Covering an incredible 375 years, this book sets forth the genealogical history of some forty families who have their roots in Tidewater Virginia, families whose very history mirrors the social development of Virginia itself. Starting with the earliest colonial settler, the origins of the following Tidewater families are presented: Bell, Binford, Bonner, Butler, Campbell, Cheadle, Chiles, Clements, Cotton, Dejarnette(att), Dumas, Ellyson, Fishback, Fleming, Hamlin, Hampton, Harnison, Harris, Haynie, Hurt, Hutcheson, Lee, Mosby, Mundy, Nelson, Peatross, Pettyjohn, Ruffin, Short, Spencer, Tarleton, Tatum, Taylor, Terrill, Watkins, Winston, and Woodson. All families tie in with the earliest Hutcheson, Peatross, Butler, and Lee settlers in the colony of Virginia, and in each instance the family history, its vital statistics, and the events of the time are reported, as are brief accounts of collateral issue in each generation. (Note that a family chart is included to make the progression from one generation to the next easier to follow.) This is the first volume of a multi-volume work on Virginia genealogies consisting of material from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, a notable periodical that contained a large number of genealogies that will be of help to the researcher. The four-volume set has all of the family history articles, about 350, that appeared in the magazine from its inception in 1919 until its demise in 1952. This is a significant body of genealogical material, and many of the contributors were leading Virginia researchers. For convenience the articles are arranged in a single alphabetical sequence. Since each volume has its own index, the genealogist need only consult the particular volume required for his research. For a complete list of the contents write the Publisher.

When Tidewater Virginia Families was published by GPC in 1990 it was considered a landmark publication, so powerful a contribution to Virginia genealogy that it was numbered among a handful of genealogical compendia that would command the respect and admiration of all serious genealogists. In the intervening eight years enough new material has turned up to warrant publication of this supplement, Generations Beyond. But this is no mere addendum. In fact, to the forty Tidewater Virginia families treated in the original publication, no fewer than eleven new families have been added. In addition, the supplement includes vignettes and anecdotes of family life, descriptions and locations of family homes and burial sites, extensions of sibling lines, identification of neighbors, county maps, a place name index, and, where necessary, corrections and updates to the original volume. As in the original publication, all families tie in with the earliest Hutcheson, Peatross, Butler, and Lee settlers in the colony of Virginia, and in each instance the family history, its vital statistics, and the events of the time are reported, as are brief accounts of collateral issue in each generation. With the benefit of myriad sources both in print and manuscript, Mrs. Davis has once again managed to create a microcosmic genealogy of Tidewater Virginia, which includes the counties of Amherst, Caroline, Charles City, Dinwiddie, Elizabeth City, Essex, Fairfax, Fauquier, Gloucester, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Isle of Wight, James City, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland, Prince William, Prince George, Spotsylvania, Surry, Sussex, and York.Author: Virginia L. This is an encyclopedic listing of Virginia sources and resources for the genealogist. Ms. McGinnis devotes entire chapters to such subjects as Virginia land, people, and history; immigration and migration; vital records; Bible and church records; census records; land and court records; manuscripts and records abroad; ethnic Virginia; slavery and African-Americans; counties and their records; independent cities and their records; genealogical collections; and genealogical societies. Several sections of the book are based upon answers to questionnaires which the author sent to Virginia courthouses and historical and genealogical societies. The bibliography alone runs to 125 pages and contains references to 1,421 books and articles on all aspects of Virginia genealogy. By any measurement, this is a real giant of a book--and the standard by which all future textbooks on Virginia genealogy will be measured.Author: Carol McGinnis Paperback: 512 pages Company: Genealogical Publishing Company (1998-01-01) ISBN: 080631379X List Price: $37.95 Amazon Price: $29.99 Used Price: $29.99 Amazon.com Books: Virginia "local history" -city -Colorado -West
