Myers on Evidence in Child, Domestic And Elder Abuse (2 Volume Set)Myers on Evidence in Child, Domestic and Elder Abuse Cases is designed to assist judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, and expert witnesses working with child abuse, domestic violence, rape, stalking, and elder abuse.

Investigating and litigating cases of interpersonal violence is difficult. Knowledge of the rules of evidence and applicable case law is not enough to succeed. In addition to legal expertise, you must possess a thorough grounding in the pertinent medical and psychological literatures. With child and elder abuse, the vulnerability of the victim makes the work emotionally as well as legally taxing. With domestic violence, the tendency of some victims to change their mind about holding the perpetrator accountable frustrates law enforcement and prosecutors.

This newly updated 4th Edition provides in-depth analysis of the broad range of evidence issues arising in such cases. In addition to detailed textual discussion, the footnotes contain hundreds of cases from federal, military, and state courts. To make footnote cases most useful to busy professionals, the majority of cases are followed by brief descriptions and/or pertinent quotes. This information is included so the reader can assess whether it is worth the time to read the case in its entirety.

It is accurate to say that no other book comes close to the depth of legal analysis and case law on interpersonal violence that you will find in this essential 2-volume text.

The Death of a FamilyRyan, the eldest son of four children, systematically and lethally murders his family, without remorse or conscience. He abuses the trust placed in him by his dementia-afflicted mother and steals her lifesavings, leaving her a penniless pauper. More tragically, he robs her of her lifelong dream to have a perfect family and never be a burden to her children.

This story is unique in its message and its form. It is narrated from Tessa’s viewpoint at the age in which she remembers her experiences. It begins with family vignettes that insert the reader, often times with humor, into the heart of the family. The second part of the story is set in present day and is narrated through dialogue, emails, and legal documents that accurately detail the workings of our judicial system.

This story is a cautionary tale. It is the hard truth about the justice system, how it works and how it falls apart. It is about the worst kind of thief and a police detective that sanctions his actions. It is about how the system views elder abuse. It is about two sisters who fight for three years to right a terrible wrong, even after they were called squabbling siblings, were told to give up and were told to go away. In the end, their unshakeable bond rises like a phoenix from the ashes.

This novel is timely, in that there are millions of baby-boomers to whom it will speak. Unfortunately, many have already experienced this familial crime. Our family was a victim. It can happen to you. Others, who may be put in these conditions, can use this novel as a reference and a guide as well as enlightenment.

Ending Elder Abuse: A Family GuideNearly 1.6 million Americans now live in nursing homes. That number will double in the next twenty years, as medical science lengthens our life expectancies and the senior population grows. Inevitably, most of us will have to supervise the care of aging parents or grandparents, and every one of us faces the prospect of growing old and possibly frail. Thirty percent of elderly Americans say they would rather die than move into a nursing home. Their fears are well founded: Inspection documents show that more than a quarter of the nursing homes in the United States have been repeatedly cited for violations that caused serious harm or death to residents. In California, fully one third caused serious injury or death, and less than 2 percent of nursing homes had no violations!

Crime and Elder Abuse: An Integrated PerspectiveIn the last two decades, social scientists from various disciplines have begun to pay more attention to the victimization of elderly persons. In view of the significant increase of our aging population, crime will no doubt become a forceful issue in the lives of older adults. Only through advanced understanding will policymakers, practitioners, and educators be prepared to limit the negative consequences associated with the victimization of older adults. Each chapter in this text begins with a case scenario describing an elderly person’s victimization experience and the consequences of that experience. Chapter 1 examines myths about crimes against older adults, integrating crime and abuse, and includes a summary and plan of presentation. Chapter 2 discusses the manner in which social scientists have gauged the victimization experiences of older adults and the way that certain disciplines have ignored these incidents. Chapter 3 considers in full detail the specific types of offenses that pertains to elderly persons that have become targets. Chapter 4 contemplates the specific consequences of offenses against elderly persons and compares those consequences to those experienced by younger victims. Chapter 5 offers insight into the way that the criminal justice system and other decision makers detect and respond to crimes against the elderly. Chapter 6 examines various explanations of crimes and contrasts those explanations with theories aimed at describing youthful offenses. Chapter 7 offers recommendations for future research, policy, and programs dealing with crimes against the elderly. The concluding remarks and review questions incorporated into each chapter provides invaluable insight in the need for a better understanding of this growing issue.

Elder Abuse, Neglect, and Maltreatment: What Can Be Done to Stop ItThis timely analysis comes just as the Baby-Boomers are beginning to approach their retirement years. Elder abuse is already a problem of significant proportions, and the problem will only get worse as the proportion of elderly in the population increases. This look at the problem finds that much more emphasis needs to be put on the training of care givers, and on more careful selection of care givers in the first place. This, of course, implies higher standards, requiting a greater allocation of resources.

However, as the author cogently points out, this is a problem that will probably affect us all, sooner or later. We had best address it now, before the problem becomes insoluble.

It then provides systematic and realistic interventions.

This updated edition also includes information on legal interventions with suggestions on how the practitioner should act in the courtroom, give testimony, document findings, and prepare for legal involvement with the criminal justice system. Elder Abuse Prevention: Emerging Trends and Promising Strategies

"I found this book to be informative, well-researched, and well-thought out...The book is an asset to students, scholars, and seasoned practioners alike."

