Amazon.com Books: narcolepsy
Raymond Chandler meets Jonathan Lethem in this wickedly entertaining debut featuring Mark Genevich, Narcoleptic Detective Mark Genevich is a South Boston P.I. with a little problem: he’s narcoleptic, and he suffers from the most severe symptoms, including hypnogogic hallucinations. These waking dreams wreak havoc for a guy who depends on real-life clues to make his living. Clients haven’t exactly been beating down the door when Mark meets Jennifer Times—daughter of the powerful local D.A. and a contestant on American Star—who walks into his office with an outlandish story about a man who stole her fingers. He awakes from his latest hallucination alone, but on his desk is a manila envelope containing risqué photos of Jennifer. Are the pictures real, and if so, is Mark hunting a blackmailer, or worse? Wildly imaginative and with a pitch-perfect voice, The Little Sleep is the first in a new series that casts a fresh eye on the rigors of detective work, and introduces a character who has a lot to prove—if only he can stay awake long enough to do it. Narcolepsy-Master of Disguise: Evidence-Based Recommendations for Management (Postgraduate Medicine)
Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder affecting the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and other rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-associated manifestations (eg, hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis). The recognition of this disorder is usually delayed by 10 to 15 years, largely because of its protean manifestations, insidious nature, and lack of physician awareness. Delayed diagnosis is associated with poor quality of life, depression, and increased likelihood of accidents. Health care providers should include narcolepsy in the differential diagnosis of patients with excessive sleepiness, chronic fatigue, sleep-disordered breathing, depression, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Narcolepsy is a lifelong disorder that often requires pharmacological treatments, which may include wake-promoting stimulants for excessive sleepiness and γ-hydroxybutyrate (sodium oxybate) and antidepressants for REM sleep-associated manifestations. This article presents a case of a 47-year-old man with long-standing sleepiness and cataplexy who was eventually diagnosed with narcolepsy 30 years after the first onset of symptoms. The presenting manifestations of narcolepsy, diagnostic criteria, and its management are also discussed.Original Publication Date: May 2009 Author: Vahid Mohsenin Kindle Edition: 13 pages Kindle eBook Company: JTE Multimedia (2011-04-27) (2011-04-27) List Price: $9.99 Amazon Price:
This book provides accurate facts about all aspects of narcolepsy, a little-known neurological sleep disorder. It is estimated that 150,000-250,000 people in the U.S. have narcolepsy, but most of those have not yet been diagnosed. In the past, patients have seen an average of five or more physicians over a decade or longer before receiving a correct diagnosis of narcolepsy. As the public becomes better informed and more doctors are entering the field of sleep medicine, people are being diagnosed quicker and at an easlier age. A wealth of information about narcolepsy is available on the internet, but this 166-page book is the most comprehensive, single source of information to be found. In addition to facts, the author relates her personal experiences with all the symptoms and describes how the disorder has impacted her life. It is an excellent reference source and a self-help book rolled into one. People with narcolepsy usually have great difficulty reading a book without falling asleep. If anything can keep them awake, this book will. It is written in layman's terms, with a positive approach and amusing stories that encourage you to read on.
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to narcolepsy (also Gelineau's Syndrome; narcoleptic syndrome; paroxysmal sleep; sleep epilepsy), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on narcolepsy. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.Paperback: 188 pages Company: ICON Health Publications (2002-06-14) ISBN: 0597831718 List Price: $24.95 Amazon Price: $11.51 Used Price: $8.90
Twenty-one-year-old narcoleptic Angel Duet knows her father harbors secrets. He loves and protects her, but his suspicious refusal to discuss her mother s death drives Angel to worship an image created from the little history she does have: her father's sketchy stories and her mother's treasured photography, studies of clouds that have hung in the their foyer for more than twenty years. When her father's girlfriend moves in, the photographs come down, and Angel's search for truth becomes an obsession. As she struggles to uncover the past and gain control over the narcolepsy that often fogs her world, Angel descends into a dizzying realm of drugs, adultery, and confused desire that further obscures reality. As Angel begins to expose a history she could never have imagined, she discovers her entire life has been anchored around lies. Accepting the truth, once found, is the key to understanding herself, her family, and her life. To truly awaken, Angel must realize that sometimes the gifts we receive are not what we want--and only in time do we see their worth. At first glance, Aberrations is the story of a young woman who learns to live with her narcolepsy, and who struggles immensely to understand how her mom died when she was born and to discover who her mother really was. But the debut novel of Penelope Przekop moves insightfully into a whole other dimension, showing the reader how each of us lives a life of aberration, that we each have some kind of stigma or conflict or handicap to overcome. We also discover that having the strength to first seek out the truth and then to live with it can be quite challenging. The field of narcolepsy has developed enormously within the last 10 years. Indeed the understanding of the basics of sleep-wake regulation and the discovery of new neurotransmitter systems (the hypocretins) has boosted research and key findings in the field, providing important insights into how sleep is regulated. Consequently narcolepsy now receives a great deal of attention from both clinicians and scientists throughout the world. Narcolepsy: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment not only offers an engaging and comprehensive treatment of a fascinating disorder but also includes a DVD that offers a unique and large collection of movies displaying the symptoms of narcolepsy in people and animals. Written by some of the best experts in the field, the book focuses on the pathophysiology of the problem and also provides critical, up-to-date insights on the key clinical issues: how to diagnose the disorder, how to treat it, and how to best manage psychosocial problems. The first and only guide to span the latest advances in narcolepsy, this reference provides sections in etiology, neurochemistry, the role of the hypocretins in sleep-wake regulation, animal models in narcolepsy, the key role of the hypothalamus, REM-sleep dysregulation, diagnosis and classification, and treatment. Compiled by an international group of more than 30 authors, Narcolepsy: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment is an indispensable resource for all clinicians and scientists with an interest in narcolepsy.Hardcover: 444 pages Company: Springer (2011-07-01) ISBN: 1441983899 List Price: $239.00 Amazon Price: $94.91 Used Price: $92.54
Narcolepsy is a clinical syndrome defined by four symptoms: a compliant excessive sleepiness, a sudden bilateral loss of postural muscle tone, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations. When cataplexy is predominant, narcolepsy can be misdiagnosed as syncope or drop attacks. The authors of this book discuss how to correctly diagnosis narcolepsy and how to avoid certain pitfalls which would lead to erroneous treatments due to the misdiagnosis. Moreover, this book examines the role exerted by obesity in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy. This book underlines the importance of body weight as a factor influencing the narcolepsy, indicating also the possible therapeutic strategies by modifications of eating behavior. In addition, modafinil is a mild, wake-promoting stimulant that is pharmacologically distinct from other central nervous system stimulants. This book provides an overview of modafinil's effects on human and animal behavior and in the brain. Other chapters assess narcolepsy in children, the influences of orexin A in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy and the prevalence of periodic leg movements (PLM) in people who suffer from narcolepsy.Hardcover: 147 pages Company: Nova Science Pub Inc (2010-03-30) ISBN: 1608766454 List Price: $115.00 Amazon Price: $110.99 Used Price: $112.13 |
