Amazon.com Books: cocaine addiction
Although the media focus on the rise of cocaine use and the evils of its abuse, the public receives little real information about the scope of the problem and its treatment. This timely, practical, and honest volume gets to the heart of the cocaine addiction problem. Cocaine Solutions not only addresses the difficulties experienced by addicts and their families in coping with the devastating financial, emotional, and psychological toll that addiction takes, it also identifies specific sources of help that exist for addicts and their families. Both recovered drug addicts themselves, the authors discuss some of the obstacles to recovery and the ways to overcome them. Cocaine Solutions includes the stories of recovering addicts to illustrate firsthand what addicts’lives are like, giving you a better understanding of the people who are afflicted with the disease of addiction. This important book is required reading for a wide audience--cocaine addicts, potential addicts, the families of addicted or potentially addicted persons, professionals who see addiction daily in their patients, and anyone who is interested in the problem of cocaine addiction.Author: Bruce Carruth, Jennifer Rice Licare, Katharine Delaney Mcloughlin Hardcover: 156 pages Company: Routledge (1990-10-30) ISBN: 1560240350 List Price: $59.95 Amazon Price: $50.99 Used Price: $44.86

From acclaimed medical historian Howard Markel, author of When Germs Travel, the astonishing account of the years-long cocaine use of Sigmund Freud, young, ambitious neurologist, and William Halsted, the equally young, pathfinding surgeon. Markel writes of the physical and emotional damage caused by the then-heralded wonder drug, and how each man ultimately changed the world in spite of it—or because of it. One became the father of psychoanalysis; the other, of modern surgery. Author: Howard Markel Hardcover: 352 pages Deckle Edge Company: Pantheon (2011-07-19) (2011-07-19) ISBN: 0375423303 List Price: $28.95 Amazon Price: $13.98 Used Price: $12.00
With sharp wit, self-deprecating humor, and penetrating honesty, New York Times journalist Dave Itzkoff turns a keen eye on his life with the mysterious, maddening, much-loved man of whom he writes, “for the first eight years of my life I seem to have believed he was the product of my imagination.”Itzkoff’s father was the man who lumbered home at night and spent hours murmuring to his small son about his dreams and hopes for the boy’s future, and the fears and failures of his own past. He was the hard-nosed New York fur merchant with an unexpectedly emotional soul; a purveyor of well-worn anecdotes and bittersweet life lessons; a trusted ally in childhood revolts against motherly discipline and Hebrew school drudgery; a friend, advisor, and confidant. He was also a junkie. In Cocaine’s Son, Itzkoff chronicles his coming of age in the disjointed shadow of his father’s double life—struggling to reconcile his love for the garrulous protector and provider, and his loathing for the pitiful addict. Through his adolescent and teen years Itzkoff is haunted by the spectacle of his father’s drug-fueled depressions and disappearances. In college, Itzkoff plunges into his own seemingly fated bout with substance abuse. And later, an emotional therapy session ends in the intense certainty that he will never overcome the same demons that have driven the older man. But when his father finally gets clean, a long “morning after” begins for them both. And on a road trip across the country and back into memory, in search of clues and revelations, together they discover that there may be more binding them than ever separated them. Unsparing and heartbreaking, mordantly funny and powerfully felt, Cocaine’s Son clears a place for Dave Itzkoff in the forefront of contemporary memoirists. This text is about conducting effective psychotherapy with people who are addicted to cocaine. While its emphasis is on the people themselves rather than on the drug or the phenomenon of addiction, the discussion centres around the fact that these people are addicted to cocaine as it threads its way through every aspect of their lives. The meanings and subjective effects of the cocaine experience, including getting high, coming down, searching for the drug, slipping or lapsing back into drug use, all become integrated into the particular personality of each individual user. To understand someone - anyone - it is critical to understand their relationships. With addicts, these relationships include not only other people, but also their drugs which are inevitably personified. This book shows how to use the therapeutic relationship to understand the drug relationship, and in so doing help addicts free themselves to have more satisfying and productive lives.Author: David Mark, Jeffrey Faude Hardcover: 274 pages Company: Jason Aronson, Inc. "The Cocaine Zone" is a real-life cautionary tale that hopes to help you stay away from the addictive drugs of coke and crack cocaine. Yet, it also tells of all the true nitty-gritty surrounding the drug world... and dishes the dirt.It notes that marijuana is typically the gateway drug which leads people into a cocaine or crack habit simply because needing to buy an illegal drug puts you around people who sell other drugs. And those drug dealers are always willing to give out free samples in hopes that you like them. Once you're hooked, you're theirs. They prey upon that fact. That's why a crack addict told the author many times: "One hit's too many, and a million is never enough... no rock too big." It also details and describes the true realities of the underground drug scene in and around Detroit... with all its guts & glory and ins & outs... both good and bad... and it provides tips and tricks to help understand the nature of addiction and how best to recover. If you liked the movies "Scarface" and "Blow," you'll love this eBook: "The Cocaine Zone." Many people think that what the addict needs is willpower, but nothing could be further from the truth: When a person has already lost control over a drug or activity, attempts to control its use almost never work. Because the source of addiction isn't the drug or activity itself but a desire for a mood changer, successful recovery means ultimately changing the way we live, giving up the addictive life-style. Willpower's Not Enough will show you how to change your life-style and to recover from your addiction. Author: Arnold M. Washton Paperback: 288 pages Company: William Morrow Paperbacks (1990-09-26) (1990-09-26) ISBN: 0060919698 List Price: $14.99 Amazon Price: $7.49 Used Price: $4.24
The following day we arrived at the Warner Bros. lot withAngel and we heard the wrath. Angel said don't pull another stunt like that again. I'm quite positive Hawk called him a Puerto Rican Midget. We were all at the trailer early Tuesday morning when a Warner Bros page or (lot guy), rode up on his a bike. He came into the trailer and he said here you go Angel. He had a bindle of blow. I could not believe my eyes! You could actually get blow at Warner Bros, and have it delivered by a personal assistant. The guy, also had a brand new unopened cassette tape in his hands. He looked at Angel and said, “May I”? It was the brand new Motley Crue release, Girls, Girls, Girls and he threw it in Angel's 85 pound ghetto blaster then proceeded to crank it up to 11. 9:30 AM - Tuesday, Warner Bros Lot, Cocaine, Coffee & Crue. Now that's “Breakfast of the Champions” Later that day after partaking in some very good lines of studio-coke, we went back to the set to actually watch Angel do some work. Before we went over to the set, we stopped at craft services. I was looking around for something to eat, when I felt my drumsticks being lifted out of my back pocket. It was Tom Hanks. He played a set of triplets on everything that was round at the food table. He hit the licorice, the cookies, the soda cans, whatever he could, and then he stopped and handed them back to me. He played very well and I told him so. I said damn Tom, you can actually play! He said sure I can, you know what happens to frustrated musicians, right? I said, no, what? He said, they become actors. We were on the set with Angel for about 3 weeks, then it was back to the regular gig, flying around to different Comedy Store's every weekend. I met a lot of interesting people during the movie shoot. Cyndi Lauper, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Hanks, Sally Fields to name a few but the most intriguing person I met at the Warner Bros Lot, was the guy who rode that bike around selling coke. Go figure.
