With over 100 million copies in print, the Book of Mormon has spawned a vast religious movement, but it remains little discussed outside Mormon circles. Now Terry L. Givens offers a full-length treatment of this influential work, illuminating the varied meanings and tempestuous impact of this uniquely American scripture.Givens examines the text's role as a divine testament of the Last Days and as a sacred sign of Joseph Smith's status as a modern-day prophet. He assesses its claim to be a history of the pre-Columbian peopling of the Western Hemisphere, and later explores how the Book has been defined as a cultural product--the imaginative ravings of a rustic religion-maker. Givens further investigates its status as a new American Bible or Fifth Gospel, one that displaces, supports, or, in some views, perverts the canonical Word of God. Finally, Givens highlights the Book's role as the engine behind what may become the next world religion. The most wide-ranging study on the subject outside Mormon presses, By the Hand of Mormon will fascinate anyone curious about a religious people who, despite their numbers, remain strangers in our midst. Author: Terryl L. Givens Paperback: 336 pages Company: Oxford University Press, USA (2003-08-21) ISBN: 0195168887 List Price: $19.95 Amazon Price: $11.33 Used Price: $9.19
The Nephite Sacred Record Since the mid-20th century, Mesoamerican Theorists have been skewing and altering the sacred record of the Nephites in order to fit the text into their Central America models. There is no excuse in writing an article or a book about the Book of Mormon and change the scriptures. This work shows how these Mesoamerican Theorists, use all six of the above methods to try and prove or support their view about Lehi's Land of Promise. While intellectual people may disagree on matters of observation, evaluation, and interpretation, there is no room for the rampant misuse of scripture in order to prove a point of view. Difficulty will always occur when a person, scholar, or scientist begins with a "point of view" then goes about trying to prove "it" at the expense of the clear and precise language of the scriptures. Taking two of the most prominent books on the subject, and a scattering of other author's comments, the critique in this work shows how far afield they have strayed from the actual scriptures. The words in the Book of Mormon should never be used except as they were written, with the context in which they were written. Perhaps we should have Nephi's attitude: "For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children," (2 Nephi 4:15) and "my soul delighteth in plainness." (2 Nephi 25:4) This work is dedicated to Nephi's plainness, and to a correct understanding of the scriptures he and others have left us about the location of, and their society in, the promised land.Author: Del DowDell Paperback: 818 pages Company: CreateSpace (2010-03-31) ISBN: 1450544606 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $29.95

A troubled childhood. A difficult adolescence. How might these have affected the adult character of church founder Joseph Smith? Psychiatrist Robert D. Anderson explores the impact on young Joseph of his family's ten moves in sixteen years, their dire poverty, especially after his father's Chinese export venture failed, and his father's drinking. It is equally significant, writes Anderson, that Joseph's mother suffered bouts of depression. For instance, "for months" she "did not feel as though life was worth seeking" after two sisters died of tuberculosis and later when she buried two sons, Ephraim and Alvin. A typhoid epidemic nearly claimed her daughter Sophronia, and the same affliction left Joseph with a crippled leg, after which he was sent to live on the coast with an uncle. Such factors and others produced emotional wounds that emerged later in the prophet's life and writings, in particular, according to Anderson, in the Book of Mormon. Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith, writes W. W. Meissner (Professor of Psychoanalysis, Boston College; author, Ignatius of Loyola: The Psychology of a Saint): "is a superb study, approached with the dual advantage of an insider and an experienced psychiatrist. Anderson presents a convincing psychobiographic analysis of a great religious figure, unveiling for us a profound and perplexing question surrounding religious movements how such important figures can translate psychic disturbances into messages of conviction and inspiration. The story itself is powerful, and the questions it raises are thought provoking." Brigham D. Madsen (professor emeritus of history, former vice president, University of Utah; editor, Studies of the Book of Mormon by B. H. Roberts) agrees that "Anderson has an excellent grasp of early Mormon history and writes with dispassion and good balance, impressive scholarship, and readable prose. His naturalistic explanation provides a unique and penetrating analysis of factors which motivated and fashioned Joseph Smith's dictation of the Book of Mormon. We have been waiting a long time for this book."Author: Robert D. Having spent a lifetime searching for Book of Mormon lands in some 250 ruins throughout Mexico and Central and South America, I am intrigued to return to Cumorah where it all ended. May and Goble have compiled fascinating arguments for those lands being in North-east America, complete with compelling new evidence in the form of ancient mound-fortresses, fascinating native tales of white men in the area, and astounding artifacts-many never before published. Anyone seeking to resolve the nagging mystery of Book of Mormon locations must consider this insightful book.

