Pioneers: The Frontier Family of Barack Obama Pioneers is a look at one immigrant family, the Kearneys, whose journey through a new land culminated in a stint in the Whitehouse. This is the incredible story of how the nation's first African-American President is also a direct descendent of post-famine Irish immigrants. Barack Obama has referred to his mother, Ann Dunham, as ""the dominant figure in my formative years... The values she taught me continue to be my touchstone when it comes to how I go about the world of politics."" This unique book tells the quintessential American story of her Irish ancestry: of her great-great-grandfather who emigrated from the small village of Moneygall, Ireland to the Scioto Valley in Ohio, and of his relatives who made the journey before him. This is the very real story of the 43rd President's ancestors, and their American Dream. ""Almost 160 years after Joseph Kearney arrived as an immigrant in 1849 to join his uncle Thomas, his great great great great grandson became president. What an amazing journey for one fmaily in just 160 years, the story of America.""-Irish Voice ""Delves deep into history and has many differing routes. . . . An educational and thoughtful read."" The Midwest Book Review ""MacDonogh writes a hypnotic account which pulls readers directly into the tales of wigmakers and pioneers, creating a historical arc of personal and national struggle and the triumph that leads to President Barack Obama.""--Irish America Magazine.

Barack Obama: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies)

Barack Obama splashed onto the political scene with an inspirational, rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. From that night on, Obamamania was very real. He is bold and audacious; his rhetoric fiery, convincing and very compelling. He encourages cross-over appeal, discourse, affiliation, and has drawn many Americans, including today's youth, into politics. This is the story of a man of mixed race heritage who inspires, listens, compromises, and is often bipartisan. With a charismatic smile and a cadre of change we can believe in, many believe that he embodies the American dream. Thousands have turned out to hear the dynamic senator from Illinois speak as he campaigns to become the next President of the United States.

Barack Obama says that his story could only take place in America, and this revealing biography traces the events of his remarkable life thus far. From his upbringing in humble circumstances in Hawaii and Indonesia to becoming the fifth African American senator in U.S. history, and later, a presidential candidate, this well-researched volume highlights the hardships and successes, the people who most influenced his career, his personal life, and his meteoric rise to pop icon status. Rounded out with photos, a timeline, a bibliography, and an index, this volume is a must-read for high school and undergraduate students of current events and political science.

The Presidential Campaign of Barack Obama: A Critical Analysis of a Racially Transcendent Strategy

In the early twenty-first century, race still occupies a dominant role in American politics. Despite this truism, presidential candidate Barack Obama was uniquely poised to transcend both race and party as the first African American to have a realistic chance of winning the presidency. Previous contenders running in the traditional mode of the Civil Rights Movement based their appeal primarily on African American voters. Obama, on the other hand, ran a deracialized campaign in an effort to appeal to voters of different backgrounds and political parties.

Clayton examines how race in American politics has changed over time and offers an explanation for why Obama’s candidacy offers a different roadmap for the future. The Presidential Campaign of Barack Obama provides students of politics, inside and outside of the classroom, a unique opportunity to explore the institutional and structural challenges an African American faces in becoming the president of the United States. This guide to major issues in Black politics and the ins and outs of the 2008 campaign provides the necessary contours for understanding how the highest elected African American official won office.

Barack Obama Campaign Speeches Barack Obama had a gift, and he knew it. He had a way of making very smart, very accomplished people feel virtuous just by wanting to help Barack Obama. It had happened at Harvard Law School in the mid-1980s, at a time when the school was embroiled in fights over political correctness. He had won one of the truly plum prizes of overachievement at Harvard: he had been voted president of the law review, the first African-American ever so honored. Though his politics were conventionally (if not stridently) liberal, even the conservatives voted for him. This book contains 126 inspirational speeches by candidate Obama during his presidential campaign that inspired millions of people across the country and the world

A HISPANIC VIEW: THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN & CANDIDATE BARACK OBAMA ( A HISPANIC VIEW) Contemporaneous views of the 2008 Presidential campaign with commentary of the pre-convention primary candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties. After each published column, comments are made in retrospect.

