The Logic of Chance: The Nature and Origin of Biological Evolution (FT Press Science)

This is the eBook version of the printed book.

The Logic of Chance offers a reappraisal and a new synthesis of theories, concepts, and hypotheses on the key aspects of the evolution of life on earth in light of comparative genomics and systems biology. The author presents many specific examples from systems and comparative genomic analysis to begin to build a new, much more detailed, complex, and realistic picture of evolution. The book examines a broad range of topics in evolutionary biology including  the inadequacy of natural selection and adaptation as the only or even the main mode of evolution; the key role of horizontal gene transfer in evolution and the consequent overhaul of the Tree of Life concept;  the central, underappreciated evolutionary importance of viruses; the origin of eukaryotes as a result of endosymbiosis; the concomitant origin of cells and viruses on the primordial earth; universal dependences between genomic and molecular-phenomic variables; and the evolving landscape of constraints that shape the evolution of genomes and molecular phenomes.

"Koonin's account of viral and pre-eukaryotic evolution is undoubtedly up-to-date. His "mega views" of evolution (given what was said above) and his cosmological musings, on the other hand, are interesting reading." Summing Up: Recommended

4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"I would recommend this book to those preparing for USMLE Step 1. The chapters are inclusive with useful color pictures and charts. The many sidebars that include clinical correlates and mnemonics further help with retaining information. Valuation in Life Sciences: A Practical Guide

This book is the first complete guide to valuation in life sciences for industry  professionals, investors, and academics. Boris Bogdan and Ralph Villiger introduce the characteristics of drug and medical device development, explain how to translate these into the valuation, and provide valuable industry data. After guiding the reader through the theory of valuation, including discounted cash-flow and real options, the authors demonstrate how to value projects, patents, licences, firms and stocks on real-life examples, even treating complex licence and company structures. Special emphasis is put on the practicability of the proposed methods by including many hands-on examples, without compromising on realistic results. Ralph Villiger and Boris Bogdan have written what is sure to become the industry standard reference for valuation of pharmaceutical and biotechnology projects and companies. At a time when the healthcare industry is placing increasing emphasis on licensing and M&A as a core strategy this book provides a firm understanding of the way in which products and businesses can be valued at all stages of their development.

Dr. Martin Buckland, Chief Business Officer, Astex Therapeutics, Cambridge, UK

The book presents a number of innovative ideas, illustrated with practical examples that should improve decision-making in the drug development process, intellectual property evaluation, licensing and sublicensing. The authors make a persuasive case for the use of advanced techniques and the section on worked-examples should be particularly appealing to practitioners.

Dr. Martin Grossmann, Novartis Pharmaceuticals

There is no doubt that this book will become an essential reference tool for professionals in technology transfer, business developers and biotech companies, as well as the pharmaceutical industry and Life Science investors.

Jean-Pierre Saintouil, Director of Technology Transfer Department, Institut Pasteur, Paris, France

A Science Odyssey: In Search of Ourselves It's all in the genes. Or is it? In Search of Ourselves traces the pendulum swing of psychological theory from nature to nurture and back again. Case studies, classic experiments, and research on the brain blaze this trail of discovery, revealing what we have learned about ourselves and what still remains a riddle. We also see the dark side of our faith in the perfectibility of human nature, as scientific ideas are twisted to fit political agendas. In Search of Ourselves is a story of the lessons learned, as well as the ways which we have learned them. As the century draws to a close, human behavior remains an irresistible frontier.

Highlights include: Jean-Martin Charcot and hysteria. Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis. Shell shock. IQ tests. Eugenics. Scientist-turned-ad-man John B. Watson and the behaviorist movement. Conditioning. B. F. Skinner. Harry Harlow and the power of love and comfort. Frieda Fromm Reichmann and the treatment of schizophrenia at Chestnut Lodge. Mental institutions. Drug therapy. Alzheimer's disease.

The Biological Revolution: 100 Years of Science at Cold Spring Harbor, a 30-minute video documentary providing the nonscientist with a cogent explanation of the origins of the DNA revolution that is now sweeping the country, is invaluable teaching material for junior and senior high school classes. Using Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as a case study, the video shows the parallel development of American science and society, while providing a first-hand account of the development of modern genetics. Through events that have occurred at Cold Spring Harbor, the video documents the quest to understand the nature of the genetic code, beginning with Darwin's theory of evolution and culminating with powerful techniques to precisely manipulate the DNA molecule. Laboratory Director James Watson, who shared the Nobel Prize for elucidating the double-helix structure of DNA, serves as on-site host. He and four other Nobel laureates-Alfred Hershey, Salvador Luria, Barbara McClintock, and Walter Gilbert-lend their own insights on the genetic revolution they helped launch. Viewers are brought up-to-the-minute on how recombinant DNA techniques are being employed in the wars against cancer and world hunger. Included is stunning footage which shows cancer-causing proteins being injected directly into living cells using a needle with a tip 1/100th the diameter of a human hair.
