Acupuncture is used for a wide variety of medical conditions, but in the United States it’s accepted by conventional doctors if at all solely for the treatment of pain.

Many chronic pain patients seem to be helped by acupuncture. This is fortunate, since several common prescription and nonprescription painkillers aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and indomethacin, for example can cause liver and kidney problems, ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.

For kidney-stone pain, acupuncture was found to be as effective as drug treatment. And almost half the subjects receiving drugs had side effects, while no one receiving acupuncture did.

Still, it’s curious that the studies aren’t more compelling-especially since acupuncture is more accepted in this country, and more likely to be covered by insurance, when used to treat pain than when used for other conditions. Physicians who pooh-pooh the idea of using acupuncture for other problems believe in using it for pain.

Perhaps this is because research has shown that the painkilling effect of acupuncture seems to be connected to endorphins (natural, narcotic-like substances produced by our brains). Conventional Western doctors have trouble with the concept of energy traversing invisible channels, but endorphins are something they understand. It’s known that trauma can increase these natural opiates, and one argument used to dispute the effectiveness of acupuncture holds that it works merely by the counterirritant effect (that is, the pain of the needles takes your mind off whatever problem you’re being treated for).

There are over 350 acupoints on the meridians of the body. Selected points are stimulated by inserting fine acupuncture needles in order to improve the flow of chi or qi in the meridians and to restore balance and healthy functioning to the internal organs of the body.

Treatment points are selected on the basis of pulse and tongue diagnosis, examination, and questioning and categorized according to their effects on specific body systems and organs. The insertion of the needles is quick and virtually painless and often a comfortable and relaxed feeling follows.

Nobody knows exactly how acupuncture works but a growing body of research has shown acupuncture to be effective for a wide range of ailments including pain and joint problems, specific organ imbalances, mental and emotional problems, and childhood illnesses.

Increasing numbers of Western medically trained doctors and nurses are now studying and practicing acupuncture, while more people every year embark on full-time training in acupuncture as a career.

Acupuncture is economical and effective for both treating and preventing disease and has an important role to play in Western healthcare.

Acupressure

Acupressure involves the application of fingertip or nail pressure to acupuncture points on the body in order to remove blockages or pain and enhance the flow of chi. In Chinese medicine acupressure may be used in its own right or incorporated into an acupuncture treatment.

Typically the middle or index fingers or the thumbs are used, but sometimes, as in shiatsu, the knuckles, elbows, or knees may be used to apply firmer pressure to large areas of the body.

Acupressure is particularly suitable for those who are anxious about acupuncture needles. It can also be easily learned and safely applied as a self-help technique. However, since its application is less direct and specific than an acupuncture needle, the results are likewise often slower and less specific.

Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to prevent or treat illness. It's one component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, an integrated system that's been used in china for more than 2000 years.

Which points are selected is important, but so is the angle and depth of the needle insertion; in fact, differences in these factors may cause opposite effects at the same point. Acupressure (pressing on acupuncture points with the fingers) can be substituted for needles, as can electrical stimulation of the points, or placing smoldering cones of the herb moxa (Artemisia vulgaris, or mugwort) on them. Needles sometimes twirled to maximize their effect.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is finally considering taking acupuncture needles off of investigational status, where they've languished for years. This would open the way for acupuncture to be covered by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance.

That's good news, because acupuncture is effective for a variety of conditions, and it can be used in situations where Western medicine has limitations (stroke rehabilitation, for example, or treatment of addictions) or where Western medicine would be dangerous (to anesthetize someone who can't tolerate normal anesthetic drugs, for example). There's a great deal of potential for the incorporation of acupuncture into our medical care system.

The scientific literature on acupuncture (in English) is quite sparse, and many ailments that are commonly, successfully treated with acupuncture have not been well studied. More controlled trials should be done on pain and addiction, inflammatory bowl disease, depression, infertility and neurological diseases.

Acupuncture is thought of as an ancient Chinese practice and rightly so. Laser acupuncture, however, shows the old and new can mesh.