Once Barack Obama became the obvious Democratic candidate, his policies, campaign statements and promises were looked at closely. So were polls and debates.

The column written the day after the election comes across as surprisingly prescient when looked at two years later.

Candidate Obama proved to be very good. Candidate McCain came over less than expected but contrary to normal Presidential politics he refused to hang radical and commonly detested Black Nationalist Reverend Jeremiah Wright around Obama's neck, despite Obama's claim to have attended Wright's church for 20 years.

Combining McCain's kid glove treatment of Obama with the financial collapse that started on September 15 with the collapse of Lehman Brothers, McCain never had a chance after the middle of September despite his brilliant choice of Sara Palin as his running mate.

Obama won. It appears two years later that the country may have lost for he has failed as President through September of 2010 and his "accomplishments" are being rejected by the people.

His approval rating at the end of September hovers around 40-43 percent, ten points less than the percentage of people who voted for him.

Independents who voted for him and made him President have dropped him.

In Volume 3, we will examine his first year in office.

Blagojevich: Illinois Governor Corruption Scandal, Alleged Attempt to Sell Senate Seat Vacated by President-Elect Barack Obama, FBI Charges, Blagojevich History and Documents (CD-ROM) This CD-ROM provides an up-to-date collection of documents and material about Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. In early December 2008, an FBI affidavit alleged that Blagojevich conspired to sell or trade Illinois U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama for financial and other personal benefits for himself and his wife. Extensive historical material about the life and career of Blagojevich includes legislative records, policy statements, releases, and much more. A complete reproduction of the FBI affidavit is also included. This extraordinary collection of detailed material has 53,418 pages reproduced with Adobe Acrobat PDF software. Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, issued this release on December 9, 2008: Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich and his Chief of Staff, John Harris, were arrested today by FBI agents on federal corruption charges alleging that they and others are engaging in ongoing criminal activity: conspiring to obtain personal financial benefits for Blagojevich by leveraging his sole authority to appoint a United States Senator; threatening to withhold substantial state assistance to the Tribune Company in connection with the sale of Wrigley Field to induce the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members sharply critical of Blagojevich; and to obtain campaign contributions in exchange for official actions both historically and now in a push before a new state ethics law takes effect January 1, 2009. Blagojevich, 51, and Harris, 46, both of Chicago, were each charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. They were charged in a two-count criminal complaint that was sworn out on Sunday and unsealed today following their arrests, which occurred without incident. A 76-page FBI affidavit alleges that Blagojevich was intercepted on court-authorized wiretaps during the last month conspiring to sell or trade Illinois U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama for financial and other personal benefits for himself and his wife. At various times, in exchange for the Senate appointment, Blagojevich discussed obtaining: a substantial salary for himself at a either a non-profit foundation or an organization affiliated with labor unions; placing his wife on paid corporate boards where he speculated she might garner as much as $150,000 a year; promises of campaign funds including cash up front; and a cabinet post or ambassadorship for himself. Just last week, on December 4, Blagojevich allegedly told an advisor that he might get some (money) up front, maybe from Senate Candidate 5, if he named Senate Candidate 5 to the Senate seat, to insure that Senate Candidate 5 kept a promise about raising money for Blagojevich if he ran for re-election. In a recorded conversation on October 31, Blagojevich claimed he was approached by an associate of Senate Candidate 5 as follows: We were approached pay to play. That, you know, he d raise 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator. On November 7, while talking on the phone about the Senate seat with Harris and an advisor, Blagojevich said he needed to consider his family and that he is financially hurting, the affidavit states.

In My Lifetime: Towards the Presidency of Barack Obama With the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States, the recurring confession heard across Black America was, I never thought it would happen in my lifetime. Especially among the older generations of Southerners was this incredulity felt deepest. Reverend Daughtry, a son of the South, writes, In state houses, city halls, municipal buildings, governmental buildings, and places of importance, entrance was denied to blacks, except to work at menial tasks. As our mothers and fathers entered, usually with mops, brooms, and buckets, they were forced to do so through the back door. Now, to have a black man going, not in the back door, but in the front door . . . Not to mop and clean, but to run the place, not as boy, uncle, sambo, or nigger but as President. It is unreal. This book was written during the heat of the campaign, capturing the historical significance and excitement of the moment. The candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton, the contentious primary season, the role of former President Bill Clinton, the Democratic Convention, and the tensions and divided loyalties among families, friends, and allies are rehearsed and re-lived in vivid detail, reminding us of the journey to Election Day 2008.

