Mark Twain once derided the Book of Mormon as "chloroform in print." Long and complicated, written in the language of the King James version of the Bible, it boggles the minds of many. Yet it is unquestionably one of the most influential books ever written. With over 140 million copies in print, it is a central text of one of the largest and fastest-growing faiths in the world. And, Grant Hardy shows, it's far from the coma-inducing doorstop caricatured by Twain. In Understanding the Book of Mormon, Hardy offers the first comprehensive analysis of the work's narrative structure in its 180 year history. Unlike virtually all other recent world scriptures, the Book of Mormon presents itself as an integrated narrative rather than a series of doctrinal expositions, moral injunctions, or devotional hymns. Hardy takes readers through its characters, events, and ideas, as he explores the story and its messages. He identifies the book's literary techniques, such as characterization, embedded documents, allusions, and parallel narratives. Whether Joseph Smith is regarded as author or translator, it's noteworthy that he never speaks in his own voice; rather, he mediates nearly everything through the narrators Nephi, Mormon, and Moroni. Hardy shows how each has a distinctive voice, and all are woven into an integral whole. As with any scripture, the contending views of the Book of Mormon can seem irreconcilable. For believers, it is an actual historical document, transmitted from ancient America. For nonbelievers, it is the work of a nineteenth-century farmer from upstate New York. Hardy transcends this intractable conflict by offering a literary approach, one appropriate to both history and fiction. Regardless of whether readers are interested in American history, literature, comparative religion, or even salvation, he writes, the book can best be read if we examine the text on its own terms. Over the years, Book of Mormon scholars have noticed extraordinary clues hidden in its subtle details. Many of these have proven the source of convincing evidence that the Book of Mormon is a genuine history. This outstanding work by a scholar of Middle Eastern antiquities presents some of that evidence. Included are insights about discoveries made since the time of Joseph Smith that suggest the ancient existence and nature of "reformed Egytptian;" newly discovered texts that show Jeremiah really did testify of the Savior, as taught in the Book of Mormon; Old World writings that support the brother of Jared's idea of lighting Jaredite barges with stones touched by the Savior; evidence that Laban was involved in a conspiracy with the Elders in Jerusalem which was much like those of the Gadianton Robbers; the old-world profession of Lehi and his sons; some eye-opening similarities between the slaying of Laban by Nephi and the slaying of the Egyptian by Moses; the probable timing of the Savior's visit to the Nephites; the similarity of untranslated words in the Book of Mormon (like "ziff") to words in certain Middle Eastern languages; why oaths in the Book of Mormon were relied on in war, and ancient texts that uphold Nephi's teachings about Satan.

The Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood, as found in D&C 84:33-48, is an ideal focus for a scripture-based study of temple themes. These verses speak plainly about the highest blessings of the Melchizedek Priesthood. What may be less-appreciated is the clarity with which the same revelation describes the required sequence of ordinances through which individuals and families may qualify for exaltation. It is significant that this revelation was given in 1832, a decade before the Prophet began to teach many doctrines of the higher priesthood and the temple in plainness to the Saints in Nauvoo. The purpose of this book is to explore the meaning of the verses summarizing the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood in light of the ordinances required for exaltation. In matters of doctrine, the author has relied on what can be found in scripture and in statements of members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. To provide illustrations and additional background, he has drawn from a wealth of other sources. Written engagingly, and illustrated with carefully-selected images, this book is designed to encourage readers in their own study of priesthood doctrines and in their personal efforts to understand and keep their covenants.Author: Jeffrey M. This important book provides clear, complete answers to numerous challenges non-Mormons have raised about the LDS Church. Are LDS temple ordinances derived from Masonic ceremonies? Are Joseph Smith's seer stones evidence that Mormonism is based in occultic practices? Is there bad grammar in the first edition of the Book of Mormon? Questions such as these come from anti-Mormon antagonists. Some are maliciously presented by those who seek to discredit the LDS Church; others come from individuals who just want to know the truth. The author shows that Masonic rites are derived from ancient sources that contained remnants of true temple