During the Revolutionary Period, and in the early days of the Union, Virginia was the nation’s most promising state. It produced a galaxy of America’s most important founders and statesmen: Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, John Marshall, and many others. And yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, Virginia had become little more than a byword for poverty, slavery, and economic stagnation. The decline was dramatic and startling. What happened? In Dominion of Memories, Susan Dunn chronicles the precipitous decline of America’s most promising state. A gloriously written tale of the Founding Fathers and their beloved state, Dominion of Memories offers in microcosm the story of how a nation founded with great hope in the Age of Revolution found itself marching inexorably towards civil war half a century later. Since 1949, the Hornbook has been the definitive, handy reference guide to Virginia history and culture. Its name derives from the early practice of creating an educational tool for children by mounting printed text on a board and covering it with translucent animal horn. Historians, genealogists, librarians, students, editors, government officials, and citizens seeking to answer questions about the past regularly rely on the Hornbook's comprehensive and authoritative information. Among the book's contents are: - A concise history of the commonwealth - Total population figures, 1610-1990 - Lists of all the governors, lieutenant governors, and attorneys general from 1607 to the present - Brief histories of the counties and cities presently in Virginia along with counties formerly in the commonwealth - Concise descriptions of famous houses, places of worship, and other historical sites - Brief histories of the colleges and universities in Virginia. The Hornbook of Virginia History is a must on the bookshelf of everyone who reads, researches, writes, or cares about Virginia history. Author: Emily J. Salmon, Edward D. C. Between the epic battles of 1862 and the grueling and violent military campaigns that would follow, the year 1863 was oddly quiet for the Confederate state of Virginia. Only one major battle was fought on its soil, at Chancellorsville, and the conflict was one of the Army of Northern Virginia's greatest victories. Yet the pressures of the Civil War turned the daily lives of Virginians -- young and old, men and women, civilians and soldiers -- into battles of their own. Despite minimal combat, 1863 was an eventful year in Virginia history -- Stonewall Jackson died within its borders and Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. In Virginia at War, 1863, editors William C. Davis and James I. Robertson Jr. present these and other key events, as well as a discussion of the year's military land operations to reveal the political, social, and cultural ramifications of the ongoing national conflict. By this time, the war had profoundly transformed nearly every aspect of Virginia life and culture, from education to religion to commerce. Mounting casualties and depleted resources made the citizens of the Commonwealth feel the deprivations of war more deeply than ever. Virginia at War, 1863 surveys these often overlooked elements of the conflict. Contributors focus on the war's impact on Virginia's children and its newly freed slaves. They shed light on the origins of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, explore the popularity of scrapbooking as a form of personal recordkeeping, and consider the changing role of religion during wartime and the uncertain faith of Virginia's Christians. The book concludes with the 1863 entries of the Diary of a Southern Refugee by Richmond's Judith Brockenbrough McGuire. At the midpoint of the Civil War, the hostility of this great American struggle had become an ingrained part of Virginia life. Virginia at War, 1863 is the third volume of a five-book series that reexamines the Commonwealth's history as an integral part of the Confederacy. The series looks beyond military campaigns and tactics to consider how the war forever changed the people, culture, and society of Virginia. The images in Postcard History Series: US Highway 1 in Virginia are representative of the nearly 200 miles of this historic highway and the communities along and near its path. Most of these pictorial memories are at least 50 years old, back when motorists were well acquainted with hand-pumping filling stations, mom-and-pop diners, and numerous tourist homes and cabins. In 1927, Route 1 became all concrete between Washington, DC, and Richmond. Business flourished until the interstate highway system came into being in the 1950s. There is much history surrounding US 1, often called America's Main Street.Author: Tony Kent Paperback: 128 pages Company: Arcadia Publishing (2011-12-05) (2011-12-05) ISBN: 0738588180 List Price: $21.99 Amazon Price: $13.60 Used Price: $11.25