--International Perspectives in Victimology

"Lisa Nerenberg provides the first comprehensive look at elder abuse prevention trends and strategies. Drawing from existing models and examining salient factors, she outlines approaches to intervention that consider victims and perpetrators and engage communities and service systems. She also offers meaningful response to the many challenges endemic to elder abuse work. As a result, Lisa gives hope to the field."

"Beginning as a grassroots advocate a quarter century ago in San Francisco, Lisa developed and tested many viable elder abuse prevention programs herself through the local elder abuse network before exploring best practices elsewhere. This unique evolution and perspective gives her the depth and breadth of understanding needed to write a book like this, able to resonate equally with adult protective service workers struggling to manage caseloads of vulnerable elders, law enforcement personnel trying to prosecute abusers, and academics searching for effective responses to the problem."--
--Georgia J. Anetzberger, PhD, ACSW
Assistant Professor of Health Care Administration at Cleveland State University
and Editor of the Journal of Elder Abuse & Neglect

Recipient of the Legal Assistance for Seniors' "Leading the Fight for Seniors' Rights" annual award for 2007!

Drawing from over twenty years of experience helping communities improve their response to elder abuse, Lisa Nerenberg describes what agencies, communities, tribes, states, and national organizations are doing to prevent abuse, treat its effects, and ensure justice. She further explores what remains to be done and offers a plan for the future. In doing so, she addresses the broader challenges of fortifying the long-term care, protective service, and legal systems to meet the new and imminent demands of a burgeoning elderly population. In short, the book is about making communities safer places to grow old.

Ms. Nerenberg begins by exploring trends that have shaped or defined practice in the field of elder abuse prevention including the Supreme Court's Olmstead decision; a shift in focus from protecting to empowering victims; an increasingly multicultural elderly population; the "globalization" of the field; and heightened understanding of the "psychology of victimization" (or why victims do what they do and perhaps more importantly, why they often don't do what professionals think they should). She further describes eight models and theories on which practice has been based ranging from the widely recognized adult protective service and domestic violence prevention models to lesser-known approaches such as the family preservation and restorative justice models. She describes specific interventions and approaches that each model has contributed, their benefits and limitations, what is known about their impact, and factors that dictate what responses are appropriate to specific settings and situations.

In addition to describing techniques used by individual practitioners, the author outlines strategies and services that agencies, communities, states, tribes, courts, and national organizations have designed, which include elder forensics centers, elder courts, family justice centers, elder shelters, "hybrid" multidisciplinary teams, fraud prevention programs, support groups, restorative justice programs, and culturally specific outreach campaigns. She details progressive public policy initiatives, which range from statutes that provide for the mandatory reporting of deaths in nursing homes, to efforts to improve the collection and distribution of restitution, to laws that address the role of undue influence in elder abuse.

International Perspectives on Elder Abuse (Routledge Advances in Health and Social Policy)

Elder abuse has been increasingly recognised over the past ten years in many countries and progress has been made in both understanding and addressing the issue. This volume provides a much-needed international overview of the topic.

Opening with an examination of what elder abuse is, Amanda Phelan sets it in a theoretical context and looks at assessment and approaches to the issue in residential and community care environments. The book then presents a range of country studies, which provide an overview of the context of elder abuse in the country and a discussion of related policy, legislation, research and practice. Countries covered include Ireland, United Kingdom, Spain, China, Australia, Kenya, Israel, Canada and the United States, whilst a regional chapter looks at South America. A concluding chapter draws together cross-cultural comparisons and provides some guidance as to best practice.

The only comprehensive book in this area, International Perspectives on Elder Abuse is an invaluable reference for practitioners, academics and researchers from a range of disciplines, including nursing, social work, sociology, public health and social policy.

Preventing Sexual Abuse in Congregations: A Resource for LeadersAre you ready to abuse-proof your congregation? If one child or adult is spared the confusing ordeal of unwanted touch, it will be worth your time to read this book.

In this comprehensive resource, Methodist pastor and pastoral psychologist Karen McClintock demonstrates that sexual abuse in congregations is preventable and gives clergy and lay leaders the tools they need to prevent it. This book shows congregations how to protect children and vulnerable adults, prevent sexual harassment either by clergy or of clergy, and strengthen clergy families by raising awareness of the occupational and emotional risks inherent in pastoral ministry.

When you have finished this book, you will be familiar with the conditions in parishes and in the mental health of the individuals within them that lead to risky behaviors. You will be equipped to recognize and set sexual boundaries for yourself and to open dialogue about these issues in your congregation. You will have laughed at, celebrated, and honored human sexual power, pleasure, and vulnerability. You will have gained the knowledge you need, and perhaps the courage, to communicate these ideas within your congregation so that children and vulnerable adults are protected.

Health Care Reform and American Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know, Revised and Updated EditionThe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed by President Obama in March 2010 is a landmark in U.S. social legislation, and the Supreme Court's recent decision upholding the Act has ensured that it will remain the law of the land. The new law extends health insurance to nearly all Americans, fulfilling a century-long quest and bringing the United States to parity with other industrial nations. Affordable Care aims to control rapidly rising health care costs and promises to make the United States more equal, reversing four decades of rising disparities between the very rich and everyone else. Millions of people of modest means will gain new benefits and protections from insurance company abuses - and the tab will be paid by privileged corporations and the very rich.