The Reproach is Lifted: Barack Obama Presidency Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States of America. Alongside the many thousands of spectators and with tears flowing down my cheeks, I asked God, "What does this all mean?" The Bible instructs us that "with all thy getting, get an understanding". I needed to know. I have always felt that when something historical takes place --as in this election-- then something must also occur in the spiritual. My brother Hugh, while the Holy Spirit was speaking through him began to share with me that "the reproach has been lifted from the African American people". I knew at that moment that my way of contributing to the healing that President-elect Obama mentioned in his victory speech in Chicago was to write the inspiring book "The Reproach is Lifted". Obama stated, "This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other." I told my mother when I phoned her from the plane that on this day "I've been born again".

Whiny Little Bitch: The Excuse-Filled Presidency of Barack Obama Enjoying Your Hope and Change?

Whiny Little Bitch is your guide to the most embarrassing presidency since the Carter Administration.

It's an exciting way to pass some time while you're waiting for the sea levels to drop.

Don't faint, or you'll miss:

Obama's Foreign Policy - Under the exciting new Obama regime, treating your allies with respect is part of the failed policies of the past.

Obama's Party - Congressional Democrats view tax cuts with the same enthusiasm as a vampire viewing a crucifix. Come to think of it, Congressional Democrats view a crucifix with the same enthusiasm as a vampire viewing a crucifix.

Obama's Financial Meltdown - Obama blaming Wall Street for the financial meltdown is like showing up for the last five minutes of Star Wars and deciding that Skywalker kid should go to jail for murdering all those nice folks on the Death Star.

Obama's Homeland Security - Janet Napolitano is proof that there is at least one person in Washington who is less qualified for her job than Barack Obama is for his.

Obama's Favorite Phrase - 'Let me be clear' is the rhetorical equivalent of an exploding dye pack in a bag of cash. It indelibly marks all words that follow as false.

From the author: Transitions to the presidency bear wide-ranging consequences for the successes--and failures--of the administrations that follow. Barack Obama' s effort in 2008 and early 2009 is no exception. In many ways, it was a successful transition to office. Despite severe economic constraints, the transition paved the way for an ambitious post-inaugural agenda and the first steps toward fleshing out Obama's campaign themes of "hope" and "change." But all was not perfect. It was a transition that also offers cautionary lessons about how early mistakes, errors, and omissions potentially can hinder that success.

Amazon.com Books: Barack Obama memoirs
Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance Nine years before the Senate campaign that made him one of the most influential and compelling voices in American politics, Barack Obama published this lyrical, unsentimental, and powerfully affecting memoir, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller when it was reissued in 2004. Dreams from My Father tells the story of Obama’s struggle to understand the forces that shaped him as the son of a black African father and white American mother—a struggle that takes him from the American heartland to the ancestral home of his great-aunt in the tiny African village of Alego.

Obama opens his story in New York, where he hears that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has died in a car accident. The news triggers a chain of memories as Barack retraces his family’s unusual history: the migration of his mother’s family from small-town Kansas to the Hawaiian islands; the love that develops between his mother and a promising young Kenyan student, a love nurtured by youthful innocence and the integrationist spirit of the early sixties; his father’s departure from Hawaii when Barack was two, as the realities of race and power reassert themselves; and Barack’s own awakening to the fears and doubts that exist not just between the larger black and white worlds but within himself.

Propelled by a desire to understand both the forces that shaped him and his father’s legacy, Barack moves to Chicago to work as a community organizer. There, against the backdrop of tumultuous political and racial conflict, he works to turn back the mounting despair of the inner city. His story becomes one with those of the people he works with as he learns about the value of community, the necessity of healing old wounds, and the possibility of faith in the midst of adversity.

