This fascinating book by Rebecca Linder Hintze powerfully and effectively communicates a key, and sometimes overlooked, piece of the puzzle relating to family dynamics. For example, have you ever wondered why some families reach a ceiling on their earning potential, struggle to have happy marriages, or have such difficult interactions with their siblings and parents? Perhaps your family has a history of sabotaging careers or thwarting their love relationships? Healing Your Family History explains that most of our individual issues originate from family blocks. As you read this book, you’ll come to understand how family belief systems store inside you and prevent individual growth by locking you into thought processes that hold you back. All families have these nonverbal belief systems, and unless you understand and heal your inherent blocks, it may be difficult to love others, move forward, and get what you want in life. Most people have a family . . . and we all have a reason to heal our related challenges—after all, tribal issues sit at the core of world turmoil. Those who are truly ready to heal their family dysfunction will benefit immensely from this book! But there are any number of more-obscure sources that can lead researchers to vital information, and Obscure Sources: Great Clues in Hidden Places will introduce you to them. Bankruptcy records, special censuses, employment records, and coroners' records are only a few of the kinds of records you can turn to when other sources prove unfruitful. Netting Your Ancestors is designed not only to show you how to use the Internet in genealogical research but how to take maximum advantage of this extraordinary research tool. Written by genealogist and computer whiz Cyndi Howells, creator of the award-winning web site Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet, it is a guide to the most powerful research tool since the advent of the personal computer. This is no hollow claim, for in bringing resources from around the world right into your home, the Internet makes genealogical research possible on a global scale, in record-breaking time. With its clear, no-nonsense approach, Netting Your Ancestors answers the most fundamental questions about genealogical research on the Internet: How do I get online? What type of computer hardware and software do I need? What do I do once I'm online? Where do I start? What type of information is available? The answers to those questions, rendered in plain English, will help you to discover genealogical resources and finding-aids beyond your wildest dreams. What's more, you'll be able to communicate with researchers around the world, exchanging data that otherwise might take you a lifetime to find. To help you get the most out of your online research time, Netting Your Ancestors focuses on the three most useful components of the Internet, each of which is discussed in a separate chapter: E-mail, Mailing Lists and Newsgroups, and the World Wide Web. Within each chapter, sections are devoted to software requirements, guidelines, and the basic workings of each component, along with tips for researchers who have already been online for a while. The last section in each chapter is devoted to research strategies that will benefit both new and veteran online researchers. The ability to exchange information on a global scale and to explore vast new databases (as well as obscure factoids lurking at the edges of cyberspace) is what genealogical research on the Internet is all about. And in this book, with the aplomb and assurance of a seasoned Internet navigator, Cyndi Howells starts you out on your Internet journey of exploration and discovery, guiding you confidently toward your goal. It's a trip you'll never forget, even though you never leave home. (The author's web site, Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet, is the most comprehensive list of Internet resources for genealogy available and has been acclaimed by Newsweek magazine, Time magazine, Home PC magazine, and the History Channel.)Author: Cyndi Howells Paperback: 182 pages Company: Genealogical Pub Co (1999) ISBN: 0806315466 List Price: $9.95 Amazon Price: $2.90 Used Price: $0.01 Author: Vincent L Jones

With the release of this book, the search for the lost Rhoades Mine is narrowed to a few square miles of real estate due east of Kamas, Utah. This gives promise that the greatest of all gold deposits—including remains of Montezuma’s vast treasure—may soon be found. It all began in the mid-1800s when Ute chief Walkara bagged up sixty pounds of raw gold for Mormon bishop Isaac Morley. He took it to Brigham Young, who later assigned Thomas Rhoades—under a blood oath of secrecy—to fetch more of the sacred metal for minting coins and decorating temples. The gold came from the sacred Ute mines in the Uintah Mountains that were once worked by the Aztecs. In 1520 the Aztecs told Hernando Cortez that their vast hoards of gold came from seven mines far to the north—the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola—leading to Spanish exploration throughout the Uintah Mountains. But the Spaniards had little luck, and the treasure still awaits. Discover within these pages: • How modern technology has combined with history and legend to pinpoint the location—within a few square miles—of the Mother Lode of all gold deposits.

