Most people have heard of bipolar disorder, a mental health condition that is marked by manic episodes and periods of intense depression. Fortunately, there are proven-effective treatments that can help you find a sense of calm and peace of mind.

Written by an extremely accomplished team of bipolar experts, The Bipolar II Disorder Workbook is designed to help you manage the recurring depression, hypomania, and anxiety that can arise as a result of your condition. The convenient workbook format combines evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and other mindfulness-based exercises to help you manage your emotions, track your progress, and ultimately live a happy and more productive life.

This is the first self-help workbook available specifically for individuals diagnosed with bipolar II disorder.

Loving Someone with Bipolar DisorderJulie Fast and John Preston have written a ground breaking book for couples who want to prevent manic depressive disorder from hijacking their relationship. Fast, a health writer diagnosed with bipolar illness and clinical psychologist Preston are ideal companions. Their innovative ideas will be welcomed by exhausted partners of "bipolar individuals"--whose illness can cause them to alternate between manic and depressed behavior. Once medication has been prescribed, the key is studying the specific ways your partner is effected. This allows couples to develop pro-active strategies for treating and stabilizing mood swings and symptoms, before they develop into full-blown crises. The techniques emphasize prevention, rather than putting out fires. These include understanding the difference between the person and the disease (know when "the bipolar disorder is talking") listing your partner's specific symptoms, identifying the triggers that lead to these symptoms and transforming the "bipolar conversation" The goal of all the tools is to pinpoint early warning signs of a manic or depressive episode and be prepared with a holistic treatment plan. Other segments of the book deal with the work (checkered resumes) and financial problems (spending sprees) created by this illness. The author's ideas are engaging, compassionate and realistic--an oasis of relief and hope. --Barbara Mackoff

Bipolar Disorder: Understanding Symptoms Mood Swings & Treatment (mental illness, mental health, mentally ill)Bipolar DisorderUnderstanding Symptoms & Mood Swings & Treatment

You are about to discover proven steps and strategies on how to properly support and care for a loved one with bipolar disorder. More often than not, people whose loved one has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder wonder what to expect and how they should show their love and support the best way they can. It can be very difficult for those who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder to accept their condition. In the same way, it can also be overwhelming and at the same time frightening for the family and friends of people with bipolar disorder, especially if they do not know the appropriate ways of supporting and dealing with the condition.

Bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic depression, is a type of mental or psychiatric disorder that is marked by extreme mood swings. Although there have been continuous research and studies on the condition, its ultimate cause remains unknown. On the other hand, some of the presumed contributors to bipolar disorder include brain chemistry, genetics and life events.

All people experience various events in their daily lives; however, people who are suffering due to bipolar disorder experience more persistent episodes of life’s “ups and downs,” that affect their ability to function as an individual. Bipolar disorder can affect one’s thoughts, moods and behavior.

In recent studies, mental health experts estimate that over 2 million adults are afflicted with bipolar disorder. Thus, if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with this condition, the most important step to discard uncertainty is education. Educating yourself about bipolar disorder can help you deal with a loved one who has been inflicted with this unfortunate condition.

You should know that an individual who is suffering from bipolar disorder has his/her own difficulties to deal with; however, there are also challenges when caring for someone who is bipolar. Regardless whether you live together with some one who is bipolar or not, several steps need to be taken in order to deal with bipolar appropriately.

Madness: A Bipolar Life
An astonishing dispatch from inside the belly of bipolar disorder, reflecting major new insights

When Marya Hornbacher published her first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, she did not yet have the piece of shattering knowledge that would finally make sense of the chaos of her life. At age twenty-four, Hornbacher was diagnosed with Type I rapid-cycle bipolar, the most severe form of bipolar disorder.

In Madness, in her trademark wry and utterly self-revealing voice, Hornbacher tells her new story. Through scenes of astonishing visceral and emotional power, she takes us inside her own desperate attempts to counteract violently careening mood swings by self-starvation, substance abuse, numbing sex, and self-mutilation. How Hornbacher fights her way up from a madness that all but destroys her, and what it is like to live in a difficult and sometimes beautiful life and marriage -- where bipolar always beckons -- is at the center of this brave and heart-stopping memoir.