Laser Acupuncture

Modern technology is impacting virtually every area of our life and so it is no surprise to learn that it has reached the ancient practice of acupuncture. Laser acupuncture is a relatively new addition to this timeless healing art. A concentrated laser beam can penetrate into the skin for a certain distance without burning or harming the skin. This allows a laser to stimulate certain acupuncture body points. This stimulation is not exactly the same as the stimulation of a needle, but it does trigger reactions in the points.

The practice is still considered to be in an Investigational type of treatment, and in that status no claims of cures are permitted in the United States. The procedure is not being viewed as a replacement for the use of needles in acupuncture treatments. The idea is that the lasers will be used as just one of the tools in the overall regime of treatment offered by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The other tools such as herbal concoctions, acupressure, moxibustion, and advice on lifestyle choices will continue to be applied in a complete treatment package.

Currently, laser acupuncture is limited by the strength of the laser beam itself. The normal range used is between 5 and 500 mW of power. When the level goes over 500, there is a possibility of burning the skin. This power level limits the depth of the beam and therefore its ability to stimulate the acupuncture point.

The process is so new and is being used in a practice that has taken centuries of study and trial and error to perfect. It is not unexpected that much experimentation and clinical studies are being done to attempt to understand the benefits and limitations of laser acupuncture. The beams can also be used only in certain areas. For example, points on the foot can be stimulated except for the points on the heel. The laser can not attain enough depth here to stimulate the point.

Laser acupuncture is a technical change in the practice of acupuncture that will take some time to completely understand. Its use does say something about attitude of professional acupuncturists. While many view acupuncture as a foreign and very culturally different type of activity, the use of lasers shows that it is actually very much like any other body of knowledge. It is constantly seeking to improve. The great body of knowledge that is contained in the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine has always been growing and evolving.

Acupuncture is about the manipulation of energy points. Acupuncture alarm points are the most powerful areas that can be addressed.

Acupuncture Alarm Points

Each one of the 12 major Meridians of the body has one special acupuncture point. This point is sometimes called the Mu point and it is associated with the organ for which the Meridian is named. These points are also called acupuncture alarm points. All but two of them are located on the chest and abdomen. The remaining two are located at the tip of the eleventh and the twelfth ribs. The one on the eleventh rib is associated with the Spleen Meridian. The one on the twelfth rib is associated with the Kidney Meridian.

When an organ name is used to describe a Meridian, it is capitalized. This is to distinguish it from the actual organ. Although organs are associated with the Meridians, this association is not total and that explains the capitalization. The acupuncture alarm points, however, are located directly above the organ that is used to name the Meridian. These points are very powerful and have a dramatic effect when they are involved in treatment.

In order to use these acupuncture alarm points to the maximum, a practitioner must understand the relationships between Meridians and various body systems. For example, the Lung Meridian controls all things having to do with the skin. The Kidney Meridian controls muscles and ligaments. Even the different emotions such as grief, worry, and anger are also each associated with different Meridians. Direct stimulation of the alarm point can have a dramatic effect on the system controlled by the Meridian. This stimulation can be manual, electrical, or through normal acupuncture needling.

This system of acupuncture alarm points exists also in some of the holistic acupuncture systems such as Koryo Sooji Chim, or Korean Hand Acupuncture. These systems basically repeat the pattern of the body acupuncture on smaller parts of the body such as the scalp or the ear. In the case of Korean Hand Acupuncture, all the major Meridians and therefore all the corresponding acupuncture alarm points would be located on the hand as well as there normal places on the body.

Acupuncture alarm points sometimes show redness or tenderness. This is thought to be a signal of a potential problem with the associated organ systems. This is part of the reason why they are called alarm points. An examination to diagnose a patient in Traditional Chinese Medicine would involve a review of the alarm points as a standard part of the procedure.

Acupuncture - Is it safe for us? Acupuncture happens to be a very popular and profitable form of medicine, since millions of people will use acupuncture to treat all of their health issues. You can use acupuncture to get cured from back pain to headaches to sleeping disorders. There is a lot of uncertainly about acupuncture, however, you will find that this article has a lot of advantages and disadvantages for you to consider.

