Family life is often a place of violence, especially violence against women--in Christian homes as well as in secular ones. Nancy Nason-Clark's sociological investigations allow her to analyze this problem and to reveal how Christian communities respond to family violence in positive ways. She also to suggests how church and secular agencies can cooperate for even more effective action. This vitally important volume places the problem of wife beating in a broad cultural context in a search for strategies to reform societies, including our own, that are prone to this pernicious form of violence. Based on first hand ethnographic data on more than a dozen societies, including a number in Oceania, this collection explores the social and cultural factors that work either to inhibit or to promote domestic violence against women. The volume also includes a study of abuse among nonhuman primates and a cross-cultural analysis of the legal aspects of wife beating. By presenting counterexamples from other cultures, contributors challenge Western assumptions about the factors leading to wife beating. Through a close examination of societies where wife beating is infrequent or absent, "To Have and To Hit" identifies the factors - economic, social, political, and cultural - that must be explored and transformed in order to combat this violence and eventually eliminate it.Paperback: 344 pages Company: University of Illinois Press (1999-09-08) ISBN: 0252067975 List Price: $30.00 Amazon Price: $26.70 Used Price: $7.50 The author explores the dynamics and the effects of being in an emotionally abusive relationship. Through a series of discussions and exercises based on the 12-step program, she helps psychologically abused women explore their childhoods, build self-esteem, and deal effectively with verbal violence.

It was 1869 and Sarah Moses, with "a very black eye," told her father: The world will never know what trouble I have seen. What she'd seen was violence at the hands of her husband. Does the world know any more of such things today than it did in Sarah's time? Sarah, it so happens, lived in Oregon, that Edenic state on the Pacific Coast, and it is here that David Peterson del Mar centers his history of violence against wives. What causes such violence? Has it changed over time? How does it relate to the state of society as a whole? And how have women tried to stop it, resist it, escape it? These are the questions Peterson del Mar pursues, and the answers he finds are as fascinating as they are disturbing. Thousands of thickly documented divorce cases from the Oregon circuit courts let us listen to voices who often go unheard. These are the people who didn't keep diaries or leave autobiographies, who sometimes could not write at all. Here they speak of a society that quietly condoned wife beating until the spread of an ethos of self-restraint in the late nineteenth century. And then, Peterson del Mar finds, the practice increased with a vengeance with the florescence of expressive individualism during the twentieth century. What Trouble I Have Seen also traces a dramatic shift in wives' response to their husbands' violence. Settler and Native American women commonly fought abusive mates. Most wives of the late nineteenth century acted more cautiously and relied on others for protection. But twentieth-century privatism, Peterson del Mar discovers, often isolated modern wives from family and neighbors, casting abused women on the mercy of the police, women's shelters, and, most important, their own resources. Thus a new emphasis on self-determination, even as it stimulated violence among men, enhanced the ability of women to resist and escape violent husbands. The first sustained history of violence toward wives, What Trouble I Have Seen offers remarkable testimony to the impact of social trends on the most private arrangements, and the resilience of women subject to a seemingly timeless crime. What I Wish I Had Known When You Think You Are Being Abused - Abuse is real and it happens to both men and women at the hands of both sexes. It is appalling, inexcusable and it ruins lives, wreaks havoc on the faces, minds and bodies of those who have to endure it. If you see signs of having an abusive husband, abusive wife or abusive person of any kind in your life, here you can learn from my mistakes. What I Did Instead - The next day, as I stood in the foyer hearing the wedding march begin to play, I looked at the glass windows of the church that I had grown up in, and I paused. I wondered if I should turn back and tell my Dad when he came to get me, to walk down the aisle that I had changed my mind and that I had serious doubts about marrying my groom. Out of pride and love for them, I went down the aisle with a bit of dread in my heart, dismissing it quickly and shoving it down to the pit of my stomach and my mind. Thus, began a pattern that would continue for almost twenty-seven years…..shoving aside what I should have confronted face to face. This current study has emerged from two decades of the author's investigations in related areas, alcoholism and domestic relations. Its canvas is broadly comparative, drawing on interviews and data gathered in the United States and Finland. It complements Dr. Wiseman's prizewinning work on the treatment of Skid Row alcoholics, Stations of the Lost, while involving issues of greater complexity on both the methodological and theoretical plane. The domestic drama of The Other Half is played out in the private scene of the home and the more public scene of the workplace, and against two differing national backgrounds. In America, there is somewhat more acceptance of the ideal of equality and companionship within the marriage, while differential hiring and promotion still persist in the workplace. In Finland, the husband is still "the boss" in the household, but women have larger opportunity for good positions at higher pay. Interestingly, however, the effects of alcoholism on the family are similar enough to submerge many of the expected and perceived cultural differences between the countries. This study offers theoretical insights gleaned from its perspective on alcoholism as an interactive phenomenon, to which the concepts of G.H. Mead and Blumer can be applied to illuminate the carefully presented data and go beyond them. New terrain in studies of alcoholism is thereby explored, including such themes as the social construction by the subjects of their husbands' drinking, their marriage, and their self-images; the strategy of coping mechanisms; and the effects of the crisis of alcoholism on gender, sex roles, and power differentials.

