Irish Moss, or Sagina subulata, is a wonderful ground cover plant that enjoys full sun to partial shade. It creates a dense, moss-like, evergreen plant that forms a carpet of green. Irish Moss is low-growing, reaching 1 - 2 inches in height and is perfect for growing in-between paver stones or edging a walkway. It has tiny white flowers in the later spring and summer. Start the tiny Irish Moss seeds indoors several weeks before the end of frost season. Do not cover the seed but press it into the soil. Covering the container with plastic wrap will help keep the humidity high. With a temperature range of 64 - 72F, germination is usually within 21 days. Transplant the plants outdoors 6 - 9 inches apart. The seed can also be directly started outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Keep the seed continuously moist until germination occurs. Dichondra is a perennial ground cover which has a prostrate or creeping growth habit with circular leaves and entire margins. It grows very close to the ground, (usually not over 2 inches tall) and is a warm season ground cover. It is adpated to warmer climates, but will retain its striking green color during winter temperatures as low as 20 - 25 degrees Farenheit with only slight leaf browning. Dichondra has broad, almost circular leaves (looks similar to clover) and when mown low establishes a thick dense carpet look. Dichondra is now used in many ground cover situations where normal grasses may not do as well. It has a bright green color and a very good feel underfoot. Dichondra is highly resistant to diseases and will grow in partial shade to full sun. Beautiful in landscaping areas of no maintenance where adapted, and does not need to be mown. When used in lawn situations it can be mown for an even, smooth finish.

The Bamboo Palm or Reed Palm is a relatively small graceful palm that grows to about 7 to 10 feet. Each stem is long and slender with "nodes" very similar in appearance to Bamboo. This Pieris is a bold colored plant for partially shaded gardens. It thrives in natural woodland settings. An excellent background plant with conifers in Japanese tea gardens. History
This is a genus of Ericaceous flowering plants from Asia and North America, classified in 1834 by David Don, 1799-1841. He named the genus after the Pierides or nine muses of mythology The parent species is P. japonica, introduced in 1784 as Andromeda japonica. The plant was first collected and described by noted physician Carl Thunberg while working for the Dutch East India Company in Japan. Plants are native to eastern China and Taiwan as well. It was introduced under P. japonica to the west in England by 1870 as the most cold hardy of all species. This and many of the P. japonica varieties likely include P. formosa for color and P. floribunda in their family tree.