Most people who are not familiar with acupuncture are often worried about needles being inserted into the body. This is a typical concern that should be serious, however, you should know that if it is done properly, you will be able to have acupuncture performed properly and safely. There are licensed acupuncturists, who must pass state-established training standards to become certified, and many doctors and specialists, such as neurologists or those working in physical medicine, are becoming certified in order to perform acupuncture as a treatment option for patients.

You should know that the United States FDA or Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of needles only by licensed practitioners. This approval should ease some concerns about acupuncture as a safe practice. In fact, there have been very few complaints logged at the FDA about acupuncture. There have been concerns and complaints of non-sterile needles that can end up spreading infection and disease. Thus, if you are seeking acupuncture treatment, ensure that the acupuncture needles have been sterilized. Professional acupuncturists will certainly work with sterile needles to ensure client safety.

Certainly, with acupuncture, there is the risk of a needle being inserted too deeply, which could cause organs to be punctured. This risk if a very small risk and you should begin to think about all of the millions of people who have seen success in acupuncture treatments, and there are very few cases of needles puncturing organs. Furthermore, this sort of situation can most likely be avoided by undergoing treatment with a licensed acupuncture practitioner. In addition, if you feel serious pain when getting the needles injected, you may want to talk to the practitioner because they may be putting them in too deep. In fact, some people do not even feel the needles being inserted into your pressure points. If you do feel pain after or during an acupuncture treatment, you should see a medical doctor right away.

There are two risks that you will want to consider dangerous or unsafe. You will want to think about both of these risks, but also know that they can be avoided if you use a qualified acupuncture practitioner that has been certified and has some experience. With the millions of people who have tried it and had success, you will find that your health issues may become a lot better for everyone with the use of acupuncture. You can also rest assured that the procedure can be completely safe if you take all the right precautions.

You can use Acupuncture for your healthy life.

Sometimes it's it can be difficult for people of another culture to understand the workings of ancient Chinese traditional and alternative health treatments.

Acupuncture weight loss is such a treatment, that is often misunderstood as it's often hard to fathom how the process of sticking needles into the body can help or even cause weight loss.

Scepticism very often comes from the fact that we're not well informed or not aware of all the elements involved in these ancient treatments - like the acupuncture weight loss treatment.

Acupuncture weight loss comes from the old Chinese practice of acupuncture. While acupuncture weight loss has been around for almost as long as acupuncture itself, the treatment became popular around 2003.

Staggering reports of acupuncture weight loss statistics in China were conveyed through the media. In a world where weight loss is a major issue for so many people, the news was greeted with a great deal of interest and scepticism.

At that time it was reported by the Chinese that acupuncture weight loss was helping a large number of people lose on average between twenty and thirty pounds. There have been cases where people have lost huge amounts of weight - although this is an exception.

The success rate percentage was nothing less than fantastic. Acupuncture weight loss specialists in China claimed that four out of five people that had gone through the treatment were losing weight.

It wasn't long before acupuncture weight loss centers began picking up on this success and clinics specifically for this process began opening in major cities around the world.

The main goal of the acupuncture weight loss treatment is to stimulate the patient's digestive system. While acupuncture weight loss uses acupuncture as the main foundation of this process, it always combined with a herb process as well.

The herbs used in an acupuncture weight loss process, balance the digestive system, reducing the appetite and improving the patient's metabolism. All of these processes are vitally important in a successful acupuncture weight loss plan.

It is also important to note that most reputable clinics using herbs as a part of their acupuncture weight loss process are using pharmaceutical herbs.

Acupuncture weight loss clinics also use methods such as light exercise, Shaitsu massage, breathing lessons and information on body balance and flexibility as essential elements of a fully rounded acupuncture weight loss process.

Acupuncture weight loss is not an instant weight loss solution, it is however, more of a gradual approach that is focused on turning the body and mind into a healthy and balanced whole.

The acupuncture weight loss process is one of discomfort, on the contrary, while some of the acupuncture weight loss methods are active, others such as Aroma wraps and Shiatsu massage are considered more on the wellness and wellbeing side of the acupuncture weight loss methodology.

So now you hopefully have a different picture of what's involved in an acupuncture weight loss process. You may even be tempted to try an acupuncture weight loss process yourself.

Acupuncture is commonly used to help people withdraw from tobacco, alcohol, heroin or cocaine addiction; it's currently being studied by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, and it's used widely in New York City for outpatient drug detoxification.

