Herd: How to Change Mass Behaviour by Harnessing Our True Nature "...fascinating. Like Malcolm Gladwell on speed."
—THE GUARDIAN

"HERD is a rare thing: a book that transforms the reader's perception of how the world works".
—Matthew D'Ancona, THE SPECTATOR

"This book is a must. Once you have read it you will understand why Mark Earls is regarded as a marketing guru."
—Daniel Finkelstein, THE TIMES

This paperback version of Mark Earls' groundbreaking and award winning book comes updated with new stats and figures and provides two completely revised chapters that deal with the rise of social networking.

Since the Enlightenment there has been a very simple but widely held assumption that we are a species of thinking individuals and human behaviour is best understood by examining the psychology of individuals. It appears, however, that this insight is plain wrong. The evidence from a number of leading behavioural and neuroscientists suggests that our species is designed as a herd or group animal. Mark Earls applies this evidence to the traditional mechanisms of marketing and consumer behaviour, with a result that necessitates a complete rethink about these subjects.

HERD provides a host of unusual examples and anecdotes to open the mind of the business reader, from Peter Kay to Desmond Tutu, Apple to UK Sexual Health programmes, George Bush to Castle Lager, from autism to depression to the real explanation for the placebo effect in pharmaceutical testing.

Creative Genius: An Innovation Guide for Business Leaders, Border Crossers and Game Changers Time and space. Genetics and robotics. Education and fashion. Possibilities limited only by our imaginations. The future is yours to create. Could you be the Leonardo da Vinci of our times?

Most ideas are incremental, quickly copied and suffocated by conventions. "Future back" thinking starts with stretching possibilities then makes them a reality "now forward". The best ideas emerge by seeing what everyone has seen, and thinking like nobody else. Newness occurs in the margins not the mainstream. Solutions emerge through powerful fusions of the best ideas into practical, useful concepts. Creative people rise up. Visionaries, border crossers and game changers. Engage your right brain, open your eyes, think more holistically... intuition rules.

From Apple to Blackberry, GE to Google, innovative companies stand out from the crowd not so much for their exceptional products, despite what one might assume, but for the way they challenge conventions, redefine markets, and change consumer expectations. Apple didn't just create the iPod; it envisioned the future of music and then made a product to service that future. And the same holds true for every highly innovative company. In Creative Genius, Peter Fisk presents ten tracks for innovation and provides business blueprints for making that innovation happen.

Creative Genius is inspired by the imagination and perspective of Leonardo da Vinci, in order to drive creativity, design and innovation in more radical and powerful ways. It includes practical tools ranging from scenario planning and context reframing to accelerated innovation and market entry, plus 50 tracks, 25 tools, and 50 inspiring case studies.

Creative Genius is "the best and last" in the Genius series by bestselling author Peter Fisk. Others include Business Genius, Marketing Genius and Customer Genius.

Denying AIDS: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience, and Human Tragedy Paralleling the discovery of HIV and the rise of the AIDS pandemic, a flock of naysayers has dedicated itself to replacing genuine knowledge with destructive misinformation—and spreading from the fringe to the mainstream media and the think tank. Now from the editor of the journal AIDS and Behavior comes a bold exposé of the scientific and sociopolitical forces involved in this toxic evasion. Denying AIDS traces the origins of AIDS dissidents disclaimers during the earliest days of the epidemic and delves into the psychology and politics of the current denial movement in its various incarnations. Seth Kalichman focuses not on the “difficult” or doubting patient, but on organized, widespread forms of denial (including the idea that HIV itself is a myth and HIV treatments are poison) and the junk science, faulty logic, conspiracy theories, and larger forces of homophobia and racism that fuel them. The malignant results of AIDS denial can be seen in those individuals who refuse to be tested, ignore their diagnoses, or reject the treatments that could save their lives. Instead of ignoring these currents, asserts Kalichman, science has a duty to counter them. Among the topics covered: Why AIDS denialism endures, and why science must understand it. Pioneer virus HIV researcher Peter Duesberg’s role in AIDS denialism. Flawed immunological, virological, and pharmacological pseudoscience studies that are central to texts of denialism. The social conservative agenda and the politics of AIDS denial, from the courts to the White House. The impact of HIV misinformation on public health in South Africa. Fighting fiction with reality: anti-denialism and the scientific community. For anyone affected by, interested in, or working with researchers in HIV/AIDS, and public health professionals in general, the insight and vision of Denying AIDS will inspire outrage, discussion, and ultimately action. The AIDS Conspiracy: Science Fights Back

Since the early days of the AIDS epidemic, many bizarre and dangerous hypotheses have been advanced to explain the origins of the disease. In this compelling book, Nicoli Nattrass explores the social and political factors prolonging the erroneous belief that the American government manufactured the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to be used as a biological weapon, as well as the myth's consequences for behavior, especially within African American and black South African communities.

Contemporary AIDS denialism, the belief that HIV is harmless and that antiretroviral drugs are the true cause of AIDS, is a more insidious AIDS conspiracy theory. Advocates of this position make a "conspiratorial move" against HIV science by implying its methods cannot be trusted and that untested, alternative therapies are safer than antiretrovirals. These claims are genuinely life-threatening, as tragically demonstrated in South Africa when the delay of antiretroviral treatment resulted in nearly 333,000 AIDS deaths and 180,000 HIV infections -- a tragedy of stunning proportions.

Nattrass identifies four symbolically powerful figures ensuring the lifespan of AIDS denialism: the hero scientist (dissident scientists who lend credibility to the movement); the cultropreneur (alternative therapists who exploit the conspiratorial move as a marketing mechanism); the living icon (individuals who claim to be living proof of AIDS denialism's legitimacy); and the praise-singer (journalists who broadcast movement messages to the public). Nattrass also describes how pro-science activists have fought back by deploying empirical evidence and political credibility to resist AIDS conspiracy theories, which is part of the crucial project to defend evidence-based medicine.

Then Man Created God: The Truth about Believing a Lie This book brilliantly answers several of life's questions that many people have but are too afraid to voice. The author is easy to understand as he walks the reader through the interconnecting philosophical pathways to turn the spotlight on the flaws and inconsistencies in many popularly held controversial beliefs - politics, religion, abortion, homosexuality, and more. It masterfully points out the pitfalls of believing a lie and the various techniques that people use to mislead us and control our lives. It helps you to properly analyze the dogmas that govern your life. The process helps to either reinforce those beliefs or invalidate them. This book is therefore a very powerful tool that helps everyone test the validity of a religion. It helps to cull false beliefs and protects against new erroneous ones. If after reading it people of faith still hold the same beliefs because the supporting irrefutable evidence they have pass the smell test, then they will feel more justified propagating their ideas. It helps to cement beliefs and make you more immune to brainwashing. This delightful book also highlights the fact we must never give control of the asylum to the inmates. It emphasizes that if we have already done so it is time to take it back. For more information or to contact us, visit us at: http://www.denjenpublishing.com

Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom: How Online Social Networking Will Transform Your Life, Work and World "If you want to understand why Wikipedia is changing the world, this book is a must read."
Jimmy Wales, Founder, Wikipedia

"This book is a must read for all - social activists, politicians or managers - who have an interest in understanding how our society is morphing."
Professor C.K. Prahalad, #1 Management Guru and author of Competing for the Future

Synopsis
The rise of social networks like Facebook, MySpace and Bebo is changing the way we see ourselves, how we interact with each other, how we work and how we do business on a daily basis. Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom explores the powerful forces driving the social networking revolution, the impact of these profound changes, and the far reaching consequences of social networking.

Detailing the way social networks affects both individuals and societies as a whole, the book offers a detailed focus on the ways social networking affects the world of business and work. The generation entering the workforce today - and entering boardrooms everywhere - is fully engaged with social networking and its uses. Rather than feeling threatened and paranoid, today's business leaders need to understand this phenomenon, accept that it won't go away, and embrace its power in the world of business.

