This book evaluates the life and empire of the pivotal yet controversial Byzantine emperor Heraclius (ad. 610-641), a contemporary of the Prophet Muhammad. His stormy war-torn reign is critical for understanding the background to fundamental changes in the Balkans and the Middle East, including the emergence of Islam. Heraclius' skills enabled him to capture and recapture important territory, including Jerusalem, Syria and Egypt. Yet, they proved to be of little value when he confronted early Islamic conquests.Author: Walter E. The word 'Crusades' has traditionally referred to the wars fought after the late eleventh century to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. Reagan argues that they actually began in the seventh century with the conquest by the Persians of the Byzantine Empire. In retaliation, the emperor Heraclius used Christian propaganda to turn the war into the first crusade. Coincidentally, Heraclius's career was unfolding at the same time as that of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed. No sooner had Heraclius overthrown the power of Persia and regained the Holy Land, than he lost it to the irresistably strong Arabs. This is a study of how and why the Byzantine empire lost many of its most valuable provinces to Islamic conquerors in the seventh century, provinces that included Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia and Armenia. It investigates conditions on the eve of those conquests, mistakes in Byzantine policy toward the Muslims, the course of the military campaigns, and the problem of local official and civilian collaboration with the Muslims. It also seeks to explain how after some terrible losses the Byzantine government achieved some intellectual rationalization of its disasters and began the complex process of transforming and adapting its fiscal and military institutions and political controls in order to prevent further disintegration.Author: Walter E. HERACLIUS, EMPEROR OF ROME CONFESSED & SUPPORTED PROPHET MUHAMMADIn the year 610 CE, Heraclius succeeded Phocas as Emperor of Rome. Heraclius' empire flourished and extended as far west as the river Danube in Europe, and included all the countries on the Mediterranean coast. It also included many of the Arab countries surrounding Arabia as well as the Balkans of which Turkey with its famed city Constantinople (named after the Roman Emperor Constantine) was a jewel in the crown of the Roman Empire. . In 616 CE Prophet Muhammad, praise and peace be upon him, sent his messenger, Dihyah Al Kalbi, with a letter to Heraclius inviting him to Islam. Before Dihyah arrived with the invitation from the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, Heraclius had a very clear dream, a vision that he could not dismiss. In the vision he was told that a prophet had appeared among those who were circumcised. Heraclius was pious and aware of Jesus' prophecy that a new prophet would be sent, "And when Jesus, the son of Mary said, 'Children of Israel, I am sent to you by Allah to affirm the Torah that was before me, and to give news of a Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) who will come after me'" (Koran 61:6). Heraclius asked those close to him if they knew of any who practiced circumcision but they replied the only ones they knew were the Jews. Now that he had received the letter from the Prophet, praise and peace be upon him, Heraclius was indeed anxious to read it: Prophet Muhammad's Letter to Heraclius. In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful. From: The Messenger of Allah. To: Heraclius, the greatest of Romans. "Peace be upon those who follow Divine Guidance. I therefore, invite you to embrace Islam. Surrender to Allah and live in peace. Allah will doubly reward you, but if you turn away, the sin of the 'Arisiyin. (those under Heraclius' domain) will rest upon you." Then he quoted the Koran: 'Say: People of the Book! (Jews, Nazarenes and Christians). Let us come to a common word between us and you, that we will worship none except Allah, that we will associate none with Him, and that none of us take others for lords beside Allah.' . If they turn away, say, 'Bear witness that we are Muslims.' Koran 3:64. Go ahead it is a click away! This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. PLUS there’s the complete novella: Missionary Position (an erotic practicum): For young student Milani, only one step remains before joining the faculty at Carnal Academy: her practicum. She must explore the world of the Outsiders and practice all the sexual skills she’s been trained in—although she starts out a virgin, she seduces men, women and couples in preparation for her final exam. But will her infatuation with another woman derail her plans? This collection contains graphic depictions of sexual acts and includes explicit language. Matricaria ChamomiUa. Composite. Tincture prepared from the fresh plant when in flower; the flowers contain active principles which combine the properties of bitters and etheral oils. The plant is a native of Europe, but is occasionally cultivated in our gardens; the leaves and (lowers are small, thus differing from the Anthemis nobilis, or Roman chamomile; it must not be confounded with the Anthemis cotula, or wild chamomile, growing abundantly by the wayside and in waste places in this country. A decoction of the plant in the shape of tea is much used, and abused, as a domestic medicine, particularly in Germany. Hahnemann classed ChamomiUa with the polychrests. Two hundred and seventy-two symptoms observed by himself, and three by other authors, were published in his Fragmenta, and in vo1. iii of his Materia Medica Pura, second edition, these had increased to four hundred and sixty-one, besides containing thirty additional symptoms observed by Stapf. For later provings of the drug, see Allen's Encyclopedia, vo1. iii. Clin'cal observations are found scattered through our entire literature, there probably not being a physician in our ranks who has not tested the virtue of ChamomiUa in either high or low preparations. Not illustrated. 