The points for treating drug addiction are found on the ear, and they can be taught relatively easily to laypeople, which then only use acupuncture for this specific purpose. Detoxification from chronic use of prescribed opiates usually takes 3-6 months; even "brief" detoxification programs may take more than a month. In an uncontrolled trial of electrical stimulation at ear acupuncture points, twelve out of fourteen chronic pain patients were able to completely withdraw from narcotics within 2-7 days, and they experienced few or no side effects.

The evidence that acupuncture helps with withdrawal symptoms is tantalizing but insufficient, and it probably doesn't help prevent relapses at all. But given the dearth of successful medical treatments for addiction, there clearly needs to be more research into the role of acupuncture detoxification as part of a comprehensive treatment program.

An excellent review of studies of acupuncture and substance abuse was written by Brewington, Smith and Lipton, the first two of whom work at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, where the use of acupuncture in treating withdrawal symptoms of drug addiction was pioneered. If you're interested in a comprehensive analysis of both published and unpublished trials, see this review.

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Acupuncture is widely used as an adjunctive treatment for addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Acupuncture is commonly considered by Western medical practitioners to have little more credibility than many other 'complementary therapies' and is often dismissed by them along with 'alternative' treatments with little or no history or proven efficacy. Acupuncture is an extremely old Chinese mode of treatment now practised all across the globe. It focuses on restricting the flow of energy in the body. Acupuncture controlled experimental conditions.

People who received acupuncture detoxification handling were two times more possible to remain in reclamation therapy than folk who did not obtain acupuncture handling. More than 70 % of people. treated with acupuncture successfully completed detoxification, compared with simply 501043f hosiery who did not obtain the handling. Acupuncture can too greatly cut the fall away pace among alcoholics. In cocaine addicts, acupuncture appears to get an especially powerful impact on the craving. For those detoxifying from alcohol, the success pace was 90. Recidivism of alcohol and drug addicts decreased from 20-25 % 5 % for patients. There are no substitutes for cocaine and hash addicts to assist them halt using drugs. Acupuncture is the simply unconventional and most folk receive it, since they look that still if it doesn't do any better, it yet can't damage. The handling of hash and cocaine addicts with acupuncture is mainly focused on re-establishing a passionate balance. Moxibustion involves stimulating acupuncture points with warmth. It introduces vitality into the system either by heating the needle or the rind with a moxa pin or by burning moxa immediately on the rind. Electrostimulation enhances the effect of the needles and can be used to either stimulate or sedate.

Different frequencies develop distinct physical responses in the system. A thick hash smoker is inclined to display such symptoms as uneasiness, depression and craving for rather some moment. Experience has shown that this class of addicts frequently prematurely fall out of the clinical as easily as the outpatient handling programmes. Acupuncture is efficient in reducing climate changes, irritability, insomnia and tiredness. All clients felt their acupuncturist had assessed their needs extremely accurately.

There are around 90 treatises written on acupuncture between the Han and Song dynasties. A figure template with all the meridians and acupuncture points marked out, was designed on instruction of the Song emperor Renzong. This figure template is still in use today. As a treatment for infertility, acupuncture is gaining popularity. It is commonly used in conjunction with other infertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF). A recent scientific study conducted by the University of Southhampton in Britain, concluded that acupuncture for infertility increases the chance of successful birth for women undergoing IVF fertility treatment. The normal success rate is 1 in 5 while those who combine IVF treatment with acupuncture for infertility, are successful 1 in 3 times.

Acupuncture for infertility has been shown to be successful in increasing the chance of pregnancy for IVF (in-vitro fertilization) treatment. Acupuncture treatment is normally complemented by a proper diet, healthy lifestyle habits and emotional well-being. Depending on the diagonsis, acupuncture can performed on either the male or female, or both. Acupuncture improves the chance of conception by helping the woman to relax, regulates the reproductive hormones and increases the blood flow to the uterus. It also thickens the lining of the uterus. For men, acupuncture can increase the quality of the sperm. All these serve to increase the chance of conceiving successfully.