Excerpts from Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom:
"Your next CEO’s most impressive job credential might be status as an online gladiator, honing valuable leadership skills mercilessly slaying mortal enemies on World of Warcraft. Why not, the skills necessary to hack your way to the top levels of virtual games – especially a killer instinct – are excellent pre-requisites for managing complex organisations."

"Many senior managers mistakenly believe Enterprise 2.0 is a product, like the latest Microsoft office suite. They don’t realise that Enterprise 2.0 is not a cost centre, but a “state of mind” – a revolutionary new way of managing companies and conducting business.

Web 2.0 tools have no regard for “organisational boundaries, hierarchies, or job titles”. Try telling a senior executive that, henceforth, there will be no job titles, reporting lines, and organisational boundaries in the company – and watch the reaction closely."

"When someone calls a meeting, he or she is asserting authority over those who are invited to attend. Meetings are exclusive and closed. In most corporations, who gets invited to a meeting – and who does not – sends a signal about who’s ‘in the loop’. Meetings are a form of social grooming inside organisations. Meetings impose vertical authority. They establish status hierarchies. The Enterprise 2.0 model is feared in corporations because it threatens status hierarchies."

"Harnessing the dynamism of horizontal networks, Web 2.0 social media are bypassing institutional forms of social organisation and directly empowering people. This book has attempted to tell that story with illustrations, which, we hope, have offered intriguing and instructive insights into the powerful transformations we described. What has interested us most, indeed, is the transformative impact – or “e-ruptions” – of Web 2.0 social media on the three dynamics that gave this book its structure: identity, status and power."

Performing Remains: Art and War in Times of Theatrical Reenactment

'At last, the past has arrived! Performing Remains is Rebecca Schneider's authoritative statement on a major topic of interest to the field of theatre and performance studies. It extends and consolidates her pioneering contributions to the field through its interdisciplinary method, vivid writing, and stimulating polemic. Performing Remains has been eagerly awaited, and will be appreciated now and in the future for its rigorous investigations into the aesthetic and political potential of reenactments.' - Tavia Nyong'o, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University

'I have often wondered where the big, important, paradigm-changing book about re-enactment is: Schneider’s book seems to me to be that book. Her work is challenging, thoughtful and innovative and will set the agenda for study in a number of areas for the next decade.' - Jerome de Groot, University of Manchester

Performing Remains is a dazzling new study exploring the role of the fake, the false and the faux in contemporary performance. Rebecca Schneider argues passionately that performance can be engaged as what remains, rather than what disappears.

Across seven essays, Schneider presents a forensic and unique examination of both contemporary and historical performance, drawing on a variety of elucidating sources including the "America" plays of Linda Mussmann and Suzan-Lori Parks, performances of Marina Abramovic´ and Allison Smith, and the continued popular appeal of Civil War reenactments. Performing Remains questions the importance of representation throughout history and today, while boldly reassessing the ritual value of failure to recapture the past and recreate the "original."

The Persecution of Sarah Palin: How the Elite Media Tried to Bring Down a Rising Star "A compelling account of journalistic malpractice on a grand scale. Those called out in this book should not be allowed to forget what they did."
-Brit Hume, senior political analyst, Fox News

Sarah Palin spent more than a decade making her town and her state better-she slashed government spending and corruption and encouraged economic growth. In 2008, she took to the national stage to bring her successful vision to the entire country. America quickly embraced her message, and Palin became the hottest rising star the country had seen in years.

Palin was a strong and popular conservative with traditional values- work, family, and religion-and Washington Democrats and their allies in the so-called mainstream media decided she had to be destroyed. These elite liberals attacked everything from Palin's clothing to her parenting style to her church.

They spread one malicious and untrue rumor after another. The media also treated Palin with such insulting condescension that it frequently lapsed into mockery. Palin was routinely ridiculed and vilified-and so was her family.

Continetti shows that the liberal media did succeed in one way: they were able to give the election to Barack Obama.

Sarah Palin vs. Jeb Bush: Inside their fight for control of the Republican Party "Sarah Palin vs. Jeb Bush: Inside their fight for control of the Republican Party" is a compelling and controversial exploration of the suspected deep rooted political rivalry between two of the GOP's biggest players and the Republican Party's most diametrically opposed factions - the centrists and the Tea Party patriots.

• The bad blood between the blue blood American political dynasty that is the Bush family and the Alaskan political sensation and conservative icon Sarah Palin.
• Sarah Palin and Jeb Bush's seemingly inevitable clash on the ballot or in repairing a broken party.
• How the 2012 Republican National Convention could end in deadlock and the respective roles Palin and Bush would likely play.
• Why the presidency may be unattainable for Republicans in 2012.
• The warring factions within the GOP that will soon yield a winner and shape the course of the party's platform and direction in the years ahead.

Sarah Palin and the Wasilla Warriors: The True Story of the Improbable 1982 Alaska State Basketball Championship

Long before the whole world knew Sarah Palin as “Momma Grizzly,” the handful of girls on her high school basketball team called their starting point guard Sarah “Barracuda” for the tenacious defense she played. Hers was the kind of determination that fit in well on a scrappy team from a small town where people were proud to call themselves Valley Trash and happy to take on the big-city schools to prove which team was really the best.

As beautiful as Alaska is, it’s also unforgiving. It’s a place where your first mistake may be your last. When the winter comes and the nights are long and the temperatures plunge, everyone starts looking for an escape. All across Alaska, those gyms—bright and warm—become a sanctuary not only for the players but for their isolated hometowns as well.

With Sarah Palin and the Wasilla Warriors, acclaimed sportswriter Mike Shropshire goes beyond Sarah Palin’s media profile to tell the incredible untold story of how she and a team of young women came together to overcome daunting odds as they battled their way to the Alaska state championship.

Sarah Palin: Out of Nowhere Sarah Palin Out of Nowhere is one of the most dynamic books any reader will ever read with an explosion of information. It reveals how Frank Aquila created, organized, and marketed a political grassroots organization called the South San Joaquin Republicans as a "political outsider" while working full time, coaching and raising two young boys as a single father just outside the liberal San Francisco Bay Area. Sarah Palin Out of Nowhere provides a biography of Governor Palin's life and her views on various issues. Frank reveals the actual email correspondence he had with the McCain campaign and the detailed telephone conversation he had prior to Senator McCain's announcement of Governor Palin as his vice presidential nominee. Frank explains why he lobbied for Governor Palin, how she electrified the presidential ticket and how Governor Palin has the same qualities of President Ronald Reagan. Frank reveals who the real media is and why they have been so hostile to Governor Palin and other conservatives. He compares and contrasts the media bias against Governor Palin as compared to the media protection and assistance to then Senator Barack Obama, exposing his past history and those who have influenced his political advancement. Frank inserts several letters throughout the book on a variety of issues including "Why I am a Republican", "The Collapse of Social Security", "The Abortion Business", "The Democrats Failure of Black America", "Who Caused This Economic Crisis?", "Democrats Energy Plan = High Gas", "Is America a Christian Nation?", "Why Amercia was attacked on September 11, 2011?", "Have We Forgotten September 11, 2001?" along with other articles. He also reveals the Communist Manifesto and their plan to change America into a nation controlled by the government. Frank shows how America is being pulled in two different directions: One from President Obama's view of large government controlling America in a socialist-communist style America and Governor Palin, who has become the face of the T.E.A. Party movement for a view of small government, similar to the principles of "limited government" established by our founding fathers through the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution. Finally, Frank offers his "Solutions for America" and explains what role Governor Palin will play in the future of America. This explosive book is a must have for any conservative to be informed on the issues and to use to fight back against large socialist style government and liberal philosophies. .

Going Rouge: The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book The November 17 release of Sarah Palin s new memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life, coincides with the launch of Going Rouge: The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book by new independent publisher TBTM Media. Satirist Micheal Stinson and political cartoonist Julie Sigwart have teamed up to create this parody, which mercilessly lampoons Sarah Palin, and skins her policies like she would a rogue moose.

