Encyclopedia of Pollution is a new, two-volume color set designed to address all aspects of pollution and the global impact on the environment in a single source. Containing more than 300 entries and essays interspersed throughout, it uses the most current scientific data to explain the different types of pollutants including properties, production, uses, environmental release and fate, adverse health response to exposure, and environmental regulations on human exposure. It provides the scientific background on the water, soil, and air of environments where the pollutants are released. Coverage also includes pollution regulation, the function of federal regulatory agencies and environmental advocacy groups, and the technology and methods to reduce pollution and to remediate existing pollution problems. Numerous case studies explore the most infamous of pollution events such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill, the Gulf Storm oil well fires, the Chernobyl disaster, Hurricane Katrina, the World Trade Center disaster, and the Love Canal in New York, among many others including those that had great impact on legislation or that were used in popular media such as the films Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action. Interviewing children who may been sexually abused is a daunting task fraught with far-reaching consequences for the children, families, institutions, and professionals involved. With no room for error, forensic and clinical interviewers must navigate the complex and often contradictory evidence that informs their decision making. Here, Kathleen Coulborn Faller, a leading expert on child sexual abuse, critically analyzes the research on assessing child sexual abuse. Noting that issues such as memory and suggestibility, questioning techniques, the use of media, and false allegations remain hotly contested, chapters guide readers in applying available research to professional judgment while drawing also on best practice guidelines and conceptual, clinical, and consensus-based writings. The only up-to-date resource of its kind,Interviewing Children About Sexual Abuse covers the entire interview process, showing professionals how to structure, document, and follow up on children's responses in interviews; work with children who are very young, have special needs, or come from diverse backgrounds; use standardized tests and measures; formulate conclusions about sexual abuse; and defend those decisions in a courtroom or clinical setting. Mental health, forensic, and child welfare professionals will find in this volume a wealth of expert information that will guide them through the often murky, always emotional process of interviewing children about sexual abuse. As child sexual abuse investigation and intervention in the United States has evolved over the past decade, it has become clear that no single discipline or agency can meet the needs of abused children and their families. Coordinated investigative teams, involving an alliance between a wide range of professionals - such as criminal justice professionals, social workers, medical practitioners and mental health clinicians - are needed for fact-finding, child protection and criminal prosecution. This practical book focuses on how to design, develop, operate and maintain effective teams. It begins with examinations of how to build teams and the roles and responsibilities of the professionals involved. Investigative interviewing

"[A] concise and detailed description of a very complex issue...rich in detail and insight." "[A] 'must have' resource for practicing professionals and an invaluable teaching tool for social work students .This is precisely the book that mandated reporters seek to assist in the reporting process and understanding their legal obligations." In all states, social workers are required to report suspected child abuse and neglect, and face serious penalties if they fail to do so. But not all cases of abuse are obvious. Mandated reporters are thus confronted with a host of both legal and ethical quandaries when filing a report: What are the responsibilities of mandated reporters? What are appropriate grounds for reporting abuse? How and when should a report be made? Does reporting suspected abuse violate client confidentiality? What if my employer encourages me not to report my suspicions? Addressing these questions and more, this book provides clear definitions of different types of child abuse, including physical, sexual, and emotional, and delineates guidelines on how to identify risk factors and signs of child maltreatment. The authors also clarify difficult ethical issues, including client confidentiality and privileged communication, and present numerous case studies and theoretical vignettes culled from their own experiences as social workers. This guide will be the one resource mandated reporters and social work students cannot do without.