How did such a bold reform effort pass in a polity wracked by partisan divisions and intense lobbying by special interests? What does Affordable Care mean-and what comes next? In this updated edition of Health Care Reform and American Politics: What Everyone Needs to Know, Lawrence R. Jacobs and Theda Skocpol-two of the nation's leading experts on politics and health care policy-provide a concise and accessible overview. They explain the political battles of 2009 and 2010, highlighting White House strategies, the deals Democrats cut with interest groups, and the impact of agitation by Tea Partiers and progressives. Jacobs and Skocpol spell out what the new law can do for everyday Americans, what it will cost, and who will pay. In a new section, they also analyze the impact the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the law. Above all, they explain what comes next, as critical yet often behind-the-scenes battles rage over implementing reform nationally and in the fifty states. Affordable Care still faces challenges at the state level despite the Court ruling. But, like Social Security and Medicare, it could also gain strength and popularity as the majority of Americans learn what it can do for them.

Duty Bound: Elder Abuse and Family Care (SAGE Library of Social Research)Reporting the results of a study on abuse of the elderly by adult children, Dynamics of Elder Abuse examines the impact that caring for an elderly patient has on the lives of middle-aged and sometimes elderly caregiving offspring.

The data are derived from in-depth interviews with 104 caregivers, and is used to detail the daily tasks of caregivers and the resulting stress, conflict and abuse. Correlating information such as the nature of the tasks performed and the amount of stress and burden perceived by the caregiver, Steinmetz analyzes the relationship between the level of dependency, stress produced by the dependency and the level of abuse, and addresses intergenerational patterns of control and abuse interaction

Understanding Elder Abuse in Minority PopulationsResearch on elder abuse in the United States has made great strides in recent years. As a result, we have been able to define and discover the causes of elder abuse, design tools to assess the risk of abuse, develop and implement treatment and prevention strategies, and evaluate programs for victims and perpetrators. However, this research has been derived from studies whose subjects were primarily Caucasian. This is not because elder abuse does not take place in minority communities, but rather because researchers wanted first to study the issue in its broadest sense.

Male Victims of Elder Abuse: Their Experiences and Needs (Violence and Abuse Series)Older men may, like older women, be victims of abuse - yet there has been little in either research or service provision to reflect this. Drawing on in-depth interviews with twelve older men who have experienced abuse, Jacki Pritchard presents much-needed practical guidance for care professionals, managers and policy makers working with this group. She describes the different kinds of abuse experienced by the men, which can include not only financial, physical, emotional and sexual abuse, but also physical and emotional neglect, and goes on to establish in detail the needs of older male victims of abuse and how they should be addressed. As well as having their emotional needs and their need for support over past abuse met, the men need a physical place of safety, medical care and the cultural awareness and continuous support of professional carers. This book presents clear guidelines for both the initial assessment of need and for good practice in the long term. It will enable all those working with older people to understand better the phenomenon of the abuse of older men and to apply this understanding to effective service provision. This new series forms a set of accessible books for practitioners, managers and policy makers working in social and health care, probation and criminology. Each book draws on a key piece of research or current practice relating to violence and abuse to give practical guidance on new ways of working with both victims and perpetrators to bring about positive change.

The Clinical Management of Elder Abuse (Clinical Gerontologist)Learn to detect elder abuse—and provide the help that your neglected or abused elderly clients need!

Even to clinicians experienced in managing difficult client situations, elder abuse is perplexing, complex, and ethically charged. This kind of abuse can be hard to detect, with its subtle manifestations and indicators that could just as easily reflect other problems or illnesses. It can seem impossible to control, particularly when the victim refuses help or denies the seriousness of mistreatment. Moreover, decision-making when dealing with interventions for elder abuse is rarely easy and is frequently clouded by ethical dilemmas.

The Clinical Management of Elder Abuse can help. This essential guide for present and future clinicians provides you with multidisciplinary perspectives on detecting elder abuse situations and interventions that can make a real difference in the lives of clients. Three case studies are presented and then examined from the professional perspectives of an attorney, a physician, a nurse, and a social worker. What these professionals have to say will leave you better informed about the dynamics and complexities of elder abuse, about important steps that must be taken in the clinical management of elder abuse, and about the importance and application of multidisciplinary teams in elder abuse work. The handy figures, lists of definitions, and tables you’ll find in this well-referenced book make important concepts and complex information easy to access and understand.

The Clinical Management of Elder Abuse shows how professionals in the above disciplines can address the effects of elder abuse, which may manifest as: physical effects, including pain and injury, sleep disturbances, eating problems, and headaches behavioral effects, including anger, helplessness, reduced coping abilities, and suicidal actions psychological effects, which can be wide-ranging and include denial, fear, anxiety, and depression social effects, such as increased dependence, withdrawal, and lessened contact with the outside world As the baby boom generation ages, incidents of elder abuse are certain to continue to increase. Whether you are a student, an educator, an experienced clinician, or a novice in the field, The Clinical Management of Elder Abuse is a resource that you’ll return to again and again as you work to improve the lives of this important, growing population.

