As a child with Tourette syndrome, Brad Cohen was ridiculed, beaten, mocked, and shunned. Children, teachers, and even family members found it difficult to be around him. As a teen, he was viewed by many as purposefully misbehaving, even though he had little power over the twitches and noises he produced, especially under stress. You may have heard about Tourette’s Syndrome from a number of places – movies or television is a common source for most people in their exposure to Tourette’s. You will often see young children, and sometimes adults, with this disorder portrayed in movies or on television, spouting obscenities in a fashion that may seem utterly baffling to most people; it is particularly baffling to those who are complete uneducated about the actual Syndrome, what it does, and why it does it.Even though you may not commonly encounter a person with Tourette’s Syndrome in your day-to-day life, it is still important to be well informed on what Tourette’s is and why it causes such behavior in those afflicted with the Syndrome. However, if you are dealing with children who have this Syndrome, your need for information on Tourette’s becomes increasingly more urgent. What is this Syndrome? What is causing the child to have these involuntary behavior actions? How are you to deal with it? Are there any treatment options you can seek? How are you, as a parent, caregiver, or close family friend, to deal with the child? What can and can’t you do with this child? How will it affect your ability to go out in public with this child? Do all Tourette’s afflicted children act the same way? Do they all have the same tics? As a parent with a child who has just recently shown signs of Tourette’s, you are undoubtedly feeling confused, frustrated, ignorant, and, let’s be honest, a little afraid. It’s not that you are afraid of your child, but you are definitely afraid for your child in his or her future. Calm down, take a deep breathe, and let this new information sinks in. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood that has traditionally been treated with medication. Although available, many mental health professionals are not familiar with an effective behavioral therapy for tic disorders. This therapist guide outlines a safe and scientifically proven treatment that can help sufferers of TS and other tic disorders effectively manage their tics and improve their quality of life. The treatment described is an 11-session package for children and adults (ages 9 and older). Psychoeducation about tic disorders is blended with multiple components of behavior therapy, including habit reversal training (HRT), relaxation training, and function-based treatments. The primary goal of this program is to teach the patient effective tic management skills rather than to cure the tic disorder. At the start of the program, you will work with your patient to create a hierarchy of tics to be addressed in treatment. Each week, a new tic will be targeted and an appropriate function-based intervention implemented. Tic management skills are supplemented with relaxed breathing and progressive muscle relaxation exercises to help the patient combat anxiety. Relapse prevention and booster sessions help reinforce the skills taught in therapy and give the patient a positive outlook for the future. Complete with step-by-step instructions for conducting sessions, as well as lists of materials needed and copies of necessary forms, this guide provides you with all the information you need to effectively administer treatment. This welcome guide explains how to treat tics and Tourette’s syndrome using natural and alternative therapies, from nutritional therapy, behavioral and counseling therapies, EEG biofeedback, and homeopathy to bodywork, energy medicine, and Chinese medicine. Author Sheila Rogers discusses categories of tics including spasmodic facial movements, eye blinking, mild sounds, and humming. She persuasively counters the medical establishment’s standard claim that such disorders are “mysterious” and based in genetics. The dramatic spike in cases, she argues, belies this explanation. Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette’s takes a closer look at the environmental factors and underlying physical imbalances that trigger these conditions’ symptoms. In this second edition to Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in NaturalTreatments, Rogers offers a detailed natural treatment plan. No more will patients have to rely on traditional, drug-based treatments that often carry multiple side effects. In eight sections, the book offers advice from medical experts, the latest reports in medical research, a checklist of common tic triggers, inspirational stories from families who have successfully conquered tics and Tourette’s, and practical worksheets for readers to use in their treatment and research. Each of the 23 chapters includes a place for notes and “Takeaway Tips” summarizing key points.Author: Sheila J.