In the aftermath of four Yugoslav wars, ongoing efforts at reconstruction in South Eastern Europe have devoted relatively limited attention to dimensions of human security that enhance protections for the region's most vulnerable populations in their daily lives. It is in this context that South Eastern Europe, and especially the Western Balkan region, has emerged as a nexus point in human trafficking. Human Trafficking, Human Security, and the Balkans brings together leading scholars, NGO representatives, and government officials to analyze and offer solutions to this challenge. The contributors explore the economic dynamics of human trafficking in an era of globalization, which has greatly facilitated not only the flow of goods and services but also the trade in human beings. They also examine the effectiveness of international and transnational policies and practice, the impact of peacekeeping forces, and the emergence of national and regional action plans in the Western Balkans and, more broadly, in South Eastern Europe. Finally, they consider the nature and ramifications of the gap between human security rhetoric and institutional policy steps against human trafficking. Stephan watched in front of the school as the young mother kissed her four children goodbye. My mother was oblivious to his plotting and scheming to become a part of her existence. Every day he found ways to make contact with her. A seemingly accidental meeting got them on speaking terms and consistently crossing paths made it feel natural to stop and have a chat for a moment.Feeling confident that he had established a rapport with the young mother, he blatantly followed her home one day. Sophia, my mother noticed him, stopped and playfully teased him about following her. He continued to walk her home as they joked about him being a stalker. My name is Toni, and I was seven years old, the day my mother invited Stephan into our home. It was the beginning of my nightmare. Through my eyes I want to bring to your attention a man that watched, stalked and preyed on my family and many other families. It was his intentions all along to violate the sanctity of our family for his own self gratification. After you have read my story, you will grab your children and cover them with a blanket of protection because just when you thought he was a part of a childish fairytale, you find out the boogey man does exist……… Author: Phillis Forrest Kindle Edition: 124 pages Kindle eBook Company: Phillis T. If they are so well equipped, why are they among the rarest of animals and the most threatened by human activity? To answer these questions, Ron Hirschi and Thomas Mangelsen introduce young readers to some of the earth's most spectacular predators: cougar, polar bear, lion, cheetah, tiger, grizzly bear, and killer whale. They examine the animals' past and present, and speculate on their future. Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe onlineAs our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Internet safety expert Nancy Willard provides you with need-to-know information about those online dangers, and she gives you the practical parenting strategies necessary to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly. Parents protect younger children by keeping them in safe places, teaching them simple safety rules, and paying close attention. As children grow, we help them gain the knowledge, skills, and values to make good choices--choices that will keep them safe and show respect for the rights of others. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Willard shows you how those same strategies can be translated from the real world to the cyberworld, and that you don't have to learn advanced computer skills to put them into effect. As you work on these strategies with your child, you will also discover that remaining engaged with what your children are doing online is much more valuable than any blocking software you could buy. "Willard blends the perspectives of a wise parent and a serious scholar about issues related to Internet behavior and safety. . . . Pick up the book, open it to any random page, and you will find on that page or nearby a wealth of helpful advice and useful commentary on the cyberreality facing our children and on how to deal with any of the issues she's identified." --Dick Thornburgh, J.D., former U.S. Attorney General; chair, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Youth Pornography and the Internet "Simply put, this book is a must-read for anyone--parents, educators, law enforcement, and policymakers alike--concerned with the critical issue of children's internet safety and what to do about it." --Douglas Levin, senior director of education policy, Cable in the Classroom Author: Nancy E. Now, building on that success, here’s a guide to eco-friendly parenting that’s expertly organized and filled with practical advice, definitive explanations, and imaginative ideas.Addressing the key environmental issues faced by parents of young children today, this book takes a straightforward approach to such urgent concerns as lead-painted toys; the risks and benefits of vaccinations, antibiotics, and vitamins; the potential side effects of plastic bottles and containers; how to manage food allergies and avoid fat- and sugar-filled snacks; and much more. A trained scientist, seasoned writer, and mother of two small children, author Catherine Zandonella combines knowledge and experience as she helps parents guide youngsters through a society that doesn’t always make green lifestyle choices easy. Each year, nearly 1.3 million children are reported missing. Although the unforeseen absence of a child is always upsetting, fortunately most missing children are returned