Wendover, USA, has a fascinating past. Nearby danger Cave was home to indigenous people eons of times ago. Pilot Mountain loomed deceptively near to travelers crossing the Great Salt Lake Desert. Beginning in 1907, as a railroad camp, Wendover was the embodiment of the Wild West traditions of bootlegging whiskey and prostitution. The town hosted one of Nevada's first gambling establishments and the Golden Splice transcontinental telephone line was joined there in 1914. Ten years later the Victory Highway was hailed as a feat of engineering when it was constructed across the salt flats. Famous British racers joined Ab Jenkins' Mormon Meteor in setting land speed records in the 1930's which brought the salt flats international recognition. World War II bombers shook the ground as they roared above Wendover Bombing and Gunnery Range on their practice runs. The preparations at Wendover Field for the earth-shattering atomic bomb mission to Japah were among the most guarded, complicated, and intrique-filled secrets of the war. Today, the twin cities of Wendover, Utah, and West Wendover, Nevada, are split by state boundaries. They struggle to co-exist. Still to be decided: Should the Nevada state line be shifted east to incorporate the divided towns into one Silver State Community.Author: Ronald R. Excerpt: ... most of her mining districts, from the Weber to the Colorado, where, in the sandstone formations, some very rich ores have been discovered. It is most abundant in southern Utah, but the only mines developed in 1883 were in the extreme north-western portion of the territory, where veins averaging seven or eight feet in width, enclosed in micacious shale and intermingled with porphyry, yielded in spots as much as fifty per cent of metal.6* Beds of sulphur were found both in northern and southern Utah, the largest, with an area of about 300 acres and a depth of not less than twenty feet, being in Millard county. In the hills of Beaver county, some fourteen miles south of Frisco, there are also large deposits of singular purity among fissures of silicious flint; but though much of it would yield fifty per cent, and some even 98 per cent, of pure brimstone, it has no commercial value, and is not even utilized for local consumption. Near Brigham City there are sulphurets of antimony, averaging at least four feet in thickness, and yielding from twenty to thirty per cent of metal. In Piute and Garfield counties are purer and larger deposits. Gypsum and mica abound in southern Utah, the latter being found also in Salt Lake and Davis counties. East of Nephi, in Juab county, is a vein of gypsum 1,200 feet long and 100 in width. In Washington and Sanpete counties it is also encountered, both in the crystallized and oxydized state. Cinnabar, cobalt, and bismuth, the last in paying quantities, are met with in Beaver county and at Tintic.65 Near Salt Lake is a solid mountain of rock salt.59 West of the lake are large deposits of saleratus. Fremont is a culture (ca. 300-1300 A.D.) first defined by archaeologist Noel Morss in 1928 based on characteristics unique to the area. Intially thought to be a simple socio-political system, recent reassessments of the Fremont assume a more complex society. This volume places Fremont rock art studies in this contemporary context. Author Steven Simms offers an innovative model of Fremont society, politics, and world-view using the principles of analogy and current archaeological evidence. Simms takes readers on a trip back in time by describing what a typical Fremont "hamlet" or residential area might have looked like a thousand years ago, including the inhabitants' daily activities. Francois Gohier's captivating photographs of Fremont art and artifacts offer an engaging complement to Simms's text, aiding us in our understanding of the lives of these ancient people. Simms's book is excellent! I really like his take on Fremont, I like the narrative descriptions of various Fremont settlements, and I like his treatment of rock art--balanced and scholarly without losing the interest and excitement of that astonishing Fremont medium. --Stephen H. Roadside History of Utah takes readers on a journey through time as it follows the state's highways, vividly portraying the determined people who faced the challenges of making a home in Utah. Readers will meet them all: the native peoples, early explorers and traders, Mormon pioneers, miners and ranchers, and even today's developers. In addition to detailing the state's major historical events, author Cindy Bennett displays a love of Utah that casts a