The 48-page coloring book features puzzles, word games, and mazes, like "Help Sarah find her way to the White House" and "Where in the world does domestic Alaskan oil go?" The reader can help Sarah (dressed in fishing overalls) choose her fishing gear from: an axe, a chainsaw, a pistol, and a bomb. We've all heard Sarah's "I can see Russia from my house!" -- now here's your chance to color the Kremlin rouge from her kitchen.

When asked why he wanted to create this political cartoon parody about Palin, Stinson said, "We are environmentally conscious folks, and consider Sarah Palin a threat to ecosystems everywhere. She is continuing the disasterous legacy of George W. Bush, and is an epitome of the stereotypical 'Ugly American.' We wanted to show the real Sarah Palin, warts and all, who otherwise is just another slick, glossy PR machine invention." Stinson added, "Those Palin books, they're just a buncha words - ours has pictures! And, In the interest of fairness, we have a confession to make: Palin didn't write this book either."

The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Sarah Palin Late in life, William F. Buckley made a confession to Corey Robin. Capitalism is "boring," said the founding father of the American right. "Devoting your life to it," as conservatives do, "is horrifying if only because it's so repetitious. It's like sex." With this unlikely conversation began Robin's decade-long foray into the conservative mind. What is conservatism, and what's truly at stake for its proponents? If capitalism bores them, what excites them?

Tracing conservatism back to its roots in the reaction against the French Revolution, Robin argues that the right is fundamentally inspired by a hostility to emancipating the lower orders. Some conservatives endorse the free market, others oppose it. Some criticize the state, others celebrate it. Underlying these differences is the impulse to defend power and privilege against movements demanding freedom and equality.

Despite their opposition to these movements, conservatives favor a dynamic conception of politics and society--one that involves self-transformation, violence, and war. They are also highly adaptive to new challenges and circumstances. This partiality to violence and capacity for reinvention has been critical to their success.

Written by a keen, highly regarded observer of the contemporary political scene, The Reactionary Mind ranges widely, from Edmund Burke to Antonin Scalia, from John C. Calhoun to Ayn Rand. It advances the notion that all rightwing ideologies, from the eighteenth century through today, are historical improvisations on a theme: the felt experience of having power, seeing it threatened, and trying to win it back.

I Love Sarah Palin/I Hate Sarah Palin (I Love/I Hate)

Presented in a unique reversible-book format, this is the ultimate chronicle of the public reaction to a certain former Alaskan governor who is famous or infamous, depending on who is speaking. Both sides of the Sarah Palin argument find strong and unabashedly-biased voices in the book, including quotes and interviews with fascinating figures that include Glenn Beck, Rudy Giuliani, and Mitt Romney in the pro-Palin camp, and Conan O’Brien, Maureen Dowd, and James Carville to balance the discussion in the anti-Palin camp. Functioning as two books in one, this account of the fans and critics of Sarah Palin shows that when it comes to controversial and highly-publicized political personalities, there is no fine line between love and hate.

Key States, High Stakes: Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, and the 2010 Elections The 2010 elections were one of the most highly anticipated midterm elections in our nation's recent history. After the historic 2008 election, in which America elected its first black president, Sarah Palin's involvement and the emergence of the Tea Party in the 2010 congressional elections had the potential to transform the composition of congress and set the stage for the nation's politics for the next decade, or even the next generation. In this new edited volume, Charles S. Bullock III collects original contributions from top political scientists to evaluate Sarah Palin and the Tea Party's role in the 2010 midterm elections. Key States, High Stakes: Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, and the 2010 Elections focuses on states where Republicans had the chance to pick up Senate seats, as well as examining GOP Senate primaries if they involved a Palin or a Tea Party nominee facing an establishment favorite. Bullock concludes the anthology with a chapter on the legacy of the Tea Party and of Sarah Palin on American politics. One thing is certain. In terms of control of the House and Senate (and its effect on President Obama's policy agenda), the prospects for the 2012 presidential race, and the long-term viability of the Tea Party movement, the stakes in the 2010 midterm elections could not have been higher.

How Many Friends Does One Person Need?: Dunbar's Number and Other Evolutionary Quirks

Why do men talk and women gossip, and which is better for you? Why is monogamy a drain on the brain? And why should you be suspicious of someone who has more than 150 friends on Facebook?

We are the product of our evolutionary history, and this history colors our everyday lives—from why we joke to the depth of our religious beliefs. In How Many Friends Does One Person Need? Robin Dunbar uses groundbreaking experiments that have forever changed the way evolutionary biologists explain how the distant past underpins our current behavior.

We know so much more now than Darwin ever did, but the core of modern evolutionary theory lies firmly in Darwin’s elegantly simple idea: organisms behave in ways that enhance the frequency with which genes are passed on to future generations. This idea is at the heart of Dunbar’s book, which seeks to explain why humans behave as they do. Stimulating, provocative, and immensely enjoyable, his book invites you to explore the number of friends you have, whether you have your father’s brain or your mother’s, whether morning sickness might actually be good for you, why Barack Obama’s 2008 victory was a foregone conclusion, what Gaelic has to do with frankincense, and why we laugh. In the process, Dunbar examines the role of religion in human evolution, the fact that most of us have unexpectedly famous ancestors, and why men and women never seem able to see eye to eye on color.

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime

“This shit would be really interesting if we weren’t in the middle of it.”—Barack Obama, September 2008

In 2008, the presidential election became blockbuster entertainment. Everyone was watching as the race for the White House unfolded like something from the realm of fiction. The meteoric rise and historic triumph of Barack Obama. The shocking fall of the House of Clinton—and the improbable resurrection of Hillary as Obama’s partner and America’s face to the world. The mercurial performance of John McCain and the mesmerizing emergence of Sarah Palin. But despite the wall-to-wall media coverage of this spellbinding drama, remarkably little of the real story behind the headlines has yet been told.

In Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the country’s leading political reporters, use their unrivaled access to pull back the curtain on the Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Palin campaigns. How did Obama convince himself that, despite the thinness of his rÉsumÉ, he could somehow beat the odds to become the nation’s first African American president? How did the tumultuous relationship between the Clintons shape—and warp—Hillary’s supposedly unstoppable bid? What was behind her husband’s furious outbursts and devastating political miscalculations? Why did McCain make the novice governor of Alaska his running mate? And was Palin merely painfully out of her depth—or troubled in more serious ways?

Game Change answers those questions and more, laying bare the secret history of the 2008 campaign. Heilemann and Halperin take us inside the Obama machine, where staffers referred to the candidate as “Black Jesus.” They unearth the quiet conspiracy in the U.S. Senate to prod Obama into the race, driven in part by the fears of senior Democrats that Bill Clinton’s personal life might cripple Hillary’s presidential prospects. They expose the twisted tale of John Edwards’s affair with Rielle Hunter, the truth behind the downfall of Rudy Giuliani, and the doubts of those responsible for vetting Palin about her readiness for the Republican ticket—along with the McCain campaign staff’s worries about her fitness for office. And they reveal how, in an emotional late-night phone call, Obama succeeded in wooing Clinton, despite her staunch resistance, to become his secretary of state.

Based on hundreds of interviews with the people who lived the story, Game Change is a reportorial tour de force that reads like a fast-paced novel. Character driven and dialogue rich, replete with extravagantly detailed scenes, this is the occasionally shocking, often hilarious, ultimately definitive account of the campaign of a lifetime.

Word Hero: A Fiendishly Clever Guide to Crafting the Lines that Get Laughs, Go Viral, and Live Forever Yes, it’s true: you can learn how to be a verbal wizard!

Ever hear someone utter an unforgettable phrase and feel yourself reacting with with…well, awe?  Ever read a great quote and think I could never come up with anything that clever?