Psychological abuse can be as damaging to the psyche as physical abuse can be to the body, yet little is written about this common problem. This book confronts the issue of psychological abuse of women in marriage. Psychological abuse consists of an on-going pattern of domination, oppression, unrealistic expectations, verbal attacking or silent withdrawal within a relationship typically devoid of emotional connection. The author addresses the questions of how and why these women are abused, how the abuse starts and progresses, and in what ways does the process differ from that of physical abuse? Using quotes from survivors of these relationships, Dr. Chang describes life inside one of these relationships and gives treatment recommendations.Author: Valerie Nash Chang Hardcover: 184 pages Company: Praeger Publishers (1996-01-30) ISBN: 0275952096 List Price: $106.95 Amazon Price: $106.95 Used Price: $28.83

From the earliest years of his marriage, Paul Hegstrom handled his problems and frustrations the only way he knew how: with fists and fury. Talking about the problem only intensified his rage. Going into the Christian ministry didn’t help either, the guilt merely magnified his despair. Facing a charge of attempted murder and a prison term, Hegstrom got the wake-up call he needed. With professional help and an intense struggle with spiritual issues, he began the lengthy process of healing and recovery.Through a fascinating, yet thorough examination of the psychological components of various types of abuse, along with true examples from his own life and others, Hegstrom points the way back to wholeness and freedom. An invaluable aid for the man who batters, the woman who feels trapped, and the pastor, counselor, or friend who desperately wants to help them both, Angry Men and the Women Who Love Them offers straight answers for those willing to overcome the cycle of violence. The revised and updated edition includes a new chapter that discusses the physiological and psychological changes in the brain when abuse occurs.Author: Paul Hegstrom Paperback: 152 pages Company: Beacon Hill Press of Kansas City (2004-05-28) ISBN: 0834121522 List Price: $13.99 Amazon Price: $6.45 Used Price: $7.37 Author: Faith McNulty

