Amazon.com Books: "substance disorder"
In Recognition and Prevention of Major Mental and Substance Use Disorders, a team of distinguished participants addresses the problem of prevention of major mental and substance use disorders at many levels--from the DNA molecule to public policy--in order to show how prevention efforts should be informed by a better understanding of etiology and by a knowledge of indicators of vulnerability. The volume addresses issues that are critical precursors to the prevention of mental disorders and offers an understanding of factors that contribute to the disorders' development. The contributors review genetic methodologies and current findings in mental disorders and show how biological and psychosocial environmental variables may affect vulnerability. Chapters devoted specifically to lessons in prevention drawn from recent research into schizophrenia discuss the implications of prodromal studies and relationships between stress, critical periods, and the development of the disorder. The book includes contributions from NIH representatives on how basic scientific understanding of mental disorders can be translated into public policy. It also features chapters that describe cutting-edge projects in prevention research for Alzheimer's disease, drug dependence, antisocial behavior, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Each chapter reviews clinical implications, contributing to a volume that will benefit clinicians and researchers who share the goal of preventing these debilitating conditions. As expected, addicts reported significantly higher levels of stress, anxiety, depression and affect intensity and lower levels of NMR compared to non-addict controls. NMR was negatively correlated with stress, anxiety, depression and affect intensity. The findings indicate that mood self-regulation is impaired in addicts. Low NMR and high affect intensity may predispose to substance abuse and addiction, or alternatively may reflect chronic drug-induced affective dysregulation. Author: F.A. Thorberg, M. Dual diagnosis is the concurrent existence of substance misuse and psychiatric disorders in an individual. There has been an increase in the number of people being dual diagnosed and this impacts psychiatry services in primary care and general hospital settings. This book will provide practitioners with a comprehensive text on the contemporary issues of working with dual diagnosis patients from both clinical and theoretical perspectives.Paperback: 240 pages Company: Wiley-Blackwell (2002-01-28) ISBN: 0632056215 List Price: $76.99 Amazon Price: $51.11 Used Price: $11.92
Is integrated treatment a priority? A requirement? Do you attend lots of training? Buy lots of books? Yet find it a challenge to know exactly what to say to a psychiatric consumer with an addictive disorder or an addiction client with a psychiatric disorder? THE BASICS, SECOND EDITION is the complete solution with detailed lesson content and handouts for groups, topics and information for individual sessions, and comprehensive cross training education for mental health and chemical dependency professionals.
Integrating your treatment program, providing dual diagnoses educational material, and cross-training your staff doesn't get any easier than this! THE BASICS eliminates gaps. When a publication focuses first on training the professional, the professional must transfer the knowledge into a useful format and into conversational language. THE BASICS is the treatment by first providing ready to present material. A professional is then simultaneously cross-trained on psychiatric and substance disorders by learning literally how to provide treatment to the dually diagnosed population. With over 1,600 references, THE BASICS is a Consensus-Based Best Practice. It is specifically designed to match the evidence based best practices consistent with the CCISC Model (Minkoff & Cline), Stages of Change Model (Prochaska & DiClemente), and Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick). Treatment participants benefit by consistent psychoeducation in groups, in 1:1's, and throughout a system of care. Group participants benefit by practicing skills with the use of reproducible Worksheets. Professionals benefit by a detailed curriculum written in a "conversational style." Administration and staff benefit by drastically reducing hours devoted to program development. Direct service providers benefit by a continuity of material for group and 1x1's. Focusing on the provision of treatment--not the etiology or diagnosis--this book reviews the thinking of many professionals on a broad range of dual diagnosis issues. Topics include: the biology of addictive and psychiatric disorders; dual diagnosis in adolescents, minority populations, and women; relapse prevention strategies; and more.Author: Norman S. Miller M.D. Paperback: 288 pages Company: Hazelden (1994-08-16) ISBN: 0894869728 List Price: $15.95 Amazon Price: $39.99 Used Price: $0.76
