The Delaware Bay is the second largest and most diverse bay on the East Coast. It has a rich cultural history, has played an important role in the region’s commerce and tourism, and has spectacular and vital natural resources. Birdwatchers gather along its shores to watch the spectacle of thousands of spawning horseshoe crabs, the dense flocks of migrant shorebirds, the fall hawk migration, and the huge migration of monarch butterflies. Life Along the Delaware Bay focuses on the area as an ecosystem, the horseshoe crab as a keystone species within that system, and the crucial role that the bay plays in the migratory ecology of shorebirds. An abundance of horseshoe crabs spawning on the Delaware Bay beaches results in an abundance of eggs brought to the surface, providing a source of high-quality food and bringing hundreds of thousands of shorebirds to the bay to forage in late May and early June. A dramatic decline in horseshoe crabs has resulted in a rapid and dramatic decline in birds, particularly the red knot. This decline has sounded an alarm throughout the world, prompting a host of biologists to converge on the bay each spring, to understand the biology and conservation of red knots and other shorebirds. Yet rarely have we thought seriously about how it has shaped our lives, our sense of sexual, religious, political, and social alternatives, or our literatures. This book is the first to identify and examine the relations among literature, tourism, and the wider culture in the long eighteenth century. Gendering emerges as a key mechanism here both for those who brought travel home and for those who were influenced by it in other ways. The author brings Samuel Richardson, Laurence Sterne, and William Wordsworth side-by-side with lesser known authors such as Thomas Amory, Sarah Scott, and the anonymous author of The Travels and Adventures of Mademoiselle de Richelieu; and nuns, iconic Lake District shepherdesses, country houses, gardens, and whores, with accounts of tourists, opinions about them, and commentary on the place of tourism in society.

This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of both the historical and the contemporary dimensions of the politics and government of the “First State.” Once a sparsely populated, agrarian, and relatively insignificant polity, Delaware has become a densely and diversely populated financial and legal center often called the “corporation capital of the world.” Delaware’s prime location has been central to its development and transition from a goods-producing economy to a fast-growing, service-based economy. Despite its diminutive size, Delaware is, in many ways, the nation’s preferred corporate home. William W. Boyer and Edward C. Ratledge provide an overview of Delaware’s history, structure, and present politics and explain why one of the smallest states in the country is also one of the most powerful. Delaware continually promotes pro-business legislation, business and public objectives are entwined, and privatization is a dominant theme in public affairs. The state has an individualistic political order in which public participation is indirect and citizen activism is limited. Author: William W. Boyer, Edward C. The Great Depression transformed Delaware more than any other event in the modern history of the state. Through vintage photographs, this volume records both the gentle philanthropy of the people and the crushing poverty experienced by 11,000 citizens left chronically unemployed for more than a decade. It portrays the balance between agriculture and industry that defines Delaware as a state. These images show a generation that was born during the 1918 flu epidemic, lived through the worst economic slump of the 20th century, and fought and won war against German fascism and Japanese imperialism. Images of America: Delaware in the Great Depression records the story of the extraordinary people who fundamentally changed the way politics, industry, conservation, and agriculture combine to build a society and how the technological revolutions in this small state helped lay the foundation for the modern world.Author: R. Arranged by subjects—City and Town Views; Delaware Beaches; Amusements; Industry and Agriculture; Signs of the Times; Trains, Trolleys, and Automobiles; Water Transportation; Schools; Religion; Businesses; Hotels and Motels—each photo has a caption ranging from a sentence or two to several paragraphs. The book's introduction details how the cards were produced, analyzes the subject matter depicted on the cards, documents the history of several of the most prominent local photographers in the state whose work is found almost only on postcards, and traces the evolution and popularization of postcard photography. Through the photographs readers can witness the development of Delaware agriculture and fisheries, the expansion of the railroad into southern Delaware, the declining days of steamship service on Delaware rivers and creeks, the fate of Middletown's last trolley, and Delaware's unsuccessful campaign against "King Alcohol." They can see how Delawareans worshiped, worked, and shopped. They can visit local amusement parks and beaches from New Castle county to Sussex county. For the early decades of the twentieth century the postcard recorded every aspect of American life. As local historians will tell you, the photographic record of small town America during the period from 1900 to 1930 exists almost only on postcards. That is why historical societies, libraries, and museums have begun to amass postcard collections. In the last twenty years, historians and scholars have increasingly turned to the postcard as a way of seeing what our past literally looked like, what we enjoyed doing, where we worked and played, how we viewed one other, what we thought was important, and what prejudices we held. Located on Pea Patch Island, Fort Delaware was erected to defend local ports from enemy attack but never received or fired a shot in anger. The first earthen-work version, constructed during the War of 1812, was followed by a second 1820s plan incorporating a masonry star design with a network of drainage ditches. Engineering issues and a low-lying site doomed the structure; in 1831, it was irreparably damaged by fire. A new plan created a more substantial fortification still standing to this day. Fort Delaware evolved into a well-established community that transformed from protector to notorious Civil War prison camp. Most widely known as a prison, it subsequently served in lesser roles through three more conflicts. Images of America: Fort Delaware unifies an amazing pictorial record of Fort Delaware's historical timeline. The story is not only of active duty but its rescue from abandonment and subsequent successful preservation work.Author: Laura M. Skipjacks and workboats, tidal rivers and coastal marshes, charming streetscapes, historic houses, and town parks with bandstands—picturesque subjects abound along the shores of Chesapeake Bay and have long made the region a favorite among amateur and professional artists. In Painting the Eastern Shore, accomplished artist and teacher James Drake Iams combines visits to some of the Chesapeake's most beautiful places with step-by-step lessons for learning the art of watercolor painting. This attractive volume will serve as a welcome companion for the amateur watercolorist setting out to paint on location. After offering tips on what equipment to pack, Iams gives specific directions to various Delmarva sites, tells how to set up, and suggests what to look for in a subject. He then discusses a variety of essential techniques: sketching, composition, value, color, control of the medium, capturing depth and handling perspective, wetting the paper, and methods for painting key elements such as clouds, birds, boats, sand, and water. As he introduces readers to the fundamentals of watercolor painting, Iams leads them on a rambling, thoroughly enjoyable tour of memorable places throughout Maryland and Virginia's Eastern Shore and Delaware.