1832 Excerpt: ...When they got there, and looked at the hopeless height of the building, their courage forsook them, and nothing less than death seemed to be in store. Zohrab, however, taking a calm survey of the surrounding buildings, saw one higher than the rest, to which, had he some rope, or help to rest his hand upon, he thought he might swing himself forwards. It struck him that his ample veil might, if properly fixed and suspended, lower him down to a considerable distance. Upon this suggestion, Amima immediately offered a Cashmerian shawl, and every handkerchief which she possessed. Mariam did the same; and without the smallest loss of time did they manage to tie them together in such a manner that, when lowered, Zohrab would have apparently but little difficulty in setting foot upon the spot which he had pointed out. His resolution was soon made; one end of the veil was fastened to the middle prop of the casement. The evening's shades, which had now come on, were favourable; he was about taking his departure, when, kneeling before his mistress, he took her hand to entreat her forgiveness. Mariam upon this fled down the stairs in order to make proper explanations to the impatient eunuchs; and during this absence of all witnesses, the lovers gave themselves up to the rapturous effusions of their long-smothered passion, and in one short minute made more vows of eternal constancy and love than it is supposed lips, eyes, and tongue could make in so short a time. Just as Zohrab was about taking his last farewell, Amima drew from her arm an armlet composed of costly and magnificent emeralds, inscribed with sacred invocations, a favourite talisman long worn by her father, and given to her by her uncle. "Here," said she, "let this preserve my Zohrab; wear it ...Author: James Justinian Morier Paperback: 244 pages Company: University of Michigan Library (1833-01-01) List Price: $17.99 Amazon Price: $17.99

"Surrounded by a garland of waters" on the narrow straits of the Bosporus dividing Europe and Asia, Istanbul, formerly known as Constantinople, has been an unrivaled locus of cultural exchange since its beginnings as the Greek colony Byzantium. In its more than twenty-six centuries of existence the city has survived countless natural and political catastrophes, foreign conquests, and dynastic upheavals, enduring fantastic changes in religion, language, political status, and name. Despite these onslaughts of time, a vibrant local character and spirit have abided. Who 'lost' Christian North Africa? Who won it and how? Walter Kaegi takes a fresh look at these perennial questions, with maps and on-site observations, in this exciting new book. Persisting clouds of suspicion and blame overshadowed many Byzantine attempts to defend North Africa, as Byzantines failed to meet the multiple challenges from different directions which ultimately overwhelmed them. While the Muslims forcefully and permanently turned Byzantine internal dynastic and religious problems and military unrest to their advantage, they brought their own strengths to a dynamic process that would take a long time to complete - the transformation of North Africa. An impartial comparative framework helps to sort through identity politics, 'Orientalism' charges and counter-charges, and institutional controversies; this book also includes a new study of the decisive battle of Sbeitla in 647, helping readers to understand what befell Byzantium, and indeed empires from Rome to the present.Author: Walter E. What is jihad? Does it mean violence, as many non-Muslims assume? Or does it mean peace, as some Muslims insist? Because jihad is closely associated with the early spread of Islam, today's debate about the origin and meaning of jihad is nothing less than a struggle over Islam itself. In Jihad in Islamic History, Michael Bonner provides the first study in English that focuses on the early history of jihad, shedding much-needed light on the most recent controversies over jihad. To some, jihad is the essence of radical Islamist ideology, a synonym for terrorism, and even proof of Islam's innate violence. To others, jihad means a peaceful, individual, and internal spiritual striving. Bonner, however, shows that those who argue that jihad means only violence or only peace are both wrong. Jihad is a complex set of doctrines and practices that have changed over time and continue to evolve today. The Quran's messages about fighting and jihad are inseparable from its requirements of generosity and care for the poor. Jihad has often been a constructive and creative force, the key to building new Islamic societies and states. Jihad has regulated relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, in peace as well as in war. And while today's "jihadists" are in some ways following the "classical" jihad tradition, they have in other ways completely broken with it. Written for general readers who want to understand jihad and its controversies, Jihad in Islamic History will also interest specialists because of its original arguments. The Romaioi, Greek citizens of the Roman East, stood squarely in the path of Islamic expansion and saved Europe from being overrun by powerful tribes from the Easy. Their coinage reveals a society with strong religious undercurrents and divergent philosophies, but plagued by political and financial crises.
This illustrated handbook presents a concise history of the development of the coinage of the early Arab caliphate in the seventh century, tracing its transition from coins that closely resembled Byzantine issues with imperial images to purely aniconic specimens with inscriptions in Arabic. This so-called “Arab-Byzantine series” sheds light on a pivotal period in the history of Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, as formerly Byzantine provinces were slowly Arabicized and Islamicized following the Arab conquests of the 630s and 640s. The historical introduction, which includes descriptions of all the basic types, is followed by a summary catalogue of the recently acquired collection of Arab-Byzantine coins at Dumbarton Oaks.