home in a short period of time. This fact, however, provides little consolation for the parents of children whose whereabouts and welfare remain unknown.Twelve years ago, When Your Child Is Missing: A Family Survival Guide was written by parents and family members who had experienced the loss of a child. The Guide provides helpful advice for parents whose children are missing and also offers encouragement and support. The increased pervasiveness of online media has led to the victimization of a greater number of children via the Internet. It is important for parents to be adequately informed about the dangers their children face online. Accordingly, the Family Survival Guide has been updated to include current information on new technologies, particularly those that play a role in facilitating Internet crimes against children. This book takes a detailed look at MacLaren Hall, Los Angeles' Child Protection institution, which was open from the 1940's until May 2003. Included are chapters about child protection history in America, Maclaren Hall history from the 1940's to 1970, and the author's first-hand account of her stay there, as an 8 year old child inside MacLaren Hall in 1969. Also included are letters sent to the author as a child inside MacLaren Hall, as well as documents from the state about records, illustrations by the author and never before printed photographs of a 1960's Mac Hall Christmas party. Letters from author's parents regarding MacLaren Hall dated 2011 are also included to illustrate the lasting effects child protection institutions can have upon families for generations. MacLaren Hall was open for 6 decades, from the 1940's until 2003. Approximately 4,000 children lived in MacLaren Hall annually in the 1960's. Millions of children have suffered through child protection services in the history of America, from the workhouses and Orphan Trains of the Industrial Revolution to modified jails such as MacLaren Hall in modern times. This issue affects huge segments of society yet it is a hidden topic, rarely spoken of. This is the first book specifically about MacLaren Hall ever published. Author Kirsten Anderberg received her M.A. degree in History from the CA State University at Northridge, with an emphasis on CA and institutional history. She earned her B.A. degree at the University of WA in Political Science. Her work on MacLaren Hall has been supported by the Historical Society of Southern CA and the author has interviewed and organized more survivors of MacLaren Hall than anyone prior in its 60 year history.Author: Kirsten Anderberg Paperback: 92 pages Company: CreateSpace (2011-09-06) ISBN: 1463633114 List Price: $24.99 Amazon Price: $24.99
Forensic mental health assessment (FMHA) has grown into a specialization informed by research and professional guidelines. This series presents up-to-date information on the most important and frequently conducted forms of FMHA. The 19 topical volumes address best approaches to practice for particular types of evaluation in the criminal, civil, and juvenile/family areas. Each volume contains a thorough discussion of the relevant legal and psychological concepts, followed by a step-by-step description of the assessment process from preparing for the evaluation to writing the report and testifying in court.Volumes include the following helpful features: - Boxes that zero in on important information for use in evaluations - Tips for best practice and cautions against common pitfalls - Highlighting of relevant case law and statutes - Separate list of assessment tools for easy reference - Helpful glossary of key terms for the particular topic In making recommendations for best practice, authors consider empirical support, legal relevance, and consistency with ethical and professional standards. These volumes offer invaluable guidance for anyone involved in conducting or using forensic evaluations. This book addresses evaluations for child protection, one of the most delicate legal arenas in which forensic mental examiners play a part. The evaluations are highly specialized, requiring child clinical specialization, a knowledge of the legal and social context, and a thorough understanding of the professional and ethical guidelines for child protection evaluations. This volume provides the foundation that any mental health professional needs when pursuing specialization in evaluating children and parents before the court in child abuse and neglect cases. There is widespread concern in society about the problems of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect of children, but little understanding of the way in which what we call "child abuse" has been defined and treated over time. Master Thesis from the year 2000 in the subject Social Pedagogy / Social Work, grade: -, Glasgow Caledonian University, language: English, abstract: In November 1999 the Sunday Mail ran a story Orkney in new kid-sex scandal. Within the article, the social workers at Orkney were accused of doing nothing because the mother thought that the Orkney inquiry in 1992 damaged them so much they were happier pretending this was not happening. Furthermore, an ‘unnamed insider' stated “it's true that sex abuse allegations are handled with kid gloves within the department. It's only natural after what happened here before.