Daunting as it may seem, there’s nothing mystical about witcraft.  Crafting memorable lines doesn’t require DNA-encoded brilliance. What it does require is some knowledge of the tricks and techniques that make words stick.

In Word Hero, Jay Heinrichs rescues the how-to of verbal artistry from cobwebbed textbooks and makes it entirely fresh – even a little mischievous.  Fear not: on offer here are not dry, abstract ideas couched in academic jargon.  Rather, Heinrichs takes you on an amusing – and amazingly helpful – tour of the mechanisms that make powerful language work.  You’ll learn how to slyly plant your words in people’s heads and draw indelible verbal pictures by employing such tools as “crashing symbols,” “rapid repeaters,” “Russian Dolls” and even the powers of Mr. Potato Head.

With those tools and others tucked in your utility belt, you might not immediately achieve “wordsmith immortality” but you will become a better speaker, writer, and raconteur…and long after people have forgotten everything else, they’ll remember your priceless lines.

YouTube: Online Video and Participatory Culture (DMS - Digital Media and Society) YouTube is one of the most well-known and widely discussed sites of participatory media in the contemporary online environment, and it is the first genuinely mass-popular platform for user-created video. In this timely and comprehensive introduction to how YouTube is being used and why it matters, Burgess and Green discuss the ways that it relates to wider transformations in culture, society and the economy.
The book critically examines the public debates surrounding the site, demonstrating how it is central to struggles for authority and control in the new media environment. Drawing on a range of theoretical sources and empirical research, the authors discuss how YouTube is being used by the media industries, by audiences and amateur producers, and by particular communities of interest, and the ways in which these uses challenge existing ideas about cultural ‘production’ and ‘consumption’.
Rich with both concrete examples and featuring specially commissioned chapters by Henry Jenkins and John Hartley, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in the contemporary and future implications of online media. It will be particularly valuable for students and scholars in media, communication and cultural studies.

Personal Faith, Public Policy: The 7 urgent issues that we, as people of faith, need to come together and solve.
Harry Jackson and Tony Perkins believe that America stands at a crossroads. As a nation we must choose God's blessings or His destruction of our society. The "Religious Right," as it has been termed, often looks to the world as its enemy, and many Christians have seen themselves as combatants in war against anti-God forces. In Personal Faith, Public Policy, Jackson and Perkins take a radical new position, stating that the Christian church must lead morally and impact the culture with personal spiritual power and unified Christian public policy, demonstrating how a unified church can tackle each one of the seven major problems of our culture. Achieving victories in each of the seven areas presented will result in vanquishing the big problem facing our country-moral decay. Show Less

Mud-Slugging 2008: A Presidential Star Is Born (My Account of the 2008 Election) Cover Art designed by Susie Q. Public

Mud-Slugging 2008: A Presidential Star is Born is a satirical memoir of my personal views of the biased electoral process. I am a citizen who knows absolutely nothing about politicks. I am a baby-boomer. The whole smoke and mirrors of politicks never interested me until we had a girl running, namely Hilary Clinton. Go Hilary!

I believe that Hilary was the one and only candidate for the job but the media-o-cracy didn't quite spin it that way. They crucified her. She was the sacrificial lamb. Sexism is alive and well and prevails all over the world, including the Free World. The Free World, which is not free at all...it's expensive and gets more so all the time!

Everything was Obama this or Obama that. The first African-American nominated...excuse me...I think, me thinks, that a woman running for President was far more exciting than having a know-nothing-do-nothing Vaudevillian Flim-Flam man who said and whispered a whole lot of nothings to get into office...after all he is and was just "another man." Just another guy. Nothing special.

And about Johnny Bad Boy McSame? Well Republicans were not too popular after an eight year reign. I commend his Fighting Irish Spirit and his Straight Talk Express plus his very affirmative "No to DoubleSpeak." Perhaps if he and Hilary were on the same side, I would have actually gone out to vote.

Anyway, all I did was write my opinion of the whole ruckus, backbiting and backstabbing - the Olympics of Politicks to get someone in the Oral Office. I wrote a piece from Feb. 19th. to August 29th, 2008. The whole hilarious affair was the best reality show I have ever had the priviledge and honor to witness on an almost daily basis.

No wonder shows like Comedy Central and Saturday Night Live had a ball with this election. Who needs American Idol or another reality show that is so unrealistic when your have American Politicks...the best comedy on the planet!

I wrote this political satire memoir to entertain. I wish all the candidates well. What I don't understand is how everyone wants PEACE on the Planet, yet none of them, the frontrunners, could cooperate or be peaceful with each other??? What a conundrum? Can't we all just get along???

Anyway, I can't wait until the next erection/election so I can exercise my right to Freedom of Thought in the Free World...which is not Free but very expensive. I thank you for purchasing this book. May it have you LOL and thinking more deeply about the whole Theatrics of Politicks - American Style.

Sincerely and with Lots of Love

The 2008 Presidential Campaign: A Communication Perspective (Communication, Media, and Politics) Presidential campaigns are our national conversations—the widespread and complex communication of issues, images, social reality, and personas. In 2008, more people participated in the conversation, as voter numbers in every demographic group increased to levels of the 1970s.

Here, political communication specialists break down the historic 2008 presidential campaign and go beyond the quantitative facts, electoral counts, and poll results of the election. Factoring in everything from the campaign in popular culture, political cartoons, and the effect of celebrity, the authors look at the early campaign period, the nomination process and conventions, the social and political context, the debates, the role of candidate spouses, candidate strategies, political advertising, and the use of the Internet. This enlightening book shows why more technology doesn't always mean more effective communication and how, as we attempt to make sense of our environment, we collect "political bits" of communication that comprise our voting choices, worldviews, and legislative desires.

The Nightly News Nightmare: Media Coverage of U.S. Presidential Elections, 1988-2008 The Nightly News Nightmare, Third Edition, examines news coverage of presidential nomination and election campaigns from 1988 to 2008. The book focuses on changes in the amount, tone, and focus of news coverage in these different electoral contexts. In addition to network news, the authors examine online news, cable television, talk radio, candidate campaign discourse in these election years. Farnsworth and Lichter find that the news media, despite the wide variety of outlets, have consistent problems in terms of fairness and focus on substantive matters rather than the horse-race reporting of the latest polls. In addition to the extensive discussion of the 2008 campaign, the third edition offers far more discussion and evidence regarding the use of alternative media, including online content, in the most recent presidential election. The authors conclude that online news had many of the same problems found in mainstream news coverage.

The Progressive's Guide to Raising Hell: How to Win Grassroots Campaigns, Pass Ballot Box Laws, and Get the Change We Voted For-- A Direct Democracy Toolkit Change is no simple matter in American politics-a fact that Americans have recently learned well. Elections rarely produce the change they promise. After the vote, power vacuums fill with familiar values, if not faces. Promises give way to fiscal realities, hope succumbs to pragmatism, and ambition concedes to inertia. The old tricks of interest groups - confuse, diffuse, scare - prevail over the better angels of American nature.

But populist energy can get change making and change-makers back on the right track.

The key to success, though, says acclaimed consumer advocate Jamie Court, is getting downright mad. It's anger, not hope, that fuels political and economic change. And in 2010 America, anger rules. But it needs to be vectored and focused if it is to succeed in fueling the type of change that the majority of Americans believe in.

If we want that change, the kind that polls show 60 percent of Americans believe in, we need to do more than vote every two to four years or wait for a new president to learn the tactics of confrontation. The Progressive's Guide to Raising Hell is a road map filled with concrete tips and rules of the road that average people can use to force change between elections.

How can progressives get what they believed they voted for? Court, a longtime organizer of ballot campaigns and other initiatives, tells readers how to heat up their issue, take grassroots action, organize their community, use publicity to their advantage, employ internet and social media to build support, and get the change they want.

