Nachdem wir einige Jahre vorher beste Erfahrungen mit einer last-minute-Reise gemacht hatten, buchten wir 1997 voller Optimismus eine last-minute-Reise in die Dominikanische Republik. Viele interessante Dinge lernten wir kennen, herrliche Landschaften haben wir dort gesehen und einige lustige oder abenteuerliche Begebenheiten durften wir erleben, wie beispielsweise die Fahrt in einem „Gwagwa". Die Fahrt im Gwagwa war ein echtes Erlebnis, Abenteuer pur. Das muss man einmal mitgemacht haben. Gwagwas sind Kleintransporter, in deren Laderaum bei etwas Glück ein paar Sitzbankreihen eingebaut wurden, bei weniger Glück fehlen diese Sitze und man nimmt auf dem Boden Platz. Zu erkennen sind diese Fahrzeuge sehr einfach daran, dass sie meistens bereits überbesetzt sind und an der Laderaumtüre 1 bis 3 Personen außen am Auto hängen und einem zuwinken. Winkt man zurück, halten sie an, egal wo man steht. Zurückwinken sollte man jedoch nur, wenn höchstens 1 Person außen dran hängt. Während der Fahrt nach Sosua betete ich ein Stoßgebet nach dem Anderen, dass die Bordwand dem Druck standhalten möge, sie war bereits stark durchgerostet und an mehreren Stellen konnte man durch faustgroße Löcher hindurch sehen. Und vom Fußboden des Fahrzeugs hatten wir ungehinderten Blick auf die unter uns liegende Straße... Wenn wir bei der Buchung einige wichtige Dinge beachtet hätten, wäre das ganz sicher ein echter Traumurlaub geworden. Das Hotel „Bahia Linda" war leider eine Billigabsteige, in dem ausschließlich last-minute-Reisende untergebracht waren. Es war kein einziger Gast dort, der ganz normal über einen Reisekatalog dieses Hotel gebucht hatte, wahrscheinlich wird es überhaupt nicht in einem Katalog angeboten. Es war zwar eine nette kleine Hotelanlage, die wie versprochen direkt am Meer lag, allerdings waren Versorgung und Hygiene katastrophal. Ausgehungert und erschöpft sind wir wieder zu Hause angekommen.