warm glow on her accounts of tiny settlements taking root and growing into amiable towns like Pleasant Grove, whose main landmark today is a hamburger joint called the Purple Turtle, and Richmond, home of Utah's first evaporated-milk factory. Bennett relates stories such as the terror of Bear Lake, where for years a 75-foot monster was believed to lurk until it was discovered that the disturbance in the water were caused by local cattle. "The common denominator of these Utahns is neither birthplace, gender, politics, economic position, religion, ethnic background, liberalism, conservatism, nor profession," Alexander writes. "It is, rather, that each chose Utah as their home and that they have made the state a better place for all of us. Like these people, we become Utahns because we love its land and people, and because we have come to understand that it is still 'the right place.'"Author: Thomas Alexander Paperback: 488 pages Company: Gibbs Smith (2003-04-25) ISBN: 1586852620 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $22.70 Used Price: $11.52 Amazon.com Books: Utah church records

Captain Ginn's manuscript is, without a doubt an unusual collection of events that occurred on the Western Frontier, in the volatile years of 1857 and 1858. There are uniquely interesting and highly detailed accounts of a most pertinent and intimate nature regarding the condition in Utah and the West in 1857-58, that up to this time, has never, to the best of my knowledge, been seen by the general public. Through this novel, you will witness secret Mormon rituals, and the dark side of the 19th century Mormon doctrine, like polygamy's vicious bite, forcing women both Mormon and non-Mormon to marry against their will, and so much more on the Mountain Meadows Massacre.Author: Steven Farley Paperback: 184 pages Company: AuthorHouse (2003-05-08) ISBN: 1410743640 List Price: $17.50 Amazon Price: $15.65 Used Price: $12.00 Author: Susan M. There are no historical events that have more iconic significance for the people of Utah than the trek of the vanguard company of Mormons west in 1847. Its meaning may vary, but overall, the march has a highly symbolic and seminal historical importance for virtually all Utahns. While the journey has been widely celebrated, memorialized, and even sanctified and various books have been written about it, there is more that can be said and understood about the migration’s place in western history; about its context, including events preceding and following it; and about the real experiences of its participants. Particularly lacking in most published accounts are the stories of the rank and file members, the individuals who, in contrast to the well-known leadership, with Brigham Young at the top, might fittingly be called foot soldiers. The 1847 company had a military-like organization, which is captured by Ronald Barney’s term brigade in the title. Norton Jacob was such a man of the ranks in 1847. He had no special status in the Mormon Church, and there was little to make him stand out in the historical record than that he left what is regarded by many trail historians as one of the best and most informative journals of the early Mormon emigration. While the heart of Jacob’s record concerns the 1847 journey, there is much more to it. The diary published here begins in 1844, the year of church founder Joseph Smith’s murder. It continues through the crisis events that followed: the Mormons’ flight from Nauvoo, their trudging journey across Iowa to Winter Quarters, and the beginnings of mass migration to Utah. After the apex of 1847, the arc of the narrative moves through accounts of Jacob’s return to Nauvoo late that year and of the much larger Mormon emigration in 1848. It reaches denouement in a short record of his first years in Salt Lake Valley.Paperback: 408 pages Company: Utah State University Press (2005-05) ISBN: 0874216109 List Price: $22.95 Amazon Price: $22.94 Used Price: $28.00 This digital document is an article from New York Times Upfront, published by Thomson Gale on February 14, 2005. Mary Lois Walker Morris was a Mormon woman who challenged both American ideas about marriage and the U.S. legal system. Before the Manifesto provides a glimpse into her world as the polygamous wife of a prominent Salt Lake City businessman, during a time of great transition in Utah. This account of her life as a convert, milliner, active community member, mother, and wife begins in England, where her family joined the Mormon church, details her journey across the plains, and describes life in Utah in the 