George Randolph Wood filled several journal books with personal remembrances of life in nineteenth-century Hampton, Virginia; particularly of his experiences aboard river and canal boats transporting supplies for Confederate troops along the James River during the Civil War. Wood wrote about his experience because he thought it might interest his family, but his writing is of interest to a more general audience because of the scarcity of information about those who worked on river boats and supply barges during the war. In his later life, Wood was a druggist by profession and his writing lacks the sentimentality often found in reminiscences, and his terse, non-flowery style is interspersed with wit and honest observations of wartime spent on the James River, its tributaries, and the canal above Richmond. The Wood family evacuated Hampton and initially found sanctuary in City Point. They tramped over the corpse-strewn Malvern Hill battlefield. They lived in Richmond where Wood's oldest brother, Robert, was imprisoned as a Union sympathizer. And they found accommodations in a crowded mansion on the bank of the Appomattox River before returning through the lines to the ruins of Hampton. Wood watched artillery shells descend in his direction; attended scores of theatrical performances in Richmond; visited encampments of Hampton boys; twice saw Robert E. Lee; went hungry, yet sampled caviar; was detained at Fort Monroe; helped to build a house--and may have even cast a vote for Abraham Lincoln (in a mock presidential election). Historian Scott Nelson has written an illuminating essay on how Wood captures the dilemma of people living along the James River trying to survive between the battle lines of Union and Confederate troops, and how this account provides new and valuable information for scholars and students alike. Since its publication in 1958 this work has been regarded as an important source-book for colonial Virginia genealogy. It contains transcriptions of numerous historical documents and provides a great deal of out-of-the-way information pertaining to Virginians of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, much of it previously unknown. It is the product, in fact, of the compiler's researches into the by-ways of the Public Record Office in London, in particular his investigations of the reports sent from Virginia to the Colonial Office--an investigation into the very marrow of Virginia history. Among the documents copied and recorded here, such as lists of colonial officials, naval and militia officers, petitions, French refugees (1700-1702) and lists of ships leaving and arriving at Virginia ports, three groups of records in particular deserve to be singled out: (1) The Present State of Virginia (with respect to individual counties), which gives county acreage, number of tithables, and names of sheriffs, burgesses, coroners, justices, clerks, surveyors, and ministers; (2) Patents for Land, 1699-1737 (with gaps), giving the name of the patentee, date of the patent, county, and acreage; and (3) The Rent Rolls of 1704, which supply the names of thousands of property holders in twenty Virginia counties!Paperback: 394 pages Company: Genealogical Publishing Co. Owing to the total destruction of the county courthouse in 1869, few records of Buckingham County, Virginia survive. From documents in the Virginia State Library and the University of Virginia's Alderman Library, and from materials still in private hands, the compiler of this book has amassed a genealogical record of the county--not continuous and complete, since that would be impossible, but a rich selection of the kind of materials that would have been in the old courthouse. It is mainly birth, marriage, and death records in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties, beginning in 1673, although a few entries relate to events of an earlier date. In August of 1758, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, a poor Irish immigrant named Mary Madden bore a child, Sarah Madden, whose father was said to be a slave and the property of Colonel James Madison, father of the future president of the United States. This daughter, though born to a free mulatto, became indentured to the Madisons. There she worked as a seamstress to pay off the fine of her birth until she was thirty-one years old. Sarah Madden bore ten children; when the term of her indenture was over, she and her youngest son, Willis, struck out for themselves -- Sarah as a seamstress, laundress, and later, with Willis, a dairy farmer and tavern keeper. Spanning two hundred years of American history, We Were Always Free tells its story with remarkable completeness. we can thank Sarah Madden and her descendants for keeping their family narrative alive -- and for saving hundreds of important documents detailing their freedom, hardship, and daily work. These documents came to light in 1949 when T. O. Madden