technical jargon or a presumption of prior science background.