1880s. Her experiences were unusual as, following her first husband's deathbed request, she married his brother, as a plural wife, in the Old Testament tradition of levirate marriage. Mary Morris's memoir frames her 1879 to 1887 diary with both reflections on earlier years and passages that parallel entries in the day book, giving readers a better understanding of how she retrospectively saw her life. The thoroughly annotated diary offers the daily experience of a woman who kept a largely self-sufficient household, had a wide social network, ran her own business, wrote poetry, and was intellectually curious. The years of "the Raid" (federal prosecution of polygamists) led Mary and Elias Morris to hide their marriage on "the underground," and her to perjury in court during Elias's trial for unlawful cohabitation. The book ends with Mary Lois's arrival at the Salt Lake Depot after three years in exile in Mexico with a polygamist colony. The San Rafael Swell is an anticline, or a geological uplift, that originally looked like an oval bowl turned upside down. Over time it has been carved into castle-like formations and deep canyons by erosive conditions. This landscape seemed so formidable to early cartographers that it was the last area in the continental United States to be mapped. The San Rafael Swell itself has no permanent human inhabitants, but small towns are scattered along its northern and eastern borders where first American Indians and later cowboys, ranchers, and miners made their homes. The hardy settlers of these towns familiarized themselves with what they called the Desert and gradually discovered its treasures and its secrets.Author: The Emery County Archives Paperback: 128 pages Company: Arcadia Publishing (2008-03-19) (2008-03-24) ISBN: 0738548375 List Price: $21.99 Amazon Price: $14.87 Used Price: $15.11
In this volume, the editor and authors endeavor to write the history of Utah's first residents from an Indian perspective. An introductory chapter provides an overview of Utah's American Indians and a concluding chapter summarizes the issues and concerns of contemporary Indians and their leaders. Chapters on each of six tribes look at origin stories, religion, politics, education, folkways, family life, social activities, economic issues, and important events. They provide an introduction to the rich heritage of Utah's native peoples.Author: Forrest Cuch Paperback: 416 pages Company: Utah Division of Indian Affairs and the Utah Historical Society (2004-01) ISBN: 0913738492 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $26.80 Used Price: $25.00

The author of the New York Times bestseller The Idiot Girls’ Action-Adventure Club tackles her biggest challenge yet: grown-up life.In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie Notaro tries painfully to make the transition from all-night partyer and bar-stool regular to mortgagee with plumbing problems and no air-conditioning. Laurie finds grown-up life just as harrowing as her reckless youth, as she meets Mr. Right, moves in, settles down, and crosses the toe-stubbing threshold of matrimony. From her mother's grade-school warning to avoid kids in tie-dyed shirts because their hippie parents spent their food money on drugs and art supplies; to her night-before-the-wedding panic over whether her religion is the one where you step on the glass; to her unfortunate overpreparation for the mandatory drug-screening urine test at work; to her audition as a Playboy centerfold as research for a newspaper story, Autobiography of a Fat Bride has the same zits-and-all candor and outrageous humor that made Idiot Girls an instant cult phenomenon. In Autobiography of a Fat Bride, Laurie contemplates family, home improvement, and the horrible tyrannies of cosmetic saleswomen. She finds that life doesn't necessarily get any easier as you get older. But it does get funnier. The Star--The public saw her as a gifted child star: the youngest actor to win an Oscar for her role as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker and the youngest actor to have a prime-time television series bearing her own name. The Nightmare--What the public did not see was Anna Marie Duke, a young girl whose life changed forever at age seven when tyrannical mangers stripped her of nearly all that was familiar, beginning with her name. She was deprived of family and friends. Her every word was programmed, her every action monitored and criticized. She was fed liquor and prescription drugs, taught to lie to get work, and relentlessly drilled to win roles. The Legend--Out of