A HISPANIC VIEW: THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN & CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA Contemporaneous views of the 2008 Presidential campaign with commentary of the pre-convention primary candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties. After each published column, comments are made in retrospect.

Once Barack Obama became the obvious Democratic candidate, his policies, campaign statements and promises were looked at closely. So were polls and debates.

The column written the day after the election comes across as surprisingly prescient when looked at two years later.

Candidate Obama proved to be very good. Candidate McCain came over less than expected but contrary to normal Presidential politics he refused to hang radical and commonly detested Black Nationalist Reverend Jeremiah Wright around Obama's neck, despite Obama's claim to have attended Wright's church for 20 years.

Combining McCain's kid glove treatment of Obama with the financial collapse that started on September 15 with the collapse of Lehman Brothers, McCain never had a chance after the middle of September despite his brilliant choice of Sara Palin as his running mate.

Obama won. It appears two years later that the country may have lost for he has failed as President through September of 2010 and his "accomplishments" are being rejected by the people.

His approval rating at the end of September hovers around 40-43 percent, ten points less than the percentage of people who voted for him.

Independents who voted for him and made him President have dropped him.

In Volume 3, we will examine his first year in office.

Also American politicians in the United States very often refer in their speeches to American freedoms. Therefore, in this paper, I focus on the qualitative content analysis of the 2008 US presidential campaign speeches to investigate how the concepts of freedom are used in America and how they are translated into practice in candidates’ policies. Moreover, the purpose of this work is to explore the complex relationship between progressive and conservative notions of freedom on the American political scene today. Reflecting on the speeches delivered by the presidential candidates, it aims to answer the following questions: how the conservative and progressive notions of freedom differ, whether the nominees of the Democratic and Republican Parties, Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain, conformed to them in their statements, or have Democrats and Republicans lost their distinct perspectives on the notion of freedom, now speaking a common language.

The American Campaign: U.S. Presidential Campaigns and the National Vote Reporting data and predicting trends through the 2008 campaign, this classroom-tested volume offers again James E. Campbell's "theory of the predictable campaign," incorporating the fundamental conditions that systematically affect the presidential vote: political competition, presidential incumbency, and election-year economic conditions.

Campbell's cogent thinking and clear style present students with a readable survey of presidential elections and political scientists' ways of studying them. The American Campaign also shows how and why journalists have mistakenly assigned a pattern of unpredictability and critical significance to the vagaries of individual campaigns.

Political Campaigning, Elections and the Internet: Comparing the US, UK, France and Germany (Routledge Research in Political Communication)

The Internet first played a minor role in the 1992 U.S. Presidential election, and has gradually increased in importance so that it is central to election campaign strategy. However, election campaigners have, until very recently, focused on Web 1.0: websites and email.

Political Campaigning, Elections and the Internet contextualises the US Presidential campaign of 2008 within three other contests: France 2007; Germany 2009; and the UK 2010. In offering a comparative history of the use of the Internet as an election tool, the authors are able to test the optimistic view that the Internet is transforming elections while also mapping the role the Internet plays and performs for parties and candidates. Lilleker and Jackson offer in-depth analysis demonstrating how interactive Web 2.0 online tools, including weblogs, social networking sites and file-sharing sites, are utilised and evaluate the role of these tools in the marketing and branding of parties and candidates.

Examining the interactivity between candidate, party, and voter, this important book will be of strong interest to students and scholars of political science, elections, international relations and political communication. It will be of value to those within public relations, marketing and related communication and media programmes.

Our Sarah: Made in Alaska We may think we know Sarah Palin from all the coverage she has received in the political arena, but one-side depictions but media coverage is limited and, Sarah would even say, biased. OUR SARAH is also a bit biased since it's written by Sarah's dad and brother with contributions from many friends and colleagues--these are the people who know her--and love her--best.

Combining the appeal of Sarah Palin's bestselling book, Going Rogue, with the flavor of the hugely successful TV show "Sarah Palin's Alaska," here are intimate stories from Sarah's life along with a celebration of growing up in and sharing all that Alaska means to Sarah and her family. Sarah's dad and brother share great family stories of life in the last frontier--from hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and gold-mining, to marathon running, teaching and community service--first in small ways and then on a national stage. Structured around themes of family, faith, independence, resilience, character, risk-taking and adventure--here is a full and loving portrait of where Sarah Palin came from and what made her the person she is today.

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime

"This shit would be really interesting if we weren't in the middle of it."—Barack Obama, September 2008

In 2008, the presidential election became blockbuster entertainment. Everyone was watching as the race for the White House unfolded like something from the realm of fiction. The meteoric rise and historic triumph of Barack Obama. The shocking fall of the House of Clinton—and the improbable resurrection of Hillary as Obama's partner and America's face to the world. The mercurial performance of John McCain and the mesmerizing emergence of Sarah Palin. But despite the wall-to-wall media coverage of this spellbinding drama, remarkably little of the real story behind the headlines has yet been told.

In Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the country's leading political reporters, use their unrivaled access to pull back the curtain on the Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Palin campaigns. How did Obama convince himself that, despite the thinness of his rÉsumÉ, he could somehow beat the odds to become the nation's first African American president? How did the tumultuous relationship between the Clintons shape—and warp—Hillary's supposedly unstoppable bid? What was behind her husband's furious outbursts and devastating political miscalculations? Why did McCain make the novice governor of Alaska his running mate? And was Palin merely painfully out of her depth—or troubled in more serious ways?

Game Change answers those questions and more, laying bare the secret history of the 2008 campaign. Heilemann and Halperin take us inside the Obama machine, where staffers referred to the candidate as "Black Jesus." They unearth the quiet conspiracy in the U.S. Senate to prod Obama into the race, driven in part by the fears of senior Democrats that Bill Clinton's personal life might cripple Hillary's presidential prospects. They expose the twisted tale of John Edwards's affair with Rielle Hunter, the truth behind the downfall of Rudy Giuliani, and the doubts of those responsible for vetting Palin about her readiness for the Republican ticket—along with the McCain campaign staff's worries about her fitness for office.

Notes from the Cracked Ceiling: Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, and What It Will Take for a Woman to Win In the presidential election of 2008 America seemed ready to elevate a woman to the presidency or vice presidency and—with Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin—was on the verge of actually doing so. Words like inevitable and phenomenon were in the air and the political and cultural stars seemed to be aligned.

Why didn’t it happen? What will it take to make it happen soon?

In a probing analysis sure to ignite controversy, acclaimed White House correspondent Anne Kornblut argues that the optimists are blind to formidable obstacles that still stand in the way of any woman who aims for America’s highest political offices. And she makes clear exactly which strategies and common assumptions will need to change if a woman intends to break through the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” of all. Delving deep inside the Clinton and Palin campaigns, Kornblut reveals:

• the strategists’ mishandling of their candidates as women by failing to strike the right balance between femininity and toughness

• Clinton’s weathering of a series of stinging gender-based attacks, until accusations of “pimping out” her daughter, Chelsea, finally brought her to tears

• that Barack Obama was celebrated for his “historic”win in Iowa, even though it was not the first time an African American had won a caucus, but few noticed when Clinton became the first woman to  win a primary in New Hampshire

• that Palin was chosen solely by men, none of whom had experience in running women for office

Drawing from exclusive interviews with prominent women in both parties, Kornblut pinpoints where politically ambitious American women have gone wrong and what it will take to put them on track to the ultimate prize: the presidency. Former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice asserts: “We crossed the bar on African Americans some time ago. I’m not quite sure we’ve crossed it on women.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarks on the “suit of armor” women must don to survive the sexism and viciousness of politics. Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano confronts the false rumors that she is a lesbian and reveals what an invigorating “kick in the pants” it is to be in politics. And California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, the former head of eBay, compares politics to business: “It feels to me, thus far, as less of a meritocracy and more of a popularity contest. More of a little bit of an old boys’ club.”