Barack’s journey comes full circle in Kenya, where he finally meets the African side of his family and confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life. Traveling through a country racked by brutal poverty and tribal conflict, but whose people are sustained by a spirit of endurance and hope, Barack discovers that he is inescapably bound to brothers and sisters living an ocean away—and that by embracing their common struggles he can finally reconcile his divided inheritance.

A searching meditation on the meaning of identity in America, Dreams from My Father might be the most revealing portrait we have of a major American leader—a man who is playing, and will play, an increasingly prominent role in healing a fractious and fragmented nation.

The Rise of Barack Obama Illinois Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign has galvanized Democrats and independents in ways not seen or heard since John F. Kennedy was president. In fact, the belief in Obama's political positions, his charisma, and Barack's affinity for connecting with his audience has brought an endorsement from Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy, Ethel Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy.

Pete Souza has extensively documented Senator Barack Obama's rise to political stardom with exclusive photographs beginning with Obama's first day in the U.S. Senate. He has accompanied the Senator to seven countries including Kenya, South Africa, and Russia. Souza had unprecedented access to photograph private and political moments as senator and presidential candidate Obama went about his duties. His photographs of Obama have won national photojournalism awards for the past three years.

Souza is a freelance photographer and assistant professor of photojournalism at Ohio University. He has worked as an official White House photographer for President Ronald Reagan and was also the official photographer for the President's June 2004 funeral. He is the author of two celebrated photographic books of President Reagan's term in office, Unguarded Moments: Behind-the-Scenes Photographs of President Reagan (1992) and Images of Greatness: An Intimate Look at the Presidency of Ronald Reagan by Triumph Books (2004.)

Souza's photographs have also appeared as photo spreads or covers in renowned magazines as National Geographic, Life, Fortune, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report. His photographs have also been part of group exhibits at the National Archives, Smithsonian Museum of American History, and Corcoran Gallery of Art.

The Essential Barack Obama: The Grammy Award-Winning Recordings A CD collection featuring the best-selling audiobooks, The Audacity of Hope and Dreams from My Father from Grammy® award-winning author, Barack Obama.

The Audacity of Hope

In July 2004, Barack Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with an address that spoke to Americans across the political spectrum. One phrase in particular anchored itself in listeners’ minds, a reminder that for all the discord and struggle to be found in our history as a nation, we have always been guided by a dogged optimism in the future, or what Senator Obama called “the audacity of hope.”

Now, in The Audacity of Hope, Senator Obama calls for a different brand of politics–a politics for those weary of bitter partisanship and alienated by the “endless clash of armies” we see in congress and on the campaign trail; a politics rooted in the faith, inclusiveness, and nobility of spirit at the heart of “our improbable experiment in democracy.” He explores those forces–from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media–that can stifle even the best-intentioned politician. He also writes, with surprising intimacy and self-deprecating humor, about settling in as a senator, seeking to balance the demands of public service and family life, and his own deepening religious commitment.

At the heart of this book is Senator Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic, and the transnational threats–from terrorism to pandemic–that gather beyond our shores. And he grapples with the role that faith plays in a democracy–where it is vital and where it must never intrude. Underlying his stories about family, friends, members of the Senate, even the president, is a vigorous search for connection: the foundation for a radically hopeful political consensus.

A senator and a lawyer, a professor and a father, a Christian and a skeptic, and above all a student of history and human nature, Senator Obama has written a book of transforming power. Only by returning to the principles that gave birth to our Constitution, he says, can Americans repair a political process that is broken, and restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans. Those Americans are out there, he writes–“waiting for Republicans and Democrats to catch up with them.”

Dreams from My Father
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Barack Obama: The Movement for Change (Blackamber Inspirations) Examining in detail the origins of President Barack Obama's mission to change America, this biographical account is focused on his days as a community organizer on the south side of Chicago and his rise through the racially charged Chicago political scene. Obama's plan for change is put forth as the latest expression of a movement for justice: a movement that has swept forward with the collective energy of great leaders who have bent the ""arc of morality"" towards justice. This examination of Obama's early years in Chicago explores how his life touched and was touched by a beleaguered and sinking community in one of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods and how his work with the residents of Chicago's Woodlawn and Altgeld Gardens communities has shaped how he thinks, how he works, and his vision for the American people. Stepping back from recent events, it becomes apparent that Obama's unlikely victory is not merely the story of a single, remarkable individual, it is a story of a movement and of the people who drove that movement forward and one that will cascade down the generations.