this nightmare emerged Patty Duke, a show business legend still searching for the child, Anna. She won three Emmy Awards and divorced three husbands. A starring role in Valley of the Dolls nearly ruined her career. She was notorious for wild spending sprees, turbulent liaisons, and an uncontrollable temper. Until a long hidden illness was diagnosed, and her amazing recovery recovery began. The Triumph-- Call Me Anna is an American success story that grew out of a bizarre and desperate struggle for survival. A harrowing, ultimately triumphant story told by Patty Duke herself--wife, mother, political activist, President of the Screen Actors Guild, and at last, a happy, fulfilled woman whose miracle is her own life. This book tells the life & death story of a little town in south central Utah. Clear Lake was situated along the Union Pacific Railway line about halfway between Delta and Milford. Life began in the late winter of 1880, when railway crews working south first built a raillway grade through what would later be a town. Tracks were layed a month or so later. Soon after the arrival of the tracks, the descision was made to make this site the arrival and/or departure point for residence of the Fillmore area. Soon a caravansari-type lodging and a post office were set up. In the 1890's, more passengers were arriving or departing to and from Fillmore, located to the east. Also, dams and an irrigation system were set up just to the west. In the early 1900's, a canal was built from a large spring and small lake about 7-8 kms east of the tracks, which brought water to Clear Lake town and an alfalfa growing ranch was set up. Also, beginning in the late 1890's, a store was built which catered tp sheepmen who roamed Utah's West Desert during the winter months. Later the Bond family bought the store & hotel and combined them into one building. The town never got very large; there was always a crew of men working on the railroad, several ranch hands at The Ranch, the Bond family at the store & hotel, and a Quaker family by the last name of John. The John family, consisted of 6 daughters, lived there about 40 years altogether. The beginning of the end of Clear Lake occurred when the State of Utah condemed the water for the town and made plans for a wildlife refuge to the east where you will now find a real lake and swampy area with lost of waterfowl and wildlife. Town residents took the State to court, but lost. Although they were given some money, the town couldn't survive without water. The post office was officially closed on December 31, 1936. All buildings were either torn down or transported to other nearby towns. The story of Clear Lake is told mostly by former resident's own personal experiences, most of whom are now dead. Also included is a rather complete list of all former school teachers and station agents, as well as the addresses of about half of Clear Lakes buildings, many of which are still standing in nearby towns.
A month prior to the April 1984 general conference, Ardeth Greene Kapp had an undeniable impression that a major calling loomed on the horizon. When the call came to serve as Young Women general president, she approached it with the same faith and optimism that has always been a hallmark of her life. As a young girl in the rural prairie town of Glenwood, Alberta, Canada, she could not have anticipated the experiences that awaited her in the farthest reaches of the world. "When I was young," Ardeth recalls, "I thought the noblest thing in this life was to be a mother. I have since learned that the best mission in life is the one the Lord has prepared for me." This intimate portrayal captures the joys and challenges in a life that did not follow the expected path, but that prepared a woman to fulfill a mighty role in the Lord's kingdom.Author: Anita Thompson Hardcover: 389 pages Company: Deseret Book Co (2005-11-30) ISBN: 1590384881 List Price: $22.95 Amazon Price: $3.95 Used Price: $0.40

Between 1890 and 1930, Salt Lake City experienced some of the most rapid and profound changes of any city in U.S. history. In its pioneer period, from the beginning of white settlement in 1847 to about 1890, the city struggled against outside pressures to maintain its identity as a self-sufficient Mormon utopian community, with its theocratic government, agricultural economy, and polygamous society. But by the turn of the 20th century, Mormonism had largely abandoned those features, and Salt Lake City was becoming like most other American cities as it embraced capitalism, the evolution of transportation and industry, ethnic and cultural diversity, women’s rights, and modern entertainment.Author: Gary Topping, Melissa Coy Ferguson, Utah State Historical Society Paperback: 128 pages Company: Arcadia Publishing (2009-05-20) (2009-05-25) ISBN: 0738570745 List Price: $21.99 Amazon Price: $11.33 Used Price: $11.33 Author: Utah State Historical Society