Kornblut identifies the surprising realities of gender politics, such as the harsh treatment female candidates often receive from women voters, the gap between the United States and other countries when it comes to the electability of women, the “mommy penalty” that handicaps women candidates with young children, and the special appeal that women with law enforcement backgrounds have with voters.

Notes from the Cracked Ceiling reveals that the highly touted new era of gender-equal politics never got as far as was commonly perceived and is now in full retreat. It is essential reading for anyone who cares about politics and the limits for women that persist.

Palinisms: The Accidental Wit and Wisdom of Sarah Palin "I don't know if I should Buenos Aires or Bonjour, or... this is such a melting pot. This is so beautiful. I love this diversity. Yeah. There were a whole bunch of guys named Tony in the photo line, I know that"

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada. And I think now, isn't that ironic?"

Sometimes she makes perfect sense. Sometimes she channels something deeper than sense. And sometimes she turns a phrase that is destined for immortality. Sarah Palin is not just the most controversial and significant non-office holder in America, she is a font of accidental wit and wisdom. Her truthy public statements--tweeted or spoken, planned or spontaneous--are endlessly entertaining to fans and foes alike. Jacob Weisberg, whose career as a curator of George W. The Quotable Rogue: The Ideals of Sarah Palin in Her Own Words

When Sarah Palin says it, all of America hears it.

In the few years since Americans met Sarah Palin, her every word has been chronicled, analyzed, celebrated, and yes, infamously disparaged.  Regardless of your party affiliation, it's impossible to deny her influence on American politics and the dialogue her ideas have generated.  Author Matt Lewis has gathered some of Palin's most memorable remarks, reminding us that whether you consider her a rogue or a patriot, her words reveal a genuine love for America.

Endorsements:

If you learned everything you knew about American politics from Matt Lewis, you'd be in pretty good shape. I should know, since I practically do.

-          Tucker Carlson, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Caller

Matt Lewis is a conservative provocateur and has an easy way of making complicated issues understandable and leaving the DC jargon off the table. Matt's projects always make you think, reflect and act.

-          Governor Rick Perry, 47th Governor of Texas

Sarah Palin is one of the most important conservative leaders in America -- and Matt Lewis is one of my favorite writers.  Every conservative ought to have a copy of the Quotable Rogue in their personal library -- if for no other reason than to refute the distortions and lies constantly hurled at Palin by her detractors.

-          Ken Blackwell, former Ohio Secretary of State, senior fellow at the Family Research Council

For all the accolades heaped on Mr. Obama for his soaring rhetoric and brilliant, professorial oratory, it's hard to deny that Sarah Palin is one of the most quotable leaders of the 21st century. The Quotable Rogue brings that into stunning clarity. And it's not because she's controversial -- it's because she's usually just right.

-          S.E. Cupp, political columnist and culture critic, author of Losing Our Religion: The Liberal Media's Attack on Christianity

As you'll see in Matt's book, the reason for Sarah Palin's popularity is that she speaks in a blunt fashion and exposes truths that the politically correct job-protecting elites are fearful of.  She is a far wiser woman than Katie Couric.

-          Andrew Breitbart, Breitbart.com, author of Righteous Indignation

Sarah Palin drives the left crazy and makes many of the Republicans who collaborated with Democrats to destroy our fiscal wellbeing duck and cover.  Matt Lewis captures, through Sarah Palin's own words, her wit, wisdom, and basic sense that America remains the last best hope for mankind.

-          Erick Erickson, Editor-in-Chief of RedState.com

Steadfast in her beliefs and fearless in her demeanor, Sarah Palin has become a leading voice in today's conservative movement and has inspired a new generation of activists. This book of quotes captures the independent spirit of Palin and is a great resource for all of us who are 'going rogue' alongside her.

-          Teri Christoph, co-founder, Smart Girl Politics

A book like this one is absolutely essential in a world where the media refuses to quote Gov. Palin without liberal doses of snark, vitriol, and hyperbole. It's refreshing to see straight quotes in print so that readers can make up their own minds.

08: A Graphic Diary of the Campaign Trail A Graphic Retelling Of The Most Historic Election Of Our Time

Beyond the pandering focus groups, the billion-dollar fund-raising machinery, and the relentless myopia of the 24-hour news cycle, it was clear that something deep in the American psyche was stirring as the rumblings of the 2008 election first began. 08’ follows the epic 2008 presidential campaign and its dramatic cast of characters: the inevitable former first lady with a terrible plan to win, the freshman African-American Senator who skyrockets onto the national stage, and a former POW’s hangdog campaign that overcomes both a Mormon Governor and a thrice-married (occasionally cross-dressing) Mayor.

Taking its cur from campaign classics like Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 and The Making of the President Series, 08 brings politico journalism into the graphic novel form. Reflect on all the single-issue candidates, the pundits, the meltdowns, the awkward missteps, and the ruthless maneuvers of the scorched-earth campaign trail as they knit themselves into a political tale of the present-day battle for the future of America.

Cosmopolitanism: Ideals and Realities This book sets out the case for a cosmopolitan approach to contemporary global politics. It presents a systematic theory of cosmopolitanism, explicating its core principles and justifications, and examines the role many of these principles have played in the development of global politics, such as framing the human rights regime. The framework is then used to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: the crisis of financial markets, climate change and the fallout from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In each case, Held argues that realistic politics is exhausted, and that cosmopolitanism is the new realism.

Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photographs

Through 150 striking color photographs, Obama: The Historic Campaign in Photographs charts the road to Barack Obama's nomination as the first African American to lead the presidential ticket of a major party. Announcing his campaign in Springfield, Illinois, on February 10, 2007, Obama stood on the grounds of the Old State Capitol, where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "House Divided" speech against slavery in 1858. During an eighteen-month campaign, from the snows of Iowa to the hunt for Democratic "superdelegates," this junior senator from Chicago confounded the party establishment and rewrote the playbook on modern presidential campaigning. This amazing collection of photographs captures the public and private moments of his journey, and offers a unique window into one of the great triumphs in American politics.

Barack, Inc.: Winning Business Lessons of the Obama Campaign

This is the eBook version of the printed book.

Barack Obama's campaign didn't just make history: it teaches lessons that every business can profit from. The Obama campaign was brilliantly planned, strategized, and executed, and built to drive home a powerful, consistent core value proposition: the proposition of change. Moreover, it had an extraordinary understanding of innovation, manifested by its extraordinary use of technology to achieve specific, quantifiable goals. In Barack, Inc., Barry Libert and Rick Faulk present the Obama campaign as a business, identifying lessons any business leader can use to maximize performance. Libert and Faulk cover issues ranging from marketing to leadership, strategy to execution. They reveal how Obama's team identified and honed a powerful core message, and applied it flexibly in response to changing circumstances without ever compromising core brand values. You'll discover how Obama built a focused, "no-drama" organization that empowered local decision-makers without sacrificing nationwide consistency or discipline. Finally, the authors, executives at the world's leading provider of business social networking services, show how Obama leveraged social networking at a scale unprecedented in the history of either politics or business. From start to finish, Barack, Inc. is actionable: packed with ready-to-use strategies and tactics that can help you succeed with any goal, in any marketplace.

Campaigning in the Twenty-First Century: A Whole New Ballgame?

So much has changed during the past decade in political campaigning that we can almost say "it's a whole new ball game." This book analyzes the way campaigns were traditionally run and the extraordinary changes that have occurred in the last decade. Dennis W. Johnson looks at the most sophisticated techniques of modern campaigning—micro-targeting, online fundraising, digital communication, the new media—and examines what has changed, how those changes have dramatically transformed campaigning, and what has remained fundamentally the same despite new technologies and communications.

Campaigns are becoming more open and free-wheeling, with greater involvement of activists and average voters alike. But they can also become more chaotic and difficult to control. Campaigning in the Twenty-First Century presents daunting challenges for candidates and professional consultants as they try to get their messages out to voters. Ironically, the more open and robust campaigns become, the greater is the need for seasoned, flexible and imaginative professional consultants.