Elder Mistreatment: Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation in an Aging AmericaSince the late 1970s, when Congressman Claude Pepper held widely publicized hearings on the mistreatment of the elderly, policy makers and practitioners have sought ways to protect older Americans from physical, psychological, and financial abuse. Yet, during the last 20 years fewer than 50 articles have addressed the shameful problem that abusers - and sometimes the abused themselves - want to conceal. "Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America" takes a giant step toward broadening our understanding of the mistreatment of the elderly and recommends specific research and funding strategies that can be used to deepen it. The book includes a discussion of the conceptual, methodological, and logistical issues needed to create a solid research base as well as the ethical concerns that must be considered when working with older subjects. It also looks at problems in determination of a report's reliability and the role of physicians, EMTs, and others who are among the first to recognize situations of mistreatment. "Elder Mistreatment in an Aging America" will be of interest to anyone concerned about the elderly and ways to intervene when abuse is suspected, including family members, caregivers, and advocates for the elderly. It will also be of interest to researchers, research sponsors, and policy makers who need to know how to advance our knowledge of this problem.

Honor Betrayed: Sexual Abuse in America's MilitaryIn Honor Betrayed, Dr. Mic Hunter probes beyond the headlines to reveal the reality of sexual abuse in the military. The culture of the military's training is to turn recruits into those who follow orders without question. Honor Betrayed describes in detail the gross realities of the hostile, uber-masculine, dehumanizing environment our young men and women confront. Most vulnerable to sexual abuse are minorities-particularly women and homosexuals. Included are first-person accounts from American servicewomen and men who were sexually abused by their comrades, including one woman whose case was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court. Hunter also explores the tacit acceptance of these incidents in the military to the recent prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.

Homosexuality and Elder Abuse: How the Search for Gay Fulfillment Can Aid in the Financial Abuse Of Senior Citizens

Right now predators of the elderly are cruising senior citizen facilities looking for elders to take advantage of. One way they do that is to look for senior citizens who are gay or gay curious.

Get this book to also get all the tips anyone would need to protect themselves and their senior citizen loved ones from predators of the elderly, no matter what the senior citizen's sexual orientation is.

When an elder decides to explore their homosexual side late in life, a disastrous perfect storm could await them.

* If others around him know about his interest in homosexuality, they might feel in this day and age it's his right to be gay and nervously leave him alone about it. This could take out of focus the red flags that would otherwise come up about the financial abuse going on in the relationship.

* Predators of the elderly tend to do whatever they need to do to better fleece their prey. If that means acting gay when they otherwise wouldn?t, so be it.

* Senior citizen?s cognitive processes likely have dulled due to age. The victim could feel (or be made to feel) that he has more in common with the predator than his family.

* If this is the first gay relationship in many years, or decades, then the very nature of the experience, and how it could be judged by others, could make him feel emotionally more vulnerable.

* His sexual orientation could now make him more vulnerable to financial blackmail.

* Like so often occurs in romantic and other types of emotional relationships, when we get close to someone, we can let our guard down.

* The senior citizen may have mobility issues such as not being able to drive. This increases his need for a friend to help him with that. He thus may feel more pressure to put up with the needs and demands of the predator for the sake of helping himself get around.

* If they live in a senior citizen facility, they may not have family and other close friends constantly watching over them. Predators cruise senior citizen facilities looking for prey. That is exactly what happened to my father.

* Without knowing it, the victim might live in one of the 50 states that have less potent elder abuse laws, thus predators gravitate there as they know they?re less likely to be persecuted for their theft.

The Absolutely Essential Guide to Understanding Elder Financial AbuseBy cruising senior citizen facilities, or meeting seniors in other ways, predators of the elderly can have a much higher payday than many other crimes. Also, the predator probably can make it look like the money or property was gifted to them, thus they’ll claim no crime was committed. There are a number of factors that can open up a senior citizen to financial abuse. If a romantic relationship is occurring, whether it’s heterosexual or homosexual, often there are changes in emotions that can make one of them more responsive to the demands of the other. That includes letting one’s guard down financially, and/or becoming unreasonably generous. There is also dealing with the blackmail, if it occurs.

The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn EvilWhat makes good people do bad things? How can moral people be seduced to act immorally? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it?

Renowned social psychologist Philip Zimbardo has the answers, and in The Lucifer Effect he explains how–and the myriad reasons why–we are all susceptible to the lure of “the dark side.” Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent men and women.

Zimbardo is perhaps best known as the creator of the Stanford Prison Experiment. Here, for the first time and in detail, he tells the full story of this landmark study, in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into “guards” and “inmates” and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners.

By illuminating the psychological causes behind such disturbing metamorphoses, Zimbardo enables us to better understand a variety of harrowing phenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide to how once upstanding American soldiers came to abuse and torture Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib. He replaces the long-held notion of the “bad apple” with that of the “bad barrel”–the idea that the social setting and the system contaminate the individual, rather than the other way around.

This is a book that dares to hold a mirror up to mankind, showing us that we might not be who we think we are. While forcing us to reexamine what we are capable of doing when caught up in the crucible of behavioral dynamics, though, Zimbardo also offers hope. We are capable of resisting evil, he argues, and can even teach ourselves to act heroically. Like Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem and Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate, The Lucifer Effect is a shocking, engrossing study that will change the way we view human behavior.