worship, and that they are similar to sacred early Christian initiation ceremonies which form the bases for the modern LDS temple service. The Prophet Joseph, he shows, was no different than Biblical prophets, when the same rules of prophetic utterance and fulfillment are applied equally. The author suggests that grammatical criticism of the Book of Mormon should also be applied to several New Testament books and accepted Greek New Testament translations, which also contain many grammatical errors. The charge of occult practices evaporates under serious scriptural research, in view of the recorded actions of the apostles of the early Church and the Savior himself. Other chapters also answer questions about LDS doctrines on the Atonement, blood atonement, forgiveness of sins, salvation by grace, baptism as an essential Christian ordinance, errors in the Bible, and the marital status of Jesus Christ. This is a fascinating book for personal reading enjoyment, and is an important reference work for missionaries and other teachers of gospel subjects.Author: Michael T. An experienced Freemason and award-winning psychologist provides a precise and engaging exploration of the core meaning and practices of Freemasonry for the new generation of people interested in joining the order, and those who are simply curious in the wake of recent media coverage. Entertaining books and movies often depict Freemasonry as a shadowy, mysterious, and possibly sinister organization, and the TV and magazine specials on Freemasonry that inevitably follow often leave us with more questions than answers. Mark E. Koltko-Rivera, a practicing thirty-second-degree Mason, has created a simple, authoritative, and easy-to-understand introduction to the history, rites, and meaning of Freemasonry. It may be the single most reliable short guide to Masonry, written by a widely recognized psychologist and scholar of esoteric history. Koltko-Rivera's trustworthy handbook explores all the basic issues around Masonry, like: *What is Freemasonry, and what is its history? *How does one become a Freemason? *What are some of the most important Masonic symbols? *What do Masons get from their involvement in Freemasonry? What changes does it make in their inner and outer lives? *What is it like to participate in the initiatory rituals of Freemasonry? *What are some of the great historical controversies and myths surrounding Freemasonry? *How is Masonry relevant today? The easiest scriptures to understand are the ones with stories. Several Church leaders have said that a key to understanding the Doctrine & Covenants is to know its story. This book tells that story. This is an uninterrupted narrative focused specifically on the Doctrine & Covenants. While many books have previously done a good job of telling church history, they are of limited use when it comes to the D&C because they rarely mention even half its sections. And while commentaries often do discuss the historical background of each section, they can only provide that background in chopped up little pieces that are themselves separated from the larger historical setting. The Historical Context of the Doctrine & Covenants solves those shortcomings. For the first time, every single section of the D&C is seamlessly woven into the larger fabric of Church history so that references to people, activities and circumstances make intuitive sense. This book immerses the reader in the historical background so it is not only understood, but also experienced. It quotes extensively from journals, correspondence, histories, speeches and interviews of dozens of early Church members, as well as from contemporary church records and newspapers. This book is well researched and documented. 353 pages of narrative are followed by 62 pages of footnotes (all active in the Kindle edition), 24 pages of bibliography, and (in the paper edition) 40 pages of index. It incorporates new information that only became available in 2010 with the publication of Joseph Smith’s first revelation book by the Joseph Smith Papers. Each section of the D&C is briefly summarized as part of the historical background for all the other sections that follow. These summaries point out when a section was written down in pieces, changes who is being addressed, or simply moves from one subject to another. They identify each revelation’s principal messages and reflect its train of thought. They discuss the extent to which each section circulated and was known to Church members. And these summaries identify relationships both with other sections and with the historical development of Mormon doctrine. Brigham Young said in a conference only 12 years after Joseph Smith’s death that “these revelations, after a lapse of years, become mystified to those who were not personally acquainted with the circumstances at the time they were given” and that “a portion of this congregation have not been personally acquainted with the early experience and travels of this church, and with the sayings and doings of the Prophet Joseph, and it may be that they do not fully understand what this revelation [D&C 58] really does mean.” (Journal of Discourses 3:333-34). This book demystifies the Doctrine & Covenants by relating the experience and travels of the Church so readers will understand what each section really does mean. Volume 1 covers D&C 1-70, 74, 107, 133, Moses, and Joseph Smith History. Volume 2 covering the remainder of the Doctrine & Covenants and Abraham will follow. Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Brigham," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Brigham in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Brigham when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Brigham, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.Author: Icon Group International Paperback: 272 pages Company: ICON Group International, Inc. A fine line divides scripture from non-scripture, writes Robert M. Price in American Apocrypha. Some books, not in the Bible, are as powerful as anything in the canon. At the same time, portions of the Bible were authored much later than the events they narrate by scribes who wrote under fictitious names. Clearly, the hallmark of scripture is not historical accuracy but its spiritual impact on individuals, and exclusion from the canon is not reason to dismiss a book as heretical. Consider the Book of Mormon, first published in 1830. The nature of this volume--its claim to ancient history, in particular--is the theme of nine ground-breaking essays in American Apocrypha. Thomas W. Murphy discusses the Book of MormonÂ’s view that American Indians are descendants of ancient Hebrews. In recent DNA tests, Native Americans have proven to be of Siberian ancestry; they show no signs of ancient Jewish or Middle Eastern descent. Nor is the Book of Mormon a traditional translation from an ancient document, writes David P. Wright, as indicated by the underlying Hebrew in the bookÂ’s Isaiah passages. Other contributors to American Apocrypha explore the evolution of ideas in the Book of Mormon during the course of its dictation. Editors Dan Vogel (author of Indian Origins and the Book of Mormon) and Brent Metcalfe (editor of New Approaches to the Book of Mormon) have chosen authors who represent a wide range of disciplines and perspectives: Robert Price edits the Journal of Higher Criticism, Thomas Murphy chairs the anthropology department at Edmonds Community College, and David Wright teaches Hebrew Bible at Brandeis University. They are joined by Scott C. Dunn; Edwin Firmage, Jr.; George D. Smith; and Susan Staker, all of whom explore what can and cannot be reasonably asserted about the Book of Mormon as scripture.

By divine design, rites, rituals, and ordinances are filled with symbolic meaning intended to help us better understand God s Plan. If we do not understand the symbols, we cannot fully understand our covenants. In this new book, author Alonzo L. Gaskill presents divers ancient and modern rituals which are illustrative of symbols and practices Latter-day Saints may recognize. The ordinances of the Gospel are both the vehicle by which we make covenants and also a means by which God seeks to teach us. This truly unique book will guide you to a richer understanding of, and appreciation for, what you hold sacred.Author: Alonzo L. Gaskill Hardcover: 320 pages Company: Cedar Fort, Inc. With over 100 million copies in print, the Book of Mormon has spawned a vast religious movement, but it remains little discussed outside Mormon circles. Now Terry L. Givens offers a full-length treatment of this influential work, illuminating the varied meanings and tempestuous impact of this uniquely American scripture.Givens examines the text's role as a divine testament of the Last Days and as a sacred sign of Joseph Smith's status as a modern-day prophet. He assesses its claim to be a history of the pre-Columbian peopling of the Western Hemisphere, and later explores how the Book has been defined as a cultural product--the imaginative ravings of a rustic religion-maker. Givens further investigates its status as a new American Bible or Fifth Gospel, one that displaces, supports, or, in some views, perverts the canonical Word of God. Finally, Givens highlights the Book's role as the engine behind what may become the next world religion. The most wide-ranging study on the subject outside Mormon presses, By the Hand of Mormon will fascinate anyone curious about a religious people who, despite their numbers, remain strangers in our midst. Late one night in 1823 Joseph Smith, Jr., was reportedly visited in his family's farmhouse in upstate New York by an angel named Moroni. According to Smith, Moroni told him of a buried stack of gold plates that were inscribed with a history of the Americas' ancient peoples, and which would restore the pure Gospel message as Jesus had delivered it to them. Thus began the unlikely career of the Book of Mormon, the founding text of the Mormon religion, and perhaps the most important sacred text ever to originate in the United States. Here Paul Gutjahr traces the life of this book as it has formed and fractured different strains of Mormonism and transformed religious expression