†The purpose of this study is to explore the recent history of child protection in Scotland and the impact of intra-familiar child abuse inquiries on today's child protection work. The main question hereby is: Are children more at risk? Crystallisation was used as a general research methodology to obtain a wide range of information and to increase the validity of results. The data was derived from social work sources â€" interviews with two senior social work managers of two local authorities in the West of Scotland as well as a child protection trainer and questionnaires presented to child protection trainers and 32 students of two West of Scotland cohorts currently undertaking a post-qualifying child protection programme. The study was carried out between February and April 2000 and examined the perceptions and attitudes of child protection workers and how recent inquiries into child abuse have influenced today's protection work and policy. It was found that there has been both a positive and a negative impact on child protection work. All agreed that the partnership approach with parents and children and the inter-agency approach are important for good practice within child protection work. However, most of the respondents felt also a negative impact of the inquiries not necessarily on practice but on the social work profession itself. Child abuse and neglect are intractable problems exacting a terrible toll on children and rending the very fabric of our society. What can be done to reduce the suffering? If there were simple solutions to abuse and neglect they would have been discovered long ago. There are no easy answers, but in this vivid history of child protection in America, John E.B. Myers introduces realistic policies that will reduce maltreatment and strengthen the system that protects our children. Before it is possible to design viable improvements in today's system, it is necessary to understand how it evolved. The sweeping, beautifully written account of child protection in America traces its growth from colonial days to the present--from the rise and gradual disappearance of orphanages, the growth of foster care, the birth of organized child protection in 1874, and the rise of private societies to prevent cruelty, to the twentieth-century transition to government-operated child protection. Myers goes on to describe the principal causes of child maltreatment, including intergenerational transmission of violence, poverty, substance abuse, cultural violence, excessive corporal punishment, sexual deviance, evolution, mental illness, and domestic violence. Once the causes of maltreatment are clear, it is possible to create solutions. Some of the proposals outlined have been in play for more than a century, while others are new. Policies to combat poverty, expand nurse home visiting programs, increase access to day care, strengthen a sense of community, outlaw corporal punishment, rethink our attitude toward alcohol, and lower the toxicity in popular culture are rooted in a deep understanding of the cycle of violence and challenge traditional ways of thinking. Since it will never be possible to prevent all maltreatment, it is critical to strengthen the existing child protection system. Attainable reforms such as dealing with the lingering effects of racism in the child welfare, reworking funding mechanisms, refocusing leadership, creating a less adversarial system, strengthening foster care, and reinventing the juvenile court point to flaws in our system but demonstrate that progress is possible. This provocative book will challenge all those concerned with children's welfare to move toward real solutions that will make life better for America's most vulnerable children. Author: John E. B. This book is the first detailed history of child protection and welfare social work practice in the Republic of Ireland, providing a comprehensive and in-depth account of the development of social work within the child protection and welfare system in the Republic of Ireland. Drawing on a broad range of archival sources, the book illuminates the complex and often contradictory nature of child welfare practices over the period 1862-1991. The archival data provided in the book should provide an excellent starting point for persons interested in furthering the study of the nature of child welfare and/or social work in the Republic of Ireland. The book applies a methodology of a history of the present in a rigorous manner, drawing from Foucault's conceptualizations of archaeology, genealogy, and discourse. The book attempts to deconstruct and reconstruct the theorization of social work in 'the social' (Foucault, 1977; Donzelot, 1980, Parton, 1991) within the context of Irish social work. It is likely that both the methodological and theoretical aspects of this book, applied in such a grounded way, will be of great interest to a broad audience of social scientists and historians.

A History of Child Protection in America is the first comprehensive history of American efforts to protect children from abuse and neglect. The book begins in colonial times and chronicles child protection into the twenty-first century. Among the important nineteenth century events detailed in these pages are the rise of orphanages for "dependent" children, the "orphan trains" operated by the New York Children's Aid Society, the birth of the juvenile court, the reforms of the Children's Progressive Era, and the dramatic rescue of Mary Ellen Wilson, which led to the creation of the world's first organization devoted entirely to child protection, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Twentieth century milestones include the gradual transition from private child protection societies to government operated child protection, the obscurity of child abuse from the 1920's to the 1960's, the "discovery" of child abuse in 1962, and the creation of the child protection system we know today.Author: John E. This article uses two case studies to show the need for reform of child protection services. In one case, the child died. In the other, a boy becomes a public menace under the eyes of child “protection.” These