Liar's Poker

The time was the 1980s. The place was Wall Street. The game was called Liar’s Poker.

Michael Lewis was fresh out of Princeton and the London School of Economics when he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush.

Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years—a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business. From the frat-boy camaraderie of the forty-first-floor trading room to the killer instinct that made ambitious young men gamble everything on a high-stakes game of bluffing and deception, here is Michael Lewis’s knowing and hilarious insider’s account of an unprecedented era of greed, gluttony, and outrageous fortune.

The Web of Violence: Exploring Connections Among Different Forms of Interpersonal Violence and Abuse (SpringerBriefs in Sociology)There is an increasing appreciation of the interconnections among all forms of violence. These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

Ageism and Elder AbuseAs an ism ageism reflects a prejudice in society against older adults. Ageist attitudes are perpetuated in many ways, for example, by the lack of positive images of the elderly in advertisements and on TV programmes and the widespread use of demeaning language about old age. The intentional mistreatment of or harm to elderly persons is elder abuse. Abuser can be any one that an older person comes in contact with. For example, he may be caregiver, a neighbour, or any other member who has a negative attitude towards the elderly persons. Mostly, they are abused by family members and relatives. Abuse can be verbal, psychological, emotional, financial and physical. Due to the fear of victimization, elderly people isolate themselves, and thereby become a prisoner in their own home . Twenty-six papers divided into two parts highlight the various issues relating to ageism and elder abuse in developed and developing countries. This volume will be a valuable source material to psychologists, sociologists, social workers and gerontologists in planning the strategies to combat ageism and elder abuse in society at large.

The DeceptionCreation or evolution? Did God speak everything into existence or was it all made through natural processes? Does it really matter, anyway? Dr. Jeff Duncan, the newly hired biology professor at Grogan University, is about to discover the truth.

The Genesis Creation, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel...Jeff was taught all the classic Bible stories as a child, and although he accepted them at face value, he was never taught how to defend his faith, nor were his Sunday school teachers able to provide answers to the many questions he asked. Faced with a series of life-altering events, Jeff is forced to choose between his childhood faith and the evolutionary biology he learned in college and has now been hired to teach. If the historical accounts in Genesis are not true, then what about the rest of the Bible? Jeff begins to question everything he had been taught as a child and almost denies his faith altogether, but God has something else in store for him.

Why couldn’t Jeff ever establish a firm foundation as a child and understand his faith back then? Shouldn’t the people who were teaching him in church every Sunday be able to answer his questions? Were his Sunday school teachers deceiving him all those years by just telling about Bible “stories,” or, now as a professor of evolution, is Jeff part of…the deception?

Justice for All: Ending Elder Abuse, Neglect and Financial ExploitationThe most recent study of the extent of elder abuse estimated that 14.1 percent of noninstitutionalized older adults had experienced physical, psychological, or sexual abuse; neglect; or financial exploitation in
the past year. This study and three other key studies GAO identified likely underestimate the full extent of elder abuse, however. Most did not ask about all types of abuse or include all types of older adults living in the community, such as those with cognitive impairments. In addition, studies in this area cannot be used to track changes in extent over time because they have not measured elder abuse consistently.

Elder abuse comes in many different forms – physical abuse, emotional abuse, or financial abuse. Each one is devastating in its own right. Many times, sadly, as with my situation, the elder abuse involves a family member. When that happens, you feel scared, disappointed, angry, and you can't believe this is happening to you. You feel overwhelmed. The strength you need to fight it is complicated. You're afraid, but you're also thinking about your other family members. You're thinking about the potential criticism of your family and friends. They may not want to accept the dysfunction that you need to share. Because you love your family and for other reasons, you might feel hesitant to come forward. You might not be able to make rational decisions. What other people see as generosity may, in reality, be the exploitation, manipulation, and sadly, emotional blackmail of older, more vulnerable members of the American public.

States are primarily responsible for protecting older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. In each state, an Adult Protective Services (APS) program aims to identify, investigate, resolve, and prevent such abuse. On the federal level, two statutes establish the government's role and responsibility with regard to elder justice in general—the Older Americans Act of 1965 (OAA) and the Elder Justice Act of 2009 (EJA).

Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (Guilford Substance Abuse Series)
This manual presents the first empirically studied, integrative treatment approach developed specifically for PTSD and substance abuse. For persons with this prevalent and difficult-to-treat dual diagnosis, the most urgent clinical need is to establish safety--to work toward discontinuing substance use, letting go of dangerous relationships, and gaining control over such extreme symptoms as dissociation and self-harm. The manual is divided into 25 specific units or topics, addressing a range of different cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Each topic provides highly practical tools and techniques to engage patients in treatment; teach "safe coping skills" that apply to both disorders; and restore ideals that have been lost, including respect, care, protection, and healing. Structured yet flexible, topics can be conducted in any order and in a range of different formats and settings. The volume is designed for maximum ease of use with a large format, lay-flat binding, and helpful reproducible therapist sheets and handouts.

