Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.Author: Peter Deadman, Mazin Al-Khafaji, Kevin Baker Hardcover: 670 pages Company: Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications (2007-06-25) ISBN: 0951054651 List Price: $150.00 Amazon Price: $130.50 Used Price: $130.00
The authors of this book have developed a treatment protocol which they term the Integrative Neuromuscular Acupoint System, a synthesis of biomedicine and traditional acupuncture that uses biomedical terminology and concepts to interpret the basic mechanisms and clinical procedures of acupuncture, while retaining the emphasis on whole-person therapy and "promoting health while treating the disease," cornerstones of TCM. The authors maintain that the integration of acupuncture into mainstream medicine cannot happen without biomedicalization. Many readers, in particular Western healthcare professionals, will find this system an effective protocol for treating neuromuscular pain. Contents include acupoint neuroanatomy, pathophysiology, neural bases, and peripheral mechanisms; an integrative neuromuscular acupoint system for evaluation and treatment; protocols for back pain, upper limb pain, lower limb pain, and systemic pain; and therapy for non-pain symptoms, sports medicine, and therapy using electroacupuncture analgesia and injection therapy. 31 case studies are included.Author: Yun-tao Ma, Mila Ma, Zang Hee Cho Paperback: 266 pages Company: Churchill Livingstone / Elsevier (2004-09-13) ISBN: 0443066590 List Price: $70.95 Amazon Price: $58.45 Used Price: $57.95
The meridian test (or M-test) is a powerful assessment, treatment, and self-care system that can be used to improve athletic performance and physical fitness. It simplifies the assessment of strain and injury so that even nonacupuncturists and athletes can learn to apply massage and stretching more effectively. The M-Test is one of the most popular methods of sports acupuncture in Japan. Developed by Mukaino Yoshito, M.D., of the Sports and Health Science Department at Fukuoka University, the M-Test is based on his extensive experience in physical education and sports medicine. The M-Test uses the meridian system of acupuncture to analyze the movements of multiple joints and muscles in a holistic way. The most suitable meridians for treatment are identified by evaluating a sequence of movements. Flexibility and ease of movement in relation to the meridians are assessed to identify the areas and muscles that need treatment. Based on the M-Test results, the synergistic action of the joints and muscles involved in the movements can be facilitated with acupuncture, massage, or stretching. For the acupuncturist, the M-Test provides another powerful assessment tool for the treatment of pain and compromised movement. This system is compatible with the traditional understanding of the meridians, but takes it a step further to clarify the relationship between the meridians and movement. Practitioners can render treatment with a better understanding of this relationship and identify the most effective points for treating pain and improving movement. The M-Test can also be used to evaluate the results of treatment or the stretching regimen so that a better strategy can be formulated if the results are unsatisfactory. Athletes can learn to perform M-Test movements before or even during competition to identify and correct abnormalities to improve their performance and prevent injuries.Author: Mukaino Yoshito, M.D. Paperback: 213 pages Company: Eastland Press (2008-11-15) ISBN: 0939616661 List Price: $39.95 Amazon Price: $39.90 Used Price: $71.14