cases are part of a pattern of neglect by systems that are supposed to protect children. If the American public knew how many children receive the “care” that these two cases illustrate, things would change. Politicians might take action if the public demands it. A well-run child protection system will save US taxpayers billions a year, more than offsetting any money needed to pay for advanced training of social workers and to pay social workers well. `All readers will be drawn to the style of the book as well as its content. The structure will make sure that it is not just a "one-off", being read as part of a course of study, but a book which is used frequently as a source of reference' - Child Abuse Review `[Child Protection provides] a clear explanation of the Department of Health definitions of child abuse and suggests signs which may arouse suspicion. The exercises interspersed within the text would each provide opportunity for lively debate and indeed Beckett encourages this in his ensuing discussion' - Accident and Emergency Nursing Journal `This book is clearly written and would be a useful reference for professional wishing to gain information about protecting children from child abuse. The author makes extensive use of case examples to illustrate points and this adds to the clear style of the book' - Community Practitioner `Professionals who have regular contact with children (e.g., teachers, psychologists, or general practitioners) could benefit from the author's very practical approach to indentifying and responding to suspected child maltreatment. In addition to being a useful resouce in itself, this text could be used successfully in a classroom setting with social work students or as a professional development tool for new and experienced child-protection social workers' - Journal of Family Studies Child Protection provides a very readable introduction to child protection work. It is for social work students, experienced and non-experienced social workers and the whole range of professionals - nurses, police officers, teachers, doctors - who are following up concerns about the abuse and neglect of children. It is based on the author's 18 years of experience in practice as well as his current work as a social work teacher. The material is presented in a fresh and accessible way. Chris Beckett makes extensive use of case examples to illustrate points and encourage readers to test their own thinking. He provides clear introductions, summaries and conclusions and invites the reader to reflect on what is being discussed and to relate these points to specific situations that might be encountered in practice and everyday life. Part One outlines the job of a child protection social worker - what it entails and the demand made on social workers Part Two looks at the different ways in which children can be abused and neglected and considers the indicators and warning signs as well as the long-term consequences. Part Three considers the causes of abuse and neglect. What leads adults to mistreat their children or fail to provide the care and protection they need? Part Four explores some of the difficulties and dilemmas involved in child protection social work. This is an excellent, clear and inspiring book and is a must for anyone embarking on or already involved in child protection work.
The impact on children of domestic violence has received increasing attention, but awareness of the problem has not always translated into public action. This forward-thinking volume brings together leading mental health, legal, educational, and social services professionals from the U.S. and Canada to demonstrate how the problem of violence in the home can best be mitigated through community collaboration. The book provides an understanding of the effects of childhood exposure to domestic violence; considers the most promising assessment approaches; and examines specific interventions with victims and offenders, ranging from individual and group approaches to broader efforts involving schools, police, courts, and the media. Also addressed are the complexity of working with families from diverse cultural backgrounds and the often-ignored subject of how to enhance the roles of fathers in their children's lives. "This book is especially welcome because of the scholarship and thoughtfulness evident throughout."—Dr Peter Reder, Child Psychiatrist, London How do child protection professionals and courts make judgments on whether serious injuries to infants are due to abuse? If injuries are considered to be the result of abuse, in what circumstances can it be considered safe for the infant to return home? Child Protection Assessment Following Serious Injuries to Infants is concerned with helping child protection professionals and courts make the right decisions and avoid errors that can have disastrous consequences for children and families. Drawing upon the extensive clinical and research experience of the authors, this authoritative text:Reviews research on the causes of child abuse and problems in diagnosing abuse.Examines the views of parents who consider that they have been wrongly accused of child abuse.Draws specific attention to the need to assess potential for change in families and considers in detail how this can be achieved.Highlights skills issues that are necessary for undertaking appropriate assessments.Identifies key factors that are indicative of reunification in some cases, and factors that contraindicate reunification in others. With its evidence-based approach, this book will be a valuable resource for all child protection professionals. It will also be of use to health professionals, legal professionals, researchers, lecturers and students of social work.