Jr. discovered a hidebound trunk originally belonging to his great-grandfather Willis. Stored in the trunk were papers dating back to the mid-eighteenth century, freedom papers, papers of indenture, deeds of land, Sarah Madden's laundry and seamstress record books, letters, traveling passes. The trunk even held a full set of business records from the nineteenth century when Madden's Tavern flourished as a center of activity in Orange County and as a rest stop on the road to Fredericksburg. From that day forward, T. O. Madden deeply researched his family, using census reports, other official sources, family, and friends. All have led to his ably reconstructed family history, and to his own remarkable story. We Were Always Free is a unique and very American family saga. Author: T. O. Travel through the centuries and watch subsequent family owners go to any lengths necessary to save their family home from the clutches of outsiders -- such as greedy step-mothers, and anyone, however close -- who would try to rob them of their birthright: the home that has remained family-owned since Edward Wright built it, circa 1782.Author: Mary Woodland Gould Tan and Virginia Carroll, Virginia Carroll Paperback: 217 pages Company: Mary Woodland Gould Tan (2007-06-25) ISBN: 1424342759 List Price: $17.95 Amazon Price: $17.95 Used Price: $15.00

Irons in the Fire chronicles the agricultural, industrial, and commercial activities of four generations of the Tayloe family of Northern Virginia, revealing a greater complexity in the southern business culture of early America than scholars have generally recognized. Through the story of one representative family, Laura Croghan Kamoie illustrates how entrepreneurship and a broadly skilled slave-labor force combined to create economic diversification well before the American Revolution. Contrary to general historical perceptions, southern elite planters were, at least until the 1790s, very like their northern counterparts. The Tayloes were planters and businessmen who, crucially, saw no distinction or conflict between these two roles. In this they were not unique: diversification, combined with an entrepreneurial inclination among the elite of the planter class, formed the basis of the Chesapeake's regional economy and contributed to its development. This diversity was reflected in the slave community. Demonstrating a versatility exceeding later generations of slaves, and occupying a central position in the daily operations of the South's business culture, the Chesapeake slaves made the planters' relatively sophisticated enterprises not only profitable but possible. Spanning more than a century of early American history, the story begins in 1700, when John Tayloe I managed the family's concerns, and concludes with his six great-grandsons, who lived into the Civil War era. Through the generations, the Tayloes demonstrated the same essential qualities--enterprise, risk-taking, business savvy, innovation, ambition, and pursuit of profit--as their northern counterparts. As the eighteenth century ended, however, cotton plantation agriculture--and, in Virginia, the internal slave trade in support of it--increasingly began to take over, working against economic diversification. Irons in the Fire provides an exceptional view of early American business, each generation of Tayloes approaching the family's welfare within the social, political, economic, and cultural contexts of their day. This business-family saga also contributes a pivotal perspective to contemporary debates about the economic modernity of the South. (Note that a family chart is included to make the progression from one generation to the next easier to follow.) Owing to the total destruction of the county courthouse in 1869, few records of Buckingham County, Virginia survive. Highlighting the work is a collection of family sketches.Author: Edythe Rucker Whitley Paperback: 170 pages Illustrated Company: Clearfield (2009-06-01) ISBN: 0806310553 List Price: $22.00 Amazon Price: $21.69 Used Price: $24.94 Author: Rena Gray Fazel

American military history began with the establishment of the Virginia colonial militia in the seventeenth century. Although ill-trained, it was the colony's only defense against Indian attacks and invasion by hostile powers. The records left are fragmentary and scattered, and it has always been hard to locate them and make them accessible. With the publication of this work that problem is now behind us. From research based on county court minutes and orders, bounty land applications and warrants, records of courts martial, county militia rosters, Hening's Statutes at Large, the Draper manuscripts, and manuscripts in the Public Record Office in London, we now have an authoritative register of Virginia's colonial soldiers. And it is not merely a dry catalogue of names and dates, for included are the military's "size" rolls which routinely give the soldier's place of birth, age, residence, occupation, and physical description. And sometimes this was made even more informative when the enlisting officer recorded his impressions of the soldier! Little is known of the ordinary people of colonial Virginia for they left no diaries or journals, but now we have the rare privilege of coming almost face to face with them in this remarkable book.Author: Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Hardcover: 458 pages Company: Genealogical Publishing Company (1998-01-01) ISBN: 080631219X List Price: $42.00 Amazon Price: $37.84 Used Price: $29.99

