Banishing Night Terrors And Nightmares: A Breakthrough Program to Heal the Traumas That Shatter Peaceful Sleep Far more serious than simple "bad dreams," night terrors is a condition that inflicts severe and long - lasting physical and psychological damage. The afflicted can be children or adults, and will exhibit such symptoms as violent kicking, striking out, and/or frenzied screaming during the sleep cycle. They may even leave their beds and exit the home without waking, and yet have no knowledge of this behaviour the next morning. Understandably, the impact upon sufferers' parents, siblings, and spouses can be devastating, leaving them fearful and exhausted and making relationships difficult. Unfortunately, there has been a tremendous amount of conflicting and often contradictory literature on this subject, and treatment options have been of only limited value.

A Good Sleep 4 Murder PROLOGUE

Spring had come early and a full moon lit up the charcoal sky in contrast of the stars that twinkled like a multitude of cubic zirconium. The suburbia neighborhood was quiet as the earth's clock rolled upon the midnight hour - all except for one house. Adam Duncan was raiding the refrigerator and the sound of glass breaking on the tile floor in the kitchen awakened his wife.

Adam was overweight by 175 pounds and a large portion of the food he ingested was in the middle of the night. His wife knew when he went back to bed his T-shirt would be soaked with milk and his hands would bear remnants of the late night snack.

It hadn't always been like that, but their divorce would be final in two days and Adam had not been able to persuade his wife to stay. Her plan was to complete moving out the next day and of course she would make sure to do so while he was home. And because Adam had lost his job, he was a captive audience.

The next morning Adam would talk with his wife again and tell her that he loved her. He would promise to stop the midnight raids on the fridge, but he couldn't truthfully assure her that his sleepwalking was over. However, that was of no consequence to him because he would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth. And what his wife believed or didn't believe was nowhere on his list of concerns.

You see, in the days preceding, Adam devised a diabolical plan that would alter his way of life and that of his wife. It was to be the first night of the rest of his life, and he would do anything to get what he wanted ... sleepwalking was only a tool ... the rest was up to him ...

Sleep Paralysis: A Guide to Hypnagogic Visions and Visitors of the Night Experienced by millions as supernatural assault, sleep paralysis (SP) often includes realistic, and often frightening, hallucinations that are projected into the waking world. In Sleep Paralysis: A Guide to Hypnagogic Visions and Visitors of the Night, these night visitations of ghosts, vampires-and even aliens-are honored afresh from the perspective of contemporary dream science. Although they can be terrifying, these visions can also be a reliable portal to other extraordinary states, including lucid dreaming, out-of-body experiences, and guided journeys to realms beyond our imagination. Sleep paralysis is the only print book that discusses sleep paralysis and its related dream visions from a how-to perspective -- a book for those who want to manage their SP or engage more confidently with this ancient lucid dreaming technique.

The Terror That Comes in the Night: An Experience-Centered Study of Supernatural Assault Traditions (Publications of the American Folklore Society)

David Hufford's work deals with the so-called Old Hag experience, a psychologically disturbing event in which a victim claims to have encountered some form of malign entity while dreaming (or awake). Sufferers report feeling suffocated, held down by some "force," paralyzed, and extremely afraid.

The experience is surprisingly common: the author estimates that approximately 15 percent of people undergo this event at some point in their lives. Various cultures have their own name for the phenomenon and have constructed their own mythology around it; the supernatural tenor of many Old Hag stories is unavoidable. Hufford, as a folklorist, is well-placed to investigate this puzzling occurrence.

Sleep Disturbances In Early Childhood (Understanding Early Childhood) Some children are difficult to get to sleep or keep asleep throughout the night. Such difficulties range from mild and occasional to severe and prolonged, and are referred to as “sleep disturbances,” “sleep problems” or “sleep disorders.”

Childhood sleep disturbances are seldom life threatening, but they can be draining for parents concerned about their child’s well-being as well as disrupt their own sleep to the point of exhaustion and frustration. At such times, what began as the child’s sleep problem hinders the parents’ sleeping patterns and produces parental feelings of anger, self-doubt and guilt – even conflict.

Recently, early childhood patterns of sleep have become a subject of scientific study. This has resulted in welcome, but incomplete, knowledge about the need for sleep and the disturbances caused by the lack of it. Although there is more to learn, clearly identifiable patterns of sleep disturbances and their causes have been confirmed – along with an understanding of the threats they pose to health. There also are a growing number of accredited clinics specializing in sleep disturbances.

Fortunately, most children do not need such highly specialized services. Some parents have “easy sleepers” with few or no problems at bedtime or throughout the night. Those parents who do encounter problems usually find ways to deal with them on their own, or with the help of a doctor or books and articles on the subject.

Most sleep disturbances arise from one or a combination of three causes: situation, development and habit. Opinion differs how best to deal with childhood sleep disturbances, particular “habitual” sleep disturbances. Therefore, parents would do well to carefully consider all points of view and choose a course that best serves them, perhaps with the counsel of their doctor.

On one thing, certainly, there is common agreement. Responding in a harsh or punitive manner to a child bothered by a sleep disturbance is inappropriate. As in other aspects of childrearing, firmness is sometimes required, but loving firmness is vastly different from harshness and abuse.