Madness delivers the revelation that Hornbacher is not alone: millions of people in America today are struggling with a variety of disorders that may disguise their bipolar disease. And Hornbacher's fiercely self-aware portrait of her own bipolar as early as age four will powerfully change, too, the current debate on whether bipolar in children actually exists.

Ten years after Kay Redfield Jamison's An Unquiet Mind, this storm of a memoir will revolutionize our understanding of bipolar disorder.

Flight from Darkness: An Exploration into Bipolar DisorderPercy Paul's mind launched him on a meteoric rise from a broken childhood to the highest corridors of academia. But frequently his mind betrays him, plunging him from the peaks of genius into a darkness that threatens to overwhelm his exceptional promise.

Percy began his journey in the least likely of places-in a remote Dene community in Northern Saskatchewan, a place where far too often alcohol and violence were close at hand. Despite these circumstances, he excelled in school and sports, eventually proving himself a world-class distance runner and gold medallist.

Within a few short years, Percy found himself at Princeton, working alongside one of the world's leading authorities on string theory, black holes and quantum field theory.

But all this changed when he turned 28. Percy became an alcoholic in an effort to cope with his increasingly extreme mood swings. After a failed suicide attempt, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Those afflicted with this life-long disorder suffer flights of mania followed by periods of clinical depression, where many try suicide-and, tragically, all too many succeed.

In the film, Percy's ex-wife, Michelle, serves as a witness to the destructive nature of bipolar disorder. She re-counts Percy's dramatic change from "a great husband and father" to an "alternately depressed, manic and sometimes verbally abusive alcoholic."

While there is no cure for bipolar disorder, medication can help minimize some of its debilitating effects. But for Percy, the side effects of the medication frequently outweigh the benefits. Yes, they do calm his mania but they also leave him feeling like a zombie. The creative thought processes that allow him to do his work feel closed when he takes his pills. This is the reason why some consider bipolar disorder to be both a gift and a curse.

Flight from Darkness focuses on the life of Percy Paul-from his dazzling rise and fall as a brilliant mathematician to his continuing struggle to prevail over his illness and realize his full potential.

OC87:The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger's Movie - 2 DVD Set (Amazon Exclusive)Can you make a movie while having mental illness? Bud Clayman is doing it.

Will making a documentary about your mental illness change your life? Maybe.

Mental illness interrupted his dream of a filmmaking career. Thirty years later, he's making the movie of his life. Bud Clayman is one of films' most unlikely heroes. This is a personal story with universal relevance—a wildly original documentary of pain and vulnerability, empowerment, and Bud's quest for belonging.

Throughout his youth, Bud's future was filmmaking. After college in Philadelphia, he headed to Hollywood in search of a break. Instead, he had a breakdown. As mental illness struck, it stuck. When distress and isolation set in, the diagnoses followed. For eight years, Bud lived in a therapeutic community.

Without waiting for his illness to vanish, Bud has reclaimed his quest as a filmmaker. As his camera chronicles the ups and downs of recovery, we also see the experience of what he calls "the fight inside my head." Behind the lens, a parallel journey unfolds as Bud the Director grapples with the challenges of making an incisive, highly personal documentary—a movie that he believes will transform his life.

When problems hit the fan, Bud sometimes feels defeated. More often, he draws strength and skills from therapy, humor, and relationships. Even so, he feels different, and the stigma of mental illness is fierce.

Meanwhile, directing this documentary film stretches Bud in ways that ultimately recast his quest. From the shadows of suffering, a portrait of imperfect courage emerges—a testament to acceptance, change, and hope.

The LA Times hailed OC87 as "uniquely inspiring." The New York Times called it "moving, penetrating" and The New York Post said, "it's easy to cheer his ultimate triumph."

This 2 DVD collector's edition includes over 45 minutes of additional footage and the documentary is closed captioned.

Welcome to the Jungle: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Bipolar but Were Too Freaked Out to Ask
Going bravely where no other bipolar book has gone before, here Hilary Smith offers devastatingly on-target, honest--and riotously funny--insights into living with bipolar and answers some of the hardest questions facing her fellow bipolaristas:  Can anything ever be the same again?  Am I still me if I take mind-altering meds? Can other people tell I have bipolar?  Can I get this thing removed?