After leaving her twelve-year marriage, Sophie Tamas went to the local women's shelter to ask if she had been abused. The result is Life after Leaving, a performative, arts-based journey into the aftermath of spousal abuse and the endless struggle to make sense of loss. We see Sophie's world—the academic lectures, the therapy sessions, the childrearing, the dealings with an ex-spouse, the house reconstruction—as she looks for answers in the literature and in the lives of other women. Both lyrical and theoretical, autoethnographic and analytical, her captivating story builds to a chorus of voices, as her study participants express the loving, longing, pain, hope, and frustration of their experiences after leaving abusive relationships. The text closes with insightful and surprising suggestions for reframing "recovery". An earlier version of this manuscript was short-listed for the AERA Arts-Based Dissertation Award and won the 2011 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology. About half of the women in the United States and Canada have been physically or sexually assaulted after the age of 16. The figures in other countries are similar. Written by an outsider (an anthropologist) and an insider (a spousal abuse survivor), this book offers a humanistic, rather than statistical, overview of the problem of spousal abuse. It is based on an extensive set of interviews with abused women and individuals who seek to help them (shelter workers, police officers, marriage counselors). More particularly, it follows four women as they move through the steps they must follow to extricate themselves from an abusive relationship and then get on with their lives. The reader witnesses their success and failures as they face a task that is both necessary and daunting, and the effects that spousal abuse (and at attempts stopping the abuse) have on an ever-widening circle of people. This book illustrates how society in general and individuals and organizations in particular help and hinder the process of extrication - often at the same time. By analyzing the solutions, and their implications, that have been offered to and by the abused women, the authors arrive at a set of alternative solutions that could significantly reduce the incidence of spouse abuse in the future.Author: Shawn D. Domestic abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Are you prepared to work with the people whose lives it has changed?Domestic Abuse Across the Lifespan: The Role of Occupational Therapy reframes the problem of domestic violence, taking it out of the home and into the practice of occupational therapy. It identifies the effects of all types of domestic abuse (spousal, child, elder, etc.) as well as frameworks to address dysfunction that has occurred secondary to the abuse. This book shows that the effects of domestic abuse are indeed in the realm of occupational therapy practice, and that just as occupational therapists would consider other environmental concerns (i.e. kitchen and bathroom safety), they must also consider abuse and its effects.Domestic Abuse Across the Lifespan: The Role of Occupational Therapy provides you with: definitions and illustrative examples of each type of domestic violence risk factors for becoming a victim or an abuser an examination of the occupational therapist's role with victims of abuse reasons why women may decide to refuse intervention a discussion of the connection between victim advocacy and occupational therapy a case study detailing the clinical findings and treatment of a six-month-old infant with shaken baby syndrome who received in-patient occupational therapy a case study of a child witness of domestic abuse and the use of the Occupational Therapy Psychosocial Assessment of Learning (OT PAL) in measuring the psychosocial aspects of his performance in a nontraditional classroom setting a checklist for occupational therapists who encounter elder abuse and a case study that illustrates its use . . . and much more! The number of people whose lives are scarred by domestic abuse is vast and growing every day. How is it possible for a highly educated woman with a career and resources of her own to stay in a marriage with an abusive husband? How can a man be considered a pillar of his community and regularly give his wife a black eye? The very nature of these questions proves how convinced we are that domestic violence is restricted to the lower classes. Now Susan Weitzman explores a heretofore overlooked population of battered wives-the upper-educated and upper-income women who rarely report abuse and remain trapped by their own silence. In 2001 four women were murdered daily in the United States by their spouses. Nearly a decade later there has been a sharp rise in family violence, with women as the primary target. It is evidenced by more than double the calls to hotlines, hospital emergency rooms and crisis shelters overflowing with victims. Walk-ins are up 240 percent in 2009 compared to 2008, while the number of women and children staying in shelters has increased by more than 70 percent. Invariably, when poverty rises, domestic violence and specifically wife abuse also rises. Even in so-called civilized nations such as the United States, millions of wives are beaten and raped by their spouses. Hardly discussed is the psychological torture meted out to women around the world by narcissistic husbands. To get free of the trap of wife abuse, we need to break it down, analyze it and confront it, so as to understand that it begins in the mind - first of the perpetrator, then of the victim. We can pass laws, but how do we change minds? How do we liberate minds from the insidious spread of emotional and psychological abuse that ends in physical abuse? While the number of women suffering physical abuse is in the tens of millions, those suffering mental torture at the hands of men number more than one hundred million. With the rise of fundamentalism in an era of a new Great Depression and growing fascism, this is not a minor social issue. How long will you continue to tolerate it? When will you face the endless vivisection of women¿s minds and bodies? When will you accept your responsibility to reclaim your humanity by ending their agony once and for all?Author: Garda Ghista Paperback: 128 pages Company: AuthorHouse (2009-03-05) ISBN: 143894621X List Price: $18.00 Amazon Price: $16.41 Used Price: $16.99

They talk about the affairs their husband had with other women in the church, the children they fathered, the abuse, and all the secrets that would never be revealed to the church congregation. The author also reveals her own personal story by boldly exposing the hidden secrets of her life growing up as a pastor's kid, with several of her own brothers that later became ministers, and also sharing her story living the life as a minister's wife, only in hopes of providing other women with courage, strength, and knowledge to take a stand and demand the happiness and respect they deserve.