While scholars march in lockstep to a MesoAmerican Book of Mormon theory, Wayne May and Edwin Goble explore the archaeological riches of the Adena/Hopewell cultures in North America and find gold.
"This Land" presents a compelling argument that we need only check our own backyard to uncover evidence of Moroni's earthen enclosures. Besides a well-written, crash-course in archaeology, readers will also be intrigued with evidences of Hebraisms found in America. This book is a valuable contribution to Book of Mormon research.

This book is a valuable guide to enjoying and comprehending the ancient American scriptures. It is a simplified reading program, a useful summary, a doctrinal analysis and an in-depth topical guide to the Book of Mormon. Carefully designed to increase reader understanding, the book is especially helpful for investigators, new members, young students, and those reading the Book of Mormon for the first time. Teachers of courses on the Book of Mormon will easily recognize its value also. In Part I, The Reading Guide, the Book of Mormon is divided into twelve portions of from 40 to 50 pages. Each portion contains a simple story outline which indicates the major historical events which transpire. Then, chapters of special interest are listed, and passages of doctrinal importance are summarized into concise units. These summaries help the reader to follow the major messages on a verse-by-verse basis. Difficult passages, such as the chapters quoted from the writings of Isaiah, are examined and given special explanations in their historical context. Part II is a useful Doctrinal Guide to the hundreds of important teachings found in the Book of Mormon. Passages are listed under related headings, with the Table of Contents serving as a simple index. This doctrinal analysis is the most comprehensive list of Book of Mormon themes in print and should prove invaluable to every Book of Mormon student. Part III contains Charts and Special Helps which will aid in understanding the Book of Mormon. They tell in simple form of the various groups that migrated to the Americas, of the plates upon which the records were kept, and of how God protected the writings to come forth in the last days. The basic elements of Book of Mormon geography are discussed, and the authors and keepers of the sacred records are listed. How to Understand the Book of Mormon is a vital study tool which will serve as a lifetime reference to those who love the Book of Mormon.
The Geography of the Book of Mormon by E. Cecil McGavin and Willard W. Bean (& Wayne N. May) is an incisive study of the geographical locations of the three colonies that came to America in ancient days; and their spreading into North America in what is now Southern Canada and the country east of the Mississippi River and south of the Great Lakes. The authors address themselves to the non-scientist, the ordinary reader and student of religion. The text needs to be studied rather than just read. Anyone interested in the subject will find the effort thoroughly worth while. The thesis centers around a concept of the Prophet Joseph Smith who “was definitely convinced that the Nephites had spread over North America.” While traveling with Zion’s camp near the Illinois River, a skeleton was found which Joseph Smith identified as Zelph. He explained that Zelph was a converted Lamanite and became a great warrior of the Nephite armies “from the eastern sea to the Rocky Mountains.” Nearby, as explained by the Prophet, the Nephite city of Manti had been built. Later when the remains of a stone tower were found along the Grand River in Missouri, he told his brethren that it was ‘an old Nephite tower.” The authors of this book maintain that the Nephites spread throughout North America and the country particularly east of the Mississippi River. Contiguous to the Great Lakes is where the thousands of people finally found the land of their desires. The present Hill Cumorah was the center and here the gold plates were buried to be brought forth in this day by the visitation of the Angel Moroni, who placed them in the hands of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Here the great battles were finally fought between the Nephites and Lamanites, and archeologists of today verify this idea by their careful investigations. Mark Twain once derided the Book of Mormon as "chloroform in print." Long and complicated, written in the language of the King James version of the Bible, it boggles the minds of many. Yet it is unquestionably one of the most influential books ever written. With over 140 million copies in print, it is a central text of one of the largest and fastest-growing faiths in the world. And, Grant Hardy shows, it's far from the coma-inducing doorstop caricatured by Twain. In Understanding the Book of Mormon, Hardy offers the first