Bipolar is one of the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric conditions among teens and twenty-somethings--yet there are very few books out there written specifically for teens and twenty-somethings experiencing mental illness for the first time.

Welcome to the Jungle (Conari Press, May 2010) fills that gap with its upfront, empowering approach to the challenges of being diagnosed with bipolar. Both humorous and immensely honest, it offers a true "in the trenches" perspective readers will trust.

With chapters ranging from What Just Happened?: Life Beyond The Diagnosis to Here Be Downers: Drugs, Booze, and Suicide to Hippy Shit That Actually Works: Herbs, Wilderness Time, and Other Ways to Help Keep Your Shit Together to Hell is Finding Good Insurance: How to Get Your Ass Covered in Troubled Times, Smith brings bipolar self help to the street level.

Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (2nd Edition)

Bipolar disorder can be devastating. It can disrupt relationships and careers, it can wreak havoc on family life, and, when not properly treated, it can be fatal. Since 1999 this compassionate and comprehensive guide has helped tens of thousands of people cope with this complex disease. This, the second edition of Bipolar Disorder, is thoroughly updated and discusses promising new options for diagnosis and treatment along with new information on the disease's genetic components.

Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose. Dr. Mondimore explains how symptoms fluctuate in persons with seasonal affective disorder, how they can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of attention deficit–hyperactivity disorder in children, and how they may be made worse by alcohol or drug addiction.

The disease can also be difficult to treat. Dr. Mondimore gives advice about how to pick a psychiatrist and cope with the stigma of psychiatric diagnosis. He provides extensive information on treatment options, including the advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of various drug therapies.

He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, planning for emergencies, and giving yourself permission to seek help.

Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

Compassionate and comprehensive, Dr. Francis Mondimore's pathbreaking guide has helped thousands of people and their loved ones cope with bipolar disorder. Now in its third edition, Bipolar Disorder has been thoroughly updated with new information about the causes of the disorder, tools for diagnosis, and advances in treatment. Dr. Mondimore surveys new medications for treating bipolar disorder, including asenapine, iloperidone, paliperidone, lurasidone, and oxcarbazepine, exploring the benefits and potential side effects of each. He also reviews the scientific studies that back up claims for recommended nutritional supplements, such as omega-3s and NAC—and tells you which ones to leave on the shelf.

Dr. Mondimore discusses recent changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and reviews the exciting new findings of the largest multicenter evaluation of best-treatment practices for bipolar disorder ever carried out, the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD). He describes how these findings, gleaned from the treatment experiences of thousands of patients, will improve treatment decisions.

With insight and sensitivity, Dr. Mondimore makes complex medical concepts easy to understand and describes what it is like for people to live with bipolar disorder. He recommends changes to daily routines and lifestyle that will improve the quality of life for patients and offers expert advice on planning for emergencies and identifying when and how to seek help. Throughout the book, Dr. Mondimore focuses on the importance of building a support system for everyone affected by this unpredictable illness.

An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and MadnessIn Touched with Fire, Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatrist, turned a mirror on the creativity so often associated with mental illness. In this book she turns that mirror on herself. With breathtaking honesty she tells of her own manic depression, the bitter costs of her illness, and its paradoxical benefits: "There is a particular kind of pain, elation, loneliness and terror involved in this kind of madness.... It will never end, for madness carves its own reality." This is one of the best scientific autobiographies ever written, a combination of clarity, truth, and insight into human character. "We are all, as Byron put it, differently organized," Jamison writes. "We each move within the restraints of our temperament and live up only partially to its possibilities." Jamison's ability to live fully within her limitations is an inspiration to her fellow mortals, whatever our particular burdens may be. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Bipolar: The Bipolar Disorder Revealed! The Ultimate Help Book (Chemical Imbalances, Mood Swings, Mental Health) (Bipolar, Chemical Imbalances, Mood Swings, Mental Health)The Bipolar Disorder **REVEALED!**

Read on your PC, Mac, Smartphone, Tablet, or Kindle device.

If you are looking to become well-educated on the bipolar disorder then you are in the right place!

