Two key challenges face mental health practitioners: making the correct psychiatric diagnosis and choosing the most appropriate treatment option. This book aims to help with both.Clinical Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders - Second Edition combines clinically-relevant information about each of theDSM-IV-TR diagnoses with clear, detailed information on treatment options, giving full clinical management advice. Once again, the editors, both leading psychiatrists, have condensed the chapters on Disorders from Tasman et al’s acclaimed two volume textbook of Psychiatry (now in its Third Edition), retaining only the content they deem particularly relevant to the clinician for ease of use. Each disorder is discussed under the headings of Diagnosis (including Assessment Issues, Comorbidity, Course, and Differential Diagnosis, giving diagnostic decision trees where relevant) and Treatment (listing all therapeutic options, giving practical advice for patient management, summarising treatment specifics with tables and treatment flowcharts). The original edition established itself as the first point of reference for any clinician or mental health practitioner needing expert advice on therapeutic options for any psychiatric disorder. This edition features an additional chapter on the psychiatric interview and assessment of mental status to increase its utility. It echoes the progress in psychiatry regarding the establishment of an evidenced-based model of taxonomy, diagnosis, etiology, and treatment. Indeed, from a psychologist's perspective, the equal consideration provided to empirically supported psychosocial treatments versus somatic treatment is a significant development in the field of psychiatry. Paul Wender began his career treating children with ADHD 37 years ago and has treated adults with the disorder for almost 30 years. His exhaustive research and insight gained from clinical practice led to the first book about ADHD in children (Minimal Brain Dysfunction in Children, 1971). Continuing research revealed that in many instances ADHD persisted into adult life, and that adult ADHD included symptoms that were not present in childhood. These findings resulted in his 1995 book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults. He also authored the first book for the parents of children with ADHD, The Hyperactive Child in 1974. Now, in this revised and updated edition of ADHD he presents the definitive resource on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In his discussion of ADHD treatments, Wender stresses that drug therapy remains the most effective in treating the disorder. He adds, however, that psychological techniques, when combined with medication, can produce further improvement. Most important, Wender offers practical--and extensive--instructions on how parents of an ADHD sufferer can best help their child. Throughout, Wender supplies extensive case histories of children and adolescents with ADHD, as well as accounts of the experience of ADHD in adults as perceived by both patients and their families. In addition, the book contains valuable information on where to seek help, as well as on the kinds of diagnostic tests currently available. Finally, in an appendix to the volume, the author includes instructions on how adults can self-screen for the disorder. Now a classic work, ADHD grants parents and adults whose lives have been touched by this disorder an indispensable source of help, hope, and understanding. Author: Paul H. Can Bipolar Disorder Be Defeated? Why isn't there a concentrated effort to fight for a cure? What are the best strategies to be successful in work and school? What is bipolar disorder? "The Unauthorized Guide to Bipolar Disorder" takes on these questions and many more with results that will give you a new perspective on this dreaded disorder. It is time for people to stop accepting that there is no cure for bipolar disorder and to start taking it head on. This ground breaking book helps you to overcome bipolar disorder with strategies that can reduce symptoms that you won't find anywhere else. This book was not written by a mental health professional and some of my advice is 180 degrees opposite of conventional advice. Nobody who is following conventional advice is beating bipolar disorder. They may have some success against symptoms but in the end most conventional and alternative methods are not going to bring much relief of symptoms or may even bring about new problems like weight gain and a variety of illnesses. These methods are ineffectual because they don’t go to the root causes of bipolar disorder. Today most effort on behalf of people with bipolar disorder is focused on treatment. To me treatment is unacceptable in today’s day and age. Treating bipolar disorder is not defeating it. I can’t guarantee that you can beat bipolar disorder but I feel it’s possible for most if not all people with bipolar disorder to defeat it. I feel confident in saying this because I have made great progress in my personal fight against bipolar disorder and I know others who have made progress as well. If you want to know what someone who is winning his fight against bipolar disorder is doing then “The Unauthorized Guide to Bipolar Disorder” is the book for you. Emerging conceptualizations of major emotional disorders emphasize their commonalities rather than their differences, including considerable overlap in disorder phenomenology, a common set of vulnerabilities to development of emotional disorders, and generalization of treatment response across disorders. Current research lends support for a unified transdiagnostic approach to treatment of these disorders that considers these commonalities and is applicable to a range of emotional disorders. Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, part of the TreatmentsThatWork series of therapist manuals and patient workbooks, is a radical departure from disorder-specific treatments of various emotional disorders, and is designed to be applicable to all anxiety and unipolar mood disorders, as well as other disorders with strong emotional components, such as many somatoform and dissociative disorders. The Unified Protocol (UP) capitalizes on the contributions made by cognitive-behavioral theorists by distilling and incorporating the common principles of CBT present in all evidenced based protocols for specific emotional disorders, as well as drawing on the field of emotion science for insights into deficits in emotion regulation. The UP contains seven modules and focuses on four core strategies: becoming mindfully aware of emotional experience; reappraising rigid emotion laden attributions; identifying and preventing behavioral and emotional avoidance; and facilatating exposure to both interoceptive and situational cues associated with emotional experiences. Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders will be an essential resource for all therapists and psychiatrists who implement CBT strategies, as well as any clinician treating anxiety and depressive disorders.