The concept of elder abuse and neglect as a social problem continues to remain illusive. A major impediment has been the absence of research and clear definition of the problem, and a book which summarizes what is known about elder abuse has been needed for a long time. Drawing on examples from the US and the UK, this book is a contribution to research and information currently available. The authors define elderly abuse broadly. While physical abuse is one aspect of the problem, Bennet and Kingston also study financial, emotional, sexual and psychological abuse and neglect. In addition, they cover practical concerns of recognition, intervention, prevention and related legal issues. With its multidisciplinary approach, this book is appropriate for nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, geriatricians and all other health care professionals involved in elderly care.

Elder Abuse in Perspective (Rethinking Aging Series)What is elder abuse? How can it be explained and understood? Why now? What can be done about it? Elder abuse is now recognized as a serious social problem on both sides of the Atlantic and Australia. Our understanding and responses to it will have profound implications for the quality of older people's lives and their place in society. "Elder Abuse in Perspective" examines how the mistreatment of older people is defined, theorized and researched. It places the problem in its social and historical context, giving special attention to forms of abuse within families, communities, and institutions like hospitals and residential homes. The book looks at issues around training and elder abuse, and explores the most effective methods of intervention and prevention. "Elder Abuse in Perspective" challenges many commonly held assumptions and provides new insight into elder abuse and neglect. It is perhaps the first book in recent years to provide a critical and reflective analysis of this growing social issue. It is an essential addition to the library of practitioners, researchers and students of old age.

Alzheimer's AbuseThis training DVD addresses the urgent need for nursing staff to recognize and prevent Alzheimer’s abuse in institutional environments. As these residents can’t verbally communicate their distress, Dr. Peter Rabins and nursing assistants identify the following behaviors which may either precipitate  or indicate abuse or neglect. These include: agitation, catastrophic reactions, withdrawn behaviors, sudden increase in confusion; and emotional distress which may be manifested in crying or changes in sleeping/eating patterns.

Many of these behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease may trigger staff anger or frustration resulting in physical or verbal abuse.  Proper training ensures that staff understand that these behaviors are part of the disease and have appropriate responses. Perhaps the most frequent form of abuse for the Alzheimer’s patient is neglect. All too often patients with Alzheimer’s disease are left in their rooms for extended periods of time, not changed or cleaned as frequently as other patients, and allowed to remain in pain.

Strategies to prevent abuse and neglect include: the importance of knowing each resident; recognizing behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease; responding to changes in behavior; and, making sure to involve residents as much as possible in daily life.

Elder Abuse: Detection, Management, and Prevention (NCME Video 854)Elder abuse is one of the fastest-growing forms of domestic violence in the United States. Each year, an estimated 1 to 2 million elderly Americans are victims of physical, emotional, financial, or other abuse. Americans over the age of 80 years are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer abuse than are younger adults; yet most cases of elder abuse go undetected. In this video program, Dr. Barbara Paris, an international expert on elder abuse and a long-time advocate for the rights of elders, explains how to recognize elderly patients who are at risk for or who are victims of mistreatment, and presents steps that can be taken to protect and monitor elderly patients who are victims of abuse or neglect.

Reno 911!: The Complete Sixth Season"I could have sworn for sure we were canceled," a surprised Lt. Dangle (Thomas Lennon) greets the cameras in the season opener. Prophetic words. Comedy Central has since unceremoniously retired this veteran series, but happily not before revealing the origins of Dangle's short-shorts style and that the unfortunate Dep. Trudy Wiegel (Kerri Kenney-Silver) was once smoking hot. Reno 911! may not go out with guns blazing, but there are enough moments of truly inspired lunacy to warrant one last ride along with Wahoe County's funniest. There are two new faces on the force following the departures of ensemble members Wendi McLendon-Covey, Carlos Alazraqui, and Mary Birdsong (their characters are said to have perished in the taco stand explosion that ended season 5). Both have excellent priors. Joe Lo Truglio, as loose cannon Frank Rizzo, was a member of The State. Ian Roberts, as former Chicago cop Jack Declan, earned his stripes as a member of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Both characters are considerably more hardcore than their predecessors. Rizzo makes Denzel Washington from Training Day look like Sgt. Joe Friday. In one episode he relentlessly harasses the soccer coach who won't play his son. In another, he compels his new partner Dep. Jones (Cedric Yarbrough) to perform illicit and unprintable acts while undercover.

To its credit, Reno 911! did not mellow over its six-season run. It continued to brazenly cross the PC line with impunity, as witness the department's senior abuse PSAs and an encounter with an unrepentant teacher who has been having sex with one of her teenage students. The series enlisted some notable accomplices this season, including Rainn Wilson as a cunning serial killer with escalating demands (like watching Cold Mountain) before he will reveal where a body is buried, Jane Lynch as a couples therapist, George Lopez as Reno's mayor, who may have committed bigamy with a maniacal hooker, Jonah Hill as a terminated employee who will not go quietly, Patton Oswalt as a criminal extradited to Thailand, and Craig Robinson as a linoleum-floor pitchman. Dangle and company may be dumb, but they're not clueless, and after watching them suffer no end of humiliation, it's nice to also see them get the upper hand every once in awhile. In one episode, Junior (Robert Ben Garant) reveals how to crash an Italian wedding. In another, Dangle eggs on a hippie protester who has become a Reno tourist attraction. "Y'all can't be cops," a citizen protests at one point. "This must be a joke." Yes, it was a joke, and a great one while it lasted. --Donald Liebenson

Episode 3. Elder Abuse
Guests: Jim Clapp, Carol Pickup, Ron Winter

For many people, growing older brings a fate worse than death - having their rights, liberty and assets removed. It is not uncommon for people, when they cross the threshold of old age, to be declared legally incapable. When that happens, virtually every decision about their life will be made by someone else - right down to what they wear, who they can see, and whether they receive medical care or not. Often, they end up spending their last days - or years - confined to an institution living a life which is sub-standard by almost every measure.