Do note that acupuncture for infertility works only for those who have a functional reason for infertility. If you have fertility problem caused by a physical defect such as damaged reproductive organs, it may not be effective. In any case, if the treatment is indeed something that can help you, the effects should be apparent after a few visits to the acupuncturist. To enhance the effectiveness of acupuncture, you may also want to combine with herbal remedies as well as other natural approaches to infertility treatment such as proper diet and a healthy lifestyle.

This second edition includes an updated and expanded section on trigger points with 30 additional full-color images.

The authors come from diverse specialties, giving you the most complete and accurate information available. Acupuncture points are described using the "visual-didactic processing system", which is rapidly gaining praise and recognition for its easy-to-use format. Acupuncture and the Chakra Energy System: Treating the Cause of Disease Acupuncture and the chakra energy system have both become increasingly mainstream in the West, but rarely have the two approaches been joined into one practice. Acupuncture and the Chakra Energy System: Treating the Cause of Disease does just that. By comparing the traditional approaches of Chinese medicine and modern Western acupuncture with the chakra energy system of Ayurvedic philosophy, author John Cross offers clinically proven strategies for treating the causes of conditions, not just the symptoms.

The book describes the seven major and twenty-one minor chakras in detail and explains how each is related to the body's aura, meridians, Key points, endocrine glands, autonomic nervous system, and varying symptomatology. Focusing on how to use the chakras in the treatment of chronic physical and emotional conditions—osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, low back pain with sciatica, insomnia, hypertension, depression, menopausal symptoms, and frozen shoulder, among others—Cross’s clear, in-depth explanations make his techniques easy for anyone to follow. Including appendices on how to use the chakras with copper and zinc needles and biomagnets, as well as which types of patients respond to such treatments, Acupuncture and the Chakra Energy System is a well-rounded guide for acupuncturists and other practitioners as well as interested students.

The Channels of Acupuncture: Clinical Use of the Secondary Channels and Eight Extraordinary Vessels One of the most highly-regarded and respected authors and lecturers in the West, Giovanni Maciocia, illuminates and examines the art of traditional Chinese acupuncture with this in-depth look at the secondary channels and other key structures encompassing the human body in Chinese anatomy. This book describes in detail the pathways, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of the Luo, Muscle, and Divergent secondary channels, as well as other key structures such as the Cou Li and Huang membranes, and gives a thorough, clear overview of subjects poorly understood and incompletely covered in other English language texts. Over one third of the book is dedicated to the Eight Extraordinary Channels, providing the reader with the most in-depth information available in the English language. Drawing on his broad clinical experience, the author covers the energetic physiology, pathology and points by body area, providing ease of access for both the student and practitioner of acupuncture. The Channels of Acupuncture presents comprehensive and clear information on an essential part of traditional Chinese medicine.

Covers key channels not thoroughly discussed in other texts, giving all students and practitioners detailed and clear material to guide them in their practice of acupuncture.Offers new information and insight on other key body structures in Chinese medicine including extraordinary vessels as well as the Cou Li and Huang membranes.Clear illustrations depict the exact channel pathways, diminishing any confusion about their location.Case histories and research from Giovanni Maciocia present a wide range of experiences and examples of clinical practice and study.

Biomedical Acupuncture for Pain Management: An Integrative Approach The authors of this book have developed a treatment protocol which they term the Integrative Neuromuscular Acupoint System, a synthesis of biomedicine and traditional acupuncture that uses biomedical terminology and concepts to interpret the basic mechanisms and clinical procedures of acupuncture, while retaining the emphasis on whole-person therapy and "promoting health while treating the disease," cornerstones of TCM. The authors maintain that the integration of acupuncture into mainstream medicine cannot happen without biomedicalization. Many readers, in particular Western healthcare professionals, will find this system an effective protocol for treating neuromuscular pain. Contents include acupoint neuroanatomy, pathophysiology, neural bases, and peripheral mechanisms; an integrative neuromuscular acupoint system for evaluation and treatment; protocols for back pain, upper limb pain, lower limb pain, and systemic pain; and therapy for non-pain symptoms, sports medicine, and therapy using electroacupuncture analgesia and injection therapy. 31 case studies are included.

A Manual of Acupuncture Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.