People with mood disorders often have simultaneous problems with addiction, and those with substance abuse problems are especially susceptible to mood disorder. The treatment of such patients can be particularly complicated, and many receive treatment for only one of their disorders. In this book, fourteen clinicians discuss the extent of the problem, methods of assessment, typical courses, and treatments—including both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. They address the all-too-frequent necessity of proceeding with treatment before a clear diagnosis is known, and they claim that distinguishing between primary and secondary disorders is initially less critical than previously assumed. Contending that clinicians treating comorbid mood / substance problems must be both more flexible and more watchful than those treating either disorder alone, the authors also describe various models of care. Throughout the book, they provide differing points of view on such issues as the value of pharmacotherapy for those still abusing psychoactive substances. Written for those who treat addictions, including counselors, clergy, and employee assistance staff, as well as for traditional mental health professionals, Integrated Treatment for Mood and Substance Use Disorders is an invaluable reference for any clinician who works with dually diagnosed clients. As expected, clients (who were undergoing treatment for alcoholism, heroin addiction, amphetamine/cocaine addiction or cannabis abuse) reported higher levels of insecure attachment and fear of intimacy, and lower levels of secure attachment and differentiation of self, compared to controls. Insecure attachment, high fear of intimacy and low self-differentiation appear to characterize clients enrolled in addiction treatment programs. Such characteristics may reflect a predisposition to substance problems, an effect of chronic substance problems, or conceivably both. Author: F.A. Thorberg, M. In past years significant advances have been made in both the conceptualization and development of innovative program models providing integrated assessment and concommitant treatment for dually disordered patients. The purpose of this volume is to provide the reader with information about the most current ideas and clinical interventions available. Although many of the models presented here have been successful only in clinical trials, and efficacy is not yet confirmed by controlled research, the principles used in the development of these models hopefully will have value in assisting clinicians, managers, and planners who have an immediate need to provide services to this population. This is the 50th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Mental Health Services.Author: Kenneth Minkoff, Robert E. Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide is a basic overview of current evidence-based practices for treating co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, refers to individuals who have both a mental illness and a co-morbid substance use disorder. The literature suggests that utilizing an "integrated" approach to treatment, treating both disorders concurrently in a program with clinicians specially trained in mental illness and substance abuse, provides the best outcomes for this population. This book is designed to provide clinicians with the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively assess and treat co-occurring disorders.Author: John Smith Paperback: 128 pages Company: Jason Aronson, Inc. The adolescents who were living in housing services and had more delinquent behaviors presented more difficulties to adhere, to attend regularly, and to maintain a link with the day program. The presence of cocaine among the substance-related disorders predicted an irregular attendance. Conversely, the adolescents with more self-reported symptoms of anxious and depression revealed a better initial adherence, a more regular attendance, and a longer length of the treatment. Author: D. This eloquently simple text provides a “cutting edge” philosophy for those dealing with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare of individuals suffering from issues with chemical dependency. Diagnosis and Treatment of Substance Abuse follows the D.E.C.L.A.R.E model of treatment—a model in which each letter represents one of the seven bio-psychosocial modalities, or points of entry, for viewing the problems of a dependent client. This model takes the student through every phase of the acronym, which employs a therapeutic approach aimed at facilitating the improvement of drug-abusing behavior. Throughout the text, the student is provided with helpful suggestions regarding treatment impasses, assessing strengths and weaknesses, developing a treatment plan and prioritizing intervention strategies. Transcripts from actual sessions and case vignettes provide rich clinical material to the text. Also, the student/clinician is provided with actual clinical instruments, not seen in other books, to conduct assessment evaluations of clients. CONVENIENT SUPPLEMENT FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE OR INTERNSHIP USE WITH CLIENTS AVAILABLE! 3-hole punched clinical Assessment Instruments booklets are available separately (in bundles of 10) to conduct assessment evaluations of clients.