Media Bias in Presidential Election Coverage 1948-2008: Evaluation via Formal Measurement .cs95E872D0{text-align:left;text-indent:0pt;margin:0pt 0pt 0pt 0pt}.cs5EFED22F{color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:12pt; font-weight:normal; font-style:normal; }.csA62DFD6A{color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-family:Times New Roman; font-size:12pt; font-weight:normal; font-style:italic; }

Accusations of partisan bias in Presidential election coverage are suspect at best and self-serving at worst. They are generally supported by the methodology of instance confirmation, tainted by the hostile media effect, and based on simplistic visions of how the news media are organized. Media Bias in Presidential Election Coverage 1948-2008 by Dave D’Alessio, is a revealing analysis that shows the news media have four essential natures: as journalistic entities, businesses, political actors, and property, all of which can act to create news coverage biases, in some cases in opposing directions. By meta-analyzing the results of 99 previous examinations of media coverage of Presidential elections from 1948 to 2008, D’Alessio reveals that coverage has no aggregate partisan bias either way, even though there are small biases in specific realms that are generally insubstantial. Furthermore, while publishers used to control coverage preferences, this practice has become negligible in recent years. Media Bias proves that, at least in terms of Presidential election coverage, The New York Times is not the most liberal paper in America and the Fox News channel is substantially more conservative in news coverage than the broadcast networks. Finally, Media Bias in Presidential Election Coverage 1948-2008 predicts that no amount of evidence will cause political candidates to cease complaining about bias because such accusations have both strategic potential in campaigns and an undeniable utility in ego defense.

Trailblazer: An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin She's a real-life American success story. A small-town girl who wasn't content to keep things small. In 1996, Sarah Palin was a city councilwoman who had set her sights on becoming mayor, despite unwelcome advice that as the mother of three young children, she might not have a whole lot of success in a political career. She proved any naysayer wrong in a hurry. Ten years later, by 2006, she was the youngest governor Alaska had ever had...and the first woman. Now, still only in her mid-forties and the mother of five, she is one of the best-known women in American politics.

People magazine assistant editor Lorenzo Benet met with Sarah Palin and her family just weeks before the announcement that she would be the Republican vice-presidential nominee. He spoke in depth with Governor Palin; with her husband, Todd, the "First Dude," as he likes to call himself; with her children; and with other members of her extended family. Now, in a fascinating book, Benet uses skills honed as a longtime professional writer and the author of several biographies to present the intimate portrait of Sarah Palin that America has been looking for.

Beginning with Palin's birth in Sandpoint, Idaho, and her family's move to Skagway and then Wasilla, Alaska, Trailblazer details the difficulties of growing up in Alaska, Sarah Palin's early successes as a basketball star and a beauty pageant contestant, and the story of her elopement with Todd Palin, whom she met at Wasilla High. It describes her career as a broadcast journalist and young mother, and gives details on her move to the political arena that has culminated in making her a household name. From staff firings in Wasilla to her controversies with the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission, from her support of Todd Palin's snow machine races to her own love for moose and caribou hunting and salmon fishing, and culminating with the almost manic excitement of the 2008 election, Lorenzo Benet has built up a detailed picture of a fascinating and extraordinarily complex woman -- an introduction to a Sarah Palin that the world is only just coming to know.

From Billy Graham to Sarah Palin: Evangelicals and the Betrayal of American Conservatism From Billy Graham to Sarah Palin provides an iconoclastic new history of the entrance of evangelical Christians into national American politics. Examining the key players of the “Religious Right” — Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell, Chuck Colson, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, and many others — D. G. Hart argues that evangelicalism is (and always has been) a bad fit with classic political conservatism.

Hart shows how the uneasy alliance of these unlikely political bedfellows has contributed directly to the fragmentation of today’s conservative movement. He contends that the ongoing burden of reconciling the progressive moral idealism of religious conservatives with the sober realism of political conservatives increasingly threatens this precarious partnership. Moreover, Hart suggests that evangelicals are unlikely to remain politically conservative in the long term unless they stop looking to big government to solve societal woes at home and abroad and at last embrace classic small-government conservatism for its own sake.

Going Rogue: An American Life

On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world.

As chief executive of America′s largest state, she had built a record as a reformer who cast aside politics-as-usual and pushed through changes other politicians only talked about: Energy independence. Ethics reform. And the biggest private sector infrastructure project in U.S. history. While revitalizing public school funding and ensuring the state met its responsibilities to seniors and Alaska Native populations, Palin also beat the political "good ol′ boys club" at their own game and brought Big Oil to heel.

Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin wasn′t a packaged and over-produced "candidate." She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom was serving his country in a yearlong deployment in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs. Palin′s hometown story touched a populist nerve, rallying hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to the GOP ticket.

But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her "refreshing," "honest," a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin.

In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom′s-eye view of high-stakes national politics - from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost.

Going Rogue traces one ordinary citizen′s extraordinary journey, and imparts Palin′s vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth.

The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin

rogue (r¯og), n: An elephant that has separated from a herd and roams about alone,in which state it is very savage.—Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary

After three years of research, bestselling journalist Joe McGinniss presents his already controversial and much anticipated investigative chronicle of Sarah Palin as an individual, politician, and cultural phenomenon.

In his critically acclaimed book about Alaska, Going to Extremes, the fledgling state itself was Joe McGinniss’s subject. Although he didn’t hesitate to reveal the many flaws and contradictions behind its “last frontier” image, McGinniss fell in love with the land and its people. More than three decades later, he returned to Alaska in search of its most famous resident, Sarah Palin.

On Election Day 2008, McGinniss began his on-the-ground reporting that culminated, famously, in his moving next door to Sarah Palin in spring 2010. THE ROGUE is the eagerly awaited result of his research and writing: a startling study of the illusion and reality of Sarah Palin—and a probing look at the Alaska and the America that produced her. Sometimes funny, sometimes frightening, always provocative and illuminating, THE ROGUE answers the questions “Who is she, really?,” “How did she happen?,” and “Will she ever go away?”

In all of his books, McGinniss has scrutinized the mysterious space between image and reality—how that space is created, negotiated, and/or manipulated. Now, with The Rogue, McGinniss combines his deep appreciation of the place Sarah Palin comes from with his uncanny ability to penetrate the façades of people in public life. The result is an extraordinary double narrative that alternately traces Palin’s curious rise to political prominence and worldwide celebrity status and recounts the author’s day-to-day experiences as he uncovers the messy reality beneath the glossy Palin myth.

Readers will find THE ROGUE at once bitingly insightful, hilarious, and profoundly ominous in what it reveals—not just about the dark underpinnings of a potential presidential nominee but also in regard to the huge numbers of Americans who passionately support her.

The Lies of Sarah Palin: The Untold Story Behind Her Relentless Quest for Power

In The Lies of Sarah Palin, Geoffrey Dunn provides the first full-scale and in-depth political biography of the controversial Republican vice-presidential candidate and former governor of Alaska.

Based on more than two-hundred interviews---many of them with Republican colleagues and one-time political allies of Palin’s---and more than forty-thousand pages of uncovered documents, Dunn chronicles Palin’s troubling penchant for duplicity in grim detail, from her dysfunctional childhood in Wasilla through her contentious run for mayor and her failed governorship of Alaska. He also provides the shocking inside story of her betrayal of running mate John McCain during the 2008 presidential campaign and her self-serving resignation as governor in July of the following year. Dunn deftly places Palin in the American tradition of right-wing demagogues---from Huey Long to Joe McCarthy---and details her troubling obsession with Barack Obama as it fuels her own political ambitions and a potential run for the presidency in 2012.

The Lies of Sarah Palin is a journalistic tour de force that vividly reveals the Queen of the Tea Party movement as a vengeful and manipulative empress without clothes. This is the definitive book on Sarah Palin.