Owing to an unfortunate error in Clayton Torrence's Virginia Wills and Administrations it is widely believed that the early probate records of Elizabeth City County do not exist. This present volume is in large part a correction of that error, and indeed the bulk of it is devoted to abstracts of the county's wills and administrations for the period 1688 to 1800. As an aid to research in the county (now the independent city of Hampton), this work further includes such items as an index to land patents, the quit rent rolls for 1704, tithables of 1782, soldiers of 1776, marriage records, and lists of burgesses, justices, sheriffs, clerks, surveyors, and much else besides.Author: Blanche Adams Chapman Paperback: 210 pages Company: Clearfield (1980-01-01) ISBN: 0806309091 List Price: $25.00 Amazon Price: $22.95 Used Price: $17.69 Amazon.com Books: Virginia biography -City -Colorado -West -Woolf
Virginia Foster Durr (1903-1999) was a monumental champion of civil rights and yet, as a privileged white southern woman, an unlikely one. Freedom Writer is a collection of her letters from across three decades of struggle for the cause of racial equality. In 1951, returning to her native Alabama after a twenty-year absence, Durr was deeply affronted by the same unchecked racism she recalled from her childhood. To help understand the South and battle her sense of isolation, Durr wrote hundreds of letters--humorous, sharp, and observant--to her friends outside the region, among them Eleanor Roosevelt, Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson, Hugo Black, Jessica Mitford, and C. Vann Woodward.

The Lonely Hunter is widely accepted as the standard biography of Carson McCullers. Author of such landmarks of modern American fiction as Reflections in a Golden Eye and The Ballad of the Sad Café, Carson McCullers was the enfant terrible of the literary world of the 1940s and 1950s. Gifted but tormented, vulnerable but exploitative, McCullers led a life that had all the elements--and more--of a tragic novel. From McCullers's birth in Columbus, Georgia, in 1917 to her death in upstate New York in 1967, The Lonely Hunter thoroughly covers every significant event in, and aspect of, the writer's life: her rise as a young literary sensation; her emotional, artistic, and sexual eccentricities and entanglements; her debilitating illnesses; her travels in America and Europe; and the provenance of her works from their earliest drafts through their book, stage, and film versions. To research her subject, Virginia Spencer Carr visited all of the important places in McCullers's life, read virtually everything written by or about her, and interviewed hundreds of McCullers's relatives, friends, and enemies. The result is an enduring, distinguished portrait of a brilliant, but deeply troubled, writer. Born to a poor couple who were tenant farmers on a plantation in Mississippi, Anne Moody lived through some of the most dangerous days of the pre-civil rights era in the South. The week before she began high school came the news of Emmet Till’s lynching. Before then, she had "known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. But now there was…the fear of being killed just because I was black." In that moment was born the passion for freedom and justice that would change her life.An all-A student whose dream of going to college is realized when she wins a basketball scholarship, she finally dares to join the NAACP in her junior year. Through the NAACP and later through CORE and SNCC she has first-hand experience of the demonstrations and sit-ins that were the mainstay of the civil rights movement, and the arrests and jailings, the shotguns, fire hoses, police dogs, billy clubs and deadly force that were used to destroy it. A deeply personal story but also a portrait of a turning point in our nation’s destiny, this autobiography lets us see history in the making, through the eyes of one of the footsoldiers in the civil rights movement. Unlock the secret of your personality and learn how to be a better spouse, parent, friend, & Christian! All of us are born with distinct personality traits. Some of us live for crowds