The New Health Insurance Solution: How to Get Cheaper, Better Coverage Without a Traditional Employer Plan You no longer need a traditional employer plan to get good, affordable health insurance. The New Health Insurance Solution can help you cut your health insurance costs in half if: You're self-employed, an independent contractor, or your employer doesn't provide health insurance (you can probably get coverage on your own for about $94/month—a fraction of what an employer would have to pay for the same coverage) You are employed and pay extra to cover your spouse or children under your employer-sponsored plan—you may save 50% by taking them off your employer plan You own a small business and are getting killed by double-digit premium increases—you can now give employees tax-free money to buy their own plans and get your company out of the health insurance business

The book also explains in detail the best solutions for you if: You can't find affordable health insurance because you or a child have an expensive preexisting medical problem (your state has a program to provide you with guaranteed coverage ) You're currently putting money into an IRA or a 401(k)—because you don't realize that an HSA is always a better option You're unsure how you or your parents will be able to afford health insurance during retirement, or how to maximize benefits from Medicare—including the new Part D prescription drug plan

The New Health Insurance Solution is the definitive guide to the new ways every American can now get affordable health care—without an employer.

Deadly Spin: An Insurance Company Insider Speaks Out on How Corporate PR Is Killing Health Care and Deceiving Americans
Wendell Potter is the insurance industry's worst nightmare.
In June 2009, Wendell Potter made national headlines with his scorching testimony before the Senate panel on health care reform. This former senior VP of CIGNA explained how health insurers make promises they have no intention of keeping, how they flout regulations designed to protect consumers, and how they skew political debate with multibillion-dollar PR campaigns designed to spread disinformation.
Potter had walked away from a six-figure salary and two decades as an insurance executive because he could no longer abide the routine practices of an industry where the needs of sick and suffering Americans take a backseat to the bottom line. The last straw: when he visited a rural health clinic and saw hundreds of people standing in line in the rain to receive treatment in stalls built for livestock.
In Deadly Spin, Potter takes readers behind the scenes to show how a huge chunk of our absurd healthcare spending actually bankrolls a propaganda campaign and lobbying effort focused on protecting one thing: profits. Whatever the fate of the current health care legislation, it makes no attempt to change that fundamental problem.

Potter shows how relentless PR assaults play an insidious role in our political process anywhere that corporate profits are at stake—from climate change to defense policy. Deadly Spin tells us why—and how—we must fight back.

Inquiries in the Economics of Aging (National Bureau of Economic Research Project Report)
For over a decade, the National Bureau of Economic Research has sponsored the Economics of Aging Program, under the direction of David A. Wise. The program addresses issues that affect the well-being of individuals as they age and a society that is composed increasingly of older people.

Within the next twenty years, an unprecedented proportion of Americans will be over sixty-five. New research in the economics of aging is an essential element of understanding what the future holds for this aging population. Inquiries in the Economics of Aging presents both empirical papers that consider questions that are fundamental to public policy and more theoretical contributions that lay new groundwork for future research in the economics of aging.

Inquiries in the Economics of Aging provides a timely overview of some of the most important questions facing researchers on aging and outlines new techniques and models that may help to answer these questions. This important volume will be of great interest to specialists and policy makers as it paves the way for future analysis.

The New Politics of Old Age Policy

As the aging population of the United States continues to increase, age-related policies have come under intense scrutiny and have sparked heated debates. This revised and updated edition of The New Politics of Old Age Policy explains the politics behind the country’s age-based programs, describes how those programs work, and assesses how well—or poorly—they meet the growing and changing needs of older Americans.

The chapters address theoretical approaches to age-based policy; population dynamics and the impact of growing diversity within the older population; and national, state, and local political issues associated with major age-based programs. The contributors are leading experts whose essays range across disciplines, including political science, sociology, law, social work, social welfare, and gerontology.

More than any other source, this book presents the most current information on growing older in the United States, including detailed analyses of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, housing initiatives, the Older Americans Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and tax policy.

The Savvy Woman's Guide to Owning A Home: How to Care For, Improve, and Maintain Your Home (Savvy Woman's Guide (RSBPress)) Newly revised and updated to include information on energy efficiency-saving money, saving energy and maintaining your home. Finally, a homeowner's manual for everyone. Just as a new vehicle comes with an Owner's Manual, now your house can too. Homeowners aren't expected to repair their own home anymore than a driver is expected to repair their vehicle. Yet in each case, the owner is expected to know when a problem arises and who to call for help if the job isn't DIY. That is an owner's responsibility. Maintaining a home means knowing when servicing needs to be done, or when repairs need to be made. None of this is obvious to someone who has never been responsible for a home.

No Place Like Home: A History of Nursing and Home Care in the United States

No Place Like Home sets out to determine why home care, despite its potential as a cost-effective alternative to institutional care, remains a marginalized experiment in care giving. Nurse and historian Karen Buhler-Wilkerson traces the history of home care from its nineteenth-century origins in organized visiting nurses' associations, through a time when professional home care nearly disappeared, on to the 1960s, when a new wave of home care gathered force as physicians, hospital managers, and policy makers responded to economic mandates. Buhler-Wilkerson links local ideas about the formation and function of home-based services to national events and health care agendas, and she gives special attention to care of the "dangerous" sick, particularly poor immigrants with infectious diseases, and the "uninteresting" sick—those with chronic illnesses.

Long-term Care Insurance: Is it right for you? Are there better alternatives? Long-term care insurance is expensive Insurers keep raising rates Almost a third of owners have to stop paying! Most of us will never need it There are better alternatives Do Not Buy a LTCi policy before you compare alternatives LTCi policies average about $2,500 a year but they don't cover the full cost of care—averaging $87,235. Most sellers recommend starting before age 65 while we are still healthy and insurable but we will pay more. Like all disability insurance, we are paying for something that we may not need at all. Unlike the cost of a major medical operation covered by our comprehensive health care plan, the cost of long-term care can be estimated fairly accurately. With a 13% and 4% chance of spending 2+ years in a nursing home for women and men respectively, the average cost will be about $200,000. If we can stay at home, a home health aide costs about $20,000 a year. The average policy costing $2,500 a year will NOT cover all expenses. Depending on the institution we check into, daily costs are $250 a day or more. There are other medical costs—either out of pocket or a Medigap policy—that Medicare does not cover. There are other medical expenses on top of that. Because we are buying coverage for some period in the future—perhaps 30 years away—we must plan for inflation. Our $250 a day coverage may be worth only $120 while the price of care goes up annually. Some folks buy inflation protection with their policy but this just raises the price to perhaps $3,000 a year.