around the world. Gutjahr looks at how the Book of Mormon emerged from the burned-over district of upstate New York, where revivalist preachers, missionaries, and spiritual entrepreneurs of every stripe vied for the loyalty of settlers desperate to scratch a living from the land. He examines how a book that has long been the subject of ridicule--Mark Twain called it "chloroform in print"--has more than 150 million copies in print in more than a hundred languages worldwide. Gutjahr shows how Smith's influential book launched one of the fastest growing new religions on the planet, and has featured in everything from comic books and action figures to feature-length films and an award-winning Broadway musical. Current facts about Mormonism *Over 11 million members. *Over 60,000 full-time missionaries---more than any other single missionary-sending organization in the world. *More than 310,000 converts annually. *As many as eighty percent of converts come from Protestant backgrounds. (In Mormon circles, the saying is, 'We baptize a Baptist church every week.') *Within fifteen years, the numbers of missionaries and converts will roughly double. *Within eighty years, with adherents exceeding 267 million, Mormonism could become the first world-religion to arise since Islam. You may know the statistics. What you probably don't know are the advances the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) is making in apologetics and academic respectability. With superb training, Mormon scholars outclass many of their opponents. Arguments against Mormon claims are increasingly refuted as outdated, misinformed, or poorly argued. The New Mormon Challenge is a response to the burgeoning challenge of scholarly Mormon apologetics. Written by a team of respected Christian scholars, it is free of caricature, sensationalism, and diatribe. The respectful tone and responsible, rigorous, yet readable scholarship set this book in a class of its own. The New Mormon Challenge recycles no previous material and duplicates no one's efforts. Instead, responding to the best LDS scholarship, it offers freshly researched and well-documented rebuttals of Mormon truth claims. Most of the chapter topics have never been addressed, and the criticisms and arguments are almost entirely new. But The New Mormon Challenge does not merely challenge Mormon beliefs; it offers the LDS Church and her members ways to move forward. The New Mormon Challenge will help you understand the intellectual appeal of Mormonism, and it will reveal many of the fundamental weaknesses of the Mormon worldview. Whether you are sharing the gospel with Mormons or are investigating Mormonism for yourself, this book will help you accurately understand Mormonism and see the superiority of the historic Christian faith. Outstanding scholarship and sound methodology make this an ideal textbook. The biblical, historical, scientific, philosophical, and theological discussions are fascinating and will appeal to Christians and Mormons alike. Exemplifying Christian scholarship at its best, The New Mormon Challenge pioneers a new genre of literature on Mormonism. The Editors Francis J. Beckwith (Ph.D., Fordham University), Carl Mosser (Ph.D. candidate, University of St. Andrews), and Paul Owen (Ph.D., University of Edinburgh) are respected authorities on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the authors of various books and significant articles on Mormonism. Their individual biographies as well as information on the book's contributors appear inside. With contributors including such respected scholars as Craig L. Blomberg, William Lane Craig, J. P. Moreland, and others, The New Mormon Challenge is, as Richard Mouw states in his foreword, 'an important event for both Protestant evangelicals and Mormons' that models 'to the evangelical community what it is like to engage in respectful and meaningful exploration of a viewpoint with which we disagree on key points.' 'In recent years, Mormon scholars have produced a body of literature that has been largely ignored by evangelicals. This current volume takes a giant step forward in correcting this oversight in a way that is both intellectually vigorous, yet respectful.' ---Ken Mulholland, President, Salt Lake Theological Seminary 'Intellectually serious evangelical responses to the faith of the Latter-day Saints have been depressingly rare. This book represents a significant contribution to a conversation that, really, has just begun.' ---Daniel Peterson, Brigham Young University; Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS) 'Finally we have a book from evangelicals in which the authors have madePaperback: 544 pages ISBN13: 9780310231943, Condition: New, Notes: BRAND NEW FROM PUBLISHER! 