and parties; others seek solitude and time for quiet reflection. Some of us are naturally pushy, while others are content just to get along. We don.t pick and choose these traits; they.re just part of the way we.re made. For in the womb God doesn.t merely mold our body; He also gives us the temperament that, all our days, colors our understanding, guides our choices, and serves as the foundation of our moral and spiritual life. Ancient philosophers identified four basic temperaments, and over the centuries, countless wise souls have used these four to understand human nature. Now comes The Temperament God Gave You, the first Catholic book on the subject in 70 years. Here veteran Catholic counselor Art Bennett and his wife Laraine provide an accessible synthesis of classical wisdom, modern counseling science, and Catholic spirituality: a rich understanding of the temperaments and what they mean for you and for your family. Drawing on decades of study, prayer, and practical experience, Art and Laraine show you how to identify your own temperament and use it to become what God is calling you to be: a loving spouse, an effective parent, and a good friend. Best of all, they give you a Catholic understanding of the four temperaments that will bring you closer to God and help you discover the path to holiness that.s right for you. Peace. Happiness. Holiness. You.ll find yourself growing in each of these qualities as you come to understand . and learn to use as you should . the temperament God gave you.Author: Art Bennett, Laraine Bennett Paperback: 288 pages Company: Sophia Institute Press (2005-06-15) ISBN: 1933184027 List Price: $18.95 Amazon Price: $11.65 Used Price: $11.84

Arguably the world’s all-time greatest motorcycle road racing champion, Valentino Rossi is without a doubt the best--and the best-loved--in modern times. In What If I Had Never Tried It he tells his remarkable story for the first time. And as might be expected, the story he tells is fast-paced, full of surprises, action-packed, and always entertaining. The son of 1970s racer Graziano Rossi (whose number, 46, he wears when racing), Valentino was born in Urbino, Italy in 1979. Here he relates how he started racing as a teenager, first with karts and minimotos (minibikes). He then traces his rapid and seemingly inexorable progress--from the 125 class to the 250 class to the 500s and finally on to 990 cc four-stroke, now known as MotoGP--to become a seven-time World Champion in Grand Prix racing by the time he was twenty-six. As he describes starting his career as a clownish upstart, only to emerge as “The Doctor” so famed for his precision, Rossi’s crowd-pleasing character comes through in abundance. One moment a charismatic jokester, the next an insightful analyst, he is finally the single-minded, focused, strategic racer with split-second skills the rest of us can only dream of, giving us a glimpse of how one man has forever changed the face of motorcycle road racing. In this young adult autobiography, Tony Hawk shares the stories from his life that have helped him become a skateboarding hero. Hawk speaks of being a super-competitive 'demon' child who found peace while on a skateboard. Classmates teased him because of his interest in an 'uncool' sport. Instead of retaliating with violence, he practiced even more. With his story, he will inspire a younger generation of fans to stand up for what they believe in and follow their dreams. Born in 1905 in the center of the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire, Viktor Frankl was a witness to the great political, philosophical, and scientific upheavals of the twentieth century. In these stirring recollections, Frankl describes how as a young doctor of neurology in prewar Vienna his disagreements with Freud and Adler led to the development of "the third Viennese School of Psychotherapy," known as logotherapy; recounts his harrowing trials in four concentration camps during the War; and reflects on the celebrity brought by the publication of Man's Search for Meaning in 1945. A sharp, occasionally shocking, memoir that will change how you look at teenage mothers, The Girl Who Couldn’t Say No is also an amusing look at dating as a single twenty-something with a teenager and a toddler. Told with frank South African humour and refreshingly mature insight, Tracy Engelbrecht tells the story of how she came to find herself pregnant at 15 … and how she coped with pregnancy, birth and homework. And, perhaps surprisingly,it’s not all a complete disaster. This is an honest, unusual and utterly compelling memoir from an exciting new author.Author: Tracy Engelbrecht Paperback: 222 pages Company: CreateSpace (2011-05-22) ISBN: 1463516401 List Price: $9.99 Amazon Price: $8.65 Used Price: $37.20 Amazon.com Books: Virginia "town history" -city -Colorado -West