comprehensive analysis of the work's narrative structure in its 180 year history. Unlike virtually all other recent world scriptures, the Book of Mormon presents itself as an integrated narrative rather than a series of doctrinal expositions, moral injunctions, or devotional hymns. Hardy takes readers through its characters, events, and ideas, as he explores the story and its messages. He identifies the book's literary techniques, such as characterization, embedded documents, allusions, and parallel narratives. Whether Joseph Smith is regarded as author or translator, it's noteworthy that he never speaks in his own voice; rather, he mediates nearly everything through the narrators Nephi, Mormon, and Moroni. Hardy shows how each has a distinctive voice, and all are woven into an integral whole. As with any scripture, the contending views of the Book of Mormon can seem irreconcilable. For believers, it is an actual historical document, transmitted from ancient America. For nonbelievers, it is the work of a nineteenth-century farmer from upstate New York. Hardy transcends this intractable conflict by offering a literary approach, one appropriate to both history and fiction. Regardless of whether readers are interested in American history, literature, comparative religion, or even salvation, he writes, the book can best be read if we examine the text on its own terms. MORE NEPHI CODE As thoroughly documented in Lehi Never Saw Mesoamerica, since the Nephite Land of Promise was the Andean area of South America, this second, follow-up work answers the question, "With Lehi landing in South America, who then left the ruins in Mexico, Belize, the Yucatan and Guatemala?" This volume also answers the follow-up question, "Since the Olmecs of Vera Cruz, Mexico, were not the precursors of the Jaredites, where did they land if not in Mesoamerica?" These questions, never asked by others, are at the heart of the geographical setting of the Nephite Nation. Many members of the Church, almost all LDS and BYU archaeologists, and all of F.A.R.M.S. and other ancient studies groups involved in this work, believe that Mesoamerica was the landing site of the Lehi Colony, and of the Jaredites long before them. However, a careful study of the sciences connected to the words Nephi left us, and the brief account of the Jaredites, the wind and sea currents, and climate, soils and other factors, as suggested in scripture simply cannot be satisfied by Mesoamerica. This second work shows the message Nephite prophets and Ether left us regarding the settlement of the Western Hemisphere, and provides an exciting and insightful glance at the world of the Jaredites, their trek to the Great Sea and the oceans they crossed in submersible barges to reach their land of promise-and where that land of promise was located.Author: Mr. Del DowDell Paperback: 586 pages Company: CreateSpace (2010-01-11) ISBN: 1449974775 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $29.35
In recent years, the controversy regarding the place where the Nephites were destroyed in relation to the rest of the Lands of the Book of Mormon has gone too far in various directions, either giving dated historical statements of various authorities too much weight, or dismissing them entirely as having no revelatory status. Finally, a rational, theoretical framework for the New York Cumorah has been established without relying on dated materials, or throwing out critical things from tradition entirely. This book presents critical reviews of the writings of the Mesoamerican Cumorah theory advocates who try to establish that the Nephites were not destroyed in New York. This book advocates for a placement of the ancient Cumorah in New York, while asserting that the urban society of Mesoamerica was the General Land of Zarahemla.Author: Edwin Goble Paperback: 148 pages Company: CreateSpace (2011-01-23) ISBN: 1456506455 List Price: $14.99 Amazon Price: $9.95 Used Price: $9.95
In a way no other work has done, this thoroughly researched and footnoted work discloses the clues Nephi left us throughout his writing regarding the location of the Land of Promise, including how he got there and what he found when he arrived.Author: Del DowDell Paperback: 818 pages Company: CreateSpace (2009-11-30) ISBN: 1449576907 List Price: $34.95 Amazon Price: $34.95
Perhaps we should have Nephi's attitude: "For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children," (2 Nephi 4:15) and "my soul delighteth in plainness." (2 Nephi 25:4) This work is dedicated to Nephi's plainness, and to a correct understanding of the scriptures he and others have left us about the location of, and their society in, the promised land.Author: Del DowDell Paperback: 818 pages Company: CreateSpace (2010-03-31) ISBN: 1450544606 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $29.95 |