Despite their best efforts to ensure his or her golden years are secure in body, mind and assets, an older person is particularly vulnerable to abuse through the legal process. Carefully-constructed plans and legal directives can be cast aside, leaving the elderly person prey to all forms of abuse. Few people know just how vulnerable they are, legally and otherwise. The appointment of powers of attorney or health care proxy decision-makers are rendered null and void if someone successfully petitions the court to have the person declared incapable and to become their legal guardian. And, the law allows anyone to make an application to become a person's legal guardian. Adult guardianship is often sought because of illness or mental incapacity of an older person, but it can also happen because other people (sometimes with the assistance or permission of public bodies) seek to gain control over the elderly person's assets, and their lives in a deceptive and fraudulent manner. Indeed, this phenomenon is on the increase in North America, so much so, that it now has a name - "granny snatching". Granny snatchers use the law as the means to their deceitful ends. Fraud and abuse of the elderly is rising, and the lure of the collective wealth of the Boomer Generation is a magnet for unscrupulous people. Elder law has been described as "the hottest practice area" in the legal profession today, and for good reason.

Episode 4. Family Law Mediation
Guests: Kathleen-Purvis-Bellamano, Michael Lomax

We are going to talk about the most important and most popular form of alternate dispute resolution: mediation. Most people who resolve their family law disputes by going to court, will tell you that the experience was time-consuming, expensive, complicated, and very stressful. Well, of course it is. Imagine! They're asking a total stranger to make important decisions about themselves, their finances, and their children. I believe that many of the parents that we see in family court could have resolved their disputes in a much more positive and healing way, if they'd gone to mediation. What is mediation? How does it work? How long does it take? How much does it cost? And how do you know if it's right for you? Our guests today are well-qualified to answer all of those questions, and much, much more.

ABC News Primetime Basic Instincts 1: What Would You Do?"Primetime: Basic Instincts" brings some of most well known intellectual theories and psychological experiments to life for the first time to test people's innate decision making process. This limited series looks at everyday problems from weight loss to examining how small the world is, how closely connected we all are, what people are willing to do simply because someone in authority tells them to. This five-part series features reports from John Quinones, Jay Schadler and Chris Cuomo, and finds that what people say they would do in a given situation is quite different than what they actually do.

This first installment begins with a hidden-camera series, "What Would You Do?," that captures people's reactions when confronted with dilemmas compelling them to either act or mind their own business, intervene or walk on by. Using hidden cameras, "Primetime" sets up five scenarios where there may be no clear right or wrong answer, but which demand a decision nonetheless. John Quinones reports on people's split-second, and often surprising, decision-making process.

Preventing and Reducing Negative and Abusive ResponsesEveryone who works in long term care or assisted living comes in contact with resident behaviors that could potentially precipitate negative or abusive caregiver responses. These behaviors are generally related to a medical condition and can include such things as calling out, swearing, racial slurs, striking out, grabbing or refusing necessary care. Nursing staff in this program relate their personal experiences with residents having these behaviors. They make a number of valuable suggestions to prevent and reduce negative responses.

All agree, rule number one is always remaining calm. They explain that knowing your resident will help you decide the most appropriate way to handle a verbal or physical outburst. For some residents distraction or re-direction works, for others, simply walking away and coming back several minutes later is the solution. They also discuss many other strategies including: the importance of knowing when to get help; safety issues; and the emotional cost of dealing with these behaviors.

This DVD provides both ways to prevent the escalation of destructive behaviors as well as guidelines for caregivers on how to reduce negative and abusive responses should these behaviors be encountered.

This program is presented by Georgia Stevens, PhD, APRN, BC.

Caring for Disordered Behavior in the Nursing HomeTwenty years ago, the unique opportunity came about to film in a nursing home which had a population of residents with extreme disordered behaviors. These behaviors included: yelling and physically acting out; pushing away nursing assistants who came to help with dressing and bathing; and, shouting and swearing when staff needed to take vital signs. Peter V. Rabins, MD, came to the nursing home to observe the behaviors and to work with the staff in caring for these residents.

This DVD presents the residents as they refuse care and physically and verbally threaten staff. Nursing assistant talk with Dr. Rabins and together, they develop strategies and interventions to reassure the residents and make them realize that staff are there to help them. These strategies remain relevant today.

Staff working in long-term care and assisted living with confused or agitated residents will find this DVD essential. Recommended for students training to work with the elderly.

Understanding Why Elder Abuse Happens: Why Staff Lose ItMost nursing assistants working with the elderly in long term care have a compassionate caring life attitude. However, for nearly everyone there are certain factors or combinations of situations which can break through and threaten appropriate professional behavior. Give your staff the tools they need for stress management in long-term care.