Barack Obama (What's So Great About...?) Barack Obama likes to say: In no other country on earth is my story possible. Born to a white mother and an African father, Obama struggled to understand his place in the world. He found it in the gritty streets of South Side Chicago. There, his talent as a community organizer made him a voice for the voiceless. As his voice grew stronger, he rose from the Illinois State Senate to the U.S. Senate. In 2009, he became the first African American President of the United States. In the first year of his presidency, he was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bring people together. Obama s story is that of the American Dream, where hard work and big dreams find one answer: Yes We Can.

The Dream Begins: How Hawaii Shaped Barack Obama Born and raised in the most multicultural state in the union, United States presidential candidate Barack Obama bears the indelible stamp of his native Hawaii. Here is a coming-of-age story set in Hawaii's storied "melting pot"—a revealing look at what makes Obama tick.

This revised edition contains an 8-page photo section not published in the previous edition, and an updated epilogue.

Authored by veteran political writers Stu Glauberman and Jerry Burris, this 152-page book examines Obama's early years in Hawaii. The self-described "skinny kid with the funny name" flourished in the Islands, where local values foster tolerance, compromise and mutual respect—and where diversity defines people rather than divides them. The social mores of the Aloha State and the experience of growing up in an island culture have had a deep and lasting influence on the candidate. Obama himself has noted, "What's best in me, and what's best in my message, is consistent with the tradition of Hawaii."

Glauberman and Burris offer concise lessons in Hawaii history to help the reader understand its racial and social climate, and how such an environment could impact a young man like Obama. For, as his wife, Michelle Obama, has said, "You can't really understand Barack until you understand Hawaii." Interviews with Obama's Punahou School classmates and teachers, as well as others who knew the Senator in his youth, add a personal dimension to the narrative. Obama's paternal and maternal family history and his years in Indonesia are also thoroughly covered.

Yes We Can: A Biography of President Barack Obama

THIS IS OUR MOMENT

“This is our time—to put people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth—that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope; and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.”

            — President Barack Obama, Acceptance Speech; Chicago, IL; November 4, 2008

Born in the U.S.A., the son of an African father and an American mother, a boy who spent his childhood in Indonesia and Hawaii, Barack Obama is truly a citizen of the world. In kindergarten, he wrote an essay titled, “I Want to Become President,” and now, with his fierce optimism, exuberant sense of purpose and determination, and above all, his belief that change can happen, Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, has made that dream come true.

Garen Thomas takes us through the life of Barack Obama, from his struggle to fit in with his classmates, and concern about not knowing his biological father, through his term as an Illinois senator, and the long campaign for president, to his historic victory.

Senator Obama Goes To Africa Barack Obama returns to his family's roots on an emotional journey to Africa-- the vast continent that is gaining increasing importance in this age of globalization. Part personal odyssey and part chronicle of diplomacy in action, this timely documentary follows Senator Obama as he travels to the land of his ancestry.

In South Africa we accompany Senator Obama and his wife Michelle on a trip to Robben Island - the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was jailed for 21 years. At a Darfur refugee camp in Chad, we see, through Obama's eyes, the devastating effects of genocide, and listen in to Senator Obama's discussions with victims of the crisis, U.N. officials, and other aid workers as he explores ways in which the United States can lend support to the victims.

The heart of the film is Obama's emotional homecoming to Kisumu, Kenya - his father's home - where thousands of people turn out to greet him. "It was completely overwhelming," says Michelle Obama, the Senator's wife. "It's hard to describe unless you were there--to see hundreds and thousands of people lining the streets of this very small town to greet my husband."

Throughout it all, Senator Obama narrates the film, giving his own perspective on the journey and the significance of Africa to U.S. interests. Additional perspective is included through interviews with experts on African affairs as well as with U.S. political commentators.

By the time he decimated the competition in 2004 race for the Illinois Senate, he was the bona fide golden child of a Democratic party desperately in need of a winner.