The Faith and Values of Sarah Palin She stepped onto the world stage as the Republican vice-presidential nominee in the election of 2008. Previously, she had only been a small-town mayor and the governor of a state with slightly more than half a million people. Still, there was something about her. She was pretty, fierce in her conservatism and she seemed undaunted by the slings and arrows of national politics. And there was something else, as well: there was a moral force that seemed to shape her life. As the world grew to know Sarah Palin throughout the 2008 campaign and in her subsequent public appearances and book, people began to see the force behind her: a deep, lifelong Christian faith. This faith was the lens through which she viewed the world, the bedrock of her politics, and even a primary influence upon her personality.

To understand Sarah Palin, it is essential to understand her faith. What faith principles, then, impact Sarah Palin's politics, and what are their implications for the Republican Party and the nation as a whole? These questions and more are answered in the fascinating new book by New York Times bestselling author Stephen Mansfield and his co-author David Holland. These authors were given extensive access to Palin's pastors, advisors, friends and family and it has allowed them to capture the moving story of Palin's faith, as well as the meaning of that faith for American politics and culture.

Studies of Identity in the 2008 Presidential Campaign (Lexington Studies in Political Communication) To simply say the 2008 presidential election was historic seems like an understatement. The election was unique in many ways beyond the selection of the nation's first African-American as President. The drama of the election was also heightened by the historic nomination battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The contest generated issues of race and gender throughout the campaign, as did the candidacy of Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee. And John McCain brought his own unique qualities to the campaign: Vietnam War hero, long-term Congressional service record, feisty temperament, and the oldest first-time presidential candidate to run for the Presidency. Thus, issues of race, gender and age dominated the campaign both implicitly and explicitly. The candidacies of Clinton, Obama, McCain and Palin provided the context and dynamics for charges of racism, sexism and ageism. Studies of Identity in the 2008 Presidential Campaign explores issues of identity politics and the presidential election. Investigating all aspects of race, gender or ageism, the contributors to this volume address the role and function of 'identity politics' in political campaigns, and highlight challenges of 'identity politics' in contemporary political campaigns.

A Mormon in the White House?: 10 Things Every American Should Know about Mitt Romney
According to author and radio personality Hewitt, Mitt Romney-billionaire venture capitalist, consummate family man, gifted and media-savvy politician-would be unstoppable in the coming presidential race were it not for one niggling line on his resumé: he's a Mormon. In this unashamedly partisan volume, Hewitt attempts to refute the claim that no Mormon could get elected President (along with any other claim that might be made against Romney) while analyzing the former Massachusetts governor's biography and burnishing his conservative and leadership credentials. Hewitt is an agreeable, if inelegant, writer, wise enough to take detours (such as an edifying primer on Mormon history and thought) that stave off tedium. He spends far more time extolling Romney than excoriating his Republican and Democratic opponents. This is an efficient and effective exercise in political hagiography.

Neo-Feminist Cinema: Girly Films, Chick Flicks, and Consumer Culture

What lies behind current feminist discontent with contemporary cinema?

Through a combination of cultural and industry analysis, Hilary Radner’s Neo-Feminist Cinema: Girly Films, Chick Flicks and Consumer Culture shows how the needs of conglomerate Hollywood have encouraged an emphasis on consumer culture within films made for women. By exploring a number of representative "girly films," including Pretty Woman, Legally Blonde, Maid in Manhattan, The Devil Wears Prada, and Sex and the City: The Movie, Radner proposes that rather than being "post-feminist," as is usually assumed, such films are better described as "neo-feminist." Examining their narrative format, as it revolves around the story of an ambitious unmarried woman who defines herself through consumer culture as much as through work or romance, Radner argues that these films exemplify neo-liberalist values rather than those of feminism.

As such, Neo-Feminist Cinema offers a new explanation as to why feminist-oriented scholars and audiences who are seeking more than "labels and love" from their film experience have viewed recent "girly films" as a betrayal of second-wave feminism, and why, on the other hand, such films have proven to be so successful at the box office.

Dissecting American Health Care: Commentaries on Health, Policy, and Politics The intersection of health care, politics, and policy is a controversial one, and this book of lively essays takes on all of today's hot health topics: alternative medicine, health care reform, screening mammograms, taxes to decrease soda consumption, gun control, and many more.

Former Assistant Surgeon General Douglas Kamerow, a family doctor, journal editor, NPR commentator, and Chief Scientist at RTI International, combines evidence, opinion, and humor in 47 short essays taken from his health policy columns in the international medical journal BMJ and his nationally broadcast radio commentaries.

Some of Dr. Kamerow's many pronouncements:
"Guns don't kill crowds, but mentally disturbed people with high capacity semiautomatic pistols do.""Just as 'on the web no one knows you are a dog,' it is also true that on the web many will not know you are a charlatan or a well-meaning naïf.""The Pope's job is to be the spiritual leader of the world's Catholics. It would be a true blessing if he could do that without advocating policies that endanger the health of some of the world's neediest people.""Screening people at one-day themed events, let alone on the web, strikes me as both a waste of everyone's time and a misleading promise of diagnosis and treatment that probably won't be delivered."Other early reviews:

"One of the giants of medicine and public health...takes on the most critical issues we face, with clarity, brevity, and yet depth. I enjoyed reading this book, and so will you."
--Dr. David Satcher, former Surgeon General

"Dr. Kamerow's essays are witty, informed, curious, exasperated, provocative, constructive and just plain human. Kamerow writes in a way that invites general readers to realize that they have a stake here too - that these are their stories as well."
--Dr. Ranit Mishori, past Health Editor, Parade Magazine

"Dr. Kamerow shares with Atul Gawande and Malcolm Gladwell keen insight, lucid writing, and accessible brilliance. You don't need to be an insider to clearly understand what he's talking about."
--Dr. Jay Siwek, editor, American Family Physician

"Doug Kamerow's exceptional experience and wisdom in primary care, public health, and health policy are collected in a highly engaging series of brief, thoughtful, and informative essays on the major health issues that confront us--as individual and as a nation--every day. He writes with insight, wit, and clarity..."
--Dr. J. Michael McGinnis, Senior Scholar, Institute of Medicine

"Family doctor Doug Kamerow provides us with sharp, witty and personal observations about preventive medicine and public health in the U.S. His commentaries on how current events, trends and politics are intertwined with both offers us - the public - a rare glimpse of the complexity of implementing the popular notion that we can easily fix health care by preventing disease in the first place."

Eighteen Insights That Help Define Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential Campaign: Recollections of an Historical Campaign and Related Events This thoroughly researched and well documented narrative carefully examines eighteen topics that help define the character and political goals of Barack Obama as he competes in the 2008 Presidential contest. Amazingly, many of the findings presented have not been evaluated in the main stream media. Subjects analyzed include Obama's relationship with Raila Odinga and the ethnic cleansing that followed Odinga's Presidential loss in Kenya, Obama's many links to the Nation of Islam and Louis Farrakhan, Obama's socialist and radical background and his corresponding agenda for America, Obama's support for a stronger United Nations and a weaker United States through Senate resolutions introduced by him, Obama's subtle support for Hamas and his multiple efforts to advance Iranian interests in the Middle East, Obama's numerous radical Arab contacts and advisors which will put Israel in more harm's way, Obama's critical views on America and its faith, Obama's political and logistic objectives to weaken America and render her less able to fight the war on terrorism, Obama's assault on free speech, and the violent individuals that surround him who help advance his radical political goals. Much of the presentation is based on direct quotes, speeches, and excerpts from written documents that help critically and independently define Obama's view of the world and possible future plans. "Eighteen Insights ..." may become the standard reference that reflects an independent and objective evaluation of the many facets of Obama's political philosophies and goals, which may radically alter America's role in world politics, along with the socioeconomic framework of our country. This presentation is mandatory reading for anyone seeking a thorough understanding of Barack Obama.