People with psychological disorders are often misunderstood by society at large. One of these disorders is Bipolar disorder, also known as Manic-Depression.

Bipolar patients usually experience severe mood swings and disruptions which cause them to switch between mania or extreme happiness and depressive episodes, sometimes even to the point of suicidal instances. People who suffer from this mood disorder may seem crazy to “normal” people because their actions vary depending on their moods.

An estimated 10 million Americans can be considered bipolar while around 2.4 percent of the global population is afflicted with this condition, experts say. Bipolar disorder is not a congenital condition, but often develops when a person is between 15 and 25 years old.

Unlike in many psychiatric disorders, there are bigger chances of controlling and managing manic depression through psychotherapy and medication. With the help of their friends and family, bipolar patients can live normally and minimize their mood swing attacks.

This book intends to help people with bipolar disorder understand their condition better and disprove the notion that theirs are hopeless cases. It should be clear to everyone that manic depression CAN be cured, and that treatment, recovery, and management of this disease can be carried out.

This book is divided into six chapters, all of which will focus on different aspects of Bipolar disorder including its symptoms and main causes. Another chapter aims to clarify fact and fiction when it comes to this condition, while another chapter will focus on the different psychotherapy techniques and medications often prescribed to make manic depressive episodes more manageable.

Bipolar Lies: How to Deal With Bipolar Lies and Manipulation In Bipolar DisorderMany supporters of a loved one with bipolar disorder have expressed the concern that their loved one is lying to them. The pattern of lying in bipolar disorder is a common occurrence; however, that does not necessarily make it acceptable. This guide explores what lying is, whether it is on purpose or is part of the bipolar disorder itself, what the consequences can be, and many other topics that will help you to understand why your loved one may lie to you. In addition, it offers suggestions on ways to deal with this phenomenon.

One of the main things this guide tells you is that, if your loved one is lying to you (for whatever reason, whether on purpose or because of their bipolar disorder), you are not alone. Many other supporters have gone through or are going through the same thing. Whatever the case, lying is definitely a problem in the case of bipolar disorder.

This guide offers you explanations for your loved one's lying, as well as concrete, easy-to-understand ways for you to cope with it. It is written under the assumption that you are facing this problem. It is written to inform you and, thus, being informed, will make dealing with your loved one's lying more effective.

It includes such topics as:

• What is Lying
• Motivations for Lying
• How People with Bipolar Disorder Lie
• How to Tell if Your Loved One is Lying to You
• How to Deal with and Protect Yourself from the Lies
• Dealing with Lies as They are Happening

Bipolar Disorder: The Secret (True Stories of Life in a Psychiatric Hospital Book 1)The most frequent questions I get from people, when they hear I am a psychology instructor or clinical therapist, concerns Bipolar Disorder. Recent studies indicate that Bipolar Disorder is one of the leading disabilities in the world. It seems everyone knows someone affected by this illness. A few years ago, not many people were talking about this disease, possibly due to the lack of information regarding this disorder. As a result of the stigma of having a “mental problem,” most individuals suffering from Bipolar Disorder do not tell their family, friends, or co-workers. It is time to let the secret. I will do this through the true stories and experiences of mine at the psychiatric hospital where I worked for several years.

Manic-Depressive Illness: Bipolar Disorders and Recurrent Depression, 2nd EditionThe revolution in psychiatry that began in earnest in the 1960s led to dramatic advances in the understanding and treatment of manic-depressive illness. Hailed as the most outstanding book in the biomedical sciences when it was originally published in 1990, Manic-Depressive Illness was the first to survey this massive body of evidence comprehensively and to assess its meaning for both clinician and scientist. It also vividly portrayed the experience of manic-depressive illness from the perspective of patients, their doctors, and researchers. Encompassing an understanding about the illness as Kraeplin conceived of it- about its cyclical course and about the essential unity of its bipolar and recurrent unipolar forms- the book has become the definitive work on the topic, revered by both specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Now, in this magnificent second edition, Drs. Frederick Goodwin and Kay Redfield Jamison bring their unique contribution to mental health science into the 21st century. In collaboration with a team of other leading scientists, a collaboration designed to preserve the unified voice of the two authors, they exhaustively review the biological and genetic literature that has dominated the field in recent years and incorporate cutting-edge research conducted since publication of the first edition. They also update their surveys of psychological and epidemiological evidence, as well as that pertaining to diagnostic issues, course, and outcome, and they offer practical guidelines for differential diagnosis and clinical management. The medical treatment of manic and depressive episodes is described, strategies for preventing future episodes are given in detail, and psychotherapeutic issues common in this illness are considered. Special emphasis is given to fostering compliance with medication regimens and treating patients who abuse drugs and alcohol or who pose a risk of suicide. This book, unique in the way that it retains the distinct perspective of its authors while assuring the maximum in-depth coverage of a vastly expanded base of scientific knowledge, will be a valuable and necessary addition to the libraries of psychiatrists and other physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, and the patients and families who live with manic-depressive illness.

