Older adults' perspectives on driving cessation [An article from: Journal of Aging Studies]
Older adults' perspectives on driving cessation [An article from: Journal of Aging Studies] This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Aging Studies, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Relinquishing the privilege to drive is a difficult issue for older adults. To better understand factors that influence driving decisions and to identify approaches that could help ease the transition to a non-driving status, we conducted focus groups with elders who had recently stopped driving. Results demonstrate that the decision to stop driving is reluctantly made by elders on their own or after prompting from others. While all have other means of transportation, a sense of loss of independence remains. Participants urged policy makers to address older driver issues and were proponents of developing procedures to identify at-risk drivers. They also stressed the importance of making plans for retirement from driving. Findings suggest that while there is ''life after driving,'' efforts are needed to help older drivers, and their families develop a plan for driving cessation that includes identifying the appropriate time to stop and acceptable transportation alternatives to driving.

Mobility and Transportation in the Elderly
Mobility and Transportation in the Elderly

This comprehensive volume examines the gradual reduction of mobility in the elderly. The authors first review the physiological and psychological changes that occur as we age, and go on to illustrate how this gradual decrease in adequate mobility can lead to an increase in automotive accidents. They also review the limitations that mass transportation systems and driving individual vehicles present for the elderly, and discuss different assistive devices that have been and should be implemented to help improve mobility. Each chapter ends with insightful commentaries by specialists in the gerontology field. This book is a must read for gerontologists as well as policy makers and educators on courses in organizational structures of social policy.

From the author: The physicochemical aging for parts of Sheet Molding Compound should be considered for their lifetime management and reusability. This material has a complex morphology and contains porosity due to the process and to shrinkage compensation. This SMC study has two complementary approaches. One describes the morphological consequences of water uptake, showing the decrease in the total amount and the fractal dimension of micro-voids by scanning electron microscopy and image processing. The other shows, by mechanical spectrometry, the effect of water on physical or chemical bonds. In both cases, the "low profile agent" in SMC plays an important role. The molecular mobility was taken as a sensor parameter for the structural changes at the molecular scale, highlighting and quantifying the first steps of the aging. The loss factor level increases, and the activation energies are modified, even for the first aging days. The analysis shows recovery for the material near the relaxation peak of the low profile agent, since the curve recovers its initial shape.

Community Mobility: Driving And Transportation Alternatives for Older Persons
Community Mobility: Driving And Transportation Alternatives for Older Persons Affordable, easy-to-use, and flexible transportation options are vital to older adults' quality of life. Community Mobility: Driving and Transportation Alternatives for Older Persons provides physical and occupational therapists with recent research findings on older driver assessment, remediation/rehabilitation, and the use of alternatives to the car in the event that older adults need to “retire” from driving. This unique book addresses changes in driving patterns over time, the impact of climate conditions on driving, mental and physical health issues, self-regulation by drivers, and driver safety.

Community Mobility addresses changes in driving patterns over time, the impact of climate conditions on driving, mental and physical health issues, self-regulation by drivers, and driver safety. This unique book also includes summaries of recent consensus conferences held in the United States and Canada to determine the best approaches to therapist services and counseling.

Community Mobility examines:
  • the effect of alternative forms of transportation on drivers in declining mental and physical health
  • safety interventions
  • the relationship between chronic illness and an elderly driver’s “home range”
  • road conditions versus driving patterns
  • factors that can act as predictors in mobility patterns
  • self-regulation and adaptation strategies
  • effective remediation techniques
  • a comprehensive driving evaluation (CDE)
  • and much more!
Community Mobility is an essential resource for anyone working with elderly drivers who face the loss of independence and the decreased access to social activities, medical services, and other basic needs that accompany “retirement” from the driver’s seat.