In this DVD, Dr. Georgia Stevens leads a discussion with long-term care staff addressing potential factors which cause inappropriate staff responses. Staff discuss the stress of working in long-term care; the frustration of working short-staffed; the need to respond to multiple simultaneous demands; and the stress of dealing with difficult residents. Guidelines are presented to deal effectively with these and other situations.

This program is excellent for staff working in long-term care, assisted living and adult day care and for students training to work as  nursing assistants.

Resident's Rights: The Right to Quality ADL Care (2012-10-25)

Elder abuse is one of the fastest-growing forms of domestic violence in the United States.

Hidden Neglect AbuseNeglect is the most prevalent form of abuse in long-term care. “Everybody is somebody until they die,” says one nursing assistant, yet all too often, this basic premise is ignored.

In this DVD, Dr. Georgia Stevens leads a discussion of nursing assistants who define neglect. The traditional definition of neglect includes: not providing appropriate ADL care; not changing soiled residents; not responding to call bells; ignoring reported pain; and allowing residents to stay for extended period of time alone in their room. But nursing assistants point out, neglect goes far beyond these things. They expand the definition to include: not knowing who a resident is; ignoring who a resident is as a person; and not recognizing a resident’s individuality. Not knowing what a person likes to do, not knowing about personal preferences, and not respecting choices are all neglect and are all abuse.

Staff development in long-term care and assisted living as well as students in health professional training programs will benefit from the information presented by this DVD.

Abuse: The Resident's PerspectiveAbuse is far more than rough or violent physical interactions. For frail elderly, unable to care for themselves, abuse may be neglect, ridicule, negative attitudes, verbal disrespect, lack of response to reported pain, failure to observe or report poor response to a medication or change in mental status, or lack of assistance required. In this insightful DVD, interviews with older individuals redefine the word "abuse." While these individuals live in a nursing home, their expanded definition is relevant for individuals in assisted living, day care programs or rehabilitation facilities.
Find out what it feels like to be thirsty, hungry or soiled with no one responding to your needs. Hear about being ignored when you’re in pain, when you have a new medical complication or when your day has been ruined by some one who does not respect you. Even not having your choices respected about what you wish to wear, where you want to sit, or your food preferences is a form of abuse. These seniors make a desperate plea to be treated with dignity, as individuals of worth. Hearing the words in their own voices is far more powerful than any presentation. This DVD should be used by all programs training staff who will be working with the elderly.

Speaking Out on Abuse: The Resident's PerspectiveUnderstanding and responding to a resident’s physical and emotional needs is the basic foundation of quality care in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Find out directly from residents what happens when this basic premise is disregarded intentionally or not.

With great emotion, residents define abuse from their perspective. Frail and unable to function independently, their well being is dependent on others. Often unable to get out of bed by themselves, the call bell may be their only way of communicating with nursing staff. To them, a call bell ignored is a call for help ignored. To be neglected, to be left in pain, and to be allowed to remain soiled are all unacceptable to them.

Residents also emphasize that negative, critical and demeaning comments or attitudes are very hurtful and never appropriate. Their only connection with the world each day may be nursing staff, so they explain the importance of courteous, positive and empathetic interactions.

Far more powerful than any text book or lecture, these older individuals, speaking for themselves, make the viewer realize why abuse has been re-defined by long term care residents.

Understanding Why Elder Abuse Happens: When Residents Push the LimitsIn an interactive discussion with nursing assistants working in a long-term care facility, Dr. Stevens hears about resident behaviors which could potentially trigger abuse. Staff describe actual experiences they’ve had with physically and verbally abusive, and uncooperative  residents. While under time pressure to deliver required care, nursing assistants discuss how they must take additional time to positively respond to residents with these obstructive and potentially dangerous behaviors.

“What happens when a resident hits you?” asks Dr. Stevens. Examining this situation and several others in which residents push the limits, the nursing staff and Dr. Stevens develop guidelines which will be useful to everyone working with the elderly. First of all, no matter what a resident does, they emphasize the importance of not shouting, not showing anger or being reactive. These responses are forms of abuse and will cause the situation to escalate and become out of control. They emphasize, even if you are feeling angry or threatened, that it is essential to respond with patience and understanding, appreciating that difficult behaviors may be associated with age related illness. If the behavior continues, as long as the resident is safe and not in a position to hurt other residents, they suggest that the best thing to do is walk away and come back later when the resident calms down or find another staff member to take over the situation. Other suggestions are included in the video.

Elder Abuse and Neglect (Caregiving Series: Vol. 7) [The Home Care Companion Video Collection](1 VHS Video) This program addresses elder abuse in the elder's family home and is designed for home health agencies, hospices, community service agencies, and others who train professional and family caregivers. Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an elder by someone who has a relationship with that elder. It can be a spouse, adult child, friend, neighbor, or a caregiver. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, more than two-thirds of the abusers are family members. This program defines the complexities of elder abuse and the different forms of abuse: physical, sexual, neglect, self-neglect, emotional or psychological, financial, and abandonment. Each form is defined and the signs and symptoms of that form of abuse are identified.