Bipolar Happens! 35 Tips and Tricks to Manage Bipolar DisorderBipolar Happens! provides 35 inspirational tips for those with bipolar disorder as well as invaluable information for those who care about a person with the illness. Written with a very funny and riveting honesty as only a person with the illness can do, Bipolar Happens! offers practical knowledge and deep insights into what it is like to live with bipolar disorder.

Compelling, insightful and never afraid to tell the truth , many of Julie’s readers credit this book as being their personal catalyst for change. “When I read this book I actually felt that someone really understood me, and it made me feel hope for the first time since my diagnosis. I didn’t know what it meant to be psychotic or why I got overwhelmed a lot in crowds. I learned how to manage mania much better than in the past. And now I can see that I’m not the only one who wakes up with depression. Julie is funny and so willing to say what many people won’t. This book talks about the stuff we go through that never gets put into books. The book is like reading fables. It’s not overwhelming, but you really learn a lot.”

Bipolar - Life Between Two ExtremesMiami Airport, 7th December 2005: A passenger claims there is a bomb on board. When he ignores the orders of two sky marshals, they shoot him down. It turns out that the man did not have a bomb, but was suffering from bipolar disease.
Ernst Juenger visits people afflicted with the disorder, who allow him to gain insights into their disease:

- Marylou Selo, a Swiss-American. The film accompanies the professional to the scenes where her illness manifested itself.
- Kay Redfield Jamison. The American Professor of Psychology is bipolar herself. "Pain and suffering is extraordinary and not fathomable to anyone who hasn't been there." A focus of her research is the frequently found correlation between creative talent and bipolar disorder.
- Jules Angst, Psychiatrist from Zurich. What interests him are the grey zones between health and disease.
- The actress Margot Kidder. She says it's not enough to go to a psychiatrist and hope to mood swings will stop. Everyone needs to find his or her own strategy.

Bipolar disorder reveals extreme facets of human existence, from delusions of artistic grandeur to disruptive and destructive hyperactivity to the deepest depths of despair and suicide.

Patients should not rely solely on the medical treatment available, but should educate themselves to be able to come up with their own approach to coping with the disorder.

Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a treatable condition marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behavior. It is called bipolar disorder because a person's mood can alternate between the "poles" of mania (high, elevated mood) and depression (low, depressed mood). These changes in mood ("mood swings") can last for hours, days, weeks or even months. There are two main types of bipolar disorder: people experiencing Bipolar I may have more frequent episodes of mania; whilst those with Bipolar II experience more frequent episodes of depression.

This 'Speaking from Experience' program offers first-hand accounts from people living with Bipolar disorder. They discuss the ways it has impacted their lives and how they manage the condition. It was produced in partnership with the Mental Health Association of San Francisco.

Bipolar Disorder: Recognition and Management Across the Life Span - A Video SymposiumBipolar Disorder is the sixth leading cause of disability in the United States and asserts broad negative effects on the patient's psychological and psychosocial functioning. Variations in its presentation at different times in the life cycle make Bipolar Disorder a difficult condition to recognize and, therefore, a challenge to treat. In particular the co-occurrence of mania and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children is difficult to interpret clinically. In this program, the first randomized, controlled trial using an adjunctive atypical antipsychotic in the treatment of adolescent mania will be described. Also includes a syllabus and course guide.