Serious child protection failures haunt health and welfare agencies around the world.Based on interviews with protective workers and rigorous examination of their cases, this ground breaking book draws links between the traumatised and isolated child protection worker and the traumatised and isolated re-abused child. This book judiciously uses the words of the workers themselves to bring alive the stresses of life In the Firing Line. Case studies highlight the full extent of violence in many children's lives. The authors propose that, in serious cases of abuse, new approaches and understandings are required if children are to be protected from repeated abuse, long-term psychological injury and even death. * First book to clearly make the connection between violence against child protection workers and the impact on their ability to protect the child * Tackles the very important, but often neglected, topic of the power balance between clients and social workers * Presents a wealth of research findings and real-life examples from practice Author: Janet Stanley, Chris Goddard Paperback: 234 pages Company: Wiley (2002-03-20) ISBN: 0471998850 List Price: $64.95 Amazon Price: $44.94 Used Price: $60.54
CHAPTER ONE (excerpt) Crossroads It’s all over. The train wreck of my life has fi nally come to a stop. God knows it’s a miracle that I’m here. I yell out goodbye to my kids and to Mitch my defacto, pull the front door closed behind me and step onto the red brick porch of my rundown rented house out into the icy night. It was never supposed to be like this. It was supposed to be fun. I look towards the familiar shadowy street and contemplate how lamentable my life has become. I rub at the fresh scars across my wrists; refl ect on the emergency room, where I had been so many times before with the doctor pulling the thread through like a cook weaving up the arse of a stuffed corn beef roast. I hear his words telling me what a serious problem I have and that the next time I just might succeed. I wipe persistent tears from my face, it’s not just the pain from my wrists that I feel, God knows they hurt like anything, it’s just everything seems to hurt now. July winter winds blow purposefully through the open verandah and I am hungry to stave off its caustic cold. The darkness about matches the bleakness I feel and waves of nausea ebb and fl ow within me. These days terror has me wrapped in its grip like an ancient Egyptian mummy, only releasing its grip momentarily before wrapping me even tighter. My body trembles underneath my layers of winter clothing, including denim jacket and jeans. My hands shake terribly and my heart is racing a million to one amidst the guilt and fear that feels like it’s suffocating me. Through the grimy front windows of the house, the backdrop of television voices and my son’s laughter floats all about me. As I stand, jumping from one frozen foot to another, memories taunt me with their reminders of the life I am now trying to end. The screwing in back seats of cars and hotel toilets, the slime and the fi lth, being dumped at roadsides and stepping out of hotel rooms at dawn, sick, alone and hung-over. Tears spill once more down icy cheeks. What kind of person am l? What kind of mum? Strands of auburn hair lash across my face and I gaze towards the hazy whitish glow streaming out from the streetlight in front of the house. How long before my rescuers arrive? I cry and I pray. Will God listen? Is it too late? Can I even be helped? I just can’t take it any more. Is it possible to have something better than this crap? Something beyond mere survival? A job? Not feel so scared all the time? The pub and clubs with their poker machines, hazy smoke and beer stench is still up my nostrils. The clank of pool balls still resounds in my mind; the music of the jukebox, the bands, me doing disco on the floor, plastered and loving it. Peter, my ex husband complaining, “Why can’t you just stay at home and take better care of the kids? Mitch my defacto complaining, “God I hate it when you let yourself get so drunk. Why can’t you just stop?” All I feel is sick and scared. All I want is to be normal. Why am I so haunted? Something really dreadful, really disastrous is about to happen and no one will be able to help me. Thread by thread all the fun has just unravelled. When I made the call the call to AA two nights ago, I thought it would get better but it hasn’t. “How can we help you?” the stranger asked me. “I don’t know. I just need help,” I pleaded into the phone. “I can’t stop drinking. I can’t stand my life any more. I don’t want to die and I’m scared I’ll go mad.” The words vomited out, smothered in their own flood of hot tears. Someone would ring me and take me to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Please don’t let me down I had wanted to beg. Everything seemingly hung on someone coming. It was the only hope I had left. Finally, the glow of headlights and relief fl oods my being. The lights beam towards the chipped brick fence and a red Sega pulls into the curb. My heart is thumping even more. I pull my jacket tightly across my woollen jumper and mindfully make my way to the awaiting car ... Child protection is one of the most high profile and challenging areas of social work, as well as one where children’s lives and family life are seen to be at stake. Vital as child protection work is, this book argues that there is a pressing need for change in the understanding and consequent organization of child protection in many English speaking countries. The authors present compelling evidence from around the globe demonstrating that systems across the Western world are failing children, families and social workers. They then set out a radical plan for reform: Providing an overview of contemporary child protection policies and practices across the English speaking world Presenting a clear and innovative theoretical framework for understanding the problems in the child protection system Developing an alternative, ethical framework which locates child protection in the broader context of effective and comprehensive support for children, young people and families at the neighbourhood and community levelsGrounded in the recent and contemporary literature, research and scholarly inquiry, this book capitalises on the experiences and voices of children, young people, families and workers who are the most significant stakeholders in child protection. It will be an essential read for those who work, research, teach or study in the area. This paper synthesizes the findings of three Children's Bureau funded research grants on unsubstantiated child protective services (CPS) cases. It specifically addresses the case, decision-maker, organizational, and external factors that influence the decision to substantiate or unsubstantiate a CPS referral and how that decision impacts outcomes for children. Researchers' suggestions for practical implications and future research also are presented.Author: Children's Bureau (DHHS) Kindle Edition: 21 pages Kindle eBook Company: (2011-06-07) (2011-06-07) List Price: $1.99 Amazon Price:
Proving Innocence chronicles thirteen months of agony and frustration suffered by the innocent Bonilla and Frontiera families as a result of Children's Protective Services removal of young James Bonilla from his parents. Most people are not prepared to navigate the maze of sometimes senseless procedures of a government agency that has too much power. The Frontiera and Bonilla story and reports of several other cases across the country should be a wake-up call to a public unaware of how the state agencies charged with protecting the nation's children are failing. Interviews with lawyers, caseworkers, and others who work within the system, point out specific steps that should be taken to improve how these agencies work. The author issues a call to action from the public to charge all levels of government to make necessary changes in these agencies. They must protect children from abuse and neglect without persecuting innocent families.Author: Deborah K. The war against child abuse has become a war against children. Every year, hundreds of children die, thousands more are forced to live with strangers, and countless American families are torn apart. This is called a 'child-protection system'. While the problem of child abuse is serious and real, journalist Richard Wexler charges that our solutions to the problem have actually made it worse - in fact, hurting the very children that they were intended to help. Wexler reinforces his arguments with horrifying descriptions of children summarily removed from their homes, of families shattered because of false reports, and of children whose parents are guilty of nothing more than poverty being thrust into the maelstrom of the chaotic foster-care program. He writes of severely abused children - those needing the most help - whose cases are ignored because the system diverts scarce resources to trivial or unfounded cases, and who are re-injured, sometimes fatally after their plight has been called to the attention of authorities. "Wounded Innocents" illustrates how well-meaning efforts to help children have gone terribly wrong and how the current child-protection system desperately needs to be replaced with one that offers real help and real hope to abused and neglected children.Author: Richard Wexler Paperback: 429 pages Company: Prometheus Books (1995-02) ISBN: 0879759364 List Price: $23.98 Amazon Price: $11.25 Used Price: $5.38

"[O]ffers creative ways to build alliances with families…using language and motivational interviewing to help parents focus on problem-solving….a valuable resource." --Virginia Child Protection Newsletter How does one change the attitudes and practices of child protective services (CPS)—a statewide bureaucracy often overwhelmed and understaffed? First, take an outsider to the system, Insoo Kim Berg, who has a vision and a solution-focused model. Add an insider, Susan Kelly, who understands the system. Spend many hours with CPS workers in the field, learning from them and helping them make the shift from a deficit perspective to a collaborative model that emphasizes strengths and solutions. Envision and implement change throughout the system. Celebrate small successes on the way to building family self-sufficiency and integrity. This recipe for reforming child protective services is being followed in many public child welfare agencies, with growing success. In Building Solutions the authors explain how to conceptualize, implement, and sustain this hopeful and positive frame in a daily practice for dedicated frontline workers as well as for those in supervision, management, and administration. The book has two parts. In the first, the authors put child protective services in context, introducing the system and their new approach, giving a brief history of child protection in the United States, and setting the stage for change. In the second part, the authors walk readers through the nuts and bolts of implementation, from the first phone call to case closure—including discussions about placing a child out of the home. Berg and Kelly also discuss supervision, consultation, and ongoing training, as well as their vision of the future of CPS. This book is not a manual; it is a challenge to step out of the traditional CPS "box" and think differently—to create client-driven services that make sense. The authors challenge CPS administrators, supervisors, and workers to begin conversations about how the system can be more helpful and respectful to the families so that the parents can get what they need to care for their children. Building Solutions should have a place on the desk of everyone involved in child protective services. Author: Insoo Kim Berg, Susan Kelly Hardcover: 240 pages Company: W. W. Whether you've had prior experience with Child Protective Services, or are going through a custody battle where you know they are likely to become involved, this E-book is for you. Based on true facts and my own personal experiences, as my father would say, "Forewarned is forearmed!" When you read this article, you to will wonder if this department's name, Child Protective Services, and our tax dollars are really doing what the name implies, or is this merely a governmental department trying to grossly inflate its fiscal budget each year at the emotional cost to our kids?Author: Klacey J Smith Kindle Edition: 6 pages Kindle eBook Company: Klacey J.