San Juan County was established in 1880 following the famous winter trek and steep descent through the Hole-in-the-Rock Trail to Bluff, Utah. Behind the settlement of this community by the San Juan River is a story of tenacity, determination, and hardship. The Hole-in-the-Rock was a sandstone crevice discovered fortuitously by pioneers when a wild ram escaped its pursuers and descended to the river by that route. After blasting, building up the grade, and lowering by ropes, the wagon train finally emerged through the crevice to the river below and finished the last difficult miles into Bluff. Miner and photographer Charles Goodman documented the early days of San Juan County, from the production of bricks and molasses to the establishment of Bluff Oil Company, and many of his unique images, dating from 1892 to 1913, are included in this volume.Author: LaVerne Tate, San Juan County Historical Society Paperback: 128 pages Company: Arcadia Publishing (2008-09-10) (2008-09-15) ISBN: 0738556491 List Price: $19.99 Amazon Price: $15.04 Used Price: $15.03
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910. Excerpt: ... safest way under the circumstances; for if Jan. 1, 1721, alone is put, it would be understood by those conversant, to mean, the historical year 1722. Study the arrangement from a printed register first, and master the subject thoroughly. The plan is almost invariably the same all over England. Surnames are written both with, and without a final "s." Other variations in spelling often differ widely. I have selected a few from a small parish, as examples. They undoubtedly refer to the same families. The index to a printed register will show extraordinary combinations. Note the letters u, v, w, and i, j, y; they are often used interchangeably: as Euans for Evans, vnett for Unett, Beniamen and iohn, or Ihon. Proper names do not always begin with a capital. Books are catalogued under author's or editor's name. To find the printed registers, see "Contemporary Index," by G. F. Matthews; Key to the Par. Reg., by A. M. Burke; Genealogist's Guide, by W. Marshall, there is also one by the same author, printed for the Par. Reg. Soc. Other works of reference are: Manual for the Genealogist, etc., and Index to the Herald's Visitations, by R. Sims. How to write the history of a family, with Supplement, by W. P. W. Phillimore. Modern English Biography, by F. Boase. British Topography, by J. P. Anderson. Original lists of Emigrants (1600-1700), by J. C. Hotten. Homes of family surnames in Gt. Britain, by Guppy. Surnames and place names in the Isle of Man, by A. W. Moore; and similar works by Barber, Bardsley, Ferguson, and Lower. Index to printed pedigrees, by J. Coleman. Records and record searching, by W. Rye. From these, the names of hundreds of other works can be obtained. From the supplier: Relations between religion and politics are similar in Israel and Utah, suggesting both the importance and limitations of religion as a political factor. The Jewish leaders in Israel and the Mormon leaders in Utah exert only moderate influence both over their congregations in doctrinal matters and over public policies affecting the broader society. The religious communities are characterized by a plurality of practice and by a limit to the political power of their religious authorities. From the supplier: The Medical Illustration Dept at the University of Utah's Medical Center uses Aldus Corp's Persuasion as its principal presentation software program. To a lesser extent, other Aldus products such as FreeHand, PageMaker and PhotoStyler are also utilized. A staff of illustrators, artists and photographers meet the diverse needs of the medical and nursing faculty by turning out an average of 240 to 300 color slides each week. On the hardware end, the department utilizes an Apple Macintosh IIci microcomputer with a 280Mbyte drive, along with a slide and flatbed scanner and a 4,000-line-resolution imaging camera. Computer graphics specialists at the department say that Persuasion is easy to use and turns out slides rapidly. It features an outline formatter and can format slides automatically through built-in templates. Citation Details Title: Department creates slides for faculty presentations.