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If it existed in only one ancient copy, says John Tvedtnes, the Book of Mormon may have been unique. But in virtually every other way it resembles many ancient books. In this present volume, Tvedtnes shows perhaps fifty things about ancient records that must have been hilarious in 1830 but make perfect sense today: the ubiquity of intentionally hiding books in all kinds of ingenious containers made of many materials, including stone boxes and ceramic jars; books incised on obdurate surfaces, like metals, bones, and ivory; inked papyri and parchments treated with swaddling cloths soaked in cedar and citrus oils to prevent decay; many sealed and open records; waterproofing sealants like bitumen and white lime mortar; caves serving as repositories of treasures buried in many sacred mountains; the ancient perception of permanence and eternalism associated with the preservative functions of writers and guardians of written records. Many twentieth-century discoveries of ancient documents have made all of this visible.Author: John A. Every December we are surrounded by Christmas ads, songs, decorations, images, and movies that have little or nothing to do with Christ. Materialism or paganism can be seen in many Christmas traditions. Remembering Christ at Christmas shows: How these traditions can remind us of Christ and His scriptures. How different perspectives give the nativity story new meaning. How to use Advent trees and Advent calendars to remember the birth, life, teachings, attributes, and tender mercies of Christ at Christmas and throughout the year.Author: Monte F. In this important work, Michael T. Griffith answers criticisms of the Book of Mormon raised by anti-Mormon writers and presents numerous evidences of the veracity of that sacred text. This book documents a wide array of evidences of the Nephite record. Exciting new research developments are discussed in detail, including recent studies on archaeology and the Book of Mormon; computer wordprint tests; ancient near eastern language elements in the Nephite record; the geography of the Book of Mormon, and cultural parallels between ancient America and the Old World. This book also refutes challenges raised by critics against the Nephite record. The following are some of the anti-Mormon issues considered and answered herein: Bible passages in the Book of Mormon; Ethan Smith's View of the Hebrews and the nephite record; the Spaulding theory; alleged anachronisms in the Book of Mormon; Alma 7:10 and the place of the Savior's birth; supposed conflicts between archaeology and the Book of Mormon, and the accuracy and completeness of the Bible. Refuting the Critics is carefully researched and thoroughly documented. Well over two hundred sources are cited, including scores of scholarly works by recognized LDS and non-LDS experts in such fields as Near Eastern and Mesoamerican archaeology, biblical studies, early Christian history, and ancient languages. Yet, for all of the impressive evidence presented herein, the author is careful to point out that the most powerful confirmation of the Book of Mormon comes from the Holy Ghost. Easy to understand yet abundantly documented, this book strengthens faith in the Book of Mormon and will be a valuable missionary tool.Author: Michael T. Put simply, this book is about how the Book of Mormon teaches us to read the Book of Mormon. Such simplicity, however, belies the careful, complex reading initiated in An Other Testament. Spencer's work is disciplined by an unrivaled attention to the structural, thematic, and literary details of the Book of Mormon. His book is a primer on all we have afield to see and the richness of his reading implicitly chastens us for having failed even to look. Spencer argues for the importance of a typological reading of the Book of Mormon, and traces the tension between the two types of typological reading promoted by the Book of Mormon itself: one focused principally on connecting Christ to the world historical unfolding of the Israelite covenant, the other focused principally on connecting Christ to the everyday life of the individual believer. Any who are interested in a hermeneutics of Mormon scripture will find An Other Testament rich reading indeed.Author: M Spencer Joseph Hardcover: 210 pages Company: Salt Press LLC (2012-02-01) ISBN: 0983963622 List Price: $18.95 Amazon Price: $17.83 Used Price: $54.80

Renowned Book of Mormon explorer George Potter continues to wander the sands of the Middle East because, in his words, "I must." The latest result, Ten More Amazing Discoveries, makes us grateful that he does. Drawing upon years of research, study, and travel, he offers geographical support for Joseph Smith's assertion that the ancient Garden of Eden was located in the New World, not in the Old World. He offers a new, exciting theory on the landing site of Noah's Ark. He shows how Bible scholarship supports the authorship of the Book of Mormon. And he takes us in search of the "real" Mount Sinai and the trail of the Exodus. "Are these amazing discoveries?" asks the author. "To me they are pearls of truth that bring to life the sacred scriptures and confirm our faith." In Ten More Amazing Discoveries, George Potter takes us on a journey that, in the end, strengthens our testimonies with new insights into the Bible, the authenticity of the Book of Mormon, and the dealings of God with his children